The oil smells and tastes drastically different even if it is from the same plant and the tree/crop, it all depends on the refinement and the method of extractions. Cold pressed unrefined oil leaves much scent of the actual fruit itself, but it’s not always good as it goes rancid quickly for many seeds/kernels. And it is irritating to sensitive skin if it’s cold pressed as these unsaponifiables in the oil become irritant to the skin as topical application. And eating and applying on the skin, the best type of oil would be normally different. For eating, unrefined is more flavorful, and for skin, some refinement and deodorizing process are necessary as it can irritate skin and the scent can be overwhelming (for example cocoa butter, it’s extremely overpowering to apply unrefined cocoa butter directly on skin, and it’s almost never used alone).

I don't know what information I've been looking at, or what kind of Argan Oil I've been using, but it's not expensive at all. I mean, there are some expensive brands out there, but you're paying for the name. You can get pure Argan Oil at the health food store for like $8.
Why is it that much expensive? 300$.We have in our rural area and people buy just for 10$ and the best thing is I know it is a good quality and handmade so don't need to get it from those big fake brands.
These vids should be titled, "why is ____ so expensive in the US?" Everytime I watch these videos, it makes me realize that most of these products only became expensive because the West charged their customers too much by marketing it as something "exotic".
I get it that it takes a lot of effort to make it. but what makes it so special compared to the substitutes? if not, then there is no reason to pay for that outrageous price.
The oil is so expensive but it's so sad to see the hard working women are being paid so less. This is not at all acceptable. They must be paid what they deserve. Farmers are always in loss.
Then cooperatives would just switch to using machines and these women would make nothing while technicians and engineers from the city, young men usually, would make a respectable salary. Would that be preferable?
@@simomimo-t4u No, cutting out the middleman would be preferable because then the money would come directly to the cooperative and the ladies themselves. I'm sure this is possible to do with creative solutions to satisfy all parties' concerns
They should pay these women more. It’s doesn’t make sense that they only get 200 dollar a month when a bottle of the oil cost about 100 dollars or more.
Like go to loreal and sell their argan oils??? Or just hit the market with bottles of argan and let the ppl create their own hair oils and moisturizers?? Get urself a brain kiddo
The question is not whether they are capable of export, most middle men create pressures. You just can't supply without them. They will disrupt your business if you try to. Middlemen can only extort so much commission with their thug like pressure without doing much work
So something doesn't add up. Up to $300 a litre. 2-3 hours to make a litre. Morrocan women make $220 a month. We're missing data on how many litres are produced a month, but it seems like the middle men are profiteering from Argan Oil, not the cooperative.
Yoo Mo Ron I think the biggest aspect in the low wages is the traditional role of women. They weren’t given freedoms but conversely the men are expected to provide for them entirely. Thus you’re left with a group of workers that don’t rly fight for higher wages.
One of the most outrageous topics that exists. Born and raised in Morocco, Argan oil is part of our traditional beauty routine, but it suddenly became so "special" when the international beauty market laid eyes on it. 😏 Big brands, big cosmetics companies buying the Argan oil for the same price as locals and individuals to use a tiny bit of it in their products and sell them for an expensive price. The consumer is the only one who can change such reality by only buying from Moroccan beauty brands or individual locals. 🙏🏼 Spread awareness.
@@riyaelizabethgeorge7914 most of the coperatives have websites where they display all the Argan oil products and their prices. They are also available to answer the phone for better communication.
The women of Africa make shea butter by hand .it takes more than 24 hours and they get paid less than these women. Both countries need a union for these womenn!
its not that theyre selling something valuable and theyre getting scammed, theyre selling to a group that doesnt demand much of the product, who then re-sell it to a group that demands more. the women can benefit from the high consumer demand by selling directly to consumers, but to do that theyd have to form a business instead of a cooperative. theyd have to specialize roles and automate the production process so that can work faster and produce more product, then theyd have to conglomerate with other companies and expand internationally.
I don't know how much they're getting paid but just because it looks like a small amount in the west, it doesn't mean that it's a small amount in Africa (it depends on the country but still) , cost of living is very different

That’s not true. I’m a Moroccan from the Netherlands and I buy Argan oil in Morocco every year, all over the country. Argan oil is very expensive, even in Morocco. Maybe you bought a mixed product.

As a Moroccan myself I can't afford Argan oil because it's too expensive and that's really making me sad! This oil is really beneficial for both hair and skin. It's not too greasy like olive oil and it really moistures my skin. I really love it and I'm afraid it gets more expensive in the future.
@@leilabounane5560 First at least reply in such a cool manner! Second it may be not expensive for you but as I said it's expensive for me SO I DIDNT GENERALIZE IT 🙂
Traditional Moroccan argan oil is made from the poop of goats who have eaten argan fruit. The seeds aren’t digested when the goats eat the fruit, so they are eventually pooped out, collected by locals.
@@Alias_Anybody If anyone worked wrist deep in vegetable oil all day they wouldn't have wrinkles either, oil is oil, theres nothing special about argan oil its just the new unobtainium of the beauty industry, they used to use peanut oil before it came out it gave babies nut allergies when they were being doused in baby oil.
This oil only exists in Morocco alone and wasn't known for the rest of the world till lately. Moroccan women used to use it as a beauty product for decades and it's a part of their cultural heritage.
@@masteroogway6660 do some research before writing nonsense. Each oil is given a number according to its property/ability to clog skin pores. Oils that are high or even in the middle of the scale (4-9) shouldn't be used on the skin too often. Also, oils with high amounts of protein (for an oil), like coconut oil, can dry your skin if you use it too often. However, argan oil is the only (or almost only) oil that has a 0-1 on that scale and doesn't have too much protein (for an oil). And that's why it's so goid for your skin. Also, different oils have different chemical and physical properties regardless of this scale (such as crystal structure, which is one of the most important properties of anything - diamond, pure coal, and graphite are all completely the same chemically, but have different crystal structures, and look at the difference it makes). And maybe actually try real argan oil. You clearly haven't, because if you had, you'd see the difference even without knowing the chemistry and physics behind it. It soaks right into your skin, leaving it moist instead of oily. The same if you put it on your hair. Especally for us curly haired and tan skinned people. I've tried literally all oils, none of them were good, except argan oil. The rest of them would just make my skin and hair oily and dry it up in the long term
Yes like a mercedes factory worker make billions of dollars just because that is the sum of the industry?? Come on its about margins demand etc. Every developed country used to have simpler standards of living until technology and capital was built up.
Take a look at chocolate and coffee too. The farmers and laborers are paid far too little. Climate change has impacted growing areas, so some coffee farmers are struggling to find and afford new places to grow it.
Some to the company that designs the squeezing machines, some to the trucking companies that drive it from warehouse to warehouse, some to the shipping companies that transport it internationally, some to the cosmetic manufacturers, some to the marketing teams keeping demand up, some to the retailers for stocking the product. And a little bit to the people picking up the fruit as it falls to the ground. Maybe some go into bribes to custom officials, or to pharmaceutical regulators. Regardless a product like this has a huge supply chain where everyone is extracting profit.
What I just heard at the end there was its a cooperative of women, working for women and with women making the most expensive edible oil in the world... a product mainly used by women and in women's cosmetics aaaaand they make less than the recommended minimum wage in morocco... how did you screw that one up?
Because the cosmetic corporates came sent in the "researchers" and "cosmologists" to convince them to work and make money. To them earning $5 a month is an unheard of thing. But the to giants selling products containing a fraction of the products is sold for insane amounts of money to North American women who are vain AF. So really the used women to take advantage of women, because money...
@@navataru uhhhh in case you weren't watching it wasnt the researchers or cosmologists who started it... they themselves did. A woman from Morocco did the research and started the cooperative. The idea was based on women banding together for equality in the work force. To stick it to the men of what once was a patriarchal society. They make more than $5 a month... but make less than the national suggested minimum wage. They had a golden opportunity to show the world what a woman co-op could do---- in a third world country no less!!! And the screwed the pooch. They showed the world women do it to themselves and eachother. They are no better than men. Its not the "patriarchy".
@@jeffklaubo3168 my response wasn't to be statistically accurate or anything. Rather an analogous way of saying the industry reaps the reward because they can get away with paying the workers so little. It's that very greed that tries to advantage of everyone whenever possible.
@@navataru ok..well if you watched this video... this very core group of women.this co-op are the whole reason there is a market for argan oil. They created the market. Nothing you can say will change the fact, they had a golden goose and killed it before it could lay an egg.

Argan oil is known to be one of the rarest, hence most expensive oils in the world. Pure, original argan oil is hard to obtain and production is time-consuming, thereby its price is high. Not all Argan Oil on the market is real and pure as many so called producer may diluted it, just to make it cheaper
Just buy USDA organic if you’re buying from the US, and likewise federally regulated labels for other countries. If you’re buying it at a “steal” price its likely diluted, but too high of a price isn’t a good thing either. It’s the same precautions you have to take with coconut oil. If you want to be 100% safe, buy it from a food aisle.
In my country they mixed it almond oil, yet even like that is better than almond oil alone, in my country almond oil is very cheap, and cononut oil was evencheaper until they label it as magical, the prices skyrocket, no longer buy coconut oil.
When I visited Morocco, one of my stops was to see the women make the Argan oil, as I love traditional making methods. It was just as I had imagined it to be, the women sitting in the shade goats and trees, it was beautiful, then we were ushered to the retail shop by the tourist guide and I remember thinking what a contrast, the shop was just like something back in London (flashy packaging). I have to admit it didn’t sit right with me, although I still bought in the hopes that the women did benefit from their labour, it was many years ago and I still have the bottle. I hope the women make a strong stand, protect their land and their efforts. Big brands show themselves again, their exploitation so so braising!
I really appreciate the scientist who went out there to conduct the study on the benefits of argan oil and went forth to educate the women about the business of oil production and marketing. Not all heroes wear capes!
I went into an Argan woodworking shop when I went to Morocco. The smell of Argan wood is so wonderful. I bought some small wooden items which still faintly smell like Argan wood to this day. I was in Morocco for almost a month and it was a great experience.
Miriam Lalramhmangaihsangi it can treat almost anything! Argan has many health benefits. Its known for centuries. My grandfather is from that region. They ate it every day and people from that region have a much lower cancer rate than the rest of the country. They didn't even had a word for cancer because it was almost non existant in that part of the country.

No birthdates where registered back than, so we don't know exactly how old he was, but he was around 120 years old when he died. So your assumption because the average lifespan was alot lower than today is because the lived shorter doesn't really add up. These vids should be titled, "why is ____ so expensive in the US?" Everytime I watch these videos, it makes me realize that most of these products only became expensive because the West charged their customers too much by marketing it as something "exotic".
I get it that it takes a lot of effort to make it. but what makes it so special compared to the substitutes? if not, then there is no reason to pay for that outrageous price.
pretty amazing this channel is "why (insert subject) is so expensive."
The oil is so expensive but it's so sad to see the hard working women are being paid so less. This is not at all acceptable. They must be paid what they deserve. Farmers are always in loss.
$150 hour is not bad. But just really doubt that women knows how much someone is getting rich on her hardwork.
For all those women to be paid so little for an industry that's worth so much is ridiculous. Pay these ladies what they're worth.
It's always the same old thing and I don't see it changing anytime what a shame.
Thats the world either get used to it or get silenced

The question is not whether they are capable of export, most middle men create pressures. You just can't supply without them. They will disrupt your business if you try to. Middlemen can only extort so much commission with their thug like pressure without doing much work
here in morocco you can get a good quality argan oil for 20-30$ per l
So something doesn't add up.
Up to $300 a litre.
2-3 hours to make a litre.
Morrocan women make $220 a month.
We're missing data on how many litres are produced a month, but it seems like the middle men are profiteering from Argan Oil, not the cooperative.
RamboSan I doubt a 100% of Morrocan women work on argan oil, and they said it takes a woman 24hrs per litre.
Yeah it seems the university is profiting off it
Yoo Mo Ron I think the biggest aspect in the low wages is the traditional role of women. They weren’t given freedoms but conversely the men are expected to provide for them entirely. Thus you’re left with a group of workers that don’t rly fight for higher wages.

Big brands, big cosmetics companies buying the Argan oil for the same price as locals and individuals to use a tiny bit of it in their products and sell them for an expensive price.
The consumer is the only one who can change such reality by only buying from Moroccan beauty brands or individual locals. 🙏🏼 Spread awareness.

its not that theyre selling something valuable and theyre getting scammed, theyre selling to a group that doesnt demand much of the product, who then re-sell it to a group that demands more.
the women can benefit from the high consumer demand by selling directly to consumers, but to do that theyd have to form a business instead of a cooperative. theyd have to specialize roles and automate the production process so that can work faster and produce more product, then theyd have to conglomerate with other companies and expand internationally.

Traditional Moroccan argan oil is made from the poop of goats who have eaten argan fruit.
The seeds aren’t digested when the goats eat the fruit, so they are eventually pooped out, collected by locals.
I wish they would’ve talked about the molecular structure of the oil and why is it so good at moisturizing...

i know, but i think the show only centers around the economics of the product.

Regardless a product like this has a huge supply chain where everyone is extracting profit.
brand packaging and marketing.
Argan oil is known to be one of the rarest, hence most expensive oils in the world. Pure, original argan oil is hard to obtain and production is time-consuming, thereby its price is high. Not all Argan Oil on the market is real and pure as many so called producer may diluted it, just to make it cheaper
If it was produced in Morocco i Assure you it will be Pure.
Mouad Mo!! That attitude is dangerous. Research for yourself, ignorance is bliss!
It's pretty cheap here in Morocco though
Just buy USDA organic if you’re buying from the US, and likewise federally regulated labels for other countries. If you’re buying it at a “steal” price its likely diluted, but too high of a price isn’t a good thing either. It’s the same precautions you have to take with coconut oil. If you want to be 100% safe, buy it from a food aisle.
In my country they mixed it almond oil, yet even like that is better than almond oil alone, in my country almond oil is very cheap, and cononut oil was evencheaper until they label it as magical, the prices skyrocket, no longer buy coconut oil.
