that nite he played my C3 and my 770 leslie,i made that piece of wood for him and attached it to the start switch with a piece of wire.he loved it and since then he took it along to all the other gigs. in that nite i turned 50 and it was the best birthday party, one can ever wish to have.
"Doc" is one of the coolest musicians we've had the honor to meet. We spent the evening with him in NYC on Sept. 18, 2007. He was teasing everyone and kept us all laughing to the very end. He teased my grandfather about his gray hair, and my grandfather teased him about what must be hidden under that "hat" he's always wearing! Doc is REALLY a nice guy, and I hope I get to spend time with him again someday. What an extraordinary gentleman!
A lovely man...a joker...my favourite player. I worked with this band for two nights when they rented my B3 and Leslies. (except the drummer was Japanese or Japanese American) One of the best gigs I've witnessed. Will be sadly missed. Sleep well Lonnie.
When you hear this B-3 stuff cookin' & on fire just listening to the recording, you'd think they wouldn't be nearly so casual as when you see them live. I think only Keith Emerson has ever really broken a sweat. Lonnie's playing is simply amazin/jawdroppin
I spent almost a year playing with Lonnie and the drummer is Danny Burger we had a blues band together.Every Wed. night we would fill the house at O'Haras on Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. There hasn't been anything that good that I can remember. They are the greatest.Someday we will reunite. Jamie King Colton
Being a drummer and a Lonnie Liston Smith fan since the 70s , I also can''t help noticing the drummer really getting into this groove....! Great music by hugely talented people....
mann always loved this instrument its just absolutely amazing. The amount of different sounds you can generate with it are truly astounding. And man does this guy have a talent to make it sound good. I am sitting here bobbing my head up and down as I type this, man does this guy have some talent!!!!!!
Never mind the turban and the showmanship - for me, in years to come, Lonnie will always be remembered for being funky, but also being able to bleed life out of every single note in a tune. Few other electric keyboards can afford this type of feeling and expression than the B3, and nobody exploits it better than Dr Smith.
I dug threw my basement and found the lp. It was 'Babbitts other song'+ 'Funk reaction' both Instrumental jams! (1977) and produced by Sonny Lester. Thank and sorry so much space used.
Love the way he sustains that top 'C'!!! I saw Lonnie on the QE2 at one of our jazz festivals and he was amazing. I would like to see more of his pedal technique which is, at times, astonishing.
I saw the Dr. & his trio this past Sunday in Chicago at the Jazz Showcase. And who should stroll in but Joey Defrancesco. Too bad he didn't join the Dr. to jam.
Great! At 1:50 when he gets down on the floor to play the foot pedals with his hands...the other musicians start looking a little worried. Too funny, what a great player.
Whoever thinks jazz is all slow and boring really is not in the know. The way he's sort of vibrating the notes back and forth there around 1:30 is similar to the technique I use, I really appreciate the use here.
@TwoLevelBeats . Thanks everybody for all your help! I started using a bent piece of cardboard, and that works. But, when he pulls it out at 1:30 it looks like a bigger version of the peg on acoustic guitars. Thought maybe it was a standard thing. Thanks again!
I had an LP by him in the late 70's ( I think it was him) The song was a really cool instrumental called 'Babits other song' I would love to hear it! does anyone remember this?? red or orange lp cover with man in turban. thanks
This shit is unbelieveble!!! DAMN!! 2 hot!! original solo with tong-trics!! whoo-hoo it tickles my balls! i love this Doctor! Respect 2 Lonnie & Mcgriff!
@gnrfanatic141414 He puts a little bit of cardboard between the notes to jam a key down, so that he can play chords with both hands on the bottom keyboard whilst that note is still playing.
I am reading Dr. Lonnie Smith's book "How to play the Hammond B3 with your nose without dropping your turban" now. I can't really play organ much, but I thought I'd start with the important bits.
is it normal that I got shivers? lol I already heard people talking about getting shivers, but this might be the actually first time I actually had them... I got them at 2:19 about...

That drummer is delivering those beats!!
Oh man, you're so right!

Holly Sikh you mean...
I used to play drums with this man and he's a force of nature. And lots of fun!
When you hear this B-3 stuff cookin' & on fire just listening to the recording, you'd think they wouldn't be nearly so casual as when you see them live. I think only Keith Emerson has ever really broken a sweat. Lonnie's playing is simply amazin/jawdroppin
Yes, it sure was one of the greats at Hammond 3

Doc Lonnie and his band are really something else!
The transition from the drum solo back into the song is way to smooth.
what a BEAST. playing the pedals with his hands.. classic Lonnie...
Never mind the turban and the showmanship - for me, in years to come, Lonnie will always be remembered for being funky, but also being able to bleed life out of every single note in a tune. I dug threw my basement and found the lp. It was 'Babbitts other song'+ 'Funk reaction' both Instrumental jams! (1977) and produced by Sonny Lester. Thank and sorry so much space used.

Great! At 1:50 when he gets down on the floor to play the foot pedals with his hands...the other musicians start looking a little worried.

Cool he stuck a ring thing into a key hole! Creative!
@wolfmanhammond I've said it's a piece of cardboard elsewhere, thanks for clearing that up because there has been a lot of discussion.

@kax61 Lonnie is playing the bass lines on his pedals, as he always has done. That's an electric guitar there with him.

I heard him play live very recently, and in his own words, Dr. Lonnie Smith wears a turban to every show "for no particular reason."
R.I.P. Dr. Smith...
goddamn genius
What did he find under the organ.........funky
@gnrfanatic141414 He puts a little bit of cardboard between the notes to jam a key down, so that he can play chords with both hands on the bottom keyboard whilst that note is still playing.
