The tradition is the Sovereign riding on horseback. Elizabeth kept up the tradition until 1987 when she was 61. Since then she went by carriage. This year, for his first Trooping the Colour”, Charles rode a horse.

Why would it be a surprise that King Charles rode his horse for the parade? It is the done thing for the Monarch to ride his/her horse rather than ride in a carriage. Queen Elizabeth always rode her horse until she felt too old to do so but she hated doing that. She always rode side saddle as well as tradition dictated.
I loved the day. All those bands making me nostalgic for my banding days. Those heavy horses, Juno an Apollo, always melt my heart with those drums beating on their backs. Everything was wonderful and our servicemen performing those tricky, complicated, formation changes and the countermarching were something to be so proud of.

@@ronica4803 I heard that the Queen was told that she’d be required to be on a leading rein and she said no thanks and went by carriage thereafter. Kept riding privately though, including very shortly before her death. Bucket list maybe. I think there were concerns she’d wouldn’t be able to control her mount as well as she did during the incident where someone shot off a starters pistol, or something, and her horse shied with no ill effect.

Still takes guts at the age of 74 to ride out in full view on a new and quite lively young horse, though. I know the Mounties trained her well, as the Guards will have too, but it's hard to mimic a huge noisy crowd with bands playing, glinting armour and hundreds of other horses deploying.

And I am only assuming that William was on one because he Was NOT in the Carriage with Camilla, Katherine & his 3 kids. I hope someone caught single shots of King Charles and William. Happy 1st Birthday as KING...... King Charles.

Glad Drumhorse Apollo, who was personally chosen for the job by the Queen, has overcome the nerves he showed at the Coronation.

@@trixieschneider5553 the British subjects in the colonies were able to defeat the British troops partly due to the vast distance between Britain and its American colonies, this posed significant logistical challenges for the British. Maintaining a steady supply of troops, provisions, and ammunition across the Atlantic Ocean was a considerable undertaking, while the American colonies could rely on local resources and support. Also, France saw an opportunity to weaken its longtime rival, Britain, and provided the colonists with financial aid, military supplies, and even troops.
