  • For the first time in 63 years, actors and writers are on strike at the same time, demanding better pay and job protection as streaming has upended film and TV production, and artificial intelligence threatens the livelihoods of writers and actors. Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with those on the frontlines of the picket lines.

The greed of corporations is out of control nowadays, you can work for a company making billions of dollars in profits yet never see a slightly increase in your pay. If you are thinking you are safe of this greed, you are not.

The incentive structures create these issues. The owners of these billion dollar companies always have to pander to the greed of wall street, their compensation depends on stock price and financial performance of the company. There is no incentive to do the "right" thing.

Sadly this video doesn’t go near enough into the plight of writers. Their average pay of writers before streaming was easily 100k per year. Now that pay has dropped to average of 60k per year. Given the cost of living in Hollywood that isn’t that much. Also the fact that instead of making pilot episodes, writers have to hope a script they worked on gets picked up. So imagine spending 8 hours to make a script per day. So 40 hours of work each week, but only get paid for 8 hours if you are lucky. Finally you have streaming services that will pull popular shows just so the streaming services don’t have to pay residuals.
Another fact is that the writers are not to blame for perceived low quality of shows and movies. They have to work within limits set by studio executives. Just like all corporate executives they tend to push DEI initiatives (which can be seen lately) as well as using low risks to try and get max profits. In the case of Hollywood it’s nostalgia and franchises that are generally lowest risk.

I had an experience with Motion Capture and voice acting and have to say even though gaming industry is a colossus these days, voice over actors and mo cap performers are not fully considered 'equal' talent as traditional actors. What's really interesting right now is that the mainstream, 'regular' actors demand royalties for their digital likeness when it's used on new projects they are not technically involved with. Something MoCap actors could relate to...I guess the movie studios figured that their 'creative accounting' and sometimes cruel contracts/ NDA's would go unnoticed into this new era of streaming. They were wrong, preparation is everything and they were completely ill prepared for this new platform of entertainment. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in the new Resident Evil games :

Furthermore many studios have their own streaming service, and if a film doesn't do well on theatrical release they have tools like writing down a film in their taxes, and they can recoup the costs of a movie in streaming and DVD sales because the studios will be around a long time to turn that negative profit movie into something profitable. The words to “have a creative idea” is not new. Now with AI, it’ll become routine practice. Our collective words written online, in text, spoken in our private times and recorded by APPS, makes it seamless.
It occurs with every voice recognition, recording OUR pattern of speech, regional, cultural dictation.
This is going to be constant battle. We’re being watched and recorded in so many ways.
And then they want to question why we’re flipping off cameras, and refusing face, fingerprint, or voice recognition software?!? Let US pray, and continue to be the watchdogs! Because writers reflect the societal worries, fears, nightmares, joy, hope and stories of the common man, not the profiteers. - ShanSol 71823

PS. You almost saw me as Leon in the new Resident Evil games

Let's not compare motion capture to AI. I'm an animator and never worked with motion capture, but I know many animators that have. It requires a collaboration between artists and actors to work. AI will work on its own and replace both jobs. It needs to be regulated.

Its America, winner take all - the rest get a few drops of trickle down. Its what Americans wanted because they though they were going to be winners too - wrong. It's actually a misnomer to say actors and writers are striking against producers. Producers actually support the strike. The Producers Guild recently issued a letter of solidarity. The strike is against the studios and networks and even people at the studios don't want this. The creative execs want to be creative. The people behind this are the people at the very very very top of each studio or network. The number crunchers. The non creatives. Those making millions and millions of dollars a year, living off the creatives. It's a bit rich hearing a CEO making 27 million a year saying it's unrealistic for actors to want to make a living wage. I guess that kind of privilige numbs a person to the needs of people who are just trying to live.

The great irony is that AI needs artists more than artists need AI. If you train AI continuously on AI generated content, it degrades and becomes rubbish. See Futurism’s article “AI Loses Its Mind After Being Trained on AI-Generates Data” and The Independent’s “Scientists warn of threat to Internet from AI-Trained AIs.” The original creators of the data that is used to train AI add the greatest value or, in economic jargon, provide the greatest value added. Yet Big Tech would like to pretend otherwise. So not only is this unethical, it’s shortsighted and could have disastrous consequences. It turns out doing the right thing (ensuring you get consent, giving credit where it’s due, and fairly compensating artists) would have also been the smart thing. AI companies need real visual artists, musicians, writers, actors, voice actors, etc. While most of us would be more than happy to go on without them. Furthermore, the majority of people do not want AI. It’s most fervent supporters are, predictably, the tech corporations ripping off artists and the public to take and profit from our data, which is all that makes AI valuable. The AI hype is just that-hype. It takes from the hard and excellent work of humans to generate lookalike or soundalike work. Nothing transformative about it.

myth: most actors & writers don't make bank. only 1% (famous ones) of that working force does. background actors, employeed writers, fill-ins, often get very little cuts of a show. prior to streaming, the cut was good enough to live off. Now with streaming, they do not get residual income for reruns either. They are seeing drastic decreases to their pay because the current contract doesn't cover streaming residuals. (only covers TV)
The rest of writers & actors are middle to low income workers. Yes, we all agree, Teachers also deserve better. EVERYONE deserve better. Wage stagnation is happening in every industry. Everyone SHOULD be striking. SAG & WGA are just bringing the issue to the forefront because they know they have the influence and power to do so. "The shows are going to be bad" the shows are bad right now, and unoriginal. I hope this strike fixes that.

The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike is the largest interruption to American television and film production since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, as well as the largest labor stoppage the WGA has performed since the last strike in 2007-08. Since July 14, 2023, it has coincided with a SAG-AFTRA strike as part of a broader Hollywood labor dispute. The hardest thing to change are people's minds. On July 12, 2023, Deadline Hollywood reported that the AMPTP and the major Hollywood studios did not plan to return to negotiations with the WGA until late October 2023 at the earliest. The studio executives who anonymously spoke with Deadline stated that by October, many writers would be financially strained, which they believed would allow them to be in a better position to dictate the terms of any new deal. Representatives for the AMPTP distanced themselves from the anonymous sources, claiming they remained committed to signing a deal as soon as possible.

I'm on your side Writers side! DAMN CEOs! As a consumer, you CEOs you are affecting consumers as well! I canceled my Netflix subscription! And I streamed on Netflix everyday! And I heard Eisnor Disney CEO. Well Disney is hurting! Hardly anyone is going to Disneyland! It is NOT the happiest place on earth! It's not fun there anymore anyway! Too many conditions on rides and restaurants! Anyway, THE WRITERS STAND YOUR GROUND!

Why do you think netflix only cost 7 $ a month. It happens to everyone tech, truck driver, oil and gas work. Nowadays you have to find job where dont have to re-invent yourself and its tuff.

Does this mean we might go a whole year without seeing some beloved piece of creativity from our past brought to the present, then brutally beaten and murdered in front of us?
