Excellent review. You should consider cutting together a video for each individual charger and upload them to amazon reviews (and pop in a link to your full review videos on youtube). Should help you educate more buyers, while also attracting more traffic to your youtube channel. Keep 'em coming! Cheers!

This is so thorough. Super impressive review. I look forward to seeing solar panels increase in efficiency and power output in the future.
One thing I'd like to note however, is that the RAVPower charger is not available in the UK. However, something called the VINSIC charger is. It seems to have almost the same design as the RAVPower, but with an extra panel, and is rated for 22W. Is it the same company building these?

Good that you made an annotation at the start of the video that the conclusion can be found at 19:00, otherwise you had lost me as a viewer. Although I really appreciate your effort and explaining everything exhaustively. I must admit that I do prefer the shorter video's of some other electronics bloggers. This is only my personal preference, not a negative comment on the content you produce. Maybe in the future you can consider making this a three part setup: the in depth reviews in part one and two and a separate third "jump to the conclusion" part for the people with less time on their hands. In that case, I would watch more videos you make: always the "conclusion" ones, an then occasionally an in-depth one if I wanted more info or clarification. Anyhow, keep up the good work! Goed werk!

Eeeeexxxceeeeeeeleeennttt review. This is the type of real honest advised I was looking, searching, hunting for it. I do know now for sure the correct solar usb charge to buy. I was unsure between the Anker and the Ravpower but with you CLEAR statement about the Choteck now I will get first the Ravpower then second the Choteck knowing they are similar in power (not as advertised) and that information level the game for all. Thanks, thanks, thank you so much for your time and effort to make these test. Liked, Subscribed and bell notified.

Great review! Would you consider doing an updated review considering that many of the solar panel vendors like SunKingdom and RavPower are now using the supposedly superior Sunpower panels? Also I think many would be interested in the new solar panel product reviews like the SolarTab and the Solar Paper from Yolk.

Different result with RAVPower result. While charging my DIY battery pack, the panel produced 5.35V at 1.9 - 2.2A from one of the port. I've been using this panel about 2 years now which hasn't failed me below 10W from just one port. Perhaps, the company upgraded the system after watching your video :) Still very interesting and helpful! Thank you for the video

Excellent review. Very helpful and a needed reality check. My own testing of Sunkingdom's 6.5 watt panel has only seen just under 5w at peak. Not close to the marketed 6.5W. The good news on the Subkingdom panel is it has been charging my cell phone, but I charge the phone not from the panel, but as you recommend, charging a separate battery pack. Keep up your really great work as it helps.

Thanks for the thorough review of the different panels. I got the Ravpower last year summer 2018, it ran fine, I measure Volt and Amp using a USB tester, it does output good amp under a good sunny day.
However lately I found some issue with the built-in voltage converter, I am hearing a clicking noise, initially from one of the port, now both of them have clicking noise. I put a scope on V+ with no-load, I see 5V allright, however as I put my UBS battery pack on one of the port, the amp is very low compare to another panel I have a exact position. I really suspect the dc converter probably gone. It is no very expensive those dc converter, however what suck is to open everything and resolder new one.
I gave a very good review on Amazon after several months usage, I may have to re-edit my review for the Ravpower, I do think like you that some manufacturers exaggerate too much the actual power the panels deliver.
In the same token, USB battery packs also suffer the same fate, I just got a 20000mAh battery that only can hold 5000mAh!!

I'm curious to here about your opinion on longevity between the Ravpower vs Choetech. With real world use and the Ravpower after time getting loads of those bubbles(that I also would think would hinder productivity). Which would you think would stand the test of time better? Also which would you think would hold up better to stress? Great video, I appreciate the time you took to inform on these products. ps What about the Poweradd 40w?

Just as powerbanks are rated not as Wh deliverable, but Ah stored, folding solar panels are almost never rated at Watts deliverable. At best Wp (STC) for the general module rating. Take off your real world (NOCT) heat losses, thats your first loss. Then your DC converter losses (maybe 90%), then whatever usb spec limitation that might kick in. However the 14W unit i tested (Ekeen) was able to deliver 10W at 5V. Which i consider, all things considered, pretty fair.

Best review I've seen! I ordered thru your amazon store. I would like to see two rows added to your spread sheet for total weight and weight per watt. I figured it out on my own with your data. I'd pay more money for lighter weight that performs best wattage output. I would like to see a review of the PowerAdd monocrystalline panels 40watt and 60watt(4.3 lbs) I would also like to see a review of the thin film PowerFilm 30w(1.8lbs) and 60w(3lbs). I'm interested in ideal sun light conditions and lower sun light condition. I think the PowerFilm 30w will win out for me. Two of them can be daisy chained into 60w. Often sun light conditions are lower sun light so this may push me towards a 30 or 60 watt panel if the weight is not too much. Again you have done a great job. For back packing 2lbs is my upper limit. Would not want to go to 3lb but if that is where I have to go for low light conditions I may be open to it.

hey quick question.. love love love love this video by the way, i'm pretty sure all buyers looking for a decent product are tthankful as for this review. I'm weighing up right now between the Bigblue 28w and the Floureon 28w, Bigblue is $150 in AU, and the Floureon is $70-80 AU. Anyways if you have any suggestions maybe i'll be better off just paying for the RavPower 15w. It's such a BS game the Solar market right now, thanks again for your video, i'm sure you;ve saved us all alot of $$, if you have a donation spot or whatever let me know i'll slip ya $10 just for putting this much work into your vids. Very nice test Martin. I am seriously liking solar stuff except that I am living in the wrong country which is Belgium where rain panels would be a fantastic idea. Been playing with 40 and 10 Watt panels that have an approx 17 Volt as ideal output voltage.
I wonder what type of electronics these things you tested have since they must have some kind of circuitry to limit the output to like 5 Volt and to keep MPPT of the panel in mind.

Something is definitely wrong with the Sunkingdom 39W results. The claimed power at 5v is 5x2.1 = 10.5W. So, at 5V, you're comparing a 10.5W (claimed) panel vs 19W (claimed - choetech) panel, and you actually measure 12.93W, so the 10.5W panel outperforms not only itself, but all the rest in the group bigtime... It's 39W at 18V ONLY.
The Current should be relatively stable at both 5v and 18v, and it should be somewhere around 2A. So what exactly happened by the time you measure the testing conditions (12.93W), and when you plugged in the iPhone/iPads, when you already have just below 1A (or only 4.75W at 5V), instead of 2.7A measured before?! 12.93W vs 4.75W? Seeing at the others columns, the test measured power and the iPad loading power is almost the same, but not for Sunkingdom, so... What happened? As you see, the current stays almost equal at both 5V and 18V, in your case just below 1A. And it should be about 2A.
    You measured 12.93W at 5V (2.7A) and 14.6W at 15V (0.98A), and again 4.75W at 5v (0.98A) which sounds definitely wrong.
So my guess is, that you may shaded one of the panel "columns" by accident with a cable or something. Even a shade as thin as a cable shade going over the panels can drastically lower the current produced by.

    • @mjlorton
      @mjlorton  8 лет назад +2

+Deyo Hlebarov That 10.5 W spec is not related to the output of the solar panels, but the spec of the USB voltage regulator. In that regard, the output of the regulator did better than specified...but you can't compare that to another 15 / 19 W panel. The Sunkingdom does not split its panels into a "10.5W" section for the USB and another section of panels for the DC. All the power from all the panels is shared by both the USB and DC output.
The 14.6 W you mention was measured under better irradiance conditions and I noted this in the video. That was the best it ever did..pretty poor for a "39 watt" panel. The 4.75W you mention is the Fast Charge compatibility for an iPad (check the video and spreadsheet again...) that has nothing to do with the power on the solar panels, its a limitation of the USB output not being able to send the correct signal to an iPad to allow it to "Fast Charge" and draw more current.
The Sunkingdom is a poor performer and they make false claims about its actual power rating.

+mjlorton Hi, and thanks for the answer. Despite of the review, I actually bought the 52W 24V version of the solar panel, and I'll use it coupled with a 32Ah Poweradd, which accepts everything between 15-24V DC in, so I think they'd work nice together. I did a small test of the system, but the conditions are very poor, since it's winter, and the solar irradiation seems to be pretty low now in January. What the Sunkingdom 52W managed to do in 2.5 hours, placed flat down on my balcony was to put 13% into the powerbank. And then the sun set :).
I saw you used a similar combination in one of your reviews - the 39W solar with a 150Wh powerbank (mine is rated 118Wh). So how many hours should I expect to fully charge my Poweradd in good summer conditions?

Is Sun Kingdom also selling as King Solar? Interesting about the Anker, like you say their other stuff is usually good! I've got an Anker PowerCore 20100 (20000mAh) power bank. I'm looking for a single 3W-5W solar panel charger to constantly have on top of my rucksack lid, to constantly topup a powerbank, which should later charge iPhone, Radio and AA charger. All the brands you covered in this video are now extinct :) and new ones are on the market. It would be useful to do such a comparison video for 2022.

ChoeTech between the panel and the RAVPower. Wins RAVPower 15w. I was oriented towards the 24-watt ravpower what do you think?

you left out the Levin 13 watt panel. I was in hopes to see the specs you found on that in comparison.. I feel that it outperforms my anker panel and it's half the panels...

I don't think you should be so harsh on the iPad charging. Apple has their own proprietary charging protocol that is not compatible with the USB-IF standard for fast charging. Maybe it's possible to support both on the same port, but I've often seen Apple compatible stuff that won't charge my Android devices because they only support the Apple proprietary garbage.

Really nice video. I've got a question : If I block the other panels (f.e small window) i wouldn't have any power?

*Why you don't tested Suaoki 60W panel?* or even 25W??? It's one of the best.

I have the Anker as well and it's ok. I did, however, purchase the Goal Zero 12004 Nomad 20W Solar Panel. Have not yet tested it thoroughly yet but was wondering if you have seen this one?

This panel can put out close to 100 watts ruclips.net/user/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

Excellent review. Have you tested the solar panel 5 or 5+ from biolite?
I want to build a solar panel with a deep battery cicle to power a laptop and other display. Any advice?
