  • Tuvalu is an independent small island state in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean. Like many small island states Tuvalu is confronted with effects of climate change. Aware of its vulnerability and understanding the challenges associated with it, Tuvalu has been, over the past decade, implementing climate change adaptation methods while at the same time raising awareness nationally.
In October 2018, the department of Climate Change and organised the first round of simulation exercise training, on the main island of Funafuti. The week-long training workshop was to enable national stakeholders to design and conduct a simulation exercise to effectively test the early warning system installed by the NAPA 2 project and to identify arrangements for emergency communication to ensure the timely dissemination of warning to appropriate agencies and the public.
The training was also a step towards designing national drill and evacuation processes.
The greatest challenge is creating better awareness within the communities and general population in the event there is a major natural disaster such as a tsunami.
