Thank you so much my 78 yr old mother Literally Just bought this cobalt sawAnd brought it for me to put together. I have put chains on before but but I couldn't get the chain to move luv I totally forgot about the safety on the chainsaw I was getting pretty upset with myself and your video was the 1st one I found and it was perfect so thank you so very much and keep up the videos. Patty from Oxford, Ohio.
Been going back and forth about getting this to add to my ever growing Kobalt collection but considering the sales at Lowe's now for $129 including the battery and, after watching this, I'm convinced. Thanks pal.
I love my Kobalt 80-volt brushless 18" chainsaw with a 5-ah battery. - - I have (2) Kobalt 80-volt 18" Bar Chainsaws and use (2) 5 AH Batteries. Using it on a Southeast LA farm of 18 acres of tall large pine trees that was devastated by a Hurricane with a tornado. most of 10 acres nearly all down. The chainsaw has. been working great even cutting huge logs and trees up to 20"+ logs and it works like a great. And NO more pulling and pulling to start a gas-powered chainsaw. My first 80-volt 18" Bar Chain saw with a 5-AH Battery and charger was $400 in Jul 2021 and just this year bought the second one.
Just got this saw today to deal with fallen limbs from an ice storm. I'm new to chainsaws, and your entire demonstration has been invaluable to me! Thanks! I will be using this saw tomorrow, so wish me luck.
Thank you for the demo. I was just about to throw mine in the trash! I couldn’t get the chain tightened. You showed me what I was doing wrong and everything works perfectly now!
thank you so much for explaining everything in detail I know nothing about chainsaws but I'm headed to Lowe's to get this one today and I had no idea I would have to put the chain on or put the oil in myself. I have lots of invasive mimosa trees I need to keep cut down thank you for a wonderful video!!!!
Thanks much! Great video, just purchased this over the weekend and it is my first saw. Using for minor things so didn't need a massive one, ur vid helped me to figure out a few things that were not obvious in the manual
I just bought mine today. Thanks for your informative video. If I get stuck during the assembly, I'll refer to your video again. I'll be using it to mainly prune my trees. I also want to reduce the height of my peach tree so I won't need a ladder to harvest the fruit that's too high for me to reach! Trolls be damned! 😝
Thanks man! Just looked at this as I wanted something to deal with brush easily....as I am OLD, and this saw was on sale. Gonna get it, after seeing your vid. "Old guys are old for a reason. We watch RUclips videos BEFORE trying anything." 😎
Absolutely fabulous step by step tutorial! I had tried to follow the vague instructions & tiny diagrams by reading the minuscule fonts in the manual but I was concerned about the chain placement. I found your video with a quick google search & sure enough the chain was on backwards & I had not tightened it well enough. Kudos for a well put together & clear video for a 65 yo woman with her first chainsaw! PS- tell Kobalt to make the chain directional markings visible to the naked eye. For the life of me I could not find them & I could not make out the direction it should go using the diagram. No funny jokes from me but thanks again for an excellent video!
soo glad I found your video- I did not get instructions & the kobalt website manual left out many steps on putting on the chain & how & why to adjust the bar1st then the order to tighten knobs and how to asses it all---. None of the other sites i looked at included all the steps. Thank you thank you thank you:)
I own a big gas chainsaw, and I'm scared to death of it. I think it's GREAT that Lowe's makes a chainsaw for little old ladies with acreage, and that someone is nice enough to teach me how to use it. THANK YOU.
Are you still having great success with it? I just purchased one yesterday at Lowes. I need to cut my firewood shorter, and wasn't sure which chainsaw to get. An associate was helpful, and said a lot of people have said they liked the Kobalt. I followed your step by step, and was able to put it together, and went out and cut some wood shorter. Works great.
@@lumberhacks3528 Yes. I just purchased an Oregon chain. I watched another video, and they had upgraded to an Oregon. They felt the Oregon worked better than the chain that came with it. Mine is leaking, and the cover keeps on coming loose, and then I have to tighten the chain which is annoying.
hey buddy i got one i like it question though does your saw leak a little chain oil on the bottom ? book says its normal but it still bothers me . thanks man i am subscribing.
I just unboxed mine & put it together. I added the oil as instructed in the manual to fill to cover the plastic window. Then I tested it. Evidently, like yours mine is leaking oil from the bottom after use. It bothers me too as it's making a huge mess. Hopefully someone here gives some guidance on this "common?" issue. Edit: Since I just bought this Chainsaw I have decided to Return/Exchange the one I got. Perhaps it's defective. I'm gonna see if a second Chainsaw will be better. If the second Chainsaw has the same oil leak problem then I'll contact Kobalt to see what their Warranty folks have to say.
@@mightybuffoon mine isnt leaking so bad that im gonna take it back ill just dedicate a rag or newspaper to put it on. Thanks for your reply i dont like for anything to leak . Have a great day
I will have to check... But mine doesn't "leak"... Although my full size gas powered does... Also... After using it is common for the chain oil to continue to drip from the chain and out of the feed tube. All in all I think your okay. Just be sure to keep it topped off when your using it.
Do you drain the bar oil after each use, and do you fill the reservoir all the way up to the line when you use it? I made the mistake of leaving the bar oil after I used it .. and it’s been non stop leaking. I guess I should probably drain it but do you reuse the oil? I’d hate to waste it. Do you just flip it over to drain? Can I add just a little bit instead of all the way full so I don’t have to drain so much at a time?
No I don't drain it... But I should lol. All of my chainsaws leak out their bar oil so I'm kind of used to it. But you can absolutely tip it over and dump it out. You can also use less and run it. Just keep an eye on it it keeps things lubricated and running smoothly and keeps your bar and chain cool. But you're not going to destroy it by running out once in a while. Thanks for watching
Merci. Une trentaine secondes me suffisent maintenant pour replacer une lame sur ma Kobalt électrique. Avant votre vidéo, je n'ai pas réussi à l'installer.
Yeah I might have an issue. Also like Blue A LOT lol. But I really do like their tools and have had great success with them. For the price you could it can't be beat. They are slowly expanding this 24-volt line. They've still got some catching up to do but they're finally coming out with a nailer which everyone is excited for. As far as hand tools go they are as good as any.
Great review! Since I'm already in the 24v kobolt family, I think I'll get one. I currently have the Atlas 40v chainsaw. Been looking at getting a 2nd one for some time now.
mine is a 40v 12" Kobalt. it is locked up so much I can't turn any knob. Someone threw out my box with my instruction book and receipt. It's only been used twice since I bought it. There doesn't appear to have any oil in it now. Could that be why it's locked up?
Not sure if they advertised this kit as coming with a quick charger or if you just had a slip, but that appears to be the standard compact (45-watt) charger. The quick charger is a 110-watt unit and is about twice as wide as the one shown here. And that's a bummer, because the compact unit really does take forever to juice a battery to 100%. Excellent video though, i have been thinking about picking one up but just can't get over the tiny little bar...maybe i should reconsider.
It was so long ago that I can't remember what the tags said. So I have to take the blame on this one! You are correct it is the standard charger. I have about 3 of each charger so I must have just got them confused. Not sure how considering the size difference lol. As for the saw I still really like it for what it is. I just used it to clean up the creek bank after a flood and it was light and quiet perfect for a damp hillside. Thanks for watching
Hi. I hope you check your messages periodically. I am trying to get my new chainsaw to work. I did exactly what you showed us and the chain only moves for a split second and won't move again until I pull the trigger, then it just moves a split second. Is the chain too tight? I have tried it many times, taken it apart and redid it and it keeps doing the same thing. What am I doing wrong? The battery is fully charged. Help!!!!
All is good. I intend to keep the content coming but I've got to get my space sorted again. I need to get some energy back somehow and push myself to get out there and do more.
@@lumberhacks3528 Hopefully u post more content. I also need to sort my shop out also. Becomes a catch all junk space. Just put some cabinets up and getting my area done little by little. Time to do it is why I'm not done yet
That's unfortunate. It helps to loosen the big knob and then tighten the small chain tensioner and then tighten it back up. It's not the best tensioning system ever. I would prefer a screw type rather than the turning wheel. But it's not bad for what I use it for.
People, please dont shop at Toys R Us for this. The examples shown are twigs and wet rotten branches. Save your $$ and stick with real gas powered for this type of tool.
I still use this saw to cut 8" - 10" branches to length for my chiminea. It obviously doesn't hold a candle to my 24" Echo but its a toll with a purpose. It works great for what I use it for. As well as limbing and cleaning up saplings off the property without having to lug a gas can around. You have to keep in mind some people are unable to wield a gar powered saw or just need something to prim a couple trees twice a year.

I need to replace the chain. I thought it was as simple as purchasing a Oregon 12" and it is too small. What kind of Chain do I need to buy?
I'm gonna have to look into this... Because it should be that simple.
Awesome Hack…getting mine now…thanks
Good review my man, this was helpful.

Most likely not. The oil just lubricates the chain. Id try and get a hold of Kobalt customer service and see if they can make it right. Good luck.
Nice
How has it held up?
Good still running strong. I will need to get the chain sharpened or replaced with a better quality soon

Never mind, I figured it out. Can't wait to try it.
Does it come with the 40W or 100W charger?
45w charger. I was incorrect in thinking it was the quick charger.
Can I use engine oil?
I've done it in a pinch with my gas saws but engine oil isn't as thick so it's a little messier and runs out quick.
Mines not cutting, any suggestions? Put new chain on it
Check to make sure the chain is on the right direction it only goes on one way. other than that I'm not sure unless the chain was just poor quality.

Where to find a replacement chain?
Search item 2423633 on Lowes.com for Kobalt replacement chain.
You can replace it with any 12-inch chainsaw chain it's a standard.
