You can edit the options.txt file in “C:\IddSampleDriver\” to add one specifically if they don’t show up automatically for you. Then just reinstall the driver and it will show as an option. For example, 3840, 2160, 240 For 4K 240hz support.
@@MikeTheTech Did this, reinstalled the driver, lost my virtual display, went back to Device Manager and saw that I had two IDDs now, uninstalled one, still not working, uninstalled the other, rebooted, did entire process from start again (including certificate) and still the virtual display doesn't show up now :(
Instead of adding the line at the end (the options file needs a blank line at the end), can you try just editing the refresh rate of the existing resolution line from 60 to the one you want? It could be the issue.
hey i installed the Bat file without first copying that options.txt file. now it doesn't show up in device manager or CMD when typing pnputil /enum-drivers how do i uninstall this so i can try again?
You should not be using Display number or even full Display paths to reference displays. This will change between enabling, disabling, turning on/off, etc. Use Hardware ID instead that you can grab from Device Manager for each monitor.
Just some feedback. This appears to have stopped working with windows update 23H2 22635.2915, I'm on windows insider btw. In the device manager the device has a warning symbol on it and then try to reinstall and I'm getting unable load drivers for the device, code 31. It previously worked fine.
Some Suggestions 1. Playnite Launcher is must have 2. For easy use HDR, on playnite you can setup HDR Support per game, so when you launch a game with HDR support, playnite enables automaticaly HDR Support on windows and when you close the game playnite disables HDR on windows. 3. VirtualAudio Driver (google) to send audio only to the device without sound on main speakers etc and without use steam virtual audio 4. Actual Multiple Monitors app on windows - here you can do all the magic, you can setup monitor profiles and setup them with hotkeys. in my situation , i have 2 monitors and the virtual HDR monitor is the third. - So i have 3 monitors. - i Have 4 Profiles, The main only 1 monitor enabled alt+ctrl+F1, the second one dual monitor alt+ctrl+F1, the third one Virtual Monitor for TV alt+ctrl+F3 and the last one Virtual Monitor for Mobile alt+ctrl+F4. Every profile have settings like resolution hz etc, on my mobile i create a resolution in option file 3216, 1440, 120. for the HotKeys i used vbs coding and converted it to .exe. (if somebody need the .exe files ask in comments) On sunshine i have 2 applications now, one Playnite TV and one Playnite Mobile, when i launch playnite TV i set the sunshine run first the vbs/exe file for Virtual Monitor TV to disable the main monitor and leave only enabled the virtual monitor, audio comes via Virtual Audio driver and when i close the session sunshine runs the vba/exe file for my main monitor to enable again the main and disable the virtual. - You can do Windows Sleep VBS/EXE and add it on Undo Arguments, so when you close the sessions pc sleeps automaticaly - enable weke up PCI on bios to wake the pc from moonlight directly
Works great when it works - what's weird is some games like Cyberpunk work just fine, and RUclips HDR streaming works fine. With the Steam Deck's HDR overlay I can confirm it is hitting 1000 nits. But some games like Tetris Effect, for example, do not recognize HDR as being enabled and just hit the standard ~250-300 nits.
Unfortunately the HDR version does not work for me. I have followed all the steps from the introduction. The files are located under C:\IddSampleDriver. I just did a windows update yesterday (windows 11 version 23H2). and i get the code 31. Previous version worked for me. Does anyone have a solution for this?
What the hell dude. I did what you said in the video, installed the cert, added the .inf to device manager as display adapter, restarted my pc but the IddSampleDriver Device HDR pops up in device manager as a display adapter but it has a Triangle with a exclamation mark and it doesn't pop up in displays tab in settings
Thank you for your great work, I finally managed to get the setup just the way I want it! I did encounter some issues though: - I had to disable my iGPU (7600X) before (re-)installing the driver, otherwise the connection would initiate but then fail after a second. I think there might be an issue with the driver not installing under the desired adapter? - Setting the display in sunshine is not really enough for anything but desktop use. You need to set up some script yourself, so that sunshine makes the virtual display your main display before starting the stream (and ideally switch back afterwards). Otherwise you are not going to see any fullscreen apps. For me nircmd in combination with sunshines "do" and "undo" preparation commands worked well.

I don't see the extend desktop to this display in the system display settings. I have the HDR virtual driver available but I only have duplicate these displays, extend these displays, and show only on 1 or 2 available as options. I'm trying to set this up with NVStreamer1080 so it switches to this second display when a device connects to moonlight. The problem I'm facing is the mouse remains on display one and I can't find it or it reverts back to only using the setting show only on 1 when it switches back.
Not sure how to run dxgi-info and find the \\.\DISPLAY number of the virtual display to give to Sunshine. Also when I duplicate my monitor with the virtual one so I can stream with my monitor off... settings won't stick. I can never stream in 10bit color depth over sunshine.
Help please, I am not able to run any games with this. It's as if my GPU doesn't recognize the display hence why games are refusing to run on it and the display quality is very low despite it being on 4k.
I'm having a really weird issue with this. Sucessfully installs and everything seems fine. I enable HDR on the client, boot Moonlight into desktop mode and then enable HDR there too. So far, so good. However, no games will actually work with HDR. Red Dead 2, Doom Eternal and MK11 all show my display as not actually supporting HDR, even though as far as I can verify it's working. HDR is enabled in Moonlight, and it works with my dummy plug, but it won't work this way. Weirdly when running Doom for example, it suggests I enable Auto HDR, which works and looks great, but no games in built implementation will recognise HDR is actually running.

When I stream using Sunshine to Moonlight on an Android phone some games that are running on the virtual display don't work properly, the ones I found so far are Read Dead Redemption 2 and Middle Earth Shadow of War. In these games the resolution cant be adjusted and is set to 480p. Have you come across any games that also exhibit this behavior?

Quick question, is there a way to force multiple virtual displays to retain their configuration post reboot? I'm trying out using all 5 and after a reboot they all return to default configs of 640 x 480 and all stack up to the right of my main display.

I have an Ultrawide G9 monitor but I have to manually split the screens so my stream is at 2560x1440p resolution on my OLED. Hey dude appreciate the video it helped! Im getting a weird issue when I start the stream via sunshine with HDR on, the colors are very red and vivid like theres too much happening. Disabling and re-enabling HDR manually when streaming fixes it but requires it every time. Any thoughts?

Re-Posted comment - Call me stupid, but it would really be nice if you could do (or point me to) a walk-thru on setting up Sunshine to Stream to the Steam Deck (which is on a dock connected to a 4k OLed TV) (in Game Mode and Desktop). Basically I want to Stream games that are very demanding on the deck from PC (Using Virtual Display Driver HDR version) to the deck (docked) and connected to the TV at high resolutions. That would make for a great tutorial video if you made it because I cannot find one like it anywhere.
Great work on this I've been looking for this solution for a long time. I do have some issues when viewing in settings though for HDR and Scaling when the primary monitor is disabled. Its like almost nothing in the windows display settings for it is clickable. Is this to be expected?

I am having the same issue through moonlight with the error "Host returned error: Failed to initialize video capture/ encoding. Is a display connected and turned on? (Error 503)". I haven't been able to resolve the issue as I initially thought it might be trying to use integrated graphics but I do not have that on my AMD 3950x. Any luck on your end?
@@mardon85 you can use displayfusion to setup a gaming profile with enabled only virtualmonitor and add command to sunshine, when you launch any application via moonlight automaticaly gaming profile applyied (monitor off only virtual on) and when you close moonlight default profile enable so monitor on again automaticaly and virtual off.

Is there a way to stop my cursor from going to the virtual monitor that I am streaming, or the other way around when I'm using the device im streaming on. I already made Sunshine set the primary monitor and move programs with commands. But cant figure out how to do this..

i tried to install it because when i play fifa i have locked 30fps it has something to do with refresh rate because i have only 60hz and my old one had 144hz and it was fine on 72fps so is there any way to trick windows into thinking my monitor have like 500hz or something? For example being just on my main screen but having fake 500 refresh rate so it can trick the game. If its not possible with this app is there any other that you can think of? I dont know if you understand what im asking for but thanks for any help.
This works fantastically, streaming HDR games to my steam deck OLED using the virtual display except for ONE thing. The HDR is waaaayy too bright, like the exposure is way too high up, everything is swallowed in white, any ideas?
I don't get it. What will happen if I create a 4k 120hz virtual display on my 1080p 75hz? I don't have the hardware. I guess it won't change visually anything but all of our apps will recognize the display as the one you defined?
No. Say you have a 120hz phone but only a 60hz PC monitor. If you stream PC gameplay to your phone, it will only support up to 60hz. But by using a virtual monitor, you can use the full 120hz. And even make the monitor the same resolution as your phone so it scaled properly. This won’t improve your physical monitor in any way.
@@MikeTheTech Here's the thing. There is a new feature "frame generation". There is a cool app "lossless scaling" which can generate x2 frames in games up to your monitor resolution and only. In the discord server they are telling me that I can create a virtual display 120hz in order to generate x2 frames using higher base fps. This way it's possible to trick the limitation of the base fps. I hope I didn't confuse you but I think it's interesting. For example on a 75hz I can achieve from 45->90 fps and it will display 75hz where the limit would be base 37fps.

Not working for me on 23H2. Copy all files to C:/, installed cert, added device in device manager and get Code 31 like lots of other people here. No updates available in Windows Update and I've selected "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available"
Unfortunately the HDR version doesn't work for me either. I always get the Code 31 error in device manager. The folder with the option.txt is on my C:\\ drive and Windows 11 is up to date (23H2)

I don `t understand. my monitor is 4k and 240 hz, hdr. why can't virtual do the same? only 60? after reinstalling all drivers in active use. My displayport began to display a picture even when the screen and blind spots were turned off... although it now took a very long time to turn on.
Edit the options.txt file and change the 60 for your resolution to whatever you’d like. Even above your supported one. Then save and reinstall the driver.

I brought this up because strange things are happening to me, I’m not sure that I can accurately describe the error or problem using Google translation, but I’ll try. The point is that in Windows you can use multiple desktops. on hdmi I was able to move the window to win+ctrl+d and return to the main window and the window would draw the picture. but my main 240hz monitor was losing frame rate to the screen connected via hdmi, but physically turned off - 30hz. However, the problem was solved by transferring it to a second screen, on a second desktop. after installing all drivers usbmmidd_v2.rar and VDD.23.10.20.2.zip, uninstalling, restarting my main monitor. The problem has returned to 240hz =30hz, but now the second Windows+ctrl+D desktop does not capture the image, showing a gray window.
@@MikeTheTech Well, do you know how to force the contents of windows to be displayed on the second desktop (win+ctrl+d)? for example, open a video on RUclips and move the browser and return to the first one, the preview of the second one will show a gray or black screen, but the sound will continue.
Any idea how to install multiple virtual displays? I add the driver multiple times in Device Manager (which results in multiple virtual displays in my settings), but it seems like I'm only able to use one when changing the settings in Display Settings
Edit the options.txt file in the C:/iddsampeldriver folder. Change the 1 at the beginning to another number (1-5) to tell itnhoe many displays. Then just reinstall the driver and it will check that file for the info.
Atfer used the virtual DISPLAY can't open the the file but can see on the taskbar. My monitor is 21:9,i want steaming on my 4k TV, so I use the virtual display. Any step I miss so I can' open the file？？
@martindescoteaux9288 when you turn off your real display, it automatically goes to primary. Otherwise you need to add it in Sunshine as default. I have a video on how to configure Sunshine as well
Can you add custom resolution to the options file? I’m specifically using this for moonlight on my iPhone which is 2796 x 1290. With nvidia I can set a custom resolution for my physical monitor but not the virtual one

However this causes moonlight to use my physical monitor’s resolution. If the physical monitor is off it will use the virtual monitor. Do you know how to use the virtual monitor only?

Not having to have your actual screen/disppay on when streaming is the usual use case. Matching resolutions and refresh rates that your main Display doesn't have is the second.
For some reason now when my computer boots it doesnt display video (through external display, dummy plug or driver) and only sometimes works with my display, otherwise my computer is basically bricked. Not sure how to fix as i can sometimes get in.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and it was working temporarily. Tried disabling my iGPU to fix this, and then rebooted. Wasnt working still so i rebooted in safe mode, and iGPU was suddenly enabled and the display driver was no longer showing up. Since then its been a BSOD and recovery mode, and I am unable to boot into safe mode. Am currently thinking am going to have to do a clean reinstall of windows unless i can remove it through the command line.
Any idea how i can get into safe mode with the black screen, or any way to get out of the black screen? I cant do the trick where you turn it off on boot because i cant see when the boot logo turns on.
For some reason, i get the code 31 with the driver and idk what to do, i have tried installing new drivers and a whole bunch of things at this point, i dont even know what ive done.
@@MikeTheTech I actually didn't want to use it as my main so I used DisplayFusion to create monitor profiles for the virtual display as the main monitor. I run a command before launching a stream to change the profile and one to change back after.
Very very weird issue... Hear me out. I'm just having the dreaded code 31 error with the HDR driver on Win 11 22H2, no biggie, but ... the other driver (no HDR) works like magic! I even added custom res/refresh line to options.txt (2200x1440 @ 120) for it & I was able to create such virtual display immediately. On the contrary when I do same exact steps for HDR version -- boom, no go! I checked "driver details", they both use same three sys/dll files, so why does the former say "I cannot load driver files" and the latter doesn't? 😢
Yup! Should work anywhere standard displays are supported in most cases. There are some cases that don’t show the driver listed, though, like in nvidia control panel.

1080p seems to have the higher refresh rates but that's about it :/

Found the solution for me. The folder "IddSampleDriver" musst be in c:/ with the option.txt.

Some systems still require an HDMI to be plugged in to the GPU for it to detect the display. Does mirroring work?

When I stream using Sunshine to Moonlight on an Android phone some games that are running on the virtual display don't work properly, the ones I found so far are Read Dead Redemption 2 and Middle Earth Shadow of War. In these games the resolution cant be adjusted and is set to 480p. Have you come across any games that also exhibit this behavior?

Quick question, is there a way to force multiple virtual displays to retain their configuration post reboot?
I'm trying out using all 5 and after a reboot they all return to default configs of 640 x 480 and all stack up to the right of my main display.

I have an Ultrawide G9 monitor but I have to manually split the screens so my stream is at 2560x1440p resolution on my OLED. To help me understand this video, will this enable me to play in that resolution without having to manually change it?

Hey dude appreciate the video it helped! Im getting a weird issue when I start the stream via sunshine with HDR on, the colors are very red and vivid like theres too much happening. Disabling and re-enabling HDR manually when streaming fixes it but requires it every time. Any thoughts?

Re-Posted comment - Call me stupid, but it would really be nice if you could do (or point me to) a walk-thru on setting up Sunshine to Stream to the Steam Deck (which is on a dock connected to a 4k OLed TV) (in Game Mode and Desktop). Basically I want to Stream games that are very demanding on the deck from PC (Using Virtual Display Driver HDR version) to the deck (docked) and connected to the TV at high resolutions. That would make for a great tutorial video if you made it because I cannot find one like it anywhere.
Great work on this I've been looking for this solution for a long time. I do have some issues when viewing in settings though for HDR and Scaling when the primary monitor is disabled. Its like almost nothing in the windows display settings for it is clickable. Is this to be expected?

I am having the same issue through moonlight with the error "Host returned error: Failed to initialize video capture/ encoding. Is a display connected and turned on? (Error 503)". I haven't been able to resolve the issue as I initially thought it might be trying to use integrated graphics but I do not have that on my AMD 3950x. Any luck on your end?
@@SouthernSavant I found my display was DISPLAY9 rather than the expected 3 for me. Perhaps you're having a similar problem?
Could try the sunshine command that gives you a rundown of connected displays as that's how I found it was number 9.
Can you give any futher tips on how to use this with Sunshine? Can I simply turn my monitor off and the system will use this by default instead?😊

@@mardon85 you can use displayfusion to setup a gaming profile with enabled only virtualmonitor and add command to sunshine, when you launch any application via moonlight automaticaly gaming profile applyied (monitor off only virtual on) and when you close moonlight default profile enable so monitor on again automaticaly and virtual off.
I have MonitorSwapper setup for exactly the same use case you want.

I can see another slightly bigger cursor when I use it in Parsec, but not with other physical monitor. And the system cursor is delayed, dragging behind the bigger cursor. Is there a fix for it? Big thanks, otherwise it works perfectly. Great stuff!

You can use OBS to create a projection window of the screen.
There is no option for audio. Windows says no audio device where as my plugin dummy plug has audio. Any ideas?

Sounds like you didn’t put the content into the C drive.
i tried to install it because when i play fifa i have locked 30fps it has something to do with refresh rate because i have only 60hz and my old one had 144hz and it was fine on 72fps so is there any way to trick windows into thinking my monitor have like 500hz or something? For example being just on my main screen but having fake 500 refresh rate so it can trick the game. If its not possible with this app is there any other that you can think of? I dont know if you understand what im asking for but thanks for any help.

This works fantastically, streaming HDR games to my steam deck OLED using the virtual display except for ONE thing. The HDR is waaaayy too bright, like the exposure is way too high up, everything is swallowed in white, any ideas?
Connect to it with your steam deck and maybe run the windows hdr calibration tool to calibrate it to the screen of the steam deck

I don't get it. What will happen if I create a 4k 120hz virtual display on my 1080p 75hz? I don't have the hardware. I guess it won't change visually anything but all of our apps will recognize the display as the one you defined?
No. Say you have a 120hz phone but only a 60hz PC monitor. If you stream PC gameplay to your phone, it will only support up to 60hz. But by using a virtual monitor, you can use the full 120hz. And even make the monitor the same resolution as your phone so it scaled properly. This won’t improve your physical monitor in any way.
@@MikeTheTech Here's the thing. There is a new feature "frame generation". There is a cool app "lossless scaling" which can generate x2 frames in games up to your monitor resolution and only. In the discord server they are telling me that I can create a virtual display 120hz in order to generate x2 frames using higher base fps. This way it's possible to trick the limitation of the base fps. I hope I didn't confuse you but I think it's interesting. For example on a 75hz I can achieve from 45->90 fps and it will display 75hz where the limit would be base 37fps.

Initial troubleshooting: is it Win 11 and you placed the options.txt into the C:\IddSampleDriver\ folder? It won’t install from other locations.
Also be sure to run Windows update. The driver is super recent.

Did you remove the folder to your C drive first and install the Certificate script as admin? And on Win11?

Can you try updating Windows in Windows update? Apparently it’s a very recent release.
Not working for me on 23H2. Copy all files to C:/, installed cert, added device in device manager and get Code 31 like lots of other people here. No updates available in Windows Update and I've selected "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available"
Filed have to be in c://IddSampleDriver/
Also be sure to install cert using the script, not manually.

Unfortunately the HDR version doesn't work for me either. I always get the Code 31 error in device manager. The folder with the option.txt is on my C:\\ drive and Windows 11 is up to date (23H2)
Try 23H3, it seems to include the appropriate dependencies. 23H2 seems to install it for some users but not all.

Nope. For now at least. Microsoft only released support for 11.

after reinstalling all drivers in active use. My displayport began to display a picture even when the screen and blind spots were turned off... although it now took a very long time to turn on.

Edit the options.txt file and change the 60 for your resolution to whatever you’d like. Even above your supported one. Then save and reinstall the driver.

I brought this up because strange things are happening to me, I’m not sure that I can accurately describe the error or problem using Google translation, but I’ll try.
The point is that in Windows you can use multiple desktops. on hdmi I was able to move the window to win+ctrl+d and return to the main window and the window would draw the picture. but my main 240hz monitor was losing frame rate to the screen connected via hdmi, but physically turned off - 30hz. However, the problem was solved by transferring it to a second screen, on a second desktop.
after installing all drivers usbmmidd_v2.rar and VDD.23.10.20.2.zip, uninstalling, restarting my main monitor. The problem has returned to 240hz =30hz, but now the second Windows+ctrl+D desktop does not capture the image, showing a gray window.
@@MikeTheTech Well, do you know how to force the contents of windows to be displayed on the second desktop (win+ctrl+d)? for example, open a video on RUclips and move the browser and return to the first one, the preview of the second one will show a gray or black screen, but the sound will continue.
That's a different feature all together. Multiple windows desktops doesn't switch displays.
Any idea how to install multiple virtual displays? I add the driver multiple times in Device Manager (which results in multiple virtual displays in my settings), but it seems like I'm only able to use one when changing the settings in Display Settings
Edit the options.txt file in the C:/iddsampeldriver folder. Change the 1 at the beginning to another number (1-5) to tell itnhoe many displays. Then just reinstall the driver and it will check that file for the info.
Atfer used the virtual DISPLAY can't open the the file but can see on the taskbar.
My monitor is 21:9,i want steaming on my 4k TV, so I use the virtual display.

@martindescoteaux9288 when you turn off your real display, it automatically goes to primary. Otherwise you need to add it in Sunshine as default. I have a video on how to configure Sunshine as well

Can you add custom resolution to the options file? I’m specifically using this for moonlight on my iPhone which is 2796 x 1290. With nvidia I can set a custom resolution for my physical monitor but not the virtual one

However this causes moonlight to use my physical monitor’s resolution. If the physical monitor is off it will use the virtual monitor. Do you know how to use the virtual monitor only?

Never mind as of the most resent windows update this has been fixed. So it was not on your end Mike the tech guy. windows broke and then fixed it.

What's is the benefit of running virtual display? Trying to get my head around to get it working with Moonlight and Sunshine.
Not having to have your actual screen/disppay on when streaming is the usual use case. Matching resolutions and refresh rates that your main Display doesn't have is the second.

For some reason now when my computer boots it doesnt display video (through external display, dummy plug or driver) and only sometimes works with my display, otherwise my computer is basically bricked. Not sure how to fix as i can sometimes get in.
Uninstall the driver via safe mode.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and it was working temporarily. Tried disabling my iGPU to fix this, and then rebooted. Wasnt working still so i rebooted in safe mode, and iGPU was suddenly enabled and the display driver was no longer showing up. Since then its been a BSOD and recovery mode, and I am unable to boot into safe mode. Am currently thinking am going to have to do a clean reinstall of windows unless i can remove it through the command line.
Any idea how i can get into safe mode with the black screen, or any way to get out of the black screen? I cant do the trick where you turn it off on boot because i cant see when the boot logo turns on.

I tried everything, it just won't work. Code 31 everytime. I'm starting to wonder if your GPU/drivers can affect this.

Open windows display settings, you can set the monitor as “main”. Some games also let you choose in their settings menus.
@@MikeTheTech I actually didn't want to use it as my main so I used DisplayFusion to create monitor profiles for the virtual display as the main monitor. I run a command before launching a stream to change the profile and one to change back after.

Very very weird issue... Hear me out. I'm just having the dreaded code 31 error with the HDR driver on Win 11 22H2, no biggie, but ... the other driver (no HDR) works like magic! I even added custom res/refresh line to options.txt (2200x1440 @ 120) for it & I was able to create such virtual display immediately. On the contrary when I do same exact steps for HDR version -- boom, no go!
I checked "driver details", they both use same three sys/dll files, so why does the former say "I cannot load driver files" and the latter doesn't? 😢

Yup! Should work anywhere standard displays are supported in most cases. There are some cases that don’t show the driver listed, though, like in nvidia control panel.
Why only windows 11? better than w10?
It uses a feature only available in Windows 11.
Will it work on windows 10 ?
Unfortunately no. Microsoft only pushed the driver to Windows 11 22H2+ from what I can tell.
