Eaque Johnson Steven is one of the very few that actually can go toe to toe with Russell. He also knows how to actually engage him and show his interest in what matters to him.
Eaque you don't need to put someone down to raise someone up. It's very UNCOOL. Colbert is always great with writers, thinkers but he fails miserably with stars, celebs etc. His interviews with them are bland and boring. But I love him the most when he interviews thinkers. Everybody has his or her own niche, I believe.
Jo Montanee I didn't put anyone down to raise someone up, as you suggest. You extrapolated that from a simple 2-line comment, but that is your thinking, not mine. imo, THAT's what's uncool here. I never tried to rate Colbert higher than Fallon or anyone in general, I'm merely talking about this specific interview with Russell Brand, and joking that Fallon wouldn't do anywhere as good as this (which I assumed judging from past interviews with the two). In reality, I think Colbert is only good when he can be provocative/aggressive or show depth, he's never starstruck (to the point that I don't think he cares about Hollywood stars at all), so yeah his interviews with stars are flat and sometimes awkward, I never watch them anymore. But see, you're the one who's assuming that I'm trying to praise my favorite by belittling the others - you're the one making assumptions.
This was beautiful and brilliant. It's awesome to see Russells energy tempered a bit by someone who actually listens and challenges him, and it's equally awesome to see Stephen have a conversation where he's actually able to show his smarts and wisdom.
Elke Ve My favorite interviews done by Colbert are usually with authors, intellectuals, political journalists, etc... Russel Brand is of course so multi faceted as a person that he is definitely not the average boring hollywood celebrity interview!
Yeah, I agree. They got on quite well. Colbert followed his logic and Brand seemed to like being taken seriously. Letterman used to make fun of brand (characterizing him as a wierdo) and Conan just didn't understand him at all (his sidekick does to some extent but the one who has to bring the laughs is Conan and he's usually disarmed by Brand.) So yea, Colbert did well.

well he became an actor when he was like 13 so I don't think that's true. His autobiographies all center around his acting career and he trained in acting for a decade so it was clearly always the focus of his early life. He began writing comedy skits for himself and friends, but that's not authoring. His first book, I believe, is My . Bookie Wook, a reflection on his break into hollywood
I would love to shag him and have him quote Shakespeare at the same time. he was great in the tempest and I love all his books including the children's book
Finally, Colbert feeling comfortable in an interview. I love when celebs show their intelligence. These types of interviews really give Colbert the opportunity to shine.
Stephen is intelligent enough to follow, and respond to Russell. Craig Ferguson has the same demons of addiction and comedy running through him. Plus the intelligence. Everyone else is a difficult watch.
Just now realized what a phenomenal interview Stephen is. Brand's interviews are always interesting but most often because the interviewer is so completely lost and gets steamrolled, which doesn't serve anyone. Stephen met Brand where he's at (and fuck knows where that exactly is) and pulled out an interesting and awesome and even informative interview. Btw, I love Brand, he's madly beautiful.
Russell brand changed my life. He made me realize we are all in pain and are trying to escape pain through outlets: movies/going out, dining, social media, RUclips, sleep, food, drugs, gambling, alcohol, shopping. We can only get through pain by looking inside ourselves and being at peace without escaping to any distractions.
No we didn't. I don't cling, I partake on occasion. Life itself and all that comes with it, is plenty. To desire a creator, a purpose, or an afterlife seems to me nowt but selfish greed.
Ahhh, Hollywood dispatched him to wilderness because he started saying bad things about crony capitalism and that just wouldn't do, watch the clip in which he humiliates Mika and see.
Stephen Colbert!!! Please do some kind of internet special where you can have a much longer interview with Russell, you're one of the few people out there that can keep up with him in a conversation. This 8 mins was awesome!

I really like that Stephen Colbert delved into the subject of the book more in-depth than just plugging it and saying what it's about then asking questions that are off-topic. He used the interview to ask Russell about the subject matter of the book, and how he came to his views on addiction. Most hosts will do a full interview and barely mention why the person is even on the show.
You are not special. You're not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else. We're all part of the same compost heap. We're the all singing, all dancing crap of the world.
that moment when you're distracted by youtube videos from GCSE revision then Russel Brand starts: "I am Ozymandias King of Kings" (this is one of my set poems)
I love the moment at 3:30 when Russell sees how truly smart Stephen is. Other hosts like Fallon and Kimmel wouldn't have anything more to contribute to a Russel Brand monologue but Stephen ping pongs some wisdom right back to him
He is so fun to watch. I always love when people realize how smart he is, and that he has insulted them in a hilarious and genius way! Something sexy about him, his intelligence I think. 👏🏼😻
2:52 I will say I can pretty strongly agree with him on this. 3:29 Also very good. 4:15 I know he's being funny, but he's also partly serious. Monks aren't dressing as monks to announce themselves. It's not a boastful thing.
Exactly! and the frivality and vanity associated with regular clothes could be what stimulates such piss warm intellectual engagement during 'everyday conversation'
The point that addictions come from our craving for connection is well argued for in Szalavitz, M. (2016). Unbroken Brain: A Revolutionary New Way of Understanding Addiction. New York, NY: St. Martin’s Press. There's quite a bit of evidence that addictions come from loneliness.
Read the literature or walk into any AA/NA meeting and you'll find out that using doesn't cause addiction, addiction causes using - using is but a symptom of addiction. The root of it lies in myriad of other possibilities. The only difference between a heroin addiction and an addiction to money is that the former leads you directly to rock bottom, while the latter will give you "success," although keep you *just as* spiritually sick as a heroin addiction. The only reason addicts get single out and shit on is because their particular addiction is so much more destructive, however it is really no different than anyone else's. There are more broken people walking around that have no idea what is wrong with them then there are heroin addicts. Realizing I was an addict was one of the best things that ever happened to me because it taught me to understand myself better than most people ever will. Most people dont have the luxury of hitting rock bottom, getting that wake up call, and changing their lives.
there's lust and love. Lust are temptations like sex, drugs and money and love is something that uplifts you. Everybody has both like the devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other lol. Addiction is lusty that can come from a lack of love I'm not sure. These are things that come to mind when you meditate. This is why I think meditation is important or praying if you're religious.
FYI: Thomas Merton...not Burton Highly recommend his works. Sad to say, but it leaves me questioning Brand's exploration of recovery as those works are used extensively in the community.
This is why Stephen is my fav! Saw many videos of Russell talking about his book right now and no one threw him off like Stephen did, no one even came close! This was good!
Edwin Colon by throwing him off I meant that russel couldn’t come up With any intellectual responses to his questions after a while and so started answering them in a silly way which doesn’t happen often at his other interviews, he pretty much owns those.
Stephen's knowledge of the universe really impressed me. I know about what he said, but thats because Im a loser who spends way too much time watching youtube astronomy videos....I dunno how a successful person knows about them...
I'm a huge fan of Brother Theodore (anyone else out there who remembers him?), and these conversations between Russell Brand and Stephen remind me of Theodore's visits to David Letterman in the 80s. Brilliant stuff.
Stephen I love how you tried to do your research so you wouldn't look like a douche..you tried, but I think Russel is a little beyond our realm, he's on another level!!! Love you both!!!
TicToc RobotSnot it’s not easy to do either. Colbert is a very intelligent man, just wish he wouldn’t dedicate his show to so much anti-trump propaganda
He's right about 'the drive is the same'. I'm an addict. And have been - gambling, sex (still) - people who say 'that's not a real addiction' are idiots and just haven't experienced it; anything that consumes and denigrates your life and is a behaviour you want to stop but can't IS an addiction, all kinds of drugs, currently alcoholic and it's ruined/ruining my life also... they're all the same. No addiction is unique.
Because a lot of people are full of shit and they're afraid to face it, so they end up projecting it onto easy targets, like celebrities who can't hear them.
I love that when Russle says he hates small talk, Steven follows with “why are we here?” This is why I love Steven. He truly knows how to empathize with his guests and get on their wave length, and forget about sticking to a superficial agenda
Mr Russell Brand is literally putting his own deep down experience of addiction into layman’s terms , and I love that . Recovery from addiction is growing in character ! Pardon the pun Russell .
Russell is very well versed in the art of communication. So intelligent, well spoken, eloquent, present and a breath of fresh air. He’s one of my favorite people. Our president, not so much and he could stand to learn quite a bit from Mr. Brand and Mr. Colbert for that matter.
*~70% is dark ENERGY not dark matter. Dark matter is a substance with mass that interacts with gravity, basically "stuff" that we can't see. Dark energy is a totally different story.

You are not special. You're not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else. We're all part of the same compost heap. We're the all singing, all dancing crap of the world.
Why are people hating so hard on snowflakes? Are you so proud of being samey-same sheeps just following the herd?
that moment when you're distracted by youtube videos from GCSE revision then Russel Brand starts: "I am Ozymandias King of Kings" (this is one of my set poems)
I need this man’s reading list.
relatv216 same 😂
He's so infectious.
His spirit, personality... everything.
Russel's breakdowns are more philosophical than many philosophers, damn.
Russell would've been a great Wonka!
One of my favorite interviews thus far, and I love almost all of em’!
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I like Russell in this interview. Changed my opinion of him.
Love Russell Brand. He's changed me life!
I love the moment at 3:30 when Russell sees how truly smart Stephen is. Other hosts like Fallon and Kimmel wouldn't have anything more to contribute to a Russel Brand monologue but Stephen ping pongs some wisdom right back to him
i wanna see Russell brand and Jim Carry have a conversation
I am always caught between enjoying Russel Brand and finding him insufferable.
So do we all, and I'm a big fan. Listen to his podcast, his friends take him down a peg when he goes off on one.
Join. The. Group. ;)
I tend to vacillate more towards the 'insufferable' camp.
thats how i feel about Max Landis sometimes.
Joshua Hamilton Thanks for this tip!
Just... wow. Imagine the labyrinth of his mind and living there. 🤔😲
The first level is set aside entirely for sociopathy. :/
Lemonie Lala you’ve read my mind!
He's brilliant and it's refreshing to witness a conversation between 2 people that are intellectually matched. Wished the conversation was longer.
He is so fun to watch. I always love when people realize how smart he is, and that he has insulted them in a hilarious and genius way! Something sexy about him, his intelligence I think. 👏🏼😻
Russell and Stephen! HAD to watch this! Two of my favourites! And Russell was his usual interesting, authentic, intelligent self! I love you Russell!
Best russel brand interview I've seen curious to find more
Stephen done so well with Russel. Really impressed!!
love love LOVE Russell Brand ♥
Russy looks like he is seeing EVERYTHING for the first time.... with clear eyes!!!
I LOVE HIM!!!! and Colbert!!!!!
Russel is a very smart man... 😚💐
One of the most engaging and important conversations I've heard in a long time
I love this guy!
haha i love this dude, always refreshing having him as a guest. He defnitely needs to come back again Stephen!!!
Amen Russell! Amen brother....... thanks for spreading the message of Oneness.
He is poetry in motion
2:52 I will say I can pretty strongly agree with him on this.
3:29 Also very good.
4:15 I know he's being funny, but he's also partly serious. Monks aren't dressing as monks to announce themselves. It's not a boastful thing.
Exactly! and the frivality and vanity associated with regular clothes could be what stimulates such piss warm intellectual engagement during 'everyday conversation'
Some monks do....
Russell Brand: FUCKING GENIUS.
Any biologist can tell you we crave connection. Evolution demands it of social species.
AsFewFalseThingsAsPossible
Nope we don't need it as an evolutionary trait
That is where Darwinian evolution fails
The point that addictions come from our craving for connection is well argued for in Szalavitz, M. (2016). Unbroken Brain: A Revolutionary New Way of Understanding Addiction. New York, NY: St. Martin’s Press. There's quite a bit of evidence that addictions come from loneliness.
You're right. Also depression, trauma and a myriad of other psychological issues.
FYI: Thomas Merton...not Burton
Highly recommend his works.
Sad to say, but it leaves me questioning Brand's exploration of recovery as those works are used extensively in the community.
What a beautiful conversation :)
I love this guy, he's smarter than most people might even realize.
This was an amazing interview!
This is why Stephen is my fav! Saw many videos of Russell talking about his book right now and no one threw him off like Stephen did, no one even came close! This was good!
Maham Hamdani what do you threw him off?
Or did you mean keep up with Russell. Because that can be very difficult to do
Edwin Colon by throwing him off I meant that russel couldn’t come up
With any intellectual responses to his questions after a while and so started answering them in a silly way which doesn’t happen often at his other interviews, he pretty much owns those.
Great interview. Actual substance here unlike most of these Hollyweird personalities…
I love you Russell Brand keeping it real. 100%%
So good to see the positive energy of Russell Brand
I've never seen anyone so eloquently wrangle the flittering mind of Russell Brand the way Colbert does here.
TicToc RobotSnot it’s not easy to do either. Colbert is a very intelligent man, just wish he wouldn’t dedicate his show to so much anti-trump propaganda
the best part of this video is that Stephen looks nervous or pissed off at the beginning and by the end it's like he has a lot of respect for brand.
Meet The UK's new ambassador to The UN
I love Russell, but please don't encourage him
Colbert and Russell Brand together. Hard to imagine, but far better chemistry than I expected.
So this is his sober form? I would love to see what he was like when he's high.
I'm willing to bet that he would have been a lot less interesting.
Subhajit Deysarkar get him to the Greek
or his more serious side, his political webisode series
he worked at mtv and also had a show called re:brand while on heroin. you can find it on youtube.
This guy is amazing. I had seen him in a few very mediocre movies. I never realized he was this witty.
An unstable force meets an unmovable object.
Imma just stay down here worrying about tiddly winks. I'm not smart enough for this.
Russell brand is a far more elegant and charming narcissist than Trump. :)
At least his vocabulary is more varied.
FactVsReligion yeeeeah
Why would you even compare them??!!
Because a lot of people are full of shit and they're afraid to face it, so they end up projecting it onto easy targets, like celebrities who can't hear them.
@FactVsReligion I LOVED how you worded that! That's just beautiful!!!
I love how Stephen can tailor himself to his guests' personas.
Finally Russell Brand has a interviewer that's is maybe not on par but close in intellect level
Daniel Law Stephen Colbert from the Colbert report could have went toe to toe with him
I love that when Russle says he hates small talk, Steven follows with “why are we here?” This is why I love Steven. He truly knows how to empathize with his guests and get on their wave length, and forget about sticking to a superficial agenda
Mr Russell Brand is literally putting
his own deep down experience of addiction into layman’s terms ,
and I love that .
Recovery from addiction
is growing
in character !
Pardon the pun Russell .
That was a brilliant monologue lol. What an artist
I love me some Brand.
Two of my favorite people, truly a great interview.
