    I share a very similar story. From high school, did some cpa while teaching myself basic coding (I was writing code on a paper, then I would carry the paper to a cyber cafe and try it on notepad 🤣. I was coding in C). Went to JKUAT to do CS and was teaching at a secondary school back in my village in thika @5k too 😀. To top on the similarity, I'm also a competitive swimmer with several medals (learned this from river athi). First forward to now I am not yet in big tech, but am a senior SE at a pharma startup. All I can say about the journey is consistency, not giving up and always improving on what you learn. From writing code on paper, I am commenting on this using a descent, high-end laptop.

    I am a software engineer as well who is always encouraging people to learn. The best thing about software engineering is that you can switch to it from any other degree or even if you didn't go the university, you can still do self-study and become really good at it so that you can get employed in those big companies. What matters in software engineering most is the skills you have, and what you can do. In fact, someone who never went to the university but has a passion for learning can rise to the level of Senior Software Engineer above his colleagues who went to the university.

      Which langauages would you advice someone who is trying to get into software engineering

    • @dijitekst254
      @dijitekst254 Год назад +8

      @@flexfam3972 Those are the kind of questions I was asking myself when I was just starting out. If you ask me now, I would tell you that each programming language is important. Programming language is just a tool for implementing something. Take one programming language and go deep. Just dedicate yourself to that language and become a master in it. One mistake that many people starting out with programming do is to learn a little-bit of many programming languages and frameworks but master none. Nowadays, people like those guys who are really good at what they are doing. So, If you would like to become a web-developer, whether frontend or Backend, JavaScript is a MUST. For the backend, you may consider learning Python, GoLang, PHP. If you want to get into mobile app development, consider learning Java, Kotlin and/or Dart.
      For data science and machine leaning, Python , Julia, etc should be on your list.
      Once you understand the concepts of one language. It would be easier for you to learn any other language.

      No it’s not , the python language uses maths but it’s very basic mathematics. But so many languages don’t use maths , HTML, CSS , JAVASCRIPT, Reactjs, NodeJs…. The list is very long , don’t worry about maths just find projects on RUclips and build, build websites , apps anything you can do , so many videos available here in youtube. Checkout “freecodecamp” here on youtube they have so many videos to teach you different software languages, like the guy said in the video it’s just the consistency you need !

      RUclips has so many people who are building websites with coding languages , so also look at these sites on RUclips “brocode” , “netninja”, “webdevsimplified” “programming with mosh”

      a big part of software engineering does require maths. Not that what you used to get in maths matters, no, because you can develop what is required.
      that maths is just ability to solve a problem by breaking it down to steps that can be taken towards the solution.
      code is just adding and subtracting things, multiplying and dividing..repeating something a certain number of times, deciding whether to do something based on another ....all that is maths. basic maths.
      you may not even realize that you actually did a lot of maths

      @@DH-rf3nd typical focus on programming languages. Math is important in problem solving which is more important and harder than a programming language
