  • Mick Hughes-live engineer for the Led Zeppelin reunion tour-described Jimmy Page's Orange AD30 twin-channel amplifier head as "the loudest 30 watts I have ever heard!" That's not the only thing about the Orange AD30 that appears to defy physics. There are a lot of 2-channel tube amplifiers out there, but you'd be hard-pressed to find an amp that sounds as different from one channel to the next as the AD30. That's because the AD30 is more like two completely separate amplifiers in one than a single amplifier with two tones. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, we thought we'd showcase just what makes this classic amp so good. Nick Jennison tells us more.

    Best amp demo from a media account ever. EVER. You explored all the use cases of the amp, and all the sounds I wanted to know about. Great job.

    I’ve been gigging this amp over last 5-6 years and I can’t fault it. This was my first EL84 valve amp. Safe to say I’m a happy camper.

      There is a notable fluttering when some chords ring out in some of the demos. How do you relate to this detail when using the amp? It confuses me a little.

      @@rpbrear right in the official demo, the chord he's playing at 4 seconds in is strongly fluttering dynamically. It's a matter of taste and tuning, personally I feel it might drive me nuts in some situations. Of course, it'll depend on the exact settings, too, I guess. • @user-fb8yb8so8n
    @user-fb8yb8so8n 2 года назад

    I never understood why they only sell the twin channel version of the AD30 now. Unless I'm mistaken, you can't switch channels via footswitch so you have to flick the switch on the amp. I would much prefer reverb to a second channel, seems almost pointless. Still a great amp.

    • @mtmusicgear

      Footswitch to toggle between channels is on the back of the amp. Super handy!

      @@user-fb8yb8so8n yea, but in a live situation, it doesn’t really matter as you’d likely only use the foot switch, the Orange branded ones have LED indicator.

    • @user-fb8yb8so8n
      @user-fb8yb8so8n 2 года назад

      @@jonahparsons2965 thanks for the explanation. I just kind of hate that for whatever reason. I have a million overdrives, boosters, fuzz, distortions so why do I need an amp to act like it has a subtle boost pedal? I mean, I get it but I don't.

    • @jonahparsons2965
      @jonahparsons2965 2 года назад +1

      @@user-fb8yb8so8n I don’t think that it was intended necessarily to be a boost although it can be. I like to run my eq’s quite differently On rhythm and solo channels. Typically I boost the volume, highs, and cut the lows and mids depending on the amp for my solo channel. This amp is really supposed to be modeled after a vintage amp. A lot of people complain that it doesn’t have a lot of the features that the rocker verb does, but it’s not supposed to. Every component you add to a signal chain changes the sound of an amp. This is a straightforward class A Amp, and it’s probably my favorite British amp. The sound of those power tubes cooking is worth the price of admission as far as I’m concerned. I look at the channel switching feature like a light in a stairway, typically there’s a switch at the top and the bottom of the stairs.
