Same noise on my 09 T6 XC70. It just went away and now the fan will not blow stronger than low. I can only hope that the resistor that is associated with the controller is still good. Time to replace the blower motor. Thank you for posting that video and this video. Your channel and content are VERY helpful. I appreciate you.
Had the same problem in my '12 XC70 the last winter (noise came at really cold temperatures [-10°c] oly) - dealership said they were unable to reproduce the noise and didn't want to do anything about it since it was not 100% certain to be the fan. Your video helped me to prove them wrong and make the Volvo dealer aware of what's wrong. That saved me 1,300.00 € since the replacement was covered by the extended waranty...which runs out this summer. Thanks for yor great videos!!!
Folks, This is a big job and time-sucker. No need to disassemble your dash and fight to get the fan in and out. Easy solution 5-minute fix 1. Open the hood. 2 Remove the plastic panel clips and lift the panel under the wiper blade arms. No need to remove wipers. 3. Turn on blower fan and turn off recirculation mode so the fresh outside air enters and the fresh air door remains open 4. lift the panel up on the passenger side and you will see the squirrel cage to the blower motor and the blend door should be open. 5. Use spray lubricant (I use Tri-Flow) and spray behind the squill cage onto the outside bearing. This should fix it. You might have a bit of lubricant smell for a few minutes that goes away shortly. No more noise! Works every time. Or you could pay your mechanic a ton of money if you feel you need to replace the fan motor.
@@zsoltzenta3195 just try it you have nothing to lose. Spray WD or other lube on the bearing behind the squirrel cage. Our xc60 going good now for 2 years and no more noise.
@@GregQuirin THX, I have the same problem in my C70 mk2. It only makes the noise over 140km/h. I hope i can access the fan easily. I will try it at the weekend. I will write the result :)
Hi, where do you exactly spray? Does the inside mainly need lubrication (the part behind the tip in the middle)? Were you able to reach inside far enough to spray in there specifically? Did you have the fan on or off? I tried it but didn't help a lot (yet). I however sprayed from a bit of a distance on the blower since I couldnt get near enough to the fan. Tried it while it was running and while it was stationary and let it sit for a few minutes. Used FPTE based spray.
Eric Di Fate I have already purchased this blower motor HELLA 351040271 on RockAuto.com from LR LR2 2010. Fits Volvo. The noise is more bad now. Soon will replace it. Will be fun!
10+ years of XC70/V70s and I've had to replace far to many blower fans. Vw's have their own HVAC issues. My two favorite cars piss me off on these topics!
I had to open mine up and apply silicone lubricant on the fan on my 1986 volvo 740 gle. Solved the issue. At least on the 740 water enters that compartment.
I have this problem on my 08 V70 2,5T with 260000 km (161500 miles) on it, since last year. I "fixed" the problem the same way as @GregQurin then and have to do so again now. Other than that this car has performed extremely well with only two repairs (right headlight and rear suspension bushings) other than normal service and wear parts. I live in Scandinavia so the climate is hard on cars but so far I am happy with it. Maybe I have jinxed it now though.
volvosweden On second thought, I don't think I'll last that long... it's getting too loud to bear. Come to think of it, it only started squealing once the temperature plummeted from 60F to 20F, so maybe it'll get better once it warms up again.
+The Tyrant Its not an easy diy job as I see. You need a special tool to remove the blower fan. I have custom made one. Mine is noisy at times. So I will wait for a good weather. I like to film in good lighting.
I just saw on your 'side mirror' video that the winter is almost gone. Same here. Today 15 degrees and sun :-) Can't wait til you make the video about de fan replacement. ;-)
Hey VolvoSweden, I know you replace it and I watched your great video. However, I am wondering if lubricating the fan shaft/bearing/ bushing would fix the noise. I have the same issue with my 2013 XC70. Kindly advice!
Do you know what the part number is on that assembly? I saw FoMoCo stamped on the black housing, meaning the Ford part may be a cheaper alternative for us in the states. Thanks!
Hi Volvo Sweden. I have a 2013 XC70 T6. My blower fan works fine, no noise, but I have a burning smell in the cabin. Could that smell possibly be from the blower fan resistor? Thanks for any insight you may have.
Can't wait until you upload when you replace the blower motor. Mine has started to make noise as well... 2008 v70 14.500km. Have you replaced the trailing blade bushings in the rear suspension yet? They are not worn by milage, it's corrosion under the rubber.
Fast forward to fall of 2023. Dealer wants $1800 to replace. A lot of that is labor, plus ridiculous markups on the part cost. I wish someone had an x,y,z location you could run a thin tube up to the end of the shaft and hit it with a spray lube. I did not like seeing the FoMoCo on this part. It's Ford quality, not Volvo. Not that that matters much 🙂
Perhaps poor design, hopefully they don't do it on an intend :) These blowers are quite identical on BMW's, Range Rover, etc and they also go bad. Perhaps they have no choice but to source them from Behr Hella and Behr must have some terrible engineers who don't care about customer feedback and quality improvement. Sometimes you cannot change the supplier even when his products suck. Some suppliers have grown so large companies that there's no competition left and you have no choice but to buy from them.
Any update on video on how to do this? My '10 XC60 has had the same problem for a few years now. Only shows up during winter on cold days. But I've had enough and would love a walk through of how to fix it.
My xc70 2008 245 000 km was doing the noise. My mecanic cleaned it with acetone , cant say if he used lubricant after . It as been 4 years now and it still good.
I have a 2013 volvo v60 100000 miles on the clock. My blower makes a horrible noise ( like a diesel boat engine ) and make the whole dashboard shake on higher speed. Not easy job to replace... whole dashboard needs to come off.... very disappointed with the poor quality

Useful info - thank you :-)
These go bad on all 2008+ models, S80, S60, V60, XC60 and on the newer XC90 as well. About $1500 job at the Volvo dealer, and it's a recurring problem

i believe it is
No, just order the motor and wheel assembly from rockauto
I'm driving my V70 in middle east. Same problem i faced at 375000 km. Dealer told me replacement cost me 900$. Too expensive.

Im pretty sure that this noise is related to dry air. Im getting noise only in winter and when its below -10c. no noise at all spring/summer.
I have the same problem sometimes. When you will change the blower fan?
very soon. its on order now.
volvosweden I had the same noise. I cleaned and degreased everything with a pipe cleaner and solvent. Then reapplied plenty of grease. Problem solved.
+PrinssiFO Did you do it on the car or the fan out of the car?
volvosweden Fan out. Otherwise it would be difficult.
+PrinssiFO Got it. But isn't it more reliable just to put in a new one after all the labour took to take it out.
I have the same noise on my 2007 s80... look like a shit access to be replaced it... i Will try to get acces from the glove box first but how
