Hi Al Gina I've commented before on you getting a saw mill and cutting your own lumber for the main house if you are still doing one the money you save on lumber will pay for the mill and all the video hours cutting the lumber if you do get on I would get a good sized one because you would need some good sized lumber if you cut it this year it could be drying out for next year you can buy Lumber Arches for transporting the trees but I think you could make them more videos Regards from Liverpool
@@denis9450your wasting your time trying to give helpful tips as Al never listens nor will he respond to you
@@darrenbartholomew9273 he responded to me this morning so that’s not necessarily true. However, would you be able to respond or read 100’s of thousands of messages per day?
@@denis9450 you can't use self milled lumber to build your own house.. I mean you can but this is what happens.. first maybe you have inspections and that requires stamped lumber. Second you don't have inspections but you go to sell the house and the lender/bank for the buyer requires an inspection and the lumber isn't stamped and they won't process the buyer's loan. Your Third option is to have your lumber processed by a Certified Lumber mill that will stamp it for you. There are a bunch of them in New Hampshire but it costs money and takes time. you can bring logs to them or they come to you. that leaves you with Green wood which has to be kiln dried which takes more time and cost more money. ..... Even if you want to saw your own wood you would still be best kiln drying it so its stable. but you would never be able to stamp it to be certified #2 or Better Stud Grade lumber. ............ Another problem is the species of wood on the farm and its dimensions. Most of his trees are thin and many of them suffer from heart rot. Any rotten trees can't be used to produce lumber but thin trees mean you are only getting a couple boards out of each tree. The problem with thin trees is that the lumber is not as stable as thick trees. Also you are taking much more time to process the same amount of lumber. You have to cut a Square Cant and then if you can you cut the boards from the square cant. That means he is getting 2 maybe 4 boards per tree that hopefully are up to grade to be stamped. .......... your last option is to build your home with commercial lumber but use your own trees for siding which does not need to be stamped. He could do this but then the entire length of the tree has to be wide enough to cut your square cant logs and then mill it into siding boards that are 12 inches wide. Again most of his trees are not that thick and it is the older trees he has problems with core or heart rot.
That is just the beginning of the problem of milling your own wood.
Some people do it.. Some people live in areas with no inspections.
some people say who cares I am never selling the home and if I do I will sell it as is and let the buyer struggle to get the money without the bank backing it. Sell to Cash Only Buyers. That is a risk.
Finally you have to be good enough at milling lumber to do it quick enough that attempting it is a reasonable thing. You have to harvest the Trees, Cut them into Cants, Cut that into stud grade lumber or Siding and then pay someone to kiln dry it.
To mill your own lumber also means buying a Mill of substantial size. A smaller one can do it but you are going to have problems with milling a substantial amount of lumber in a high quality way with a bare minimum way. An LT35 with Hydraulic Loader costs $30,000 new and it is pretty much the cheapest you want to go for a production mill. You could go smaller like I said maybe a LT15 for $10,000 but you're going to need to manually load every log and clamping is manual so you have to jack and set every log level every time you turn it and you're turning it manually which is not easy.
OR you can drive down to Lowes or HomeDepot and fork out the cash and it arrives in a week and you have everything you need.. AND instead of just dealing with 16foot lengths where you have to put in a beam and supports to get a 30 foot wide home.. You can order Engineered I-Beams that stretch the entire width of your home and do that in a day with one helper because I have done that and put down your plywood and you have your first floor laid down in a day on top of your foundation walls.
Time is Money... Effort is Frustration better avoided with Money.
Sometimes you don't cut corners and cause yourself a lot of time and effort and pain.
I hope that helps you better understand some of the considerations of milling your own lumber for your home.
I have been a new home builder and a remodeler working for others and owning my own business ... I also do a lot of other things I got into home building later in life because a friend needed a carpenter and site manager he could trust. I don't know everything but I've done most things.
Personally there isn't enough time in life to mill your own lumber that is probably going to be substandard when you can purchase it and get all you need delivered in a day or maybe a couple weeks when you're talking Trusses and Engineered IJoists and Glue Laminated beams that are laser straight as long as they come from a good supplier.
Makes good videos for someone out in the middle of Alaska... or someone that lives in a real home and is just shooting videos in the woods because viewers want to see you mill your own lumber.. Sure you got time for that maybe maybe not.
Professional carpenter making $75-150 an hour doesn't have time for that because they want the entire house framed in with roofing on the top, windows and doors installed and wrapped in Tyvek in 2 to 3 weeks tops. Thats what we took when we were building houses 2 weeks most of the time.
I know Al isn't doing it in 2 weeks but he hasn't put 100 people in homes.
So there ya go.
Get your answer?
if not I would be happy to reply with any question you have
And I would never talk for Al or put anything in Gina's mouth
But they have talked about the trees on their property when they had the land cleared and a lot of it went into wood chips for the local electric company and they don't have Southern Yellow Pine or Spruce on their property that can be used for standard grade lumber.
The raccoons, squirrels and birds will love those soffit pockets! 😊
How about all of the wasps and hornets?
How about the mice. I'm dealing with that now.
Speaking from experience those wild animal nesting boxes need to be blocked off.
@@mauriceryton Every ridge in the tin is a front door.
@@Maxid1 not if the foam shaped strips for the tin was used as it should have been. But yes you are correct as l bet it was not used.
Al. I made a man lift out of a IBC tote frame that goes on the front of the tractor forks.
Made a tool box that can be moved from one side or another. The biggest struggle was training my wife to operate tractor. I had to weld a chain on to frame so it could be chain to forks. Didn’t want her dumping me out if she was upset with me
I bet that works great. Smart thinking on the chain. ⛓️💥
Most Excellent Idea!
Brutus did his job, alert when things are not right!!!
I now realize how much time the Jamaica Cottage Shop builds saved on the old homestead. Great Job on the shed
Yes the Jamaica cottage builds save a ton of time. All the prep work is done
so glad to know she was the one who alerted you that the fence wasn't working, and not an animal of prey.
Amen🙏🏻
3 things,
1. Why all the trim and soffits ? It's a wood shed
2. Why do you draw a line right across the boards when you use a square as a saw guide ?
3. Why do you lock the dog in the barn overnight, how can he protect the animals ?
1. I had the same question about the soffits. 2. In case the square moves a bit? 3. Probably because there is no fencing that will keep him in the area. Though locking up a LGD at night kind of defeats the purpose of having him.
All good questions. At a guess, the first one would be to deter wasps and wild bees from taking up residence where people will be walking. The second one is probably to do with "measure twice cut once and straight". Some people have problems with unsteady hands. The third one was my question, too. Having a guard dog or a livestock guardian dog and shut them in at night makes no sense to me, other than the fact that Brutus is still a puppy.
@@tardismolewasting your breath asking questions as he never answers nor takes any notice of other people's opinions
I think the soffits will creat an ideal place for birds to nest.
@@darrenbartholomew9273please send the link to your channel, I would love to see what you do.
Great job! Curious on why you put a soffit around the perimeter of the ceiling? I know you have an abundance of wood, but you just added 50-100lbs to the roof and made a huge apartment building for rodents and birds...
... and wasps, hornets 🙁
Aesthetics?
And don't forget when the fire starts you will have to tear it apart to get water on the flames inside.
I had the same thoughts. It was a real overkill.
Good job Brutus! He deserves some extra treats for letting you know about thet cows.
In Australia (the home of rusty corrugated sheeting) we fix roof sheets through the ridges not the valleys as the rain is less likely to rust out fittings where the water will not pool!
yes, but in snow country it's easier to clean the roof if there are no screws on the ridges.
If you’re not careful when screwing the ribs, you can pull the rib down too much and it will “grow” the width of the sheet.
@rupe53 lol so nail it up wrong...
@@d6joe so be careful...the neoprene washer doesn't need to be tight anyways...😉
I am a contractor. Every metal roofing company that I know of in the USA. Requires screws in the flats or you void the warranty also ribs are for expansion and contraction. Screwing in the rib restricts the rib from rising up during expansion.
Gina, the junk pile can be referred to as a “ resource area”. I have one too it comes in handy 😊👍😉
3 structures are planned to be built in that area, plus a high tube greenhouse is planned somewhere nearby the harvest house, I'd build siding walls, 2 1/2 sides ( open nearest woodshed ) by using PVC panels upto rock wall height, then back-fill with gravel and rocks, instead of adding gutters !/
This project is close to his house. I like the design. It looks so sturdy for when the weight of snow hits it! Good job guys!
Gina has grown so much personally. She is such a blessing to you.
Hi Al, Gina,Olivia, Brutus. The wood shed is looking amazing & good to see Gina with the drill in hand.
Good to have a nice day so the roof & suports could finished. Take care happy family.
Reading all the comments about the soffits but Im wondering about flashing under the edge of the metal roof. If you paint the underside of the roof sky blue wasps and such will not build nests there.
?? Where does that piece of wisdom come from?
@margaretfriesen7405 my 84 year old neighbor told me that 15 years ago. I painted my porch ceiling sky blue and have not had a Wasp nest on it since. We used to have them every year before I painted it. She was a wise lady and I learned quickly to listen to her advice.
I've always loved the old homes with the robin's egg blue porch ceilings. I never knew there was a purpose behind it. Thank you.
@@cheriekreusel9453so cool!!

Adding a gutter is a good idea. You could add a IBC tote to catch tthe water for watering the garden of general use water. The make filters to remove the derbies from getting into the tank. If you need to pump the water somewhere you can add a 12 pump. Free water.
I was going to say "more solar panel area"!

Great looking wood shed, Al & Gina. Glad to hear it was easy to get Reba back in the woods. It is also good she got out in the first place, because it made you aware the fence was not charging. Very cute to see the goats following you around.

Hi Al, Hi GIna. That wood shed build looks great! I love watching how nicely you two work together (Relationship Goals!). I was wondering if you’ve considered that the soffits at each end, have now created an ideal nesting space for bees, hornets, birds, etc.? Perhaps you are thinking of filling those space with leftover rockwool to plug them up? I don’t know, I guess I will have to “stay tuned”, right? Until next time!
That wood storage area will come in so handy! And it's awesome that you were able to get the roof on before the rain started! I love watching your videos and get to see what you guys are doing!
Love how you use the pipe clamps. I have some never used them like that, strong building . Good the dog is tall , you can see him in the high grass, Thanks for another great video

Greetings from the Top End, Northern Territory, Australia. We get a tropical monsoon every year so know a bit about rainfall. In circumstances like your woodshed, we wouldn't use guttering but lay a bed of decorative stones under the water fall. You don't seem short of stones!
Have you thought about putting a rain barrel or container off of the end of new wood shed for extra water storage and use
Honestly, Gina, I know everybody, including myself is giving you name ideas for new girl but it seems like you really really really like Reba to go with country so I think that you should just name her Reba. I think it’s super cute.
Al has said that on the Community tab of their RUclips channel they are taking a poll for the name for New Girl. You could poll for Reba there if you wanted to. Have a great day!
Best to do this job on a winding day, don't ask how I know. I would recommend you add the nice bright light under the roof for the long dark winter months.
Or a hat whose brim has a built in light.
Good morning folks things are looking good. It’ll be nice to get the wood under there and keep it dry and less chance of damp materials to burn. I can’t wait to you build the bigger house to live in because Gina is gone. I just absolutely love decorating that house.😂❤❤
You have built a very nice firewood shed. It looks very solid and attractive. The only thing I would have added would be a gutter on the low side to keep all of the runoff from making a muddy floor. You could even capture the water for other uses. While the wood is clean you might want to spray the banding with some waterproofing. Good job!,

Goooooooooooood afternoon, Al, Gina, Olivia and the Lumnah Critters :)
Don't metal roof warranties say you have to put the screws in the ridges?
True
That roof went up pretty quick. I can definitely see the wisdom in pre drilling the individual sheets of metal. Is there any way to actually use the big spiral from cutting the sheet lengthwise for anything? The only possible idea that I have is to wrap it around a plant and the stake that keeps it upright instead of using something else to tie it fast.
Brutus is such a good boy! How long do you think the cow was loose before he raised a ruckus? When will you know if Azalea is pregnant or not? I’m so glad you found a bull to suit your standards. I’m also excited about seeing some more calves on the homestead.
Gina may be able to use the spiral for some decorations or art - maybe some wild earrings! 😊
So sharp an edge I'd put it in a recycle bin somewhere maybe? Have a great day!

God Bless from your Canadian Friend.
Good Morning Al. We’re still in the heat of summer here in North Mississippi. Woke up and it’s 71 at the moment but we are going to be in the 90’s again today.
Gina, I’m guessing while Al uses his compound miter saw in the shop to cut pieces for the wood shop so he can construct it outside you probably clean up the saw dust from the saw you should put a hose from a shop vac to the dust shut to make it less mess to clean up. You mastered those ladders now we noticed. 👍🙏😎😊
I assume you get your firewood from your property. Getting firewood and hauling to the shed would make a nice video!
Here is an idea for the wood shed, add a gutter and downspout and connect it to a rainwater collection system! Why? 1) it will help control erosion around the wood shed. 2) having extra water that you save from all the rain that you get, you can then use to water the animals, garden, flowers Gina will plant around the wood shed 😂😂, and many other uses too! 3) eventually you can even add on to it to save more water. You can even do it for all the other buildings too and then have a filtration system to make the water potable (drinkable) which will supplement the usage from your well. And in case something ever happens to the well or the well pump you have a backup you can use in the meantime until it can get repaired or a new well can get drilled.
They do have the gravity spring fed water hydrants they use to water the animals all year long already. Have a great day.

Hola and greetings from Alicante Spain. I have followed your channel and admired your work from your internet pole barn kit days. You guys are simply amazing!
So my grandfather was a dairy man and his steers were being raised from calves to be covered by his Holstein bulls. He did not have guardian livestock dogs but huge alarm critters- no joke! No barn cats either but three Rat Terriers who not only dealt with rodents but actually could fetch and bring 30 or more milk cows to and from the milking parlor. The steers had their own "cabana" or barn with their own forage and the calves were close to home for supplemental meals.
This is a long winded comment which brings us back to our pal Brutus. Trying to figure out his training regime as it was pretty easy to figure out with Abuelo's Rat Terriers (3) and barn alarm/attack beasts. Seems to me that Brutus is living the life of Riley and enjoying growing up on the farm. He is obedient and responds well to voice commands but could you show him under your training and development? In those cases where I've seen GLD deployed, they were generally nocturnal, slept most of the day and did not have the comforts of locked up barn living. I don't live that good here, beachfront in Playa San Juan!😅😅
The birds will love the finished soffits

Would like to see you fill the soffit pockets with foam to keep insects, birds, squirrels, etc., out of there and making Nests
Your carpentry skills are amazing.
Al, Nice job closing in all of the soffits, Hope I'm wrong, but once the wasps find all of those neat little cubicles, I'm quite sure that they will be happy to have such a nice place for their nests, right next to a source for their nest building and out of the weather.
There's too many people saying this. Knowing Al's personality, that probably means that nothing will be done and they will run the risk of being stung. Do wasps hibernate during the Winter, the time when the wood store will be most used ? Those unnecessary extras will provide protection from the wind and allow the areas to heat up a bit from the heat of the nest. I hope Al decides to remove them, after all, it is only a wood shed. The diagonal bracing is yet to come and might change things. It's all looking a touch too pretty at the moment.
Great building for the wood etc.
But also nice for animals to find it a great house, birds and others...maybe some metal mesh could help?

Hello Gina and Al, tks for video. Very large nice woodshed. Glad you got cow back in. Much love to ya'll......
If you put in a gutter you will need snow rails in case there is ice build up. Sliding ice will rip the gutters right off the roof. No sides or back (with air gaps) to keep snow and rain off the wood? You have the unhoused socket for the fence just hanging loose on the hot wire???
Not electrically connected anymore. Have a good day!
Add gutters and then put a rain collection bin to collect water.
Your Buddy, Jason at "Sow the Land" can give you information and suggestions on what's the best rain barrel set up for your situation 😊
The woodshed looks good Al. During the heavy snows you could hang some tarps on 3 sides to help keep the wood dry and remove it easily for air movement during the summers!
Don't think Al can put sides on shed, cause wood stockpile will loose priority over parking vehicles under !
Awesome job on the wood shed. Keep up the great work.
