This hits home pretty hard. I’ve tried to stick with social media but I just can’t keep up with short form stuff so I just stopped everything but RUclips for the most part. All of the other platforms feel bad for my brain as a consumer and I feel wrong adding to all of that noise.
RUclips feels like it provides more value than mindless doom scrolling, and your new video is a perfect example. It’s too long for short form and that’s why I like it. You’re providing value for us by taking us along on a journey, and that just can’t happen effectively on those other platforms.
As you can see, I’m also long winded as fuck, so the other platforms are a trap for people like me. 😅

I find it hard to believe that 9 of your videos went to trash because your production quality is actually insane for a one man show. I always love your content, your music, and your attitude towards these things. And I will keep it that way. If you post only one video a year I will still be watching it.

    • @thebunn
      @thebunn  19 дней назад +2

I appreciate that Dr. Kloebner! The quality of the videos that a batch produced was indeed trash. Meaningless and embarrassing trash. When you make stuff just to have a lot of it, instead of making things that you care about, it doesn't work out so well. Look at the general state of RUclips. It's mostly garbage. People chasing what they think the algorithm wants. It's like McDonalds. They sell a lot of burgers, but everyone agrees that it's garbage. I would way rather make less stuff and put my heart and soul into it. When I die, I want to be confident that I gave a shit.

  • @BrodyLambden
    @BrodyLambden 7 месяцев назад +1

The social media trap is an easy one to fall into. It makes you think you're being productive. But when you have that moment of clarity, you realise it's actually holding you back to a large extent.
There's two things that really matter at the end of the day, and that's being happy with what you're producing, and quality over quantity will always be worth the wait.
Good to see a new video too. Keep positive and head the way you know you need to regardless of anything else🤟

Thanks for sharing this; I totally relate!
Last year, I felt like all I was doing was making a bunch of "throw away" content and not actually making any music. This year, I've reversed that; I'm prioritizing song production, and I'm trusting that if I focus on making a good song with a high quality video, that will fuel the rest of the content needed to promote it.
    Quality > Quantity

Great to see you back creating Bunn. Good to see you moving up and focused. I feel this as a creative person. Love what you do and looking forward to the new Ep when you get it done. Welcome back

100%! Yeah, being "everywhere" kind of means you are nowhere. I firmly believe that our principal work improves if the publishing pipeline is focused. The more "McDonald's" an effort gets, the more watered down and generic everything gets. Stoked to be back!

I miss you. We miss you. I feel this in a big way. I hate what this thing has done to us or maybe more accurately, what we’ve let it do. I think the fear of not being seen every day/week and losing perceived momentum. It’s tough and it’s grounds for burn out. All that said… I love your music and I think it makes you so unique.

Great job Bunn - I think as creatives we tend to bring our high standards to everything, which can become a bottleneck.
These days what I think to myself is “how can I get maximum enjoyment from this in the moment” because that’s all it is, we get these little snapshots of time to do what we love, and instead of placing conditions on what things have to be, we just work with them as they are and what they’re revealing themselves to be.

I think this is great advice for anyone, not just music artists. Taking a good hard look at what you want to do and how to get there. Taking small manageable chunks and reevaluate after each milestone. Realize that the path isn't a linear one that there will be backtracks and pitfalls. Learn what you can, do what you're good at, and see if you can delegate if possible. Enjoy the ride it will be a roller-coaster.

    You're baaaack!
This vid came just in time for me...was just about to shut it all down. My RUclips channel is dying a slow death (no impressions anymore), Instagram doesn't distribute my posts anymore, and the people who do see them just click like and swipe without listening (it's obvious), I started Rumble and Tumblr accounts which have not taken off, and I deleted TikTok because it's stupid and my bank account got hacked shortly after opening it (read the terms and conditions you agree to with TikTok, and you'll deleted it, too.)
In any case, I've decided to keep making what I want to make and have a body of work I can show to potentially interested musicians when I change countries (again) this summer. The Chuck Cassidy band will happen! Cheers, man!

I was just thinking about what you up to a couple of days ago. Low and behold a video that hits home with me, I haven't used social media for the last two years. I just don't have the time or care to make time to be constantly on there. One thing I realized this last year is that it's not very fun learning multiple positions in a business that your the only employee, especially when you are doing art and have never been an "artist ". Recording, engineering, good music, and solid sounding mixes is a time-consuming process. Yet alone writing shit you personally like and want to continue playing. Just know you're not alone in this world and keep on keeping on. If ever I can be of assistance with some bass, artwork, collaboration, anything at all hit me up, my door is always open.
    Bass regards,

Reading through your comments, it seems you have inspired a bunch of other musicians, myself included, in this new Era of music/content,...especially with social media content having an insatiable hunger. When I started back in music, as a solo artist, j 2020, I'd come off an 8 year hiatus, and thought I'd never play again. Coming back, realized how important it was, for me to write, (for my mental issues) but wanted to prove to myself, that I could handle everything myself. All went OK , up until it was time to release and promote the first album. I was so overwhelmed by the insane amount of time, and money, it takes to just get your music out to where people may hear it. REAL ppl, not bots. Trying to find an audience is so much harder than I ever imagined. I had hoped to be able to help those who were in a similar situation as I was, for so many years..But, you cannot help anyone, if no one is listening. I almost gave it up, last summer, because as much as I like to shoot my own music videos, doing what u do: talking to the viewers,..I couldn't feel comfortable enough,to finish them out..
But, for what it's worth, you seem to inspire a lot of us out here, so hopefully that gives you some extra fuel to keep going.

One size does not fit all. We all have different brains. Some of us are more creative, some of us are more analytical.
I have somehow been blessed with a 50/50 brain, so creating and doing the business side of marketing is natural to me. Doesn’t mean it’s that way for everyone, but it’s almost effortless for someone like me.
    The downside?
I can never go full 100% on either. I can’t do what you are about to do. Cutting everything off and just making music would give me heightened levels of anxiety.
Conversely, just doing the business aspect would be the same. Balance is key. So I do envy that you are able to focus on one thing 100%
    Best of luck!

It's not abnormal to feel overwhelmed, there are lots and lots of methods to put yourself out there... And some might even say too many.
Looking at the comments and thinking for myself, it appears that whatever you put out, you have a great support group. Put out what feels good and the people will follow. Proof positive that you truly are "out there" and appreciated.

Brother Scott! Glad to see you man. I think we have all dealt with this to an extent. I know I certainly have. Sometimes the goals you set end up being your limitations. Then sometimes getting past those limitations turn back into goals. It’s a vicious cycle for sure! Sometimes being less calculated and take smaller bites is the best means to an end. I, and my band, have been trying to get our newest record done for the last year and a half. Constantly dealing with hurdles such as members coming and going, management issues, label issues etc. all while trying to run a business with my day job, trying to be a good father, friend and family member. Taking small bites before moving on to the next thing, then taking that on in small bites….so on and so forth. Concentrate on the most important things a little at a time. To hell with the timeline. Slow and steady wins the race. Love ya bro.

Even if you only have a 1,000 subscribers, that's actually a lot of people who are interested in what you're doing; you can't lose yourself in the fact that someone else has 4 million. If you can keep connecting with people in a real way, that's the most important thing.

“What’s on your tail, chasing you?” Only 30, (young in music years) been doing it my whole life. Never stayed put on one “thing”. now I realize you have to accept a reality of being creative, is art just something you enjoy and is good…or is it your *religion* for lack of a better term. It has depths of meaning. How you use it. Why you use it. Why you make it. Who you make it for. What change in your world does it create. Thanks for sharing.

Bunn!!!! Been waiting for some new stuff from ya dude. Glad to see you back.
Edit: after watching the whole thing I completely relate to so many of the things you mentioned, it sucks to feel like I need to keep up with the ever-evolving social media machine just to put out music I enjoy.

Thanks for the video man, it was a delight to see it. You’re a huge inspiration for me, and my band Banish. I started rehearsing with a full band after writing and recording a record with just my drummer a year and a half ago. We had goals of playing shows 6 months ago, and are just NOW starting to get 4/5 songs kind of tight. We are chipping away as we all have day jobs. Meanwhile I basically have another EP written and am eager to start to really carve out this next release. Thanks so much Bunn. Looking forward to more videos.

Dude, you do you whatever that means and however that works for you. You're the only artist/creator that I consistently love everything from both musically and content wise.

hey Bunn! That's actually a great decision! You simply decided to follow a great purpose that transcends being a collaborator in the attention economy. you just don't feed that monster anymore. 👏👏👏

Love your Wtlnds & Foreign music, I started watching your channel for the Baritone guitar content. Anytime I'm playing a game or doing some 3d designing I'll toss on your full catalog as a driving background soundtrack. I'd rather have you happy and putting out music rather than more videos. As much as I love the videos I don't want to see it burn someone out on the thing they obviously love.

your work is an inspiration man. Good to see you again as always. I'm close to almost being done with a 3 track EP (Been working on it since Jan of 2023 and thank you for the reminder that we just sometimes need to take our time with it. See you next month!

As someone who just started making content, I’ve always thought about your message as a cautionary tale. I def want my music to be in the spotlight, not me. This video is very helpful and affirms what I’ve been thinking already. I also know that you have to have spent countless hours editing all of that. Good lord, great production.

Stick with it dude! for me it helped to figure out WHY I'm doing what I'm doing. At the end of the day, as long as you're enjoying yourself with what you've created then that's all that matters.

    Great to see you bro!
Sometimes I feel like quitting everything. Then I remember that I don't have to decide.
I'm in a bit of a vacuum right now with my creativity. I'm sure I'll snap out of it eventually.

      Brother Kyro!
Yeah man, I know you get it. I think that there is something positive and productive in the highs and lows of being an artist. I feel like that for both of us, it's that energy, the big picture of life, that informs our art. I'm trying to make it all philosophical or anything... I just think it's that simple. And that it's healthy to endure periods of uncertainty and to constantly be questioning our motivations and experiences. Also, not related, time moves fast. I think it's already a year since our last call. We are due!
      Cheers!
      Bunn
