Black Corporation Deckard's Voice // Dreamy Eurorack Synth Voice
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 июл 2024
- Here’s the PROTOTYPE Deckard’s Voice module from Black Corporation. It’s a monophonic analogue Eurorack synth voice based on the Deckard’s Dream polyphonic since - which in itself is a replicant with a serious nod to the classic Yamaha CS-80. In 32HP is features an analogue oscillator, two LFOs, two envelopes, two filters and plenty of CV ins and outs. For a detailed run down download the free PDF quickstart I’ve made and linked below.
PROTOTYPE - this is a pre release prototype unit, final tweaks and adjustments may be made in the production version.

I like how he just nonchalantly has an Erica Synths Black Sequencer in his rack. No big deal.
I just saw that and thought the same thing.
one that has an alpha v0.3 OS and will be ready next year
This thing is so impressive, it highlights what makes eurorack so interesting - small companies with big ideas.
I'd love to have eight of these
in a more convenient MPE controlled environment perhaps?
I dunno man, to me CV/Gate is too powerful to trade for polyphony. But... that's just moi.
This was exactly what I was thinking. We can slowly build a CS-80 in Euro.
Uhhh maybe you just want a Deckard's Dream 🙂
@@_skysick_ but with the ability to do crazy modular stuff to it!
OMG I have been lusting over the deckards dream for ages but couldnt justify it since I only use modular... this is the BEST NEWS EVER
Hey Colin, would love to hear you jamming on this! :)
@@DivKid Just saw its in preorder phase, raiding my bank tonight
caught a bit of your stream and cool to see how excited you are for it! :)
let's catch up soon!
I really love your tutorials man. I didn’t know what I’d do without them
Was waiting on this! Excited to see it come out.
Love this demo and module oh so much!
Some of these tones remind me of the analord series. And of course the cs-80, this sounds really powerful, awesome
Love the FM tones
I really appreciate this video, I’ve been searching for a good demo video of the Deckards voice for well ever since the module came out. Maybe you could do the Rachel ring modulator next?
very interesting, and sounds beautiful ....
"replicant of the cs-80" I see what you did there.
with my eyeballs.
which were a motif in the film.
see I can do references too.
Nailed it.
Sounds lovely.
Sounds nice, a bit cramped, but also reminiscent of the control panel under the flap on the CS80-fun.
Been waiting this. I dont mind exploring this baby whole day. lol.
Good Job! Thanks for sharing.
And there I was waiting for the Voight-Kampff patch...
Followed by the bullet under the table patch!
Finally some news on this thing!
soon we have more Eurorack module producers than buyers.
: )
definitely lots of growth on the maker side. However Roman behind Black Corporation used to make the Sputnik Modular Eurorack modules, so maybe that's a direct 1 for 1 situation :)
@@DivKid Roman? that sounds familiar
Roman F, used to make the Buchla format clone PCBs etc, then he was behind Sputnik Modular and now he's with Black Corporation.
We still need MORE suppliers... how many good analog drum modules are available... how about an analog 808 cymbal module, a reissue of the "synbal" for eurorack. So on and so on.... How about a synth manufacturer reissuing a 1v oct keyboard for eurorack. How about an analog drum trigger board with 5volt one shots with individual output per trigger. I would happily buy all of these products if someone smarter than me would make them!
Just check modulargrid, all you listed is there. For 1v oct Keyboard the Keystep is a cheap option. I guess the A-155 from doepfer would suit your need on a per step trigger out. There are 8000+ good options out there to be creative :)
The audio rate LFO sound like the old transporter control in the original Star Trek pilot episode.
I really like the filter, it would be great if the BC made a separate VCF module!
Very nice. I am hoping to get close with my Oscillation & SE88 filter. I am missing the Rachael. I hope you would demo that one soon as well :-)
Sounds very close to the SE-80 which is, of course, another synth inspired by the CS-80 (filter) but this has lots more mod options. Nice.
Just placed my pre-order, thank to you again. What a steal at that price, considering the quality and the possibilities is has. Can't wait, to play with it...
very nice review
thanks
I think a lot of the feature from the original Yamaha CS-80 on which this is based on was control over the aftertouch keyboard controls. Plus drenched in the reverb used by Vangelis for the Blade Runner OST.
imagine the hp on this thing if it had knobs. Sliders are totally the way to go.
love sliders over knobs
OMG I never knew that this was coming down the road! Sounds fantastic but definitely an HP hog. Price is not too bad considering what you are getting.
I love when filters have something to chew on
Well said. I keep trying other kinds of synthesis and my basic ass always comes back to subtractive. Nothing is as immediately satisfying as carving up the same old classic waveforms with different filters and envelopes.
I need 4 of these with a polyphonic touch plate keyboard hoo boy
I'd like two, please and the Rachael expander.
Brilliance CV is a bit of a mystery when modulated at audio rates. Doesn't hit those vowel timbres you'd expect, and if you wish to blend key tracking with any other filter mod you'll need to use a mixer. As soon as you plug a cable into the Brilliance CV the filter closes a lot, even if no signal come into it. Just oddities worth mentioning. Lovely toned otherwise.
A rapid calculation: 4 Deckard's Voice modules give a decent "Poly 4 Behringer style" 4 channel poly version for 2800 EUR, way cheaper than a DD {or Deckard's plus Rachel) and of course for a mere crumbs compared to the original CS80, even after adding a few additional modules (S/H, ring mod, midi-cv converter and mixer, out of the Behringer 100M range, for example) and a poly aftertouch midi kbd
Alas, even the full Deckard's Dream simply doesn't sound like a CS-80. If it did, the price tag would be well worth it.
I rearranged my rack recently. I had a bunch of haphazardly placed modules in two cases with a bunch of empty space. It was very un-optimized. There was one relatively large module I decided I really didn't like, so I took the opportunity to de-clutter. I removed the unwanted module, and fit it all into one case with 2hp left to spare. I triumphantly removed the second case from my desk.
Looks like it's about to make a comeback.
So, I know a lot of the Yamaha CS series synthesizers were based on the same ICs for oscillators and such and there are a lot of similarities between them, and the most advanced single oscillator one that Yamaha made was the CS10(the CS5 is a bit more simple, doesn't have dual envelopes, no variable pulse width), so I am curious how similar this is to sounds of the CS10? Is it basically the same as a CS10 with patching capabilities and dual filters?
Wow!
Thanks DivKid for you educational demonstration. I was debating between keeping a Cwejman synth voice for my Waldorf kb37 keybed skiff, or sell it and get this one. There’s 104 available now, shipping direct from black-corporation.com , from Japan at $699 per voice. I will be buying one shortly. Hopefully they’ll get the stand alone expansion Rachel out soon too, do you know anything about that? Thanks for your contributions.
Is there any video of the Rachael Expander? I knew about the voice but I didn't know that was a thing until I read the comments here
Not yet, this prototype is going back and I'll have the final release version and Rachael together soon hopefully.
Oh la la !
change AM to ampmod or so and the timestamps will work
Hi Div great vid. How deep is the module?
nice
I notice sometimes we see an Erica Synth module and then a scope. What's going on there?
It sounds superfat but although it definitely has a lot of character, I can't really say that it reminds me of a CS80.
I agree. It's a nice synth, but it's not a CS-80. I don't just mean the module; even the full Deckard's Dream doesn't do a convincing impression of a CS-80. If it did, I'd buy one right away.
so can you mult the output and quantize that through like an o_c for a pseudo four voice "polyphony" (sorry if that's an obvious yes or no, i'm still just a eurorack poser who watches a lot of videos but can't afford anything yet)
Hi Riley, nothing sorry to be about with "obvious" questions or anything. We all start not knowing these things. A quantiser is for the voltages that control the pitch information going into an oscillator. A quantiser doesn't actually process audio. So the quick answer is NO you can't quantise the output to make chord tones.
As of 2/24/2021 Black Corporation’s web site is down. You get a 403/forbidden error now.
Sold me on the multi track
yeah it layers up with itself nicely.
How much this cost?
Sounds very good.
I'm trying to figure out the patch @13:45 to make it without the Deckards Voice... How is this done? The LFO speed is modulated with the 1/vOct and than that result is (attenuated) modulating the v/Oct to the again? would that be the same as using an exp (or lin) FM in on an Oscillator?
you need an LFO with FM input (1v/oct ideally, EXP FM on it if not) and patch your 1v/oct sequence into that. So the rate of the LFO changes according to the pitches played/sequenced.
Send the 1v/oct to the oscillator that is the core sound in the patch too. Then onto filtering/VCAs/FX as you like.
Try patching the now 1v/oct modulated LFO (above) into the FM input on the VCO to give you vibrato. You could also try patching that to a filter cut off, wave fold amount or anything out.
@@DivKid ok, understood, Thanks! The LFO needs to go into the FM mod of the osc. The higher the pitch, the more vibrato it will get from the LFO which is also modulated with the same 1v/oct for the osc.
you won't have more of less vibrato depending on the pitch. Just faster or slower LFO rates for the vibrato.
If you wanted larger modulation depths then use 1v/oct to control the level of a VCA with a modulation signal through the VCA. So higher notes give more (wider voltage range) modulation and lower notes give less modulation.

"Replicant" nice
C maj 7 arpeggio = Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein Soundtrack riff?
the latest season wasn't out at the time to riff on master of the puppets.
Oe, want :) is there a price indication yet?
$199 deposit at pre-order and another $500 when ready to ship I believe. Info here - bit.ly/DeckardsVoice
im looking for a way to tune my DV, but there is no support anywhere to be found? any ideas would be greatly appreciated
what i really mean is calibrate
contact on their website? Social media account messages? There's calibration trimmers on the back of the module I think, are they labelled with anything?
@@DivKid got a reply from BC and sorted it out! thank you
glad to hear it, thanks for letting us know.
I would love to hear this through an Instruo Harmonaig or other mono to poly module.
Harmonaig and other modules like aren't mono to polyphonic as quantisers and similar devices don't do anything with audio. They take pitch information such as from a sequencer of keyboard and then quantise that to set scales and also generate intervals/harmonies. So the Harmonaig could quantise external voltages then I could put those into the 1v/oct input on this module. But to get the full root, third, fifth and seventh from the Harmonaig I'd need 4 of these to plug into to control them as a chord.
My impression of that module was way off! Guess I'll just have to sample it if I decide to pick it up. Thanks for setting me straight, Ben. Cheers.
The price tag is surprisingly low!
I mean, it's by no means overpriced but it definitely brought a tear to my eye lol
A CS80 voice without the so special ring modulator that was part of the sound of this machine is a bit a shame.
True, but this doesn't sound like a CS-80 anyway. Probably better to think of it as a totally different synth, which is what it is.
the black corporation lists a ring modulator/lfo module as a separate add on. "price on request"
So technically could you self patch this?
As extremely out of budget as this is for me, considering its a mono voice; I can't help but drool over it in the same way I drool over the Dream. Very cool!
and on youtube aswel
Simple VCF
ruclips.net/video/cOz11CAlHPA/видео.html
But almost 800? ;(
I'll take 4 plz
I'll be expecting Ricky Tinez to buy 12 of these any day now haha
I've wanted to order this and I've have been pleading with them for 18 months to do a video demonstrating this unit since they announced it. I didn't want to give them $200 nearly 2 years ago to have it sit in limbo. Nothing, but they are accepting money for pre-orders without showing sonic examples. Glad they contracted you to make this excellent video - it sounds great. Black Corporation are STILL not able to deliver this module with no estimated time frame, and while I'm sympathetic, it was very late even before there was a pandemic. What's the holdup? Feels like this is the "cirklon" of eurorack modules. I'd gladly buy one and my friend wanted to pick one up as well.
It definitely is a cool synth in the rack... But at $700? A bit steep for me.
The Yamaha CS-80 would be a perfect instrument for Behringer to clone. One can only hope.
It would be awesome if they did it but made it look less like an old organ, as gorgeous sounding as the CS-80 is, it looks like a cheesey old organ.
ok now i know why i will be broke in the next years
Really great sound, but still not much of a CS-80 here. I mean, I would like to have this modul, based on sound and programmability, but not for “that” classic sound.
Agree. The classic sound is simply not there.
woody
I’m not hearing anything that great here. It sounds nice I guess but nothing special.
Sponsored by Black Corporation? Hello impartiality!
Well is a demo/tutorial or overview, not a review. So bias/impartiality has nothing to do with it.
To be crystal clear (best way of course) they sent me this module to make a video in return for the unit. People make content get paid in a variety of ways (as do I). For 7 years now I've been making detailed, in depth videos aiming to demonstrate the raw sounds and functions of devices and then provided synthesis and sound design tips by provided a range of musical examples.
As I'm not comparing it to anything, telling you to buy one, or giving it some sort of review of score ... importability has nothing to do wit it.
You might want to learn about the device, hear how it sounds and whether that's for you (or not). I hope this video does that for you.
I welcome any comment/feedback/criticism though so feel free to respond how you see fit.
Cheers!
Nobody cares what MrArseSoiled thinks
@@DivKid Thank you for exploring and demonstrating what this sounds like sir !
Being unable to afford to buy you all the modules you test and demonstrate, I am more than happy that you get to try out and own many, many more modules.... whoever makes them, and whoever sends them to you !
Maybe the impartial troll police could send you some modules made by other manufacturers for free, so that you can be even more impartial in your reviews .... :-D
Please keep doing what you do .... I enjoy listening, learning and watching you explore modules ... your experience and enthusiasm helps erase the unpleasant comments of the envious and peevish ones .... XD
WAKE UP SHEEPLE! BREAD IS A CONSPIRACY THEORY MADE UP BY THE BREAD COMPANIES TO SELL MORE BREAD.
i feel like there should be a Bat signal made out of the Yamaha logo, so everytime a cs80 is mentioned someone can call Kent @TheKsr80
