  • "SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS", the first solo album of legendary SAXON's frontman, is out now. To celebrate its release, Biff releases new video for "Scarborough Fair".
"School of Hard Knocks" is available to buy now at: hyperurl.co/Sch...
The English North is everything you saw in Game of Thrones and more. It is the true heart of England, the region where its soul resides, and Biff Byford has earned the right to be considered its true heavy metal bard.
In his first ever solo Album, Biff takes on not just tales and stories from his heart and soul, but also investigates the Middle Ages and Medieval history amongst other subjects.
School of Hard Knocks was produced by Biff Byford, recorded by Jacky Lehmann at Brighton Electric Studios in Brighton (UK) and mixed at Queen Street Studios in Stockholm (Sweden) by Mats Valentin. The album also features guest appearances by Phil Campbell (Motörhead/Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons), Alex Holzwarth (Rhapsody of Fire, Turilli / Lione Rhapsody), Nick Barker (Voices), Dave Kemp (Wayward Sons) and Nibbs Carter (Saxon).
On School of Hard Knocks, Byford worked with Fredrik Åkesson (Opeth) on guitars, Christian Lundqvist on drums and Gus Macricostas on bass (Biff himself played a spot of four string thunder too!).

I am turning 60 this year and I refuse to think or act like an elderly person. Because of my job I cant wear my hair long anymore. But I still believe in the strength and inner power that Hard Rock Metal music delivers into your heart and your soul and am so glad to see Biff carrying on and adapting to the role of Heavy Metal Grandfather. "Rock on Biff".

I'm still a mere stripling compared to most of the guys who already replied to this, only 49 (50 this year) I've been a metal fan since before I was ten years old. Absolutely love Saxon and always have. I had long hair when I was 18 (Along with the jeans and boots and leather of course) I grew it again when I was 40, as I had signed up as an extra on a fantasy TV show that was filming in my backyard, grew the beard long as well! I lost the hair and beard shortly after as I had to have chemotherapy (obviously it worked or I wouldn't be commenting now) I grew the hair and beard again as a bit of a personal protest 2 years ago (long story and ultimately very boring, even for me never mind anyone else) I shaved my face and head with great relief when that was all done, and intended to keep both hair and beard short for the rest of my life as it is just a lot more simple, especially for a motorbike enthusiast. Then the world changed and Covid-19 shut everything down. Right now I look like a wild man, or Robinson Crusoe! My hair grows fast, and even though I'm getting on a bit in years it is still black! If the barber shops don't open soon I'm going to look like an ageing metal fan who hoarded hair dye instead of toilet roll. Apart from all that personal twaddle, I can't act like an elderly person, it just isn't in me so I completely understand. When my kids were born I said to myslef, right now is the time to get serious. I tried, but now they are grown up I find myself telling them off colour jokes and encouraging 'silly' behaviour. I started riding motorbikes when I was 20 and still use my 900CC whenever I can. I got my first tattoo not long after and I have never, ever since I turned 40 considered buying a sportscar. Or trying to seduce a younger version of my wife, or any of the other mid life crisis stuff! When my illness came out of the blue, I felt the most pysically strong I had ever been in my life, after it was cured, I knew for a fact that I would never be like that again. I don't play contact sports any more, I don't walk ten miles a day with a backpack full of hand weights, but I'm still lucky enough to be mobile, and self sufficient and able to do most of the things I did before and most importantly I don't feel or think any differently to how I did at 18 years old! Long live the concepts of 'heavy' and 'hard"

There’s nothing put on or whatnot about any singers voice. They do what they do. Biff is a legend in his own right. He’s not the powerhouse of a Dickinson, or a Halford, or whoever, but when you hear the man sing you know it’s from the heart.

    • @Nissardpertugiu
      @Nissardpertugiu 3 года назад

You indeed even tried to sing this .
This is difficult . Even its more pure at first and subtil . But the tone , the vibrato and the notes he actually hit in key and the gritt he make after in all textures ... its Difficult . At the contrary , don't think its simple because its well done , or not fancy about.
As far beign powerhouse , listen again Unleash the beast , Metalhead , Inner sanctum or songs like Sacrifice or Devil foot print ..
His voice get deeper , rawer but also go in a upper register mix voice that he didnt in early albums .
Dickinson fucked up his Upper register in 1984 , and After samsom he became 1 trick pony in Operatic one frequencies clean vocals its boring . Cold , without blues ( that Biff , Coverdale , Halford have )
Biff is more Fuller and again can go much more agressive than bruce today .
So not powerhouse my ass .

There are approximately zero singers in metal who get better as they approach and get beyond middle-age. Apart from Biff... he just gets better each year somehow. His range increases and his sense of melody becomes more creative and wide. Defies logic and physics and physiology. Forget the fact that he's always has perfect pitch. He makes the best of his tone... and has made it something special as time has gone on.

I always wondered why Parsley, Sage, Rosemary n Thyme were in the song lol don't get me wrong, I still sing it n my heart still longs hear it n I love it hard right inside here ❤️

I certainly did my part to convert those around me to the likes of Saxon, Motorhead, Raven etc; my high school locker, book covers, denim jacket were adorned by countless logos of nwobhm/thrash/punk/underground bands that helped set the soundtrack to my teen years and beyond. I was very often on Saxon shows (first was 1981) and had the chance to meet Biff and the band after the show. Always like friends and not like big music stars. Thank you for thoose great times Biff, also in the name of my friends. Keep on rockin' and take care. Eric

As written somewhere else, I saw saxon live in 1980 in Rome, I was 18 and it was my first metal concert, I owned "wheels Of Steel" but not "Strong Arm Of The Law " yet. Now am 59 and yesterday, going at work, I listened "SAOTL" in my car, loudly as Saxon and Biff deserve.

Biff and Saxon have always been a favorite band of mine very underrated. I know other bands like Iron Maiden Judas Priest and Ozzy get the recognition and all due respect to them but Saxon are true metal heroes and Biff is the engine that keeps it running .Saxon forever keep it going Biff.
