For anyone who doesn't know, the DVD includes nearly an hr of extra interviews that probably got cut to make the film a typical movie length run time. But nobody who isn't in the main film already unfortunately. The best bonus of all is a full live performance from the Human tour filmed on 30 Nov 91. None of this is mentioned on the back cover either so it's a cool surprise.

  • @nescaudrummer

In my opinion, I consider Chuck to be a "modern version of a classical composer". Even though heavy metal may not share many similarities with classical music, the composing element in both genres can be quite fascinating, in their own way, nevertheless.
His work is such a passionate one, you see a very clear approach to something more "philosophical", in my opinion. I know that he may not be the best person ever, he certainly had a unique personality and a profound intelligence, as a well a passion for art.
I believe he can be classified as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, despite not being that famous. Either way, being a great composer, doesn't necessarily means being famous, it is more attributed to the person's talent. And that he had a lot. Such a creative mind could bring the most complex and well-thought lyrics in heavy metal, and even music as a genre.
I think he greatly left a great mark in music as a whole. A virtuoso always leaves his talent and gratefulness behind to future generations, that will understand him, be influenced by him, and even be better than him.
My name is John, I'm a beginner musician, and I'm proud to say that Chuck inspires me.

More cocaine please. Death is still ridiculously underrated though. The most original thing about Death is when I heard Chuck mention the phrase "expanding the art form". Clearly he wasn't carelessly along for the ride of some subconscious creativity. All artists in every medium should learn from that phrase. Creatively you can't truly go anywhere unless you know where you're heading.

I do like early death but I never admired Chuck as a person, in death metal the people I admire are the ones who are quite humble and get along well, and there’s also frank mullen...also effigy of the forgotten is a massively more ground breaking album than human.

Chuck seemed like a kind soul to everyone outside the band, but being in a band with him was likely a different world

I totally agree they fucked up for leaving out Murphy and Laroque out. Another thing that would've been cool was how Chuck Billy donated thousands of dollars to Chuck for his medical bills from proceeds of a bay area thrash fest. Billy was sick himself i believe. But what I really wanted to see was a recollection from members of Possessed how big of a fan Chuck was of them. How he hung out with them, studied their riffs and amazed them with his guitar skills prowess. Jeff Becerra has gone on record saying how Chuck and Death made a real name for themselves and deserve all the recognition and accolades. Becerra and Chuck had nothing but good things to say about each other, Schuldiner going so far as to say that Death was not the original death metal band and pointed to Possessed instead. That would've been sick hearing Jeff talk about Chuck as this kid from Florida shredding on the couch.
Now what i totally dug were the shots of old grimey tapes and cover drawings. The old stereos. Nostalgia mannn. At first I was taken aback by the Chuck bashing and then i thought...This is pretty honest, not only about how Chuck was a perfectionist yet became known as very unreliable for tour appearances but when you have Terry admitting he choked on it during the Leprosy recording, it all evens it out. Perhaps that song is about Butler. Or when Rick the boss Rozz admits he was not practicing and knew his firing was inevitable? That just makes this documentary different from other ass-kissing fests and makes for one cool journey back in time.
Now for shit that would've made this doc the doc of all docs. Who was Chuck learning guitar from? I remember reading somewhere he was taking lessons from somebody famous. Also, what about his violin and guitar collections? Could we have seen them please? How about interviews with his metal contemporaries like Max Cavalera, Bill Steer, and Barney Greenway? Or the so called evil side of death metal which he helped spawn or tried to steer clear from like Deicide, Morbid Angel, and Immolation? What do they think?
And what of the tribute bands touring in honor of him or the younger generations of metal bands that are still being inspired across the world by Chuck and Death? Look for renditions of Scream Bloody Gore by kids on youtube and you'll see that album still gets them amped up.

I'm so happy with your review. Really to the point and picking out a lot of holes which should NEVER be in a documentary as far as I'm concerned too. No reason to have a time limit on anything like this. A proper DEATH documentary is needed and frankly I think the two of us should get about it. I can do the filming, editing and you the interviews.
