- The results of the Pokemon Trading Card Game Illustration Contest have been announced and they feature Pikachu, Eevee, Pokemon Cards, Cheating Entrants, Traced Artwork and AI Art! I'm here to give an overview of the Drama and spill the tea on how we can tell this is AI Art. I really hope the Pokemon Company does something about these cheaters, and real artists get their justice.

Okay, regardless of anyone's opinions on AI art as a whole, everyone should be able to agree that using it in a contest is absolutely cheating, like they should be disqualified immediately
Agreed and I don't have much of a issue with ai art being used as reference but not as an original piece
Unfortunately there's some less that average IQ people who can't even agree with that...
If people really want to to submit Ai stuff to a contest, just make one where that is the idea. If you think what you have is really worth submitting it should stand up in an even playing field. Plus you will get attention of people that actually might want to see it, rather then piss people for a little attention.
@@asdf30111 people have already done AI art competitions, funnily enough in one of them someone cheated in a real photo won, before being disqualified after finding out it wasnt AI
@@Jesty.r That actually was funny, it was a well done picture to mimic something an AI might output too if I recall correctly.
It's a shame that people who drew and designed gorgeous drawings for the competition were snubbed by AI images. There needs to be more control over AI when it comes to art competitions
for real
but actually why have artist submit they're work if someone will just use AI and this is just the start there will be more to come e
Easy solution, time lapses. Make people submit their time-lapse of drawing their entry. (Does ai do time lapses ever?)
Though not that common there are ai Timelapses
ai should be used to help people and gain ideas it should not be used as the final deliverable as everything should be drawn yourself and if you are the types to upload ai art and claim it as your own for the most part you are only cheating yourself and you are making yourself look silly
The fact that no one at Pokemon clocked that multiple entries were from one person is honestly so exhausting. And then the use of AI bothers me far more... I hate that someone's AI submissions are standing alongside the other finalists' artwork, let alone in place of other art. Thanks for the information in this video, and the really great point about art being the wrong place for AI: It does have use in other areas but not in a field basically stemming from creators' unique points of view and means of expression

Fr dude, specifically since the guy was using similar names for all of them
Definitely. I would guess they were only looking at the artwork they put through and not the names, and it wasn’t obvious untill they reattached the names to the artwork and put them all together online. I also can’t help but wonder how much of a role the language barrier played, Like were the names of the western entrants on their computers in English, or phonetically Japanese, and either way would that have actually made these alieuses, wich are so obvious to us, really so difficult to spot for them?
Plus we're talking about the biggest franchise in the world so I think they likely see similar names all the time. Try to imagine the amount of artists with the words poke or pika in their names @@serpentmaster1323

I’m thinking that the A.I. submissions may have slip through the checks and the people at the Pokémon company are currently trying to think of a way to prevent another incident like this.

Gonna have to do it the old fashion way by "Manually Moderating And Choosing" each and every artwork that's uploaded to the illustrations submission, and thus separate the A.I. art from the actual artist's work. Again, A.I. works are basically mods or cheat codes to make it look the same results that another artist, using an actual tablet, stylus, and art project, but not quite. It's such a shame that comments online, bots, fake users on multiple social media platforms, and A.I. machine websites & online services are running rampant on the internet.
@@SuperFlashDriver or just tell them to do it live
@@Nightimevibes Oh I wish that too..But why they never do it I'm not quite sure.
I’d also like to mention:
The sleeping the pikachu that you pointed out in the video, is also very likely AI. The anatomy is utterly nonsensical on pikachu’s back leg and the painterly style is random and doesn’t follow a pattern like a more intentional painting in that style would.
I just saw!! Im so sad from a glance at the thumbnail I thought it was so cute but again if you actually look at the art its obvious. Its so gutting
Gutting is such a perfect way to describe it. I recently changed my laptop background to a cute frog and realized a few days later that it was AI. It’s so obvious now that I spotted it, but gosh sometimes you really gotta look. It’s so saddening :(

Also the "its not looking good brev" with the Fanta Lite on desk KILLED me 😂
thanks lmaooooooo
First I randomly get this video recommended, now I see Kieran here as well.. Hey there! Haha
Even if AI isn’t against the rules if he entered more than 3 illustrations he should be disqualified. As I’m sure you and other artists who only submitted 3 would’ve submitted more but follow the rules correctly.
Especially in a contest, if you’re going to be giving away money as a top prize, rules should be enforced.
It’s gutting for those who worked hard such as yourself for sure
it's fun when ai art accidentally gives itself away because it got confused during some touch up stage about what it had just made
seeing the white of the eevee's tail in the air and thinking "ah i must've been making a cloud, let me just make it more cloud like"
or seeing a leaf in the background suddenly decide it's in front of the ear and trying to turn it into tufts of fur
it gives me hope that image generation will never truly be able to produce perfect images
This is so saddening. If they pay out to people who typed words into a machine to generate AI garbage, what's stopping them from skipping the payment of artists altogether and generating card illustrations from now on? Shame on the people who profit off of other's work and shove them out of the creator space.
For real
Vigen got 0 maidens and it shows - I hope TPCi fix this and redo the top 300 picks and fix it so that actually talented artists get a proper chance at the win! Your entries were dope af!

the weihang ye entries also have ai jank to them, if you look at the pikachus legs. cannot believe something like this was allowed to happen, i tweeted at the tcg twitter that im not gonna buy any of those cards if an ai image wins, cos they need to know their profits will take a hit if they dont do anything

AI needs to be banned for art contests,it's so disgraceful to real artists that work their asses off while ai can do shit in 5 minutes with 0 creativity and 0 passion and 0 love
NEW RULE:
during art competitions all art MUST be put in an AI art checker
I believe pokemon will do that next time
The only problem with that is that those checkers aren't that great and often tag real art as ai and vice versa. They need people to actually go through with training on how to spot AI and if need be, request for the WIP/original file.
@@SpacemanTheo I think that is unluckily because some of the signs that even Phee pointed out could be made by artists as well, either by mistake (like the droplets on Pikachu or the water reflection of the submerged part of Eevee) or by stylistic choice (like the background trees in the aurora Eevee). I take my own self for example, I would have put that Pikathumb where it was or paint the trees individually with brushstrokes. AI art checkers, just like the AI that generated it, don't "see" the piece, they analyze it part by part and lose, for example, stylistic consistency, focusing on what they are trained to recognize as an AI "clue" instead.
@@bebielieween It is AI identifying AI, you are correct.
Not a solution, those things are pretty bad
I think it's also kind of telling that this happened with Pikachu and Eevee. The two most popular Pokémon in the franchise. The reality is that these AI art programs have a hard time reproducing Pokémon, and can only reproduce the most popular ones. If you type in Eevee into one of those prompts, you'll get an Eevee. However try typing in Glaceon... You instead get a blue Eevee, maybe with some ice themes if you're lucky. I don't see this tech replacing human artists any time soon.
I sincerely hope these people get reported and disqualified. Such genuine trash attitude. Also, I love your koraidon entry, it was so adorable.
Thankyou!
I was not expecting an art/pokemon news/drama video out of this channel, but it absolutely works and I am here for it!
Glad to hear it haha
I just hate how AI takes away the soul and creativity that allows us to express ourselves. Each art form takes hundreds of hours for us to master. It just returns back a hollow product, without any story behind each creation. And it happens in all kinds of arts, music, everything.
Its so sad
Worst thing is it isn't the AI itself doing that. It's other living humans that we could be looking right at and never know. They care so little for the concept of art, and for the works of others, their hard work and focus and determination, that they think nothing of janking it for their own.
Too bad your Koraidon art wasn't chosen, I think it's really cute 🥪 🐲
Thankyou

The thing I hate most about Ai shovelers is saying the issue is about money, I don’t know about other artists but my issue is that it spits in the face of all time, sacrifices, and mental & emotional stress/struggles learning & improving one's art skills. I have mental disabilities and it’s still a struggle trying to improve myself, so seeing Ai people shitting on artists like this pisses me off.
I hope going forward, these kind of contests require you to submit your original file to examine layers for digital pieces, or at the very least required to upload WIPs
Honestly this sucks. Not only for what is (almost certainly) a bunch of AI generated image entries by one person faking having multiple identities but also I wasn't even aware this was a contest that was going on so I wasn't even able to enter it gosh dang it!
EDIT: Also I should mention I really liked your entries, the Koraidon especially is extremely cute.
Keep an eye out for the next one! And thanks
This whole situation also unfortunately creates the justification that a large businesses like this will use for not running these types of competitions. Very unfortunate.

A small company with no funds? Sure. But the company under the #1 world franchise is insane.

for real, its just depressing haha
I've spent a lot of time studying ai generated images, and most have a lot tells. As an inexperienced artist, some of it is difficult to describe, but there's a lot of ways to identify them like the rendering of the colors. I highly recommend that people who care about preventing ai from overtaking real art (and those who don't, should care) take time to look at images that are classified as ai generated to better identify themselves

nah lol. the AI submitter is trash but this is a giant wet fart on TCPi's befalf too. no excuse.

@@giganticmoon anything owned by a company is that company's fault in one way or another. In this case, again, it's on them for not hiring people who would know. And if AI was never even thought of or mentioned, why not, when it's been a contentious topic in the art world for years now?
Gotta say, it's pretty unsettling how good ai has gotten to the point where it could seem real at first glance. I remember when ai art was obviously wonky and being used for funny memes, not stealing placements that could be filled by real people.
I completely missed so many AI entrants, its only til I saw other people pointing stuff out that I really looked and realised what they were. AI is so convincing from a distance, but when you look closer that's when it really shows.
AI IS NOT ART!
I agree!
Not just insulting to people who’ve been doing art for years, like a bunch of friends of mine, but those that are attempting to learn, like me.
It's meat grinder, it takes from everything it can find related to the prompt and shits out an average
@@Dr.DisneyAI is a tool artists can use but it’s not a replacement
@@mr.jitterspam9552 If you mean to say that it does a search based on the prompt and takes the things found in this search and combines them, then that’s false.
What it does is it starts with random noise, and it makes two guesses,
one which is “what small amount of noise was added most recently to the image to produce this”
and the other which is “given that the encoding for the caption for the original image was [encoding for the prompt], what bit of noise was added most recently?”.
(where both of these estimation processes *are*, of course, “trained” based on the training set, and therefore are a consequence of those images+captions.)
and then it takes the difference between these predictions and scales it, and adds that to one of the two, and subtracts that amount of predicted noise from the image,
and it then repeats this process, making the image look less like random noise and more like a reasonable image.
It might sound like what I’m saying is an attempt to defend the use of such models.
Maybe in part? But I think my main concern is just that the criticisms made of it be accurate.
In any case, I certainly agree that one shouldn’t submit ML image generation model produced images to competitions which forbid them, and that one shouldn’t deceive people and try to pass off images one produces with such a model as being something one drew oneself.
Doesn’t help they’re all on Pikachu and Eevee, aka some of the most entry level Pokémon. That just screams “I just learned about this franchise”. Or more likely that they’re more likely to come out “good” from the AI due to being more well known. Either way, gross.
The contest selected which mons people needed to draw
@@BJGvideos Still, there were more than those two
I know Vigo probably thought "So many people go through life with the same or similar names. John Smith. David Johnson. Why can't I just pretend it's all a coincidence?" But like...maybe he could've used a less unique name?? Course then he goes and makes it worse by submitting a bunch of AI images to boot.
For real, like at least use a different art style or something haha
Whoever was in charge of picking these entries is crazy! How could any person pick AI art over Sammich the Koraidon?
They propably didn't realise it was AI. I hope.
Ai content should have a strict watermark that implies it's made in Ai and can't be used officially Purpose
They can’t get away with this, if they do that will only empower all “ai artists” to continue this crap
Also for the record I do not recognize an ai artist as an artist
The "Pikachu" in the stadium has Squirtle hands! 😂
did no one catch that katchadoorian is the main charachter in the "middle School" book franchise?
It's been forever since I've read those books
like even EVEN if you were to defend that maybe this is just their art style or whatever, they still broke the 3 drawing rule by posting multiple.
Your Koraidon entry was so cool, and perfect for the sandwich loving dragon. I mean no offense to those who made it. As long as they're not suing AI like the Eevee and Pikachu
That Koraidon illustration of yours is so good! It doesn't show much of the actual Pokémon... because it's displaying its personality, front and center!!
There is no reason AI art should be allowed. That's insane. Especially in the case of multiple entrees. This is another L for The Pokémon Company. They keep allowing grifters to ruin experiences in collecting, and now this. They really need to invest in a division specifically to keep their ear to ground, and allow them to make choices that benefit the community.
I think Creatures in their poor judgement did not think about AI art at the time, probably due to these tools and programs weren't as easily available back then. It explains why there isn't any mention about it in their rules. Between when the contest was announced and it's deadline, many of these AI tools and programs became public so quickly.
That stinks! Why do people these days use AI art for anything when artists like you do hard work with great details.
This is why AI needs to stop being used for stuff like this.

Know u might not be looking for a broad answer, but consumers see paying for the time and energy spent with human spawned art as an unnecessary expense when an AI software can create “unique” visual content in a few seconds and people only have to pay a subscription fee.
The practice diminishes human creativity in all facets, and makes art seem like a job as opposed to a passion
@@purplemismagius28 I disagree. Art made by actual people with love and care makes a stronger impact than AI generated material.
Look at the classic paintings of centuries old. The Mona Lisa, the Egyptian Walls, the Paintings of the Norse God Thor. Those were made by actual people way before AI. Artificial generated images do not make the same impact as true work.
@@kaprosuchus9391This doesn’t really seem to be a reason (though there may be other reasons!) not to use ML image generation models for *anything*.
For one thing, most people aren’t hiring Leonardo da Vinci, nor a modern equivalent.
To say “a great artist would produce a higher quality result”,
well, no doubt!
but one doesn’t hire an (expensive) great-artist to commission frivolities.
Someone looking to purchase the service of “create for me an image depicting ” will always have a trade-off to consider, among monetary costs, wait time, and quality of the piece produced.
ML image generation has extremely low wait times compared to a person, and also very low money costs. And, how much these 3 factors matter to the person making the decision, depends on their situation and goals etc.
That’s not to say “therefore it is sometimes permissible to use such models.”
Rather, it is to say “the fact that a skilled human artist would produce higher quality results, doesn’t imply that it is irrational (relative to their goals) for someone to choose to use such an ML model”
That koriadon you drew is ADORABLE I LOVE IT! Bet you spent ages on it! Can’t believe pokemon missed the ai trash, sometimes it is hard to distinguish if you are not looking closely.
It's crazy that no one could tell that they're AI or that those entries were all by the same person, it really makes you question how exactly they can be considered reliable to judge any actual artwork at all, if this is the level of carelessness they have in a contest that means A LOT to many artists and for which they're even giving out a money prize.
That is awful and really hecking unfair ^^' I do really hope that the AI art entries get disqualified and are at least against the rules in the future, and also that the person submitting so many entries is maybe disqualified ^^'
I'm sorry your art didn't get in, but it looks really pretty, the Koraidon is really cute! And I love the Twitter posts you shared of people's art that didn't get in, too, those look super cool too!
This is why I'm uncomfortable with A.I. It's everywhere, and as far as art goes, basically putting artists out of a hobby they may enjoy.
I might have joined the art competition myself (if I'd known about it) but I doubt TPC would have chosen artwork designed to appeal to gen 1/2 style sprite work, which I'm currently working on for my own game.
That's up to the people who commission it. Always pick human!
Ai art is the worst when it's in the wrong hands. For me as an artist it's frustrating to live in this world that for some reason ignores true genuine well made artwork made by human hands and gives Ai art attention when the hard working artist work get attention in contests.
Your artwork looks amazing cuppa phee ❤

They have to be really careful with Ai because it would ruin the whole tcg. Not even kidding. They also need to make it strict, such as providing sketches before and after or some type of blueprint or time-lapse. Surprisingly my favorite illustrations of each pokemon dont even look close to Ai🤣.

AI Art is ruining art. I can't surf an art website without coming across the disturbing looking AI Art 3/5 times! Makes it harder for me to find real new artists too!
which is why I'd prefer to do hand drawn pokemon drawing and no ai art.
WE SHOULD DESTROY AI FOREVER
yes please
Given the wide range of what is considered "AI," and the potential (and actual) positive applications (not just negative ones out there), IMO this seems like a gross overreaction IMO.
I remember people saying those of us against AI art were "alarmist propagandists." Well, look at this. We were proven right.
I'm sorry but why the heck yhey didn't accept your cutie Koraidon? Pokemon should get cracking on the AI submissions
I'm your thousandth like!! 💕💕
I'm hoping AI generated stuff will come and go, as an *actual* artist it kinda just feels like a gimmick to me. I remember using an ai app wayyyyy wayy back when it first popped up, I think I used an app named "Wonda"? All I really did with it was make swirly backgrounds for a few days and then got bored lol.
Also, I do art commissions and honestly I haven't really seen any form of drop in clients, mainly because (most) people who buy commissions want actual art drawn by a person. However...I'm definitely not going to be doing art for a company, that's just not stable anymore. Even if they did hire me and I spent a few years there, they have the rights to train an AI with the art I've made over those years (yes this has happened already to other artists in companies).
How does anyone work for a company like that? That's theft of intellectual property.
@@BJGvideos yep 💀 it depends on the company, but obviously if they put that in their TOS/contract it's not a company centered around artists
@@mallowskycotl So how does anyone sign that contract? Do they not read it first?
@@BJGvideos it wasn't that big of a deal until now (with ai and all that). It would simply say smt like "We have the rights to your artworks/designs that you make under our company.". Sp it makes sense at first because you're making the artwork for a company after all, but now they're able to use that rule against artists since that TOS falls under AI use (at the moment anyways, it might change)
@@mallowskycotl Goddamn. And even that struck me as too extreme to the point where I wondered why artists would sign with these greedy places. But now when they're claiming they can reuse anything you make and shove it in a generator, that's beyond the pale.
Saw a comment saying the only AIs that should be allowed in this contest are the ones from Zero Lab. Which is an adorable image gotta say. I'd also let the Porygon line join if they wanted.
Also it really shows the "creativity" of these "artists" that he couldn't even bother to come up with unique names.
"Cuppa Nation?" Is that what we are?
There was an update. TPCI disqualified those entries for breaking the rules of having more than 3 entries, not for being an AI art.
A friend entered this to and didnt placed. Having that vigo's multiple entry place with possible AI art is infuriating
Skill issue
Ai art >>> your friends art 😂
Just saw something similar happen for a Spawn cover contest. It's only going to get worst
Do you think they used their real art within the art to bypass the ai checker?
We did it everyone! The official Pokémon TCG account on Twitter/X has responded and they stated that they are aware of the situation and have taken action to disqualify the cheaters and to select new winners for the top 300!
ai art is ruining EVERYTHING at this point
I’m pretty sure weihang ye’s are also ai
If TPC doesnt do smth about it and we end up seeing AI slop oj cards, I'm going ballistic like a Russian ICBM
Callong the. Robits feels disrespectful to my vacuum
So not only is this guy a talentless AI artist, but is also a talentless TRACER...
My friend and I love circling all the inconsistencies with AI, and the AI bros writing them off as masterpieces and the bros themselves being better than actual artists, like no... you typed words into a box and pressed the generate button, or the create button. I've examined my fair number of generators and spoken with the minds behind them, and major props to those who have talked to me, as they were very cordial.
We need a setting to tell weather it's AI generated Art and to protect your Art from AI.
I believe is a rotten rotom wash left in the river 🤣
Good work there, Detective Inspector Phoebe...
thank you very much my good sarge
the judges are 100% non-artist because if they were, they'd catch these AI entries easily.
Well now we know that TPC puts as much regard into the cards as much as they put care and work into the games! Literally next to ZERO. This whole situation is genuinely frustrating and sickening
