  • Sorry for the bad side-camera quality, I hope I make it up to you by playing the keyboard with my nose.
    The Chip Maestro is an interesting little gadget that lets you play your NES's sound chip like a synthesizer. I can do an in-depth review if anyone is interested because it's got some issues.

    I'm struggling to express how awesome this is! Bizarrely, this makes me feel more nostalgic than actually playing and listening to my NES. I think you capture everything that was great about the NES music but present it in a way that make you feel like you're listening to the NES tunes for the first time again but with all the comfort of something warm and familiar.

      Hey! It's definitely a neat piece of gear to fiddle around with and it's fairly versatile. It has some annoying limitations, but I don't know if they're a result of the Chip Maestro itself or the NES hardware. I wish the parameters could be controlled by MIDI CC instead of the keys in the lower octave, but one nice thing is that you can control the volume of each individual channel with CC #7 (That's how I created the drums, the snare and hi-hat are noise channel fading out very quickly). However, using a pitch bend on one channel will apply to all channels simultaneously, so that's pretty annoying. A huge and infamous drawback is that certain Cs are out of tune with other Cs an octave higher or lower, and even out of tune with other channels. I'm pretty sure I played this tune in B major to try to avoid Cs as much as possible, though I'd love to know if they fixed this issue with later models because I bought mine 4-5 years ago. Either way, cool cartridge. Thanks for the comment!

    I'm a huge fan of NES music (my vids prove that). This video of yours was awesome! Very catchy original tune i'd never heard before, but the fact that it was used with only NES sounds made it feel immediately familiar to me and almost nostalgic on the first listen. EXCELLENT!

    I assume this device only allows you to use the programmable sound generator function of the console and doesn't let you load up your own samples, right? It'd be amusing if someone made a chip maestro keytar that played the sunsoft bassline.

    • @beeble9285
      @beeble9285  3 года назад

      Yeah, it gives you control over the pulse, triangle, and noise channels but not the PCM channel. I think one of the other similar products work with samples though, maybe MIDINes?

      I'm two months late, hope that's ok. I used the red RCA audio output jack on the side of the NES to capture the audio, made it super easy. (You can see the cable in the overhead shot) My signal flow was:FL Studio MIDI Output>USB MIDI Adapter>Chip Maestro MIDI Input>NES RCA Audio Output>USB Audio Interface Input>FL Studio Audio Input

      And that's exactly why I bought it, and what I did in the video (besides drums). it's definitely a neat toy to tinker with. Maybe I was a little harsh about it at the end of the video, but I tried multiple midi configurations and still had some issues with notes getting stuck on or everything sounding glitchy. I've used MGB for the gameboy and it's a lot more reliable with midi, but the Chip Maestro has a few extra features that MGB lacks, win some lose some I suppose.
