Perfect timing with this one Will. Literally just finished sparring a few hours ago and was greatly overwhelmed by my opponent’s strength. I’ll take this advice and hopefully use it on the mats next week. Many thanks 🙏
I’m happy to help, my friend. And remember, as with anything in Jiu Jitsu, you may not see great success with it at first. Keep using it and dialing it in and you eventually be able to effectively use it 🙏🏻 keep up the great work🤝
Seriously perfect timing. I just got promoted to blue and I’m developing a better game plan so this will help. For myself, knee on belly was always used on me until I learned how to defend it. Now, I’m use those upper back/ arm related attacks to transition to kimuras and arm bars. Thanks!
It's true! A few one liner quotes that I've always tried to follow by is the famous "position before submission" followed up by "pressure before position" the last one meaning if you are okay with hold a position that is tiring your opponent. Such as mount or a side control variation. Hold that position for a while before searching for a submission or the setup for one. Let your opponent get tired.
I train a lot although I am hobbyist.I've mainly trained in striking and my cardio is pretty good...I can do 10 rounds during sparring in Boxing or Kickboxing and not gas out.I started grappling recently as a Jiu Jitsu white belt and also a beginner's level MMA class which involves lots of wrestling and grappling and it's so much more exausting....I've already had to tap out just by being mounted on the ground by a more experienced partner who knows how to keep you down and tire you out either with a body lock or just laying flat on you and crushing your breathing ability. It's so different from stand up cardio...very humbling!!
@@michaelm9710 i think you're right. it seems lately i'm not tapping out because of exaustion like I would in the beginning.Learning how to control breathing and cardio for a 5 minute roll.If I'm mounted learning how to move slightly to an angle where I am still getting some air to survive and look for that moment to start the escape.Of course I am still getting tapped out by the more experienced people but now it is when I make a strategic error out of ignorance that they capitilize on..
I haven’t been doing JJ very long, but I did learn that being a heavier guy, Kesa-gatame is your friend to slow down those quick/agile partners and get them breathing heavy. Great content as always!
Man, your vids break stuff down so good, I can really use a lot of these tidbits, as I'm usually up against stronger guys in class, as I'm around 174lbs. I'm stout, but a lot of those dudes have significant weight advantages, so I have to get creative. This stuff might help me save some gas for later in sparring. Appreciate you 🤙🤙
when standing you can simply lean a little forwards like they do in Judo; subtly putting extra weight onto them while holding higher up the lapel/collar and still maintaining a solid base/stance. Works VERY well for me as a short sht
Great video! As a new white belt, I've been smashed by the upper belts in each way you describe. It's awful to be deprived that pocket of oxygen while completely gassed out. Worse that being choked IMO. If I can't breathe while my heart is red-lining and I start to see the darkness setting in around my peripheral vision, I tap every time.
I've used the double under many times. It's a great resting position as well as great for set-ups for arm locks and arm triangles. Sometimes bigger stronger opponents are able to buck and bridge to get me off, but then I try to stay heavy and stay sticky.
Wonder why this great athlete just have 18.000 followers. Great vegan muscle beast. I followed him on instagram some years ago. Great job Will and nice tips! 🎉💪😎
@@willbrooksofficial thanks man. Love your content cuz of it's not the bollocks stuff like some other. Just to mention "i followed you" just means I have no instagram anymore. Keep it up brother and I and I'm sure "we" would appreciate more yt videos about bjj 💪🥳
Hi will ! thnks for the advice great 🎉 Can you please make a video showing us how to breathe while rolling? I notice that I'm blocking my breathing when rolling I don't know why 🥵
I once rolled with a powerlifter and he was too strong, i caught him in half guard, tired him out, waited for him to get out of breath, then rotated into closed guard and submitted him with kimura, since then, this has been my strategy with powerlifters.
I recently had a sparring session with my chinese teacher who also trains BJJ. She is a blue belt I'm a white belt and eventhough I outweight her she of course is much better than I am. So I had to wear her out a little bit to not get constantly tapped😅. Kesa Gatame was perfect for that. I wasn't a complete asshole about it and when I noticed she really can't get out, I changed position so she can do something about me. After all she is supposed to beat me up and I'm supposed to learn from it as a white belt.
The position itself won’t score points unless you’re competing under a unique rule set. You would score points by passing the guard. Ending up in this position is great for tiring out your opponent, plus there’s several cool submissions from there.
Anyone that says tiring out your opponent is cheap isn't a real competitor or even fighter. It ALWAYS comes down to who is smarter and better conditioned or not even that just who knows how to make you less conditioned and not be able to fight anymore.
I was rolling with a guy who outweighed me by 50 lbs. I caught him in a triangle and he tapped. He said it didn't really count since I pulled on his head into his own arm which smothered both his nose and mouth so he couldn't breathe lol
You honestly can’t see any benefit to training in a Gi? How long have you been training? And no one said that Gi is useful in nogi…what a weird comment lol
@@willbrooksofficial I was merely being a troll against pajama party peoples. You are allowed to larp as ancient samurai if you want in my country. Who am I to say anything about it. Love the content and I love BJJ but American Jiujitsu is better imo. Where wrestling and BJJ are counter sides to the same coin.
Gi makes it easier for them to hold you down, so if you can get good at getting out of trouble in gi, then it will be even easier in no gi. If you get good at doing submissions in no gi, then it will be even easier to do submissions in gi because you have more to grab onto. They can both help the other form.

You’ll gain the conditioning pretty quickly. I think about 5 to 6 months and conditioning gets going. It’s interesting how you suddenly notice it
