Thank you for so many free pattern recommendations. I think I've found my favorite sewing mag: Peppermint. Great graphic design, writing and thorough instructions even for free patterns.
I have made the Peppermint Patterns pinafore. Honestly, it's one of the best projects I have ever made. I don't think it would have turn out as good if it weren't for the thorough instructions, which was a nice surprise as I have had some bad experiences with free patterns having subpar instructions.

You are right - they have a pay what you like scale ranging from $0 to $20. They only introduced this a few months ago I think. Before then the patterns were all free with no scales of donations.

Mood fabrics have some subpar instructions for sure. I am adding the pinafore to my to do list!
