Well, not really around this this is the period where he was infamous for ripping electrical sockets right out of the walls in anger due to being coked up all the time.
Judas Priest existed before Judas Priest. It was a band that was already in existence and playing concerts that KK Downing joined, and then promptly fired all the members and kept the name, and then started hiring all the other members, firstly Ian Hill, then Rob then Glen.
This was the release of the Turbo album. When it initially was released I was actually heartbroken. I didn't buy the album and hated it for the better part of 20 years. Then I allowed the album to grow on me over the last decade or so... I The only songs I liked when the album was released was Locked In and Reckless. I've been a fan since 1979
@mickmos rocka rolla, sad wings of destiny, sin after sin, killing machine, british steel, screaming for vengeance, defenders of the faith, and painkiller are just all amazing.
You know what else came out early 1986? ME! I like to think I was conceived from the creation of that album. Turbo Lover is my favourite Priest track. :)
@codebabe this modern sound of Painkiller is the natural succession of progression - new style of percussion, new sound of guitars, better quality. But this is only an areola. Painkiller is not so exciting and delighting like DOTF. DOTF has the spirit, it contains a climate of the year 1984, it simply screams the 80's. When I hear Defenders, It's like the feeling of whole reality of the world in 1984. Maybe you don't feel that essence; you look at different things which fascinate you in Painkiller
I've heard that Iommi is Christian as well. I'm guessing priest got their name influence from sabbath. Check this out though man, all these early heavy rock bands' names, two words, three syllables; Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Judas Priest....coincidence???lol I find it fascinating personally!
Poor Rob was really into alcohol and coke at this point, looks exhausted and has huge bags under his eyes. I'm glad he cleaned up, may have died otherwise.
What's interesting is that Halford has stated before that they are not an anti Christian band, rather the name was used because it was catchy and would get people's attention. not unlike the name black sabbath.
@mickmos - from Painkiller and Ram it Down I like only the songs Leather Rebel and Ram it Down, cuz they are really the best and kick ass. ..and yea, the Hell patrol... From "Point of Entry" I can only listen to Heading... and Don't go. And from 70's? I feel loved in a song Run of the mill. Also Starbreaker, Sinner, Victim of Changes, Epitaph, Dreamer Deceiver, Exciter, Heroes end, Hell bent... were very good songs to listen. But that is only 1 or 2 brilliants on a whole album
@szymusiek1980 defenders is cool. it is very mid 80s sounding. which isn't necessarily a good thing. as i dont care for the production of a lot of 80s albums. i enjoy the sound of true 80s metal(meaning non hair metal bands). i dont care for the really airey sounding snare drums or the overuse of synths all that much. some great songs were written in that time but i enjoy late 80s to mid 90s production a lot more.
I know what you mean about production, particularly the drums. Example the Defenders album. Love the album, hate the fluffy sounding drums. The remaster does nothing to address this in fact it's even worse. I'd love for defenders and vengeance to have the kind of drum sounds that point of entry had.
The drums on 'Defenders of the Faith' album are the best possible drums. Thankfully they brought such a massive, heavy snares to the songs. I'm glad the drums since 'Defenders' are no longer a shoes boxes pretending to be a percussion like it happened on 'Point of Entry' and 'British Steel' albums - good albums but pulled down with crappy drums. 'Defenders' album is the first time when there appears a solid decent sound of drumming. This album would be ruined if there were drums from earlier albums.
@szymusiek1980 i enjoy listening to painkiller straight through as much as defenders. better drumming, its just full on metal. i mean idk if i'd say its better but i enjoy it alot. painkiller has lots of great tunes. the title track, leather rebel, night crawler, leather rebel, hell patrol, all guns blazing, a shot at glory, a touch of evil, i could list the whole album.
That's almost like KoRns name, it doesn't really matter what the name is, it's the music. And if u listen to them the name does actually go with the music, as does slipknot
lol that's not an uncommon saying. i'm pretty sure that has to do with the band's choice in calling themselves that is because it was an expression, but i'm not sure.
@trex6321 i'm guessing if you are only mentioning british steel that you've only heard material primarily from that album. incidently, that album has halford's least technically impressive vocal work. listen to the song Victim of Changes...you will know what I he is considered to be so technically amazing. Is he the very best? No. Is he one of the best? DEFINITELY.
Sadly, the album they were working on was "Turbo", which was by far the worst album they ever made. Sadly, it sold well and Ram It Down was the follow up as they vowed that if Turbo had failed "Painkiller" which was their best since Screaming For Vengeance would have been their next album. I saw them the night before I graduated from high school in 1986 and they just sucked. I never thought I would say that about them.
Wasn't this less than a year before Rob hit the wall with drugs and booze? Glad he cleaned up cause I heard and read that he got pretty heavy(no pun)Anybody know if im correct?
@codebabe so would you dare to compare Painkiller to Defenders? DOTW has 90% of great songs, SFV has 70% of great songs, and Painkiller has only 20% of great songs!
Why is he talking so much crap about the question of the name "Judas Priest"? Everyone knows it was Atkins who took the name from the Bob Dylan song. And when Atkins left he gave kk and glenn the rights of the name, and then rob joined. Else than that, the turbo tour which he is talking about are going to commence was awesome. But the album was.. err...
good interview i like judas priests music and the british steel album is good that chick is hot but you see i'm not a really big rob halford fan not because he's gay but I just don't see why some people make such a big deal out of him wouldn't say he's the best singer out there
One of the classiest, kindest guys in rock....ever.
Well, not really around this this is the period where he was infamous for ripping electrical sockets right out of the walls in anger due to being coked up all the time.
had my photo taking with rob once and the flash didn't go off I didn't even notice but he did thanks rob made them take it over

Rob is a top shelf guy & always has been!
All Hail the PRIEST
Man, she TOTALLY wants a piece of Rob. You're outta luck though sugar.
Well... Who doesn't I mean, such a classy funny and interesting person
I love Halford man. Such an amazing vocalist!!!! Most important metal band besides Sabbath.
Totally agree with that. Priest were great. And Halford is my all time favorite singer.
Rob Halford is the coolest profile in Heavy Metal ;)
Judas Priest existed before Judas Priest. It was a band that was already in existence and playing concerts that KK Downing joined, and then promptly fired all the members and kept the name, and then started hiring all the other members, firstly Ian Hill, then Rob then Glen.
And she is the leather-faced interviewer!
Judas Priest is the coolest name for a band! Infact the name Judas Priest made be attracted to this band!
Bobby H. looks fuckin' hot w/ bleached blond hair! He almost looks like a real-live Ken doll.
Rob was always a hottie. I loved the short hair. Yummy.
YeS
YES
yESS
METAL GOD
Was at Rockers in Phoenix this same year when he gave me a very long and unsettling stare. I _was_ going to ask for an autograph.

Thanks for commenting.
Apart from the last one, she kept asking him questions that he had already answered!
@mickmos rocka rolla, sad wings of destiny, sin after sin, killing machine, british steel, screaming for vengeance, defenders of the faith, and painkiller are just all amazing.
Cody Wilson stained class my friend

You know what else came out early 1986?
ME!

Better days...

Yeah. I just find it fascinating as I said, all four of those hard rock giants had two-word band names that are three syllables long.
wow ten albums by 1985
I know man, I know a lot about him :)
@rmarcontell Actually it was Boris Karloff who was in the film "Black Sabbath". The film was directed by Mario Bava.
Thin Lizzy too!
Poor Rob was really into alcohol and coke at this point, looks exhausted and has huge bags under his eyes. I'm glad he cleaned up, may have died otherwise.
@realmetal62 his spikes and leather? why does it matter how you look? i give more credit to the musicians but his voice is beyond epic
What's interesting is that Halford has stated before that they are not an anti Christian band, rather the name was used because it was catchy and would get people's attention. not unlike the name black sabbath.

@szymusiek1980 umm.. what?? painkiller is a classic, and have you even listened to the first 5 albums??
What's that shirt say? Bikers wanted?
rob halford is cool don't matter if is gay judas rocks and the chick interviewing him is cute
I had no idea Rob had so many gay fanboys. Good for him.
@rmarcontell i knew that they were inspired by horror films and felt that music needed its horror genre. so that makes sense.

@szymusiek1980 Painkiller is flat out amazing. dont know what you're talking about.
And that Album would be...Turbo Lol
What does he mean by "valley"
The Phoenix metro area.
That's almost like KoRns name, it doesn't really matter what the name is, it's the music. And if u listen to them the name does actually go with the music, as does slipknot
Yeah. He had hair, clean shaven, no gay tattoos, and not fucked up
He looks even cooler now with bald head and goat tee and spiked leather trench coat he looks like hellrazor
lol that's not an uncommon saying. i'm pretty sure that has to do with the band's choice in calling themselves that is because it was an expression, but i'm not sure.

@qu7aker Ozzy Osbourne dyes his hair all the time and he still has all of his.
where you find this intrerview??
Sadly, the album they were working on was "Turbo", which was by far the worst album they ever made. It was that year. It was mostly Rob. He looks like shit in this interview.
I thought she was rob
@codebabe so would you dare to compare Painkiller to Defenders? DOTW has 90% of great songs, SFV has 70% of great songs, and Painkiller has only 20% of great songs!
I'm sorry, was that directed at my comment?
looked better with hair
@hkhuhn mature
who cares..

You can see where is is already balding
@kencoa - Defenders..., Screaming..., Turbo are their best albums ever!
Ram it down, Painkiller, Point of Entry just sucks!
Metal God meets Tan Mom 🤣
