Been waiting for a decent head to head on the Ese-Nin to J-8, especially from someone who knows from Roland gear, like one Mr. Alex Ball. Roland has utterly eschewed the retro gear market, unlike Korg, and it’s certainly cost them in gear purchases on my part; one D-50 Boutique vs. an Arp Odyssey FS, MS-20 FS, Arp 2600M, and a MiniKorg 700 FS. Crazy that a desktop unit that's nearly 4 grand can save money. As much as I want one too, if I had the money for one, I'd get the Nina instead. Don't get me wrong. I want both. But just sayin'.
Usually the modern versions have a brighter high end and cleaner sound due to components, and it seems that way here. I would say the pad sound at 8.56 shows the Jupiter 8 being more lovely but I think it has a bit more detuning and resonance, so its possible that the NIN can be closer...love the jams - especially the last one! Great video and good job to Black Corporation - its a cracking synth for a fraction of what a J8 costs on the used market in a usable package...
I hear a slightly harsh resonance on the NIN vs the original, on a number of sounds.. the top end 'fizz' as someone mentioned, but I don't like the sound of that resonance (the OB-6 sounds better up top than the NIN from what I can hear). JP-8 sounds great of course.
Excellent as usual. Considering you had to match sounds by using the sliders you nailed the match as well as could be expected. Nice synth. Surely much more affordable than a vintage one. sounds great.... in your hands.. 👍👍
Great video. Sounds awesome as always. The synth harkens back to a time when synths were out of reach of the average consumer at $3879, and $10,000 for the Ukraine edition, which probably goes to charity or something I assume. I just wasn't seeing anyone say the price in the comments, cause that's a hefty amount for most people.
Even heftier in Europe. Currently €5,333 at Thomann/EU 😲 which is about $5,850 USD (Aug/2023 )
A fifth of the price, and I can't afford that either. 🙂
I pray to Uli every night to finish the Jupiter-8 clone!
Very YMO outro, I like it.
Praise the Uli :D
Uli Jon Roth?

Are they actually making one? I've lost track of the announcements, but haven't seen many come out.
What does Black say about pronunciation? "EE-See Neen" or "Ice-Nine?"
EE-See-Neen is how Bob from Black Corp says it.
Hello Alex: I really like the little incantations for conjuring up the Rolands. The were most imaginative. Look after yourself.
have you considered doing a video about how the creepshow score was made? its got some awesome synth wizardry strewn throughout the whole film, would love to see you do a vid on it at some point
