Wow, depending on which system you had the childhood experience with this game could've been insanely different. I'm still glad I had the Genesis version over the Snes, yeah it's a bullet hell side scrolling beat'em up Contra clone, but they went all out on the bosses for that version and I wouldn't have been able to play it with my uncles if it hadn't had been 2 player. I am happy to see that some clever design went into the Snes version, but the pacing is way lower and probably wouldn't have held the attention span of my sugar rush child brain back in the day.

Honestly, whenever I see these comparisons, I always look at or play the full games before judging here, and my final opinion here follows:
SNES is clearly more true to the show, with a similar score to the show as well. I like how you progress through stages, using items of sorts in your main arsenal to advance and help you through. The graphics here are colorful and accurate to the show as well. However, I think it plays a little too slow in some parts and the lack of a 2-player mode is truly disappointing.
Genesis version is practically an entire new game on its own, which means there's going to be a lot to talk about here... There are 3 weapons in the game, each that can prove itself useful in some sort of way. Also, there are four levels in the entire game, and while some segments may be too long (Level 2-2 anyone?), each one takes you to some sort of new twist whilst keeping the frantic gameplay. The graphics are some of the most impressive in the 16-bit era as well, with 3D scrolling, tons of fully animated enemies, details, and objects, and heavy use of scaling and rotation, all with no slowdown at all. And those boss battles... they are some of best 16-bit boss battles I have ever seen, especially the Mad Hatter. Plus, the music is amazing and original, and 2-player mode is a thing here. My problems with the game however are the aforementioned overly long stages and also that it's too difficult (at first). The game does get loads easier with practice though, so it can be taken as a positive aspect too.
Final assessment? I think the Genesis version is LOADS better than the SNES version. It may not be as true to the show like the SNES game, but its fun factor, graphics, bosses, and various other aspects destroy the SNES version entirely imo.

@@manmonkee The SNES would not have problems with running a game like Genesis Batman and Robin. I can't believe such a misconception persists to this day. The only games I'm aware of for the Sega Genesis that probably wouldn't work well on the SNES are 3D polygonal games because those don't use any of the built in routines of the systems powerful GPU. Of course, that is why the FX Chip among other upgrades existed. There are plenty of two-player action games available for the SNES that get plenty of stuff on the screen while simultaneously displaying some nice visuals.

Genesis is being pushed it to its limits for some stunning graphical results where it would be hard to squeeze much more out the system there imo, whereas the SNES version, while looking very pretty for the most part, clearly isn't pushing the SNES close to its limits graphically in many places and could in fact do more in most scenes.
A simple example would be the first level in both games, where, along with a bunch of other tricks, the Genesis version even uses the shadow/highlight feature for a nice glow on the torches of some enemies, whereas the street lamp in the foreground of the SNES version doesn't even use the system's advanced transparency abilities to light up the scene and any characters that pass under it. And that's just one example in that first level. I think even more could have been done in that scene and many others on SNES to really make it more of a graphical showcase to go along with being a visual one.
Both are clearly high quality games though, where the Genesis version is a pure graphical showcase and the SNES version is mostly a visual showcase that more closely replicates the actual cartoon's look and sound.

    • @davidaitken8503
      @davidaitken8503 4 года назад

@Lionel Blanc-guilhon If the game was pushing the Genesis to its' limits, it probably wouldn't run so consistently smooth. I never understand how people think a game that runs flawlessly is pushing something to its' limits? I know some of it is just good optimization, but do you really think the Genesis is working as hard as it is on a game such as Ernest Evans? That game gets a ton of sprites out on the screen and slows down quite heavily. It's funny how people like to bash Gradius 3 on the SNES for having a lot of slowdown, but is there a shooter on the Genesis that pushes anywhere near as many sprites on the screen? With better optimization, the later Parodius games ran much better too.
As far as my comments regarding the effects, let me reiterate that I am not bashing the craftsmanship and skill that they were able to manipulate the visuals. I'm simply saying that Genesis games that used lots of scan line effects were a dime a dozen.

The genesis always had more characters on screen and more action going on with out any slowdown.. at the expense of sound and graphics.. but growing up with first a master system and then a genesis, obviously i'll give sega the win here ;) however the Snes version looks nice too and i'll give its try..

So...I know quite a bit about this game. For example all the technical feats the Sega Genesis port throws all over the screen. The Snes port I have never really seen. However, as the game starts I was just about to give a slight (slight) graphical edge to the Snes version. Then I saw the roaring fire which looks like something you might see on a Neo Geo AES cart...that slight edge the Snes held flew right out of the window.
The Mode 7 on the roller-coaster track was neat but knowing what I know about the Genesis port...it needs to do better than that. Every last level on Sega's 16-bit machine has incredible technical feats in them and the same cannot be said for the Snes. So with that in mind, the Sega Genesis beats the Snes in graphical fidelity. The Snes does strike back with better sound but it's close. What pulls Snes over the Genesis in sound is the real orchestral instruments and hearing that old Batman theme from the first two films in the 1990's.
