I feel you man. I started writing sci-fi books ten years ago and loved it. I was active duty navy and thought I could get to the point I could go full time by the time I retired from the navy. At one point I was close, but then my productivity dropped and I was overwhelmed. By the time I retired I had one book left to publish and it fizzled. I retired right at the beginning on the pandemic, and lost the job I had lined up about two weeks prior to getting out of the military. I scrambled and actually failed up into a great new career. But my writing became a burden to the point I quit for a year and a half.
I started writing again last July and have recently published a new book, got a publishing deal for a new series, and refocused on marketing to the point I’m generating an income again.
I know it’s disheartening to have your plans blow up in front of you, but maybe it’s an opportunity to propel yourself to new heights.
    Good luck man.

Dear Drew, I still am at sea, offshore tugboats.. And I still don't allow my spirit to quit. No chances. Sometimes is dam tough depending on the crew I am being a part of but in the end I always land with some demo to hit the studio with. And you know what? The tougher the sea the deeper the riffs. At least we have some real stuff to tell into music. Dudes, WE DON'T QUIT. NEVER. ❤

@the Bunn, fellow musician and artist here. Not quite as far along in my journey but I had a similar experience. Lived up north and was working, painting, and practicing 🎸 every waking hour which culminated in me starting my own home buisiness to sell my art etc. Then covid hit, forced me to close shop. I've since relocated to Az back up and running playing solo and displaying my work. I've been following your story along the way and it's helped motivate me to keep going even when I doubt myself. Thank you, and rock on

This really hits home for me. A few months into finally getting a tiny studio in my bedroom up and running I received some rough news. I had acquired a monitor to edit on, I had a desk big enough to hold it, as well as having enough space to leave my audio interface plugged in and computer ready at all times. Small steps for some but massive for me.
I had just launched this channel, a channel dedicated to music, and I had to leave all that behind and leave the country with my family. Instruments and all. I currently have no idea when we are able to return, and we are staying in various Air Bnbs currently, just waiting to be able to return.
I didn't want to let something like that stop me from what I had set out to do, with either of my channels, so stopping wasn't an option. Adapting was the only option on the table. I am currently working on releasing my debut album as an artist/creative, and I am writing midi guitar in the meantime. I have no instruments at all, not even a midi keyboard.
It's not ideal, and it's certainly very frustrating to have to work like this. To not even have a space set up and ready to go, to have questionable wifi and no control over my acoustics or surroundings.
So I feel you here Scott, and I'm sorry this happened. Hopefully something really cool can come of it one day, once you are far enough on the other side of this forced change to see where it brought you.
And lastly man, your videos are some of the best on RUclips, and thank you for sharing them with all of us. From a very selfish point of view, I hope you never stop doing this.
    All the best to you.

With so many options available it's easy to get lost and distracted in the sea of WELL IF I HAD THIS I or THAT I could do this or that, it's been a nice change for me to write by hand the past 4 months and not use technology, or lack thereof as an excuse to why I don't do what I'm compelled to do. . As a wife and mother of 2 I'm cooking and cleaning and playing and sometimes making excuses not to do what I need to do on top of family life.. life can be demanding, but allowing myself to go to my notebook when inspiration strikes has been an important step for me to take. I'm not abandoning the rest of my life to write. . I've had to change my thinking, give up guilt driven ideas and relax into myself.

    • @thebunn
      @thebunn  2 года назад +2

Yesssss! It seems that a lot of us get caught in that loop of thinking that we have to "do so much" to get where we want to go but end up doing nothing because of our "lack of time". I was stuck in that for quite a while. Your example of "allowing myself to go to my notebook when inspiration strikes" really hits home. On my own path, taking that 15, 30, or 60 min every day was what got me out of the slump of waiting for the "perfect" situation to start creating. It was amazing what that amounted to after 6 years. Stoked for you to see it and allow yourself those moments. They make all of the difference.

If you haven't already, check out the VSTs "Loki" and "Odin" by Solemn Tones. They're sampled from real instruments, ready for low tunings, and since they're clean DIs you can run them through any virtual or live rig. A little attention to articulation, some randomization, and you can make guitar/bass tracks that are basically indistinguishable from the real thing.

I’ve covered yngwie, periphery, meshuggah, etc. so I can play technical too, but adhd, and work requirement have made it difficult to balance. I look to this channel as a reminder that I should never give up, it’s my will to power to do this. I’ll die before I surrender. Anyway thank you !

Recently my band had to give-up the space we have been renting since 2014 and id completely destroyed our productivity. While me and both guitarist can easily work at home and even have nice setups, both drummer and vocalist don't have a way to do so because they are the ones who cannot play silently and live on rented homes that they cannot afford to modify in a meaningful way.
New spaces we have found either don't allow for long term rent, are completely not prepared in terms of isolation or are basically shitholes with not security whatsoever.

Getting all messed up creatively through this disturbance of my flow estate (I was painting, illustrating, building up some reputation, until 2008 economical crisis left me with a backpack in a dodgy room in a dodgy village in the UK) pushed me to make the best of the situation turning it into something much better than it was before. Dude! Your story is so reflective of mine over the last few decades. I grew up playing guitar since age 6. I got into hip hop big time in the late 80,s and started producing, collecting records and building my studio. At 19 I had my first studio and it has evolved over the years. In 2003, I decided to go to a music school to get my engineering degree. I was the oldest person at school! I was 30 then. After graduation I moved back to my hometown of Chicago and began interning at local studios. I starved! Luckily I had some family support. My view and passion of music had changed at this point. I did not find passion in creating anymore and did not know how to continue. As most musicians, I feel depression is a huge inspiration.
I took a job making good money, working my ass off while in the back of my mind I knew I needed music. I spent four years working seven days a week, 12 hour days for years!
I decided I had made enough money and decided to move from Chicago to Augusta ga. My plan was to find a rental spot and open a studio. I found a spot and I was getting a lot of rappers. Not like the hip hop I love so dearly, this was Terrible! So...I closed down and put my studio in my home. I had everything I yearned for! A home, tons of nice gear, walls of records but yet...no interest
I ate some mushrooms and meditated on my situation. I decided to sell everything and take time for other interests I dove deep into kayak fishing and started a RUclips channel called Bassholes KAyak Fishing.
I noticed that I had found a new creative outlet for myself where I could step away from music, but still be creative. I put tons of hours into bassholes shooting content, traveling, becoming obsessed with something new and creative! Only to find myself asking the same questions as you now!
I decided to sell my kayak stuff and rebuild my studio! Even better then before! I sold my cameras, etc crap I didn’t really need like lights, etc. I already talk to myself and found out no one really wants to listen to me so...I put my interest back in my music. No cameras for now! Just health, gym, music, gardening and life. I work a city job that pays the bills and slots me plenty of free time. Now I am just trying to comprehend life, find a balance again and create for soul and not views or numbers.
I haven’t left RUclips for good. I have left all social media until I can recoup some personal time and get some things in order. It does take a huge toll on the soul. To be a content creator. Lord knows! At our age, it’s even tougher brother. I loved your stuff! You inspired me to take my music to different levels and put stuff out there. I got faith in ya kiddo. Reflect, regroup, grow again when its right brother

So one of the things I personally really like lately is when bands/artists do play throughs, like the omnific and polyphia. Not only do I watch these videos, but I also REWATCH them (ad $), something I never do with normal youtube videos. It doesn't need to be super fancy like a "music video", I just want to see what it looks like to play these amazing riffs that I have been listening to all day while I'm at work. If you can include tablature at the bottom, even better. It doesn't even have to be the full song, people love these "shorts" anymore. This way you can create something new, from something you already have and know well. Best of luck brother, keep doing what you are doing!

Dig how you unpack your thoughts & creative process with an eye towards the context switches & managing the overall cognitive load
I worked as a pro for 13 years straight but major life problems forced me to quit an array of solid income streams, leave the city with my connections and become a full time caregiver for my ALZ mother and thought it was over forever
Somehow in a tiny rural town via the internet I met new people and forged a new direction in house & techno and got over 50 12” vinyl releases nationally distributed via a bunch of small indie dance labels
Wishing you the best on whatever journey you’re on. Monetize first, create second is the opposite of what most creatives tend do but securing the revenue is key to giving you the space for your personal creativity
You have no realized gains or losses until you QUIT for good

I’m working towards building two RUclips channels, one primarily music and the other for Fantasy/Sci-Fi topics. I’ve had to dive headlong into learning multiple new disciplines including 3D Art/Animation/Environments as well as drawing in addition to multiple instruments that I continue to practice and study. It’s a slow burn, but hopefully I’ll build enough income to replace enough of what was lost and it will be doing what I love and not working for someone else.

I think in terms that are current. What i mean by that is that holding on to things that cant stay or want to leave saps my energy. I quickly begin changing the view/my perception to make the most of the "new situation". The new situation is the current balanced version of my last view/perception. So the world worked with me to give me what i wanted. Now i have to figure out why it looks "this way" instead of "the way I envisioned". In the sacrifice, you have settled the old and move forward with what is "now". This will make you stronger and braver you let it. This will challenge the way you thought before if you let it. I love to find out what the universes "vote" was. Because there is no such thing as coincidence.

    Hey Bunn,
Good to see you back and recovered from Covid. I've been drawing on your work ethic for my own music and my own work. I'm finishing a Ph. D. and needing to look for new jobs, tend to unemployment, and still find the time for myself, to make music, and to be active. Sometimes this stuff feels like a bunch of setbacks and a never-ending to-do list that has more tasks added than removed. Everyone has their own challenges, and I'm happy to see that you're attacking yours with positivity and structure.
The point you bring up about structure is a good one. I've been working as a student advisor alongside my Ph. D. and for years I have been telling people that structure is what gets things done. You can't wait for inspiration or motivation. You've just got to lay one brick down at a time and any progress, no matter how small, is still good progress. Setbacks happens, life happens, but trying to maintain some structure even in a reduced capacity is important to staying on top of stuff.
I've also been juggling different jobs and responsibilities the last few years, and I can agree that task switching is a difficult thing. My head needs some space and time to clear out before moving onto the next task, if the task is markedly different. Instead of breaking down a single day into multiple different tasks, I've been trying to manage one task each day and breaking up the week. I find it gives me the motivation to get a big task done, gives me a full evening and night of sleep to decompress and reset, and then I can meet a new task the next day and commit to it. It doesn't always go according to plan, but it is a useful structure. The point is, for anyone reading comments, figure out a structure that works for you and try to stick with it.
Hopefully the new working space proves itself useful. The idea of short form videos is a good idea as well. If you can knock out filming 4-5 videos in a single day, you save time on lighting and rigging setup, which is time that can be spent on other tasks, like editing, script writing, etc. I think you have a decent audience here who would appreciate seeing shorter videos for a while. Good luck.

Moving places, losing my designated office was a huge setback as all of my stuff was suddenly spread across my new place, parents basement and rehearsal space and it just drove me insane.
But in the long run it forces me to go back to the "drawing board" and rethink the "what's and why's" of my RUclips endeavors. Also being short on time due to parenthood forces me to boil it down, which helps me because I tend to be a little all over the place with my ideas.
Working on concepts that can be done efficiently and still have a range of stuff without spreading myself too thin.

Great content, amazing production value, stylish design…. Keep it up. I got kick out of my first post production studio space which force me to rent a much bigger but a lot more expensive space. We sublet half to be able to afford it. 9 years on, we taken over the whole space and the business is thriving. It was a blessing in disguise.

Another great video, Bunn. I relate to you more and more as I watch. I have recently realized that I may have ADD/ADHD, which I think is one of my biggest challenges when it comes to productivity and also life in general. Seeing how you organize your day is helpful, I just couldn't help but notice that a day job isn't part of it. Unless I have missed something about that, your tenacity and industriousness in making it work without that reliable source of income is very admirable.

I’m loving the vibe of the new studio! The old studio had a really unique vibe to it as well (and if I’m being honest apart of what made me wanna wanna your channel, I know shallow but whatever) but this place just seems more “RUclips-y”. A lot of creators start to get this big colorful spaces as the grow and this feels like the space now, especially that last shot where you were sitting on that couch OMFG, it was awesome!
I’ve said it before but I really do look forward to this video series every month, it’s inspiring and insightful to see what an average person goes through when they’re making music and trying to forge their own path in the music industry!
I can’t thank you enough for what you’re doing and can’t wait to see more, cheers!

Your channel is very interesting. I’m starting a musical endeavor where I have absolutely zero internet presence. No streaming,Facebook, RUclips, emails, website, NOTHING. I’m going Ultra low key pre-internet probably just cassette tapes, fliers, maybe a 1-800 number, old time fan club membership through USPS, and 3x5 post cards mailed out with info on up coming concerts and order forms. We’ll have t shirts and eventually CDs and VHS tapes, cassettes at shows. I need to figure out how to prohibit the use of cell phones because I don’t want any video to be leaked no Bootlegs here. If people want to take photos it’ll have to be with a camera that uses actual film that has to be processed. Im 100% serious and this is the only way I will move forward with this. Good luck with your business model and music.

That's a great idea, pronstorestiffi! On my site I can offer digital "gift cards", while on Bandcamp there is an option to "Gend as Gift" to others, which is right below the "Buy Album" section. Do you think the "gift card" option is worth trying?

SPACE: 2010, had a 750 sqft space in ATL I used as a studio. That proved to be too much of a burden, so I downsized. I have worked from home, since that time. For awhile, I had a live-work space I shared with my (now) wife... but the rent increases.... In 2016 I moved north, and now inhabit part of a large house in New Hampshire. We have basically taken over the entire basement and have converted it into usable studio-office space.
WORK: working alone SUCKS. Actually, the part that is hardest is CREATING COMMUNITY AROUND THE WORK. Like you, I have difficulty with task switching. I like to bury myself. But this is a detriment to building community -- which you seem to have mastered. Congrats! Live performance does not seem to be part of your business plan. Is that true, and if so - why? Also... are you solo or partnered? Curious how that helps/hinders you. Great to see you still kicking. YOUR PAINTINGS ARE AMAZING. (I'm working on AI comics, ATM). Cheers!
