Why Xbox is Publishing on Switch

  • Microsoft is publishing former Xbox exclusive titles on Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation. Why? Well, it's complicated.
Although, yes, Because Money. We all know that.
Microsoft has not had the success that they've been hoping for with the Xbox Series consoles, nor with Xbox Game Pass. Neither the console nor the subscription service has reached as wide a consumer base as Microsoft had been hoping for, and that means that the company has had to temper their expectations a little with regards to their position within the gaming industry.
This being the case, and following on from successful trials of publishing games like Cuphead and Ori and the Blind Forest on Switch and PlayStation, Microsoft has opted to expand their efforts slightly to include four other generally popular games that, admittedly, aren't the largest AAA titles that Microsoft has access to.
This is no bad thing, considering that Grounded and Pentiment are both tremendously solid games which will feel like a very natural inclusion among the Nintendo Switch lineup - Pentiment in particular feels perfect for handheld gaming on a low-power device.
00:00 Xbox on Switch and Playstation
01:20 Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, Pentiment (aka "This Aged Like Milk")
02:52 Chapter One: The Lonely Exclusives
06:56 Chapter Two: A Numbers Game
15:33 Chapter Three: The Oncoming Blizzard
    Lots of love,

From what I recall hi-fi rush has some alpha effects in it which have without fail made switch performance drop like a rock even in basic wii game ports. Considering it relies on a smooth 60 fps to keep rhythm it's no wonder they skipped the switch if it couldn't handle the game.

the other reason for that 2020 quote is: Apple and Google are the only ones who can actually compete with MS$. The fact that they failed miserably (at least in the core gaming space) it just giving MS$ the default victory. if gaming goes away from MS$, it'd be a hit, but MS$ would be fine in general. On the other side if you take gaming away from Sony would be disastrous and Nintendo would cease to exist

A shorter comment than my previous comment on this video.
Phil Spencer hating exclusives is a sign of PC's ongoing war against Nintendo's Consoles.
The King of Exclusives is Nintendo with their immortal time-tested IP.
Microsoft was able to get Sony to play a game of Chicken with them & force Sony into a money race against Microsoft.
Billions will never beat Trillions & the AAA Graphics race was PC propaganda all along.
But they can't easily influence Nintendo which can supply itself with its own games & sustain itself purely upon them.
So getting Sony to move over to PC took time but it was easier than getting Nintendo to do the same.
Nintendo avoided the AAA Graphics race & looks poised to be stronger than ever before.
Nintendo even held off the attack from Tablet PC better known to you as Mobile when Apple & Google ganged up on them.
Microsoft is still playing the Embrace mode of its Embrace, Extend, Extinguish central strategy with Nintendo but they are beginning to move into the Extend part now. Palworld's sudden emergence on Gamepass attacking Pokémon IP complete with a Korean XBox saying "Go Catch Them All' is a sign that they are preparing to attack Nintendo.
So now the propaganda will move further into delegitimizing the Exclusives that are Nintendo's & the Console Market's bread & butter. AAA already compromised Sony so now it's time to compromise the other big Console entity, Nintendo.
In fact, attacking Nintendo is attacking the CORE of the Console Market itself. Nintendo is why Consoles still exist.
But I REALLY don't think Microsoft is ready for Nintendo's wrath.
Look what they did to Sony after Sony tried to come for the Handheld Console market. Ran Sony all the way out of Japan!
Nintendo is SMALL but DEADLY & so many others have found this out the hard way.
Microsoft is a Trillion-dollar company but for Nintendo it's beyond money. Nintendo is a Giant Killer.
Almighty Apple couldn't disrupt them so what makes Microsoft think they can do any different.
The FC will defeat the PC AGAIN just like it did in the 1980s. Family Computer vs. Personal Computer.
Nintendo's Consoles will overcome ANYTHING from the PCs in ANY form.
Does Microsoft really want this smoke? Does Microsoft want to be run out of gaming altogether?
Check the online pic from 1996 with Microsoft's Bill Gates playing a game of Go with Nintendo's Hiroshi Yamauchi.
Yamauchi was a high-level Go player. I bet dollars to doughnuts Bill Gates lost that game.
Microsoft will lose it again if they try to dislodge Nintendo with these tactics.
    Nintendo Ninjas? Try Nintendo Shoguns.

I've been saying from day 1 that Nintendo is ruthless. That is why in Japan they call them the Hanafuda YAKUZA. Yakuza in English means Mafia.

@d1 I'm glad somebody else sees it. People take Nintendo lightly because it's a smaller company.
But it's a small company with an outsized influence. It's like the ants that can carry 100 times their weight.
Or better still it's like a wolverine or honey badger. And we KNOW they don't give a 'BLEEP'.
Nintendo has pulled off a Jedi mind trick on this industry. They transcended the competition.
So people don't see them as direct competition like FTC & CMA regulatory bodies when they excluded Nintendo from the conversation on console market share between Sony & Microsoft.
The so-called "high-end" console market. Hahahahaha. Nintendo BENEFITS from this setup.
They LOVE that Sony & Microsoft fight it out in this Red Ocean of blood.
Check this quote from Shigeru Miyamoto in 2006 as the Wii was preparing to launch.
*Shigeru Miyamoto: "The consensus was that power isn't everything for a console.*
*Too many powerful consoles can't coexist. It's like having only ferocious dinosaurs.*
*They might fight and hasten their own extinction."*
So many people interpreted that as a statement of avoidance or fear. Nintendo was too weak to compete.
The truth of it was that it was their design that the other 2 kill themselves like the dinosaurs.
Nintendo transcended them because they were the mammals that knew the dinosaurs' fate.
Nintendo is a LONG-TERM PLANNER. The competition has no idea how Nintendo sets them up to fail.
I can never forget when Sony's Kaz Hirai talked about Nintendo Handhelds as the "Handheld Gaming Ghetto".
EVERYBODY thought PSP would run DS & put Nintendo in a fate like Sega. 3rd Party.
Nintendo TROUNCED those guys & when it came time for the successor with 3DS vs. Vita...
...Nintendo killed Sony in the crib by ripping Monster Hunter from them! Final Fantasy VII-like reversal!
And that one move forced Sony to focus on the PS4 in the battle of "The West" with XBox One & drop the Vita thus dropping Japan altogether. Wii U collapsed but 3DS was strongest in Japan so 3DS was upheld most.
Now as Switch does what Wii U intended making the Home Handheld Console or Hybrid Console, Sony is irrelevant in Japan & poisoned by their quest to rule "The West" over Microsoft.
Nintendo made 2 moves to create this outcome. Just 2.
Trouncing the PSP with DS & taking Monster Hunter from Vita. And with that they killed Sony in Japan.
And you cannot win a console war without winning Japan. Nintendo made it that way in 1985.
PS4 was thought to be the champion of the 8th Gen but that title is now with the Switch.
So Nintendo EVEN beat Sony's STRONG POINT!! ABSOLUTELY DEVIOUS!!
You have to look at this set of quotes from Hiroshi Yamauchi, the President of Nintendo that made them the force they are today. Satoru Iwata was a force in his own right but he was trained by Yamauchi.
Iwata was the kinder gentler version but BOTH Iwata & Yamauchi were in sync on Nintendo strategy.
It's a collection of quotes from different eras of gaming but look at how this lines up with current events.
      It's from r/nintendo & it's titled *"Hiroshi Yamauchi's Quotes: A Look at Nintendo's Former President"*
I once thought Nintendo's idea to go Blue Ocean started with Iwata but Yamauchi showed signs of setting up this strategy further back than I realized. Bill Gates met up Yamauchi in the mid 1990s so Yamauchi may have suspected his intentions & prepared the company to steer in a safe direction for the future.
Microsoft does not know what they're dealing with. Nintendo laughed at them in the N64 days.
Today's Nintendo is MUCH stronger than they were then. So I hope Phil Spencer & the gang don't get too smug thinking they can force Nintendo into a hostile takeover situation like that secret e-mail showed.
If you come for Nintendo's livelihood, THEY WILL DESTROY YOU. Make no mistake about it.
I believe every word you said about Japan calling Nintendo the Hanafuda Yakuza.
And the way Nintendo does stuff, they set it up long-term where you don't even realize it's them doing it at all.
They take you apart piece by piece & the world says the company just fell apart somehow.
They have the cover of plausible deniability but trust & believe it's all by their hands.
This is the company who snubbed giant Sony IN PUBLIC in the early 1990s! They fear NO ONE.

The reason why XBox is putting games on Nintendo Switch is because XBox is going 3rd Party.
The reason why XBox is going 3rd Party NOW all of a sudden can be found by studying XBox's origin.
What even IS an XBox? Why did Microsoft put XBox on the market? What was the goal of the XBox? Why is it X?
*The XBox means the DirectX Box.* The Box was the physical container for Microsoft's DirectX interface.
But what is DirectX & why did Microsoft feel they had to make a Box to contain it?
Read the following to know the origin of *Project Midway (DirectX Box)* & *The Manhattan Project (DirectX).*
When Nintendo took command of the Videogame Industry with Family Computer/Nintendo Entertainment System after the Crash of 1983, they shifted the Capital of the Industry from America where it all began to Japan where it still rests today.
The Famicom/NES destroyed the PC Videogame market because the Videogame Console that Nintendo represented was more accepted by the public than the Personal Computers that American developers represented.
As the 1983 Crash was going on, the remaining American developers/publishers shifted focus to the PCs.
But Nintendo changed history & soon PC game makers were forced to put their games on Console to remain viable.
Other Console makers tried to beat Nintendo at their own game & by the 1990s Japanese Consoles were the dominant platforms in the entire industry. If it wasn't Nintendo, it was Sega or NEC or SNK.
If you ignored these platforms, you limited your ability to make hit games, make impact on culture, & uphold your business.
By the mid-1990s, Microsoft emerged as the dominant PC entity.
The Apple board of directors ousted co-founder Steve Jobs in 1985 which eventually led to Microsoft taking over.
In the midst of this Japanese-ness, ANOTHER Japanese entity was soon to make its mark & it was the biggest of them all.
Sony, the Multimedia/Electronics giant, was coming with their PlayStation after the public breakdown with Nintendo.
Sony was in an expansionist mode buying up movie studios, music companies, & TV companies. Gaming was next.
It's one thing for those previous Japanese companies to control gaming but Sony could very well create a computer of their own as well as an operating system to run it. If Sony ever took root, Microsoft's business would not sustain.
Sony was not a natural game maker with their roots being in Audio/Video so they searched for existing PC developers alongside existing Japanese Arcade/Console developers to help build their soon-coming PlayStation empire.
They were going to build a 3rd Party-centric platform to oppose Nintendo's 1st Party-centric platform.
Sony's Videogaming branch was once called *Sony COMPUTER Entertainment* after all.
And the 'COMPUTER' in the name showed Microsoft that they were a threat to their business.
Gaming was one of the hooks to buying a computer & thus Microsoft's programs so Sony had to be stopped at all costs.
Enter the DirectX. Alex St. John, one of the 3 creators of DirectX, said in interviews that DirectX was designed to uproot Japanese influence & reassert American/European influence through this DirectX interface.
DirectX in its mildest sense was to dislodge Japanese Consoles & entrench the Microsoft Windows PC.
But when you look at the codename for DirectX-The Manhattan Project-you get a sense that this went deeper than business.
A World War II reference like that (The Manhattan Project was the codename for the Atomic Bomb that devastated Japan's Hiroshima & Nagasaki) showed animosity over 'foreigners' running what was once primarily an American/European-run industry. This resentment had been building ever since Nintendo changed the direction of the industry in the 1980s.
Now young kids were being exposed to different cultural values & began to emulate them.
*So to stop this process, it was time to metaphorically "Bomb The Japanese" again.*
And another clue to this mindset is seen in XBox's trademark color of Bright Green.
The original DirectX logo was supposed to be the Radiation Symbol in Radioactive Green but Microsoft PR intervened so the DirectX team put an extra prong on it turning the 3-prong symbol into a 4-prong symbol now looking a letter 'X'.
Even with this change, the same mindset stayed intact. X is a Crosshair so a *DirectX* is a *Direct Hit* from the Atomic Bomb.
And Direct Hit they did. Sega's Dreamcast from 1998 ran with Windows & its DirectX interface & soon they were gone.
Project Midway (a World War II reference to the Battle of Midway) was coming as the DirectX Box or XBox.
Fighting off Nintendo & Sony was already bad enough after the turmoil from the Sega Saturn. But they DEFINITELY would have been finished in the market once XBox came along so they exited the Console making business & went 3rd Party.
*But was Microsoft's goal with the XBox designed to sell the most consoles in the market? NO.*
*XBox was ALWAYS designed to be a stalking horse to move everything over to the Windows PC & kill Japanese Consoles.*
Once you accept their ways & their programs, Microsoft goes into its natural mode: *Embrace, Extend, Extinguish.*
Sony took the bait & each generation they moved exactly where Microsoft wanted them to move win, lose, or draw.
IT DIDN'T MATTER that PlayStation beat XBox in a generation. XBox's "failures" were never failures.
Sony was moving away from its "Eastern" Japanese side & moving closer to the "Western" American/European side.
And once Sony is dependent on "The West" & its American/European developers, they would be dependent on Windows PC.
Microsoft's "incompetence" with the XBox is by design. They play a game of positioning with Sony.
Sony was always 3rd Party-centric & once Microsoft's plan to get them into a money race of AAA Graphics was complete, Microsoft could go in for the kill. This was seen in these major buyouts of Bethesda & Activision-Blizzard.
XBox's failures against PlayStation made it easier to get past the regulators & seal the deal.
So once Sony was stuck & was forced to put games on PC to stay viable, Microsoft won its original aim with DirectX.
With that done, why stick around with Console Hardware? The name is MicroSOFT as in Software.
That is why they are now going 3rd Party as a Mega-Publisher.
The only miscalculation they made was not realizing the source of the Japanese influence.
Sony was not the source. Nintendo was. But it's hard to influence 1st Party Nintendo like they did Sony with its 3rd Party.
Microsoft remains in Embrace mode with Nintendo for now trying to find a way into Nintendo's impenetrable fortress.
*But this has ALWAYS been a war between PC & FC. Personal Computers & Family Computers.*
Nintendo of America is surrounded by Microsoft's headquarters on all sides in Redmond, Washington.
It's not a stretch to wonder if Nintendo & Microsoft were working together all along to dislodge Sony.
Sony's presence in Japan has evaporated which helps Nintendo & Sony's dependent on PC which helps Microsoft.
But who's ultmately playing who? Is Microsoft playing Nintendo? Or is Nintendo playing Microsoft?
There's a picture online from the 1990s with Microsoft's Bill Gates playing a game of Go with Nintendo's Hiroshi Yamauchi.
Yamauchi was a high-level Go player. And Nintendo is an inherent game/toy/card company.
One day to Microsoft's chagrin, they will realize that it was Nintendo that put the Direct Hit on THEM.

First you say Microsoft is losing the console war and then you say that Microsoft is a monopoly and we all should be very worried. Which one is it??
To anyone that has a little business sense or economics background this should be obvious, but allow me to explain my side of the argument. Monopolies are not real. They only exist when the government gives companies exclusivity agreements and whatnot.
Second point. In order for Microsoft to become a monopoly in the gaming industry they would have to completely out buy Nintendo, Sony, Tencent, Ubisoft, EA,Epic Games, Steam, etc. Even with its trillion dollar valuation, there’s no way that Microsoft does this. If a company is valued at a trillion dollars it doesn’t mean they have that trillion in cash. The market is vibrant and lush with competition so I think we’re safe from the thing this guy fears the most.
No Microsoft is not a monopoly and there’s no way they become one. And yes they are losing the console war.
