Check out her singing this same song on Ireland's Late Late Show in 1990 and then marvel at the fact that this heaven-sent voice has not lost an iota of its power, richness and soul in 27 years. She is genius this Maria McKee.
@@davidtaylor4975 it was based on an existing song 'Secret Fire', yes, but then she wrote new lyrics to it. We're not talking about 'Secret Fire' here...we're talking about 'Show Me Heaven' which is on this video.
Her voice can not be contained it’s so strong. A lot of today’s singers (Adele, Dua Lipa) could learn a thing or too. All they seem to have is one technique which is to drone. Maria can soar, swoop, trill - it is an instrument of strength & precision.
Honestly if anything adele is the closest thing we get to how all yhe great singers were in the 90s. She may be mainstream pop and all but shes pretty raw.
Start with her vocal talent. Maria’s voice has improved over the years. More range, even better timbre, so expressive with every ounce of emotion right there. And this is live. No band to fill in the musical space, no one at the soundboard covering up less than perfect, no auto tune. Just Maria and a guitar that she has mastered as well. The right hand sweep she uses to shift the tempo near the end alone is just beautiful. But there’s more. She wrote the lyrics in a day or so because she didn’t like the crap the movie studio had. It’s hard enough imagining today’s “stars” singing like this, but writing these wonderful lyrics too? Simply no. No one else like her.
Not only is she not getting any studio trickery help here - the environment is actually working against her, with the really bad guitar mix, the boomy venue, and this recording with is probably just a cell phone pointing vaguely in the right direction - the fact that she still sounds INCREDIBLE is amazing.
I haven’t heard her amazing voice in years but woke up with “Wheels” on my mind and looked her up on RUclips. An incredible talent...she was the soundtrack to my college years. I still remember all of the words to Dixie Storm and my other faves. Her voice is up there with the best of them. Sad that she never got the recognition she deserved but glad she is still using that angel’s voice.
Sonja Austell ah, Wheels and Dixie Storms. Two amazing piano ballads. Wheels is in my top 10 records of all time. Not to mention going back to Soap, Soup and Salvation or forward to Life Is Sweet. And not forgetting Well the dog act / got drunk again last night - ah Panic Beach, the name came to me. I was lucky enough to see Maria twice in London touring her first solo album - mesmerising concerts.
Saw her with Lone Justice in a Frankfurt Club in the 80s. One of the best female stage performances I ever witnessed. Daring, aggressive and basing on pure talent.
She never smoked and always had a clause before smoking bann and after, no smoking in her concerts.. also her voice is getting even better more powerful that’s practice and looking after the vocal chords. Love her, she’s raw.🥰
I was so in love with her voice and the tune too as a teenager. I didn't even know what she looked like and seeing her now... She's as beautiful as her inside and soul. Thank you Maria
I beg your pardon, did you say "real talent grows and deepens?" Really? How truly profound. Thank you for sharing your Hallmark cards' platitudes with us all here.
So thankful for the generosity of RUclips commenters. In complimenting the incomparable voice of Linda Ronstadt, someone identified Ms. McKee as possessing a similarly wonderful voice. Had never heard of her, but that's on me. This was absolutely beautiful.
Desde México y creo que soy el único que escucha a María por aquí pero la amo y es toda Una obra de arte.. Que talento de muger.. La reina del country por siempre.
I love, love, love Maria McKee. I've been trying to get my band BLUES SOUP to do SHELTER for a long, long time. I think they are finally coming around to it.
jeff miller right on! I never seen her solo but lover songs, presence etc.... and of course that powerful or subtle voice. I've always thought she should get the same credit as John Fogerty for creating her own milieu. He was from Ca. yet he created the MI. delta through his songs. Shes from LA and also created a MO/MI life in her songs.
She leaves me breathless.... after more than 30 years of singing still a voice of amazing grace
What a voice! I will be listening to her through 2020. Who's with me?
Check out lone justice live at the ritz 1985. Her performance was incredible
Count me in. Maria is legendary!
I am!
I am 😜👍

This live performance is just totally outstanding!!
What a voice!!!
Pure talent.

Her voice is incredible! One of my favourite songs ever.

Jeff Miller how true very well said
You really got it all right! Amazing!
actually it got better
You got that right!
As good as 1990 was, this is more impressive with age. Simply mesmeric
This is one of those songs you fall in love with instantly. Thank you Maria for your magical voice .
Wow, she's still got it! Surely one of the most beautiful love songs ever written ❤
She didn't write it.
@@davidtaylor4975 actually, Maria McKee is credited with writing it alongside Alan Eric Rackin and Jay Rifkin
@@amorelle111 She changed some of the words after the song was already written!

With all due respect, I would say that Adele has a few good techniques. Other than that I totally agree.
@@gammal586 Adele is a pub singer at best.
@@DerekNewtonKeswick Given the fact Adele has sold over 120 million records world wide, i would say pub singer is delusional 😂

Her voice is a gift from Heaven! It is actually even richer than when she was a young music star in Lone Justice.
Beautiful. She's still got it!

Not many singers can sing this well live 25 years on. Madonna springs to mind at this year's eurovision! Well done Maria you've the voice of an angel

Stunning vocals. I miss her so much. I wish she would put out new music. ❤
Incredible that her voice has not diminished in any way. Like a diamond, totally unblemished by time.
Real talent grows and deepens, and Maria is proof of that. Incredible voice and beautiful artist 💗

Stunning. Perfect in a cathedral setting. Thank you posting it!
What a gift, and how fortunate I am to have listened and watched her as a kid in Los Angeles. Keep singing Maria!
Maria McKee - that there is what you call a SINGER. True musician. I wish she would come back.
