  • In the early '70's Lee Iacocca put together a team of young Ford designers known as the 'Wiz Kids'. Buck Mook was one of those young designers tasked at imagining one of Fords most iconic cars, the Mustang. Of all the design sketches submitted Buck's initial sketch was chosen from amongst all the young designers at Ford to be the starting foundation of the iconic Mustang II.

    Thanks for posting. My first car was a '74 Stang ii hatchback, V6, 4 spd, which I bought for 2250.00 in 1981. Excellent handling car for its day, won Motor Trend car of the year. I still own it to this day, now sports a 69 351W. 10.7-1 CR and a Ford big block Toploader.

    Great to see the designer and the designs...I started out as a Ford guy, drifted far away, these older machines from simpler times are amazing to me, I hated the 1971 design but these are classic looking, albeit could have been a little larger for my liking, but these saved the day in the MPG department. I've modified engines for years to be efficient, you can have power and mileage, one early attempt was a Chevy Monza 2+2 with the 2 year only 262 V8 2BBL auto, that would garner 28 MPG highway at 70 MPH with some basic wrenching and tuning. I'm sure these would respond in kind.

    I'd really like to have a white '76-'77 Cobra II with blue stripes and a 302. Cool cars.

    Thanks for this personal account of designing the Mustang II and sharing how receptive Mustang II owners are to invigorating if not perpetuating an affinity for the vehicle's design.

    Over a million produced, and so very few now, definitely going to be a hot collectable.

    Cars always look to be travelling at such high speed in car designers sketches that the shape gets transformed as if the vehicle is on the verge of warp speed. By the way, nice looking Continental in the background.

    That wave shaoe from hood to trunk on 1974 Mustang II (front profile fender to rear wheel) I can see it in Corvette too, or even 2018 Mazda Miata M5.
    I remember in 1999 a neighbor lady had a Mustang II in brown metallic and vynil roof in cream color, and I asked her if it was for sale, sje told me mmm, yep, do tou like it? Aw yessw, I said her. I was almost tve owner, but I did bot buy it. Why? Ass hole.ñ is the answer. Interior all beige-apricot, automatic, good state, running good, etcétera. All for today USD700 (Chilean money).

    First year no V8 available,13" wheels,no power windows, seats or cruise, never a convertible, what a waste, this car could be the first mini brougham to export and a new phenomenon but no just a lemmon instead

    1975 seems to be the most uncommon year of Mustang II that you ever find these days. Cool example, not the best color.

      I remember the '75 silver ghia with the padded vinyl top with the cranberry cloth interior. I knew someone who bought one new, and it was a great car for many years.

    Iacocca was right to take it back to it's compact roots. Too bad it corresponded with the smog era of low horsepower. Can't imagine one with 1971 boss 351 drivetrain...

    Very nice video. I always wished that Ford would have stretched the wheelbase about three inches but overall this was a much prettier car than the 73 Mustang monstrosity.

      @From the Futon I agree with you on the '71--73 regarding the regular fastback/Mach I, and the convertible. The coupe on those three I didn't care for. I again agree with you on the '69 and '70, as far as the coupe and convertible go. Bloated and shapeless, the irony of those two years were that the fastback/Mach I were (to me) were 2 of the best looking fastbacks they ever produced! The nice thing about the '71-'73 is that they were only slightly larger than the '69-'70 which (the extra length) allowed them to be sleeker. I'd love to hear if you feel that way too.

    • @robmcgowan4034
      @robmcgowan4034 3 года назад

      @From the Futon Although my feelings are still the same with my '71-'73 preference for the Mach I and convertible, the Grande still has the great lower body of the other two. I think it's the roof line on the Grande that's keeping me from liking it. If IT had the same rear roof line as the conv I'd probably like it almost as well. Even as it is, I too wouldn't mind having a '73 Grande now. Hmmm, I think a burgundy body with a white padded top! :-)

    I would never brag if I were responsible for the mustang2end result ....truly one of the most pathetc model runs ...just AWFUL! I know a lot of it had to do with gas crisis and bumper impact regulations but STILL ....just AWFUL! Too bad they did not follow one of his sketches more BTW the ONLY reason Ford got the sales figures they did was simply EVERY US made car in it's size/price catagory was equally lame ....the worst years in American car buying if you ask me...people that had to buy a new car could choose between crap choices is all....or buy used is what smartest ones maybe did ....or buy pickup trucks or imports....embarassing years to be american

      Obviously he was a young designer at the time…the sketches look far better(especially the first concept)…his seniors should have helped to proportion better the volumes, and guide better the surface movements. As a professional car designer it seems to me,the sketch to reality passage was a disaster. But one cannot blame the junior designer for this, that is what you have the more experienced designers in the team….unless some personalities outside the design department wanted to play designer and messed things up…trust me it happens a lot.
