Thank you for you tutorials and interviews! Been trying to add color to buttons on novation launchkey mini, but resolum unfortunately only gives color options for Akai. Hie Mr,. Bowes, It seems like you are the Master of Resolume in RUclips :) a quick question from an absolute beginner; Don't you happen to have a tutorial that shows how to control a "triangle display" in the shape of a DJ table?
I don’t have one yet, but you can either use a mask, or a polygon slice to achieve a triangular output area. Try those and see what works best for you. I will add that to my list of video ideas! Check out my advanced output LED mapping video for a lesson about slices and masks and modify those techniques for a triangle
Do you have a video with the stream deck? Resolume is getting more popular in corporate shows. So would like to map the stream deck to different presenters, logos, videos, etc

HI Sean: Im looking for a portable Midi controller to use with resolume... looking at nano KOntrol studio vs akai apc mini vs Native instrument Kontrol F1: which is best for versatility and functionality / ease to set up?
Check out my Best Midi Controller video, I talk a little bit about each one of these controllers. All great options. APC Mini is super easy to start using with Resolume, but may be limiting because it doesnt have knobs. Nano Kontrol is also great, lots of VJs like it for its portability, but it is very small which can be tough for some people and vj styles. The F1 is becoming very popular, very durable, good variety, and a good size. Most people I know end up using 2 or 3 and love them. It can be slightly confusing to set up at first, it has a setup software that you use to program the details of the buttons, but it shouldnt be too difficult to work with and is a fantastic option. I would probably rank the F1 at the top because of its versatility and durability over the other two. But all great options!
hi Sean... thanks for your reply... what about the akai LPD8 + akai apc mini together? can the akai apc mini record video loops whilst playing into resolume?
I have a crawling text in video and I would like to map the crawling text round a corner of box. It can't be so difficult but I can't figure it out. ? Do you have a an idea? tx!!
Are you trying to map it around the corner of two faces of a 3D Cube Box, or are you trying to curve the text around a corner of the edge of a square shaped screen?
@@SeanBowes hello and good eventing. I was trying to map the text with only one source. I used with 2 slices and 2 masks. It did bot work. The result was 2 identical sides. But no text crawling round the corner:) i think it’s better I send you a picture of What I was doing. Gr.
Hey Sean, still running 5😂 Just bought a launch control xl. When mapping knobs, some how another knob gets ghost added to the same function. I’ve cleared out the whole thing and started over again and it’s still mapped on two knobs.. Any idea how to correct this Issue?
Is it a brand new controller or pre-owned? Do you see the same midi note and channel value coming from both of the knobs or are they different? Try to narrow down if its an issue of overlapping midi messages, or if there is a hardware issue of some kind. You may be able to use Novation Components web software to change the midi message of that knob to make sure they are different and see if that fixes the issue.
yeah! simply map two things to the same knob. For more control, use envelopes on the parameters to control their ranges and even invert their influence (so one could go up while the other goes down for example) I have a video about the basics of envelopes that might help if you aren't familiar with those.
Unfortunately I’m not sure how to do that or if it’s even possible. I have noticed they are a bit dimmer on the mini series though also. If I come across a way I will let you know!
Thanks for these helpful tutorials! For the Touch OSC IOS apps, do you have a recommendation on which to purchase? The TouchOSC for $10.99 or the TouchOSC MK1 for $4.99?
The 10.99 version is the latest update. The 4.99 MK1 version is the original version that they stopped updating a couple years ago. Either will work, I believe I am demoing with MK1, but if you want the latest features and to get updates, go with the 10.99 version.
hey question, So I'm using the same MIDI as you on a mac. On your screen it has a box for Mode and on, off. On my screen it only has Target, input, output, channel and note. On the bottom is has MIDI out velocity, and then a selection n for Status: empty and velocity: (all the color options) how do I my screen to look like yours with the Mode / on, off box? Thanks so much!
These options change depending on what element of resolume you are mapping. A Clip slots status can be empty, disconnected, previewing, connected, etc. Effect bypass switches can only be On or Off. I am mapping an effect bypass in the example, and it seems like you are mapping a clip slot.
Hey Sean. I’m new to Resolume. I’m really interested in running this program with my midi controller. I happen to own the Akai MKII and would love more info on how to run a show using this method. Thnx for your help and support.
@@SeanBowes Just got my own MKII recently so for me personally, I would love to see more detailed MIDI layout tutorial. With my first composition I had put together I felt like I put way to many effects on it and put nothing on my layers which I'm now seeing as an issue because I don't want to control all the layers with the effects. Now I'm trying to see what effects I can set on the layers and what to keep on the whole composition. Another thing is clip layout and how to structure your deck for sets. Going to try and bring the set up to some rv camping gigs this summer and feel like the way I organize my clips on each layer doesn't flow the way it should. Given I have only had this MIDI for about a month and very new to this still these were some of the issues I have been running into in my short journey so far. Thanks for all the content you put out!! Guided me to make this decision to pursue Vjing and very happy I did.
There's definitely some trial and error involved, and it varies based on your style and the type of show you are playing. but i will keep that in mind! i have some plans for videos that show some different options and strategies to help you figure stuff like that out. For the effects - Groups are another great way to split things up beyond Layer and Composition if you havent explored those yet.
Will for sure have to try that out and start breaking it down a bit and will be looking forward to some more videos coming out. Thanks for the feedback

hello, thank you very much for your lessons, it's helpfull !! :) i have a question... i have a APC40mk2, when i map an effect in the dashboard on layer 1 and another effect on layer 2, they are activated both by the controller... i want that the APC controller change the control of each layer separately when is selected... is there a solution for that ? (hope you understood me :) thank you very much ;)
In your shortcut settings, try changing the Target mode to Selected Layer for both of them. That way it only has an effect when that specific layer is selected. Its set to By Postion by default.
your shortcuts panel might be too small? try dragging the edge to make it larger. also it needs to be a button on your controller that you are mapping to a toggle type of interface element, like the bypass on an effect, or it may not be an option. If you want that behavior on a clip, its a clip trigger mode not a midi mapping option.
Other common issues: overheating - check your fan speed is high and your cpu and gpu aren’t overheating Stressed vram or cpu - View > Show hardware stats to see if any stats spike before the crash Non- DXV3 clips. Especially h.264 mp4 files that you are adjusting the speed on or playing backwards Heavy effects / wire effects that are unstable
Look up my LED Mapping and Slice transform videos. Those might help. There are also some great videos out there about projection mapping that might help you
"Piano"? Is that just a momentary key or is there actually something "piano" about it? Maybe your explanation is too basic and maybe it actually acts like a piano key? Hit it harder, get different results? If not then that is a terrible label for that function.
Some things are also velocity sensitive if your midi controller supports it. piano mode appears in midi settings of some parameters and means momentary trigger. If you were trying it on a clip, its a Clip Trigger Style rather than a midi setting. Right Click a clip, Trigger Style, Piano. Can also be set for multiple clips via Clip menu, or set a default behavior across the whole composition from Composition menu, Clip Trigger Style.
@@SeanBowes Yep, nope I was wrong. Was confused as to where Piano was. Still think Piano is an odd label for that. Adding "Piano" to "Toggle" if it is just momentary and doesn't have any piano functionality why not call it "Momentary"? Was really hoping to use pad pressure on my controller to control levels but it doesn't seem to be able to use any after touch information.
@@SeanBowes What I was hoping to do was map my midi pad to Opacity (just as an example) and be able to use pressure on the pad to control the levels of opacity in real time. Using Akai MPD226 and I can see the pressure change info in the Midi Monitor read out but I can't figure out how to get that to control anything. It seems to only work on initial velocity, no after touch. If that's the way it is, that's fine, I'm just pusing buttons and figuring out what/where the limitations are.
