  • In episode 3 of 2019 Arizona Coues Deer, Randy Newberg and longtime friend Jerry Pritchard are down to their last day of the hunt. They have to make it happen today if they are going to fill a tag on a public land Coues Deer this trip.
Lucky enough, Randy spots a nice mature buck on the hike in to their glassing knob. They decide to split up so Jerry can watch the stalk from a distance to keep an eye on the deer in case he spooks. Randy and Dale head off to make their stalk hoping to get within range before the deer bed down for the day, when they'll be much harder to glass up.

Tough break guys. At least you gave it a good go, and now have some familiarity with the area for next time.
Unfortunately not everyone can get the extra time to scout in advance, especially if you have to travel to get there. But the time out there with friends and experiencing it all together is a big part of it too. I'm sure you guys enjoyed it. Keep at it, cheers!

I applaud the effort, they don't call them Grey Ghost for nothing. I know that you were hoping upon hope to be able to use a rifle as an advantage since the OTC archery in January hasn't gone so well in putting one down. But like you have said many times, hunting isn't killing it is the adventure with either great friends like Jerry or family like your Uncles this year and last, etc... and all the moments that turn into memories. I have been hunting whitetail deer in my home state of West Virginia for 20 years and have yet to lay a buck on the dirt with gun or bow and I am out there, but mostly around the house since there isn't much public land where I live. I always enjoy and appreciate you and your guests' positive outlook even after burning a pile of points. Every hunter has their favorite recipe for tag soup. Thanks again for sharing. Good luck to you, family, friends and the Fresh Tracks crew during application season.

Randy, I hope you get a chance to read this. I drew a 66a Idaho Elk tag in 2019. I was so excited and looked forward with anticipation to my hunt. I ended up hunting on the Idaho/Wyoming border. I found a public BLM land that looked really promising but was private land locked. Another hunter told me to go talk to a land owner they knew to walk their property to the public land. When I knocked on the door the land owner told me they had been "instructed" to not let hunters walk their property to access the public land. The other land owner said the same thing. I was getting a really weird vibe from the local land owners. I found out that the person doing the "instructing" was none other but JOHNNY MORRIS of Cabela's and Bass Pro. He built a huge beautiful cabin that bordered that private land locked public hunting area. Apparently he is trying to buy that BLM public land. How ironic that the man that has made his fortunes selling to people like me and other hunters is actively trying to keep people off of public land. I was so upset at the hypocrisy and strategy he was using to keep people off of public land. I read about all of the money he has donated to foundations so I get the feeling like nobody would do or say anything about his blocking public land from hunters. Apparently he has been planting crops to bring elk in to his back yard property area and he flew in and killed a massive bull in 2019 and flew out. Isnt one of the missions of RMEF to keep hunting from becoming a rich man's sport and from allowing the 1% to buy up sacred hunting land? I read several of his quotes on getting kids out hunting and preserve the sport. I am still so angered with how things shook out in 2019 and it left such a sour taste in my mouth. Then I am even more frustrated with the feeling of having no voice or influence. I work so hard and earned my vacation to hunt only to be so upset with this situation. The only thing I can do is share my story and experience. I love your shows. I wrote this because I just watched a hunt where you helicoptered on to the public land that was blocked by private land owners.
