With this performance, I can see she is not only technically perfect, but also lyrically masterful. It is amazing to watch her hands. This performance moves me to tears.

The beauty of the music is matched by the beauty of the filming. It's superb. Valentina's hands remind me of a coutship dance of two large graceful spiders. I could watch it over and over. And I do.
This is my favorite Chopin piece and I have listened to many recordings of it. This is by far the best performance I've heard of this completely ingenious piece. You play it so delicately at the beginning. I am just blown away by this performance.

You play his pieces with such elegance and yes the respect towards this Nocturne's always goes overlooked it is by far the hardest for me to play. Thank you for keeping him alive to future generations seeing a lovely lady playing the piano:-)
This is one of my favourits in terms of tonal contrast, lyricism, thematic materials/changes, and OH GOD the modulation. Lovely tempo too; far from saccharine. I wonder why they don't perform this more often at weddings - it paints love so truthfully in ALL its tonal qualities - sweetness, love, elation, sorrow, and so forth - beautified, of course, in the art of fiction so wonderfully realized by Chopin.
Slow or fast, no matter how it is played it makes my heart ache and yearn for something...I do not even know what it is, it just leaves me breathless. All I know is that there is so much beauty in this nocturne that I cannot stop listening to it...and loving it.

As soon as the expressive hands caressed the keys before playing I KNEW this was going to be good. This piece needs to be felt while playing. It was a pleasure to hear, wonderfully performed.

I heard it on public radio and had to pull over to hear it and write down its name. Since then I have adopted it as my live music. There is something so haunting, so magical, yet so mysterious about it that it can't help but speak for me. I love this sweetly emotional and clear rendition. Thank You.

I went through love-hate "relationship" with this Nocturne. When I was asked by Lanaudiere Fesitval to select 7 Nocturnes for the concert ( I never played any before - to my utter shame ) I had to quickly flip through the sheet music and pick ones I thought I might stand :-) This one was number "last" on my list of things to do. I didn't start learning it until it was almost too late ( those who watched my webcast of practice can confirm :-)). I dreaded the moment when I will get sick and tired of this sweetest thing ever written with its gorgeous but repetitious melody.... Check-it out and see if you can keep up with Mr. Chopin LOL ..... i can't , I still play it waaaaaay under tempo .Let's see how many "critics" will leave comments saying it is too fast .....But , no matter what it makes a perfect sense- and suddenly my dread turned into astonishment at Chopin's genius. The whole piece is suddenly transformed from overly long sugary-syrupy chant to an exalted and impassioned speech- you make whatever you want of this speech , maybe it is a declaration of love ? after all - the piece ends with the most beautiful duet of two voices....
Hi Valentina, I've been listening to your music for nearly a decade and in that time have learned the piano to a reasonable standard myself (though not nearly as good as you!) I've recently written a homage to Chopin and would love to hear your thoughts (if you have the time to listen, but no worries if not!) P.S. you are incredible!
Valentina makes this so magical, it truly rises to a level of wonder. Such beauty and power together, you make this sound like it is the first time it was performed. Chopin's pen was dipped in moonlight and so were your fingers Valentina!
Love it!! Your hands are so relaxed and graceful! I was just playing this and decided to look it up to see what it really sounds like! Hard to sight-read Chopin with a 4 month old baby on my lap.. lol Thank you!
Undoubtedly the most thought-provoking Chopin piece ever. Beautifully done - most people who argue about tempo are people who don't know rubato anyways...forget'em!
this is so beautiful i simply broke down in tears. the piece is remarkable. and valentina, you are so eloquent with each note. this is outright the most technical i have ever seen from any of your videos. i am truly moved deeply. thank you.
I see no talent here. I see ruthless and almost unfathomable work ethic. You don't play a piece with that much emotion and beauty without earning it. She is absolutely amazing to watch. They say ten thousand hours is required to be a master and I would love to see how much practice she has put in. Incredible and inspiring
I have listened to this piece hundreds of times, and this was truly something of an epiphany. It's like a beautiful oration in a foreign language, remarkable in it's own right, but so much more so when you understand it. The piece feels so much more "right" this way.
In my opinion and for my heart this is the more beautiful music in the world. I can see the dance of your hands. Its wonderful job. God bless you. Thank you.
161 dislikes doesn't make sense to me. Who would dislike this recording? It is so beautiful that it is almost impossible to dislike. Come on people!!!🙄
For people who's concerned with music timing or tempo..let me remind you that this is A NOCTURNE for christ sake! not an Etude??! Music is an expression of one's soul through the technique called Rubato..not some metronome set at the suggested tempo. Either you like the interpretation or you don't.
Chopin himself used a lot of rubato. Heck, the entire romantic period was full of it! Funny thing tho, Nathan Shirley (a pianist and composer) has said, although I don’t know exactly where he got this from: “The funny thing is that Chopin himself used an entirely different type of rubato, one which is virtually unknown to pianists today. He would actually keep the left hand very steady, "like the trunk of a tree", while the right hand (melody) we would let freely drift early or late with rubato, "the branches and leaves". It is very hard to find even old recordings where this is done. Cziffra can be heard using it with Chopin. The type of rubato you mention is more of the Lisztian variety which ALL pianists use today. This type can be further divided into the groups of robbing the tempo but giving it back at some point (used more for older music), and robbing and not giving it back (later romantic especially). Anyway, I composed a piece of music where I use Chopin's style of rubato for the main theme, but I actually notated the right hand rubato as rhythmically accurate as possible (without getting ridiculous). Here it is-“ (the piece is called Twilight on the Lake btw. It’s here on RUclips)
I can't read sheet music and I swear I don't know anything about music, I'm a lover who gets caught up in chords and travels to places where few would go. I love this nocturne and consider Arthur Rubinstein his best performer. You, Valentina, were the second person who made me hear and listen to the song several times. Your hands play the piano as if it were so delicate that the notes could get hurt if you "missed" the touch. Sorry for daring to give my opinion. I know that piano is not an easy instrument to learn and requires many years of practice, but I am human and as such I observe and draw conclusions. Congratulations! I wish you fall in love with Chopin and toast us with the most beautiful chords.
Ah!

I was impressed! A bit Lisztian in the middle, but the theme is certainly Chopin.
Thank you.. I think you're right, actually! And there is a bit of Blumenfeld Op.24 near the end, haha.
I really liked it! I've always wondered what the lost works of Chopin contained. It's so sad that there are only 21 nocturnes.
Hard to sight-read Chopin with a 4 month old baby on my lap.. lol
Thank you!
Undoubtedly the most thought-provoking Chopin piece ever. Beautifully done - most people who argue about tempo are people who don't know rubato anyways...forget'em!
La musica fa bene al cuore e all'anima........
La musica può nominare l'innominabile e comunicare l'inconoscibile.
This is wonderful and as close to perfection as I have ever heard this piece played. Be grateful for such a woderful talent.
Absolutely beautiful. This is my favorite Chopin Nocturne. I can never finish listening to it without shedding tears.
this is so beautiful i simply broke down in tears. the piece is remarkable. and valentina, you are so eloquent with each note. this is outright the most technical i have ever seen from any of your videos. i am truly moved deeply. thank you.
Her fingers are pampering the piano chords like a spring breeze!
Valentina...For me...you are the best...!!! from Santiago of Chile, the Claudio Arrau's Country
Cristian Fuentes excelente coterráneo
Somos dos!!!
I have listened to this piece hundreds of times, and this was truly something of an epiphany. It's like a beautiful oration in a foreign language, remarkable in it's own right, but so much more so when you understand it. The piece feels so much more "right" this way.
I like your interpretation and pace. Your performance has inspired me to work at learning to play this piece, a work-in-progress project for me.
It's the first time I hear this piece, but I do not think I need to check out another version of it... This one is absolutely perfect.
This is one for Royal Albert Hall. An exquisite interpretation. Thank you for putting it online.
Mr. Chopin would be proud, you have done this song justice many times over. Magnificent.
This was a thumbs up within 5 seconds. One of my favs, and such a great feel.

Come on people!!!🙄
The interpretation of Valentina Lisitsa meets to perfection the color so indispensable to play Chopin : congratulations!
For people who's concerned with music timing or tempo..let me remind you that this is A NOCTURNE for christ sake! not an Etude??! Music is an expression of one's soul through the technique called Rubato..not some metronome set at the suggested tempo. Either you like the interpretation or you don't.
Me 2! I agree 54Aoran.
I completely agree with you. I'm on the same wavelength as Valentina. And for my taste - her Chopin is the best in the world!
Chopin himself used a lot of rubato. Heck, the entire romantic period was full of it!
Funny thing tho, Nathan Shirley (a pianist and composer) has said, although I don’t know exactly where he got this from:
“The funny thing is that Chopin himself used an entirely different type of rubato, one which is virtually unknown to pianists today.
Here it is-“
(the piece is called Twilight on the Lake btw. It’s here on RUclips)
Exactly!!! She is being as faithful to the score as any other pianist.
This is my favorite performance of the piece. I think her interpretation here is pure perfection.
Interesting how fluid her fingers and hand movements are. It's like she's performing yoga exercises over the keyboard.
so true....when i play this song, my hands are like a mess....a disgrace to see
I find her hands distracting, and that flat handed occasional upward fingering rather annoying to watch.
I completely agree! And I love the way she sings through this piece without even opening her mouth. Such a beautiful performance!
MDkid1 Chopin taught all his students to play like the way she is doing it. Soft lower hands. If you don't like it, close your damn eyes and listen =)
musicpianoman I'd like her to perform some yoga over my keyboard, naaaaasayn
Ballet, musicality and personality at the same time..Thank you so much Valentina! You're the best I've ever SEEN and HEARD!
It looks like as if she was caressing the piano. So gentle, and beautiful it is haunting.. I'm just out of words..
incredible! You should make a nocturnes CD
YAY!!!!
Mike :) oh myyyyyy I WISH
ValentinaLisitsa omg I didn't realize she actually responded. VALENTINA PLEASE PLEASE
On the off chance you see this... Do you or will you have any of your music available in high res formats? (i.e. 24 bit FLAC or DSD/SACD)
Munch, she's a virtuosic pianist lmao you think she's going to answer your tech questions
Thank you Valentina for such a masterful and passionate rendition of this piece.
Really excellent, bravo!
Ah!
Sublime!!!
Valentina interpretation is magical the crescendo leading up to the 1.20 min mark and around about 3.00😢 then the million grace note passage so light ,airy effortlessly...also her chopin etudes are so different anyone else she's amazing!
Started hearing, 30 seconds passed, already crying
Really?! I was so touched but I didn’t 😭
That's because your a Nancy
Indescribably beautiful. This is my favorite interpretation of this my favorite nocturne. It holds a special place in my heart. Thank you Valentina.
this is like.... I'm sweating wow ethereal
This is my favourite. I Just like it played slower. I listened to it while I was staying in the hospital with my premature babies
She is to Chopin what Kempff was to Beethoven. They're perfect for each other and were born to do this
Randy Kern She plays Beethoven and Rachmaninoff at a extreme beauty too. Well she plays all at a extreme beauty...
I dont agree arrau is Beethoven
jorge m Really? I've always held Arrau in as high of esteem as Rubenstein or lisitsa for Chopin.. I guess I've never heard him play Beethoven, which I certainly will now.
I’m so glad you all thought it was imperative I heed your disagreements. So glad!
Simply sublime, fantastic, ethereal, impalpable, light and intense all at the same time. Thanks Valentina
I m impressed none of the shigatsu wa kimi no uso fans commented on this
*ANYONE ELSE FROM [ANIME/VIDEOGAME/FILM]?!!??!?!?! PLEASE LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL IF YOU LIKE MY COMMENT THANKS!!! PEACE
Wilhelm Scream lawl
I'm myself a big shigatsu fan and if there is no one there its maybe because the nocturne wasn't listed in the tracks of the anime.
Actually, I discovered this piece because of this anime.
But maybe there is no dat much "Shigaaaaaaatsu
MrKaheden I liked the anime a lot too (1st anime I ever watched), but I dont really like seeing comments like that flood these videos, and even less on videos with pieces that weren't in the anime.
But yeah, maybe they ARE amazed by her playing lol.
I mean this was barely in there for what, 1 minute? It was hardly even audible and wasn't listed anywhere else as being included, nor was it in the soundtrack. You'd really have to go looking for it.
