Oh my word, karma at its best! I inherited G999 PCD in 2002 when my mate passed away and left her to me. She was called 'Schwarzer Blitz' back then (not my doing). Owned her for a good few years after that, and she did feature briefly in the ClubGTI magazine, back when it was made of paper, while in my ward. We're still in GTI's, albeit mine's a 7.5, and my Wife's is a Polo. Kudos to the current owner - she looks in fine fettle. Coming across this video has just made my day; many happy memories 😎
That is so fantastic for you to have seen the car and recognised it. And what a lovely story. I've passed on your comment to the owner, which I think will please him somewhat. 😊
Hello! I am the current owner of G999 PCD and have been since 2008/9. It's still unofficially called 'Schwarzer Blitz' and sports the stickers, I even have the spares and templates amongst the comprehensive history which goes back to '89! I hope it brought you as much fun then as it does me now. If you want to get in touch please do, I'd love to learn about its past and catch you up on where it's been.
@@trigmk2 Yeah, that would be good. I'd know Blitz since 1994, and we were sad to let her go (just checked - 14/01/2008), but it was a case of needs must at the time. How best do we make contact outside of RUclips?
My heart always makes a big happy jump, when I see an MK2. Have 2 on my own and I just love this car. Hopefully I can make a roadtrip with year, too. Greetings from Germany!
Love that fact you get so happy when you see a Mk2. You'd have been in your element with this cruise, having 20 cars in attendance. Any cruises will be published on our Facebook group, so feel free to join that and you'd be welcome to any future events if you're prepared to hop across the channel. 🙂
Thank you so much. Wouldn't have been possible without the likes of yourself in attendance, and of course helping with some of the footage. Here's to the next one!
Greetings to you in Mexico from here in the UK. Glad you liked all the Golfs. Yes the BBS wheels are very popular here. Some also run the B-Star RA wheel, which is a 16" modern version, which is proving a popular restomod.
Haha that made me laugh! We certainly were drawing some attention by passers by. You'll notice the white Land Rover beeped his horn when he saw us filming with the drone near the viaduct. He was very excited to see all the cars!
Hi I’m based in essex and have a 1990 met black gti 16v with a TSR 1.9 with Quaiffe LSD, not long had it but would love to do a meet up. Maybe next time
Certainly would love to meet you and see your car, of course! Join our Facebook group (South East Mk2 Golfs) if you haven't already as we organise all of our meets and events through there.
I remember we bought our first Mk2 in 2007 and they were still everywhere. In the UK there have been a number of scrappage schemes where old cars are encouraged to be scrapped in favour of purchasing a new car and that unfortunately killed loads of them off. Not sure if anything similar in America happened? I travelled to Connecticut in 2010 and again, there were a number of Jettas spotted and a handful of Golfs, but when we went to New York in 2014 I didn't see one.
@@golfmk2 Not sure if we had anything like that happen. I think the harsh winters in the north east of the USA has killed a lot of older cars with rust. Especially euro cars for some reason. I bought my 16v 9a GTI in 2014 and get offers to buy it every time I take it out. Its crazy really.
Yeah your winters are a bit harsher than ours. The whole country grinds to a halt in the event of 2 inches of snow and they'll put lorry loads of salt/grit down which wrecks these old (and new) cars. I bet people go mad for your car when they see it! Didn't realise the Golf 16v was fitted with the 9a engine in the USA. That engine was only fitted in the Corrado and I believe the Passat (I may be mistaken.)
@@golfmk2 It's the same here. The salt is horrible. Unfortunately we didn't get the KR here so the 9a is what they gave us instead. Overall its a good motor. Still original and running strong. Although the kjet always seems like its trying to die on me lol. Most of the mk2 I see at shows are VR5 or VR6 swapped but I love the way the 16v sounds and feels.
There's something special about the way a 16v revs and drives which cannot be matched by VR or the 1.8t (as so commonly carried out in the UK). The 9a is a very good engine still, so understandable why its used in the USA. Wonder if that's because of the petrol (gasoline) you have? In the UK its 95RON at a minimum, yet I remember seeing 88RON, up to 98RON when I was there those years ago, so I can imagine the extra capacity offsets the difference in fuel?
Yeah it was a great day out. Loved it! That's interesting about the VHS plate. I'd not know how to find out where these plates originated from. How can you find it out?
Ah what a shame! Yeah it was a great event and the cars all performed faultlessly. Keep an eye out for the next one and hopefully you can jump on board. Thank you for the kind words regarding the content. Means a lot. ☺️
I have three VW MK1 Scirocco’s here in Southern California. Two 1981 “S” Models, Mars Red,and Silver Blue metallic, both run very well. The other is a standard 1980 Forest Green Scirocco, this one I’ll have repainted, and put back together soon. I rescued all three about 10 years. 👍🏻👍🏻
That's fantastic. I do like a Scirocco, especially a Mk1, which is very rare (and cool) in the UK. A friend of mine had one and it was beautiful. With the incredibly hot South California sun, how does the paintwork hold up?
Glad you enjoyed the video. With regards to the one in 10 million, this was a special edition in 1988, where there were 1500 examples made. 500 in Swartz Black, 500 in Helios Blue and 500 in Oak Green. Of each 500, 250 were 8v GTI and 250 were 16v GTI. As you can imagine, there's not many examples left. Do you have an Oak Green yourself?
Nice video Ali, looks to have been a great day with a nice MK2 turnout. Also great to see a couple of MK2 Sirocco's in there too, my old one looked just like the one that overtook you.
Yeah was a fantastic day. Great cars, people, roads, locations and weather so couldn't have asked for more. Yeah the Scirocco is running an Audi S3 lump and is pretty rapid! Would certainly give our R32 Mk2 a run for its money! The owner literally dragged out from a year of storage and brought it, moss and cobwebs and all! 🤣 That Corrado was a VR6 Storm too, so a nice rare one.
@@golfmk2 That Corrado STORM looked stunning and was the exact car I was looking for back in the early 2000's. I viewed only ONE storm in over three months of searching. It was cheap but it had covered a lot of miles and clearly wasn't very well cared for, and needed a lot of work, so I walked. I considered taking on another 5 pot quattro but in the end took a completely different direction and bought a much newer Fiat Coupé 20V turbo, in Green with Tan leather, a car I kept for many years!
They were considered expensive when new, but their values are remaining low enough for retro car enthusiasts to still be able to afford one, compared to a Ford of the equivalent age.
@@golfmk2 you can still find lots of them in Balkan area. Most of them are on last legs. Because people who driving them are poor, and they are driving them with minimal maintenance. Excellent work horses with minimal maintenance. During Balkan civil wars people put transformer cooling oil in reservoirs of diesel ones and they still worked. Now they would be thousand and one light on dash board with new vehicles.
The route was over 100 miles (160km) so would have been near half a tank of petrol for most of the cars. They do like to drip oil on the roads, but hopefully not too much!
