Joe articulated an excellent point which had not properly clikced in my head prior to this video. There is a clear through line running between the Tories' performative "boat" politics, the hard right's constant desire to misattribute declining living standards (mostly in part due to austerity politics and wilful economic vandalism commited by 14 years of Tory government) and any and all societal ills as the collective fault of 'non-white' minorities, and the current and previous governments abandonment of the universal values of human rights, as exemplified in the way they have kowtowed to perpetrators of genocide (amongst many other examples). The common thread between all of these examples is a narrowing definition of "humanity" in the eyes of an alarmingly large number of British people.
Decline started with thatcher destroying the livelihood of entire regions of the country without offering alternatives or assistance. It's been downhill from there.
That's it. Let us label the protestors as far-right Owen Jones. Let's claim the attacker has mental health issues and listens to voices in his head. I find it quite interesting how differently people are speaking about the Leeds and Southport riots. In the aftermath of the Leeds riots, commentators repeatedly referred to the need to acknowledge the concerns and grievances of the community, despite the fact that the violence was equally 'senseless', having been started by a false rumour. The Southport riots appear to be equally senseless, insofar as it was started by false rumours spread online. Nonetheless, if we were to be consistent, wouldn't we regard and treat both in the same way?
There's no place for sensible opinions on here. But Kudos for trying. The main difference is the Leeds rioters were trying to protect their local community whereas the rioters in Southport were trying to attack their local community. Both were motivated by misinformation but had very different intentions.

imo, the “sliding doors” moment of british political discourse was during the 2010 election campaign, when gordon brown gave that grovelling apology to that “bigoted woman” (which she clearly was). if he had held his nerve and condemned bigotry in the strongest possible way at that time, i suspect things would have been very different. that apology gave the far right (at that stage on the fringes of british politics) the confidence to spout their horrific views in mainstream media outlets without the fear of being called out for their bigotry.

Well done Owen for presenting the truth
Humanity versus particularity = lumpen mass versus selfish gene.
Thank you for a balanced sensible talk
That's it. Let us label the protestors as far-right Owen Jones. Let's claim the attacker has mental health issues and listens to voices in his head. Let us conveniently ignore the fact that an individual showed up at the vigil for the murdered children holding a knife and then when challenged ran into a Mosque. If that wasn't an act of deliberate provocation then I don't know what is.
The nearest mosque is 800 metres from where the vigil was, so that 32-year old from Standish should be in the Olympics, or whoever fooled you into believing he ran into a mosque (despite being swiftly arrested near the vigil) is a liar.
