One of the most underrated groups, and singers, ever. First time I ever heard Lone Justice, I was a big time metal head, but you know this ended up in my record collection, and did not leave my car radio for months.
Don't ever pigeon hole yourself. I grew up listening to radio rock. At the end of elementary school another student a grade up from me turned me on to Venom. Then I discovered A.O.D., Slayer, Nuclear Assault etc. etc. Then my neighbour and his friends turned me on to the Descendents, Dag Nasty, Minor Threat, After high school I started collecting 80s one hit wonders and everthing punk and pop punk from the 70s on up to the 90s. Then my friend turned me on to 60s Soul and garage music. A few years ago I made a list of about 200 funk songs from the 60s to the 90s that I thought were awesome. Now I'm into the power pop. So much good music, it never ends!!!
Took too long to bleach and curl her hair. Maria McKee is absolutely super. What a powerful voice. No, they had to promote Sheryl Crow a singer with a lousy voice.
Mainstream audiences didn't care. The record label put maximum effort behind it, had Tom Petty and Bob Dylan writing songs for them, but people just didn't buy it.
I´M 47 YEARS OLD.AND SUDDENLY I REMEMBER ..LONE JUSTICE!! AND MARIA MCKEE,SO I CANT STOP MY CRY.....REMEMBER THE YEARS THAT NEVER COME BACK!!THANKS FOR THE VIDEO AND THE MEMORIES!!CHEERS FROM MEXICO.
Modena (Italy), 30 May 1987: amazing half-day concert with Lone Justice, Big Audio Dynamite, The Pretenders and U2. Those were the days of great music!
How good is this song?? An more to the point how dynamic is Maria, not to mention that powerful voice as it swoops howls & hollers. One of the best female rock vocals of all time..and though stylistically completely different, the voice is right up there with Joplin in it's passion & abandon
her voice is so STUNNING!!! many many Saturdays during my childhood my mother would be listening ( very loudly) to this album while dancing around the house. when I hear this song I can smell the Lemon Pledge my mom would use to clean the furniture. lol
I saw them on this tour. 1985 United Kingdom, France, Holland, Germany, United States, Canada. I still have the t-shirt. They played the Russell House ballroom on the University of South Carolina Columbia campus (just a few blocks from where my home is now). I had never even heard of them before that night, and being someone who is always looking to discover new music, I went. I'll never forget, they had the crowd fenced about 20 feet away from the stage. Maria walks out and the first thing she said was 'what are y'all doing way back there? Y'all come on up here!' I didn't hestitate and was one of the first ones to make it to the stage. I thought 'this is going to be good', and I was right. I loved every song they played. I swear Maria was wearing the same dress as in the video. Had the same Fender Telecaster. The song I loved the most was You Are the Light. Just Maria singing and playing her Telecaster. After the show everyone was trying to hold hands with her. She missed me, but I wouldn't stop holding up my hand. She saw me and walked all the way back across the stage and held my hand with both of hers and looked right in my eyes. I've been in love with her ever since. After the show, I went to the coolest bar that had live music in 5 points at the time, Rockafellas. Members of Lone Justice showed up. All of them except Maria. I didn't see her anyway. I remember seeing this video playing on their big screen. By how clearly I remember all of this 30 years later should speak something to how good Lone Justice really was, and I've never been easily impressed. So happy I was young during a time when music was made with metal, wood, and natural talented voices.
It's 1985 and I'm driving down the road in San Diego in my 74 Charger, listening to an independent radio station out of Baha California, Mexico and this song comes on. I turn it up, then I turn it up louder, then I'm blaring it, amazed by this voice that sounds like Dolly Parton on steroids. When the DJ said it was a band called Lone Justice I immediately went to the record store and bought the cassette tape. Was lucky enough to see them twice!
That station would be 91X, they had their "blowtorch" in Baja Cali,Mexico because it was cheaper to run it their. That was a great station in San Diego
Yep! 91X. Loved that station. Powerful! Received it clearly in North Orange County California. When the signal was weak, I moved over to KROQ. Great times!
I have memories coming back from my teenage days when I hear Maria’s angelic voice. This is a must have for the serious collector. It’s a shame her and her band weren’t more mainstream back in the 80’s and beyond. Great stuff.
This is as exciting to watch now as it was almost 30 years ago. Love the way Maria's voice swoops and soars & even moreseo once she ditches the guitar then dances & wails with abandon after Ryan Hedgecock's brilliant guitar solo. This song just continually builds to an exciting, rocking good finish. Shoulda been HUUUUUUUUGE!!!!!!!!!
An all-too-familiar story: Their record company hyped their debut album to the point where it could never live up to the pre-release expectations. They, then, tried to reinvent the band with an entirely different sound (and an entirely new back-up band) for their second album. By then , the spark had died, and Maria, reluctantly, broke up the group.
Sounds like a Little Steven guitar solo to me, then I looked it up and he was a writer on the song! Recognized his rhythm guitar style too. He had great stuff in the 80s

I agree Bobby! In fact Tom Petty wrote the song "Ways to be Wicked" for Maria McKee and Lone Justice and the FIRST time I heard it I thought it WAS Stevie's. Lone Justice even opened for U2 and played Farm Aid. The record company didn't know what to do with them. They couldn't really define their "UNIQUE STYLE". I wish they would re-form! if this came out today it would be #1. I heard it on the radio today with no idea who did this or when it was from. I thought it was some retro sounding band and couldn't wait to find out these guys were. Couldn't believe it was an 80's band. Maria McKee has one of the best voices I've ever heard in my life.
I think there were too many people pulling at Maria McKee once the band broke out. A totally different band and direction on the second album really killed the momentum. This song was one of the two or three selections on the second album that were in the same vein as the first. The other songs were dismal... really dismal.
This was actually from their first album. I'd go up against your assertion that the rest of the album is dismal, but that's always pointless. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But, assuming you're talking about the second album, Shelter is a strong contribution. Out of ten songs, there are 2 or 3 I'm just okay with, but the rest are fantastic.
daflotsam I stand corrected on which album this song was on. I only liked the first two songs on "Shelter", the rest of them never saw the light of day anywhere. The second album tanked bigtime and pretty much sealed the fate of the band as far as the record companies were concerned.
Yeah, it's a cut throat industry. I'm guessing it was the execs that pushed the use of a drum machine on this second album, and that the band never would've wanted that. But still to me, the first three tracks plus Wheels and Dixie Storms are the strongest on the album. Either way, I'm real glad Maria stayed strong with her subsequent solo stuff. Many favorites among those.
daflotsam I do like the fact that she never tried to just keep doing the same things over and over and still grew as an artist. She's one of the few performers I will always listen to. Do you remember her cameo in the video for the Robbie Robertson single "Somewhere Down That Lazy River"? If you don't recall it, check it out on youtube. I can't stand the song, but I love the video just because Maria McKee is in it.
This song never fails to bring a smile. Ever her support singers have more talent and presence than most of today's singers. Auto-Tune? We don't need no stinking Auto-Tune! Anybody remember their names - the back-up singers? Somebody posted them a few years ago. I believe they were established artists in their own rights.
I absolutely love this song , this band and their style. Lead singer, she had an incredible voice with an incredible range. I still get chills when I hear this. Amazing bands and music like this doesnt e ist anymore. xo
Useless bit of info about this video-Katie Sagall aka Peg Bundy, is one of the backup singers. Katie was one of Bette Midler's Harlettes, and Maria McKee wrote most of the songs on the Divine Miss M.'s album 'Bette of Roses'. Small world...
James Doherty ....wow!! 30 years on I always wondered who that back up singer was!......Can't believe it was Peg Bundy......haha . Amazing. Thanks James.
Thanks for the info! I knew Katie Sagall was talented, but I would've never known she was the same woman who sat on that ugly couch all day eating bon-bons and making Al Bundy's life more miserable than it already was.
As someone who could never sing, and never learned to play more than a one-note exercise on a musical instrument, I really have to bow in admiration to anyone who can do both.
Last month i went to see 80s tribute band The Molly Ringwalds at House of Blues Orlando and there were a number of 2016 college girls with hair like Maria McKee! It was uncanny!!!
Infamous, can describe her? first heard her voice on a Steve Earle song years ago. come to find she's been on radio through mid 80s. I have her music and when played as around others they're in agreement with you. "Why is she not famous" my reply is "cause she's my little gem" great lyrics, great voice. and carried me through tough times and good times. She's something. thanks Maria.
Still blown away by this song 35 years after first hearing it. Amazing voice, amazing energy, and two choruses, along with rockin' back-up singers makes it such a stand-out. I don't know why this band didn't get more attention. Maria McKee has the most beautiful, sultry, and powerful voice.
One of the most underrated groups, and singers, ever.
First time I ever heard Lone Justice, I was a big time metal head, but you know this ended up in my record collection, and did not leave my car radio for months.

The great Maria McKee!
Same for me. There's so much power and passion here that it hits you harder than some metal will ever do.
One of the great debut albums ever...and Maria McKee...THE VOICE
the face the eyes
Yes!
Lone Justice should have been bigger! How did they slip by so unnoticed? Maria McKee is a super talent!
We listened to them in Southern California. They weren't huge but we loved the album.
Took too long to bleach and curl her hair. Maria McKee is absolutely super. What a powerful voice. No, they had to promote Sheryl Crow a singer with a lousy voice.
It's 2023 and you're still right
Because she wouldn't play ball with record companies

That's the best story. I dance with my daughter too. I have random dance parties. I love them.
I so wanted to be Maria McKee in the 80s. Her voice, her style, her hair. All of it!
I so wanted to be in her, too. All of it!
/wait
Your instincts were correct.
I still do ☺

Did you get a speeding ticket? Lol. What a fab way to discover them. On point!!
So much talent and such great style! I love her hair and her dress, classic and timeless ❤
her voice sends chills through you , What a voice , I remember 1985 so well, I bought this album on cassette when it came out in 1985 I wore it out
Love Maria’s voice so much!
This woman, this song, this performance literally brings tears to my eyes. And I'm a grizzled old fart, too.
Oh Yeeah Maria McKee
All of the above.
I still play Lone Justice! And I'm 54!
Maria is incomparable! That voice! That emotion!
I had forgotten all about Maria's amazing voice. She's just amazing. When she ruled the airwaves.
When Maria hits the high notes on the chorus it still gives me chills.
Yes indeed! 6 years ago and still to this day!
I still listen to them all the time. Saw them in London twice in the 80s. Unforgettable. Such energy and what a voice.
I love watching these Lone Justice videos every few years. They were such a good band. And, of course, Maria McKee is amazing.
Maria McKee grabbed me 30 years ago and has never turned me loose. What an amazing talent.
Well said. :)
you bet
Hahaha Yayeh! Greatness!
And sexy!
Yes! Superb!
I love this song so much in my teens. Thanks bunch brings back so many good memories.
I have memories coming back from my teenage days when I hear Maria’s angelic voice. This is a must have for the serious collector. It’s a shame her and her band weren’t more mainstream back in the 80’s and beyond. Great stuff.
I am a grown man..but i still tear up some when i hear this song..just amazing
Yep. Grown. Bearded. Grizzled salty life. Near 60. Still crying. So beautiful.
Awesome experience. How wonderful for you. I don't know if they toured down under, but I didn't see them. Damn!!
Heard this I the 80s on U68, and only U68 (IN NY). Just searched for it, had to hear it again.. Gotta love RUclips!!!
Must of played this song 5000 times the year it came out.
I LOVE MARIA McKEE! What amazing energy and what a soaring voice!

I agree 1,000 per cent. I freaking LOVED this song from the moment it came out, and still do! Lone Justice should have been HUUUUUUUGE!!! LOL!!

This was THE vocal performance of the year in 1985. Not even nominated. What a joke.
The way she sets it free -- it's eerie. AMAZING singer.
if this song doesn't get you moving well then ...you have problems....what a great voice!!!! Gotta love "peg bundy" singing backup 😊
The best female voice ever.
Best band of the eighties, revisit them several times a year every year since then. Maria is rock and roll gold

OMG what a voice!!! Severly underrated!!
Probably one of the few times that the backing singers are saying "Damn, I wish I was that good".

Thanks RUclips for finally reuniting me with the 30 year lost love of my life. What a cutie pie, what a voice, and what a catchy tune!
This should have been a hit. Great song, production doesn't do it justice. It was great live. Really great band who fell through the cracks.
Great group. First two albums are excellent!
Miss them!
sweet, sweet baby mine....still falling ...thank u for posting.
Yes, they were very underrated. They were one of the best bands around and I love this song 🎵 ❤️. I was so in love this was our song.
always loved this album...maria mckee is so fn talented
Maybe I'm wrong, but this song (released in the 1980s) is what helped to set the stage for what we call Country-Rock today.
This song and band should have been massive ...

only the first album was the original band, they were a shooting star of a band for sure
Wish they would put these hits on Dvd.

Last month i went to see 80s tribute band The Molly Ringwalds at House of Blues Orlando and there were a number of 2016 college girls with hair like Maria McKee! It was uncanny!!!
Chip Drusano I think it's a reaction to long, straight hair being in style for so long.
Good to have a change.
She got a real big voice for such a li'l thang!
I remember the first time l saw Lone Justice, l couldn't decide which was more beautiful, the woman or the voice? Still can't decide.
IKNR - I saw her after Lone Justice broke up. She was the opening act for Neil Young...Amazing!
I saw them open for U2 in '85 they blew me away.
When I first heard her sing I really thought she would dominate music for a long time. What an amazing woman!🤗😍
I remember they opened up for U2 in the 80’s
love them and this song.....
80's MUSIC NEVER DIES !
What a voice and talent! That album 'Lone Justice' was/is so good!
Still blown away by this song 35 years after first hearing it. Amazing voice, amazing energy, and two choruses, along with rockin' back-up singers makes it such a stand-out. I don't know why this band didn't get more attention. Maria McKee has the most beautiful, sultry, and powerful voice.
This song has always made my spirit soar.
