    My son loved a dirt spot/pile/hole or any combination of those for years. Starting around 2 with toddler sized Tonka Trucks, he had to use them in the back yard. As his "spots" began to grow, I asked him to move away from the steps to the porch. After the dog fell into a unknown hole, nearly choking himself to death with his tie out, I had to give my son a designated area. As he grew older and his trucks got bigger so too did his holes. By the time he was in school every little boy in the neighborhood wanted to come play in his hole. Leggo neighborhoods and action figures played out disasters and heroic rescues on a daily basis. He eventually dug a hole big enough for him and a friend to sit in and the dirt and rocks became walls and mountains around them. His friends mothers asked me if I was going to let him keep it etc. I said of course! For the price of some grass seed when he no longer plays with it, he has had years of washable fun, not in front of the TV, using his imagination and building skills. Best toy ever! Eventually he outgrew his hole and we filled it back in. At his high school graduation I had kids coming up to me saying they would always remember me and the hole I let them have. It was something that they would never forget about their childhood no matter where life took them.

    I used to feel that way too about radishes and turnips, but this year we grew a ton of both and they HAVE saved me money, because I’ve been using watermelon radishes in place of carrots in soups and stews..and then the white turnips and daikon radishes I’ve been using in place of potatoes. We’ve done daikon French fries, zuppa toscano soup with daikons instead of potatoes, and mashed daikons (like mashed potatoes).

      That is awesome! 🙌 I hadn't thought of that! Maybe I should try daikon? 🤔 Thank you for the inspiration Molly!

Can't believe that he stayed with the project all the way through, in spite of the dino drama. I expect great things from him in the future with these rich experiences growing up.

    I've started becoming quite fond of the market garden model. For home gardeners who don't have tons of acres but want to grow enough food to feed their family, it seems like the way to go. Boutique gardening is great for pinterest, market garden is for high yield is small spaces.

    It looks great! I can't wait to turn most of my lawn into gardens. I waste money on other things that I could use for my garden. I'm guilty of going to the store to buy items to make a meal, and that one meal and a few other things ends up costing me 30 to 40 dollars. If I would have stayed home and ate beans, rice, canned vegetables or other things in my pantry, I'd still have that money to spend on my garden. Gardening can be expensive to get started, I eat a lot more beans now! 😁

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  Год назад +2

      LOL! Yes, it can be expensive to get started. I would say sweet potatoes and seminole pumpkins can have a really good return on your investment and don't take a lot of cost to get going.

    May I suggest something to you about your garden's perimeter? The stuff we Floridians call grass sends out runners that thrive in the wood-chips and mulch. If you don't make a bare-earth perimeter around your mulch perimeter then you will get thousands of runners undermining your mulch and then your garden. The solution is to make a 12 inch perimeter of bare -earth that you can monitor for runners. Lookin' good.

  • @johngault8688
    @johngault8688 Год назад +1

    There's no running in my yard/jungle/forest. However, I am a runner and I do like to run through various neighborhoods to get ideas of what else I can do in my yard. While kids can't run in my yard, they can explore and see some very interesting things in nature.

    Looks awesome.. .1.How will you keep critters out of your new backyard garden? 2. Are you concerned about growing veggies in grass previously treated with chemicals? (Like mine) and 3. No cardboard? Are you worried about weeds eventually invading? I ask bc I am planning the same thing in my front yd but don't want to use raised beds if possible.

    I'm get so excited when you post a new video. I need so much help since I'm very clueless about growing in Florida. & you are so close to our area & I am pretty sure we are in the same zone too. One of my boys are worried I'm gonna take over to much of our yard & he won't have enough room for his dreams for the yard. It's so interesting how you track everything. &I love how well you & your husband team work it. I will most likely be on my own trying to make my dreams come true. Hopefully I can get my family into helping. I love how David the Good has his kids helping too. My kids like to plant &maybe water & pick the foods but can't really get them into weeding. Which I understand because that has always been my least favorite part too especially when I was a kid. Your kids are so adorable.

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  Год назад +2

      I went to the city website and found it under the waste management section. It may be similar for your city or county. One of the keys was understanding what happened with brush removal that landscapers took. They hand it over to the city is what I heard from them and then my city makes mulch and compost.
