      I mean, I did see some nicer looking moss poles on etsy, they have a coloured front with patterns, and their back is clear so you can see the root development, but they're like £25 a piece, and they don't have free shipping so they're expensive as hell.

    I love your poles. To circumvent the power tool thing I 3d print them.
    😊Also made joiners to attach each one as my plant gets taller. Only issue is they're lightweight compared to pvc so the potential for them falling down as they get taller is higher. But they're super convenient. Thank you for sharing your moss poles!

    The smooth plastic base makes these poles so easy to decorate anyway people want. Paint a design on them. Use glow in the dark paint. Cover them in hello kitty stickers. You could do a stucco faux stone finish on them. Cover them in fake bark. Cover them in real bark. I painted mine to look like oxidized copper.

    As a qualified carpenter (now retired) I will warn of power tool kick back from a saw like this. DO NOT stand directly behind the saw . As an indoor plant owner novice of two years I personally am still happy with mesh poles aka Sydney plant guy 2022. Yes they do dry out fast , but being retired I have the time to soak the poles once every 8 days or so.

      The plastic sheets I'll admit could probably be cheaper outside of Canada or if you go off book and use an alternative product I haven't thought of (eg I've heard people using a dollar store placemat). But I don't see how it can be easier if it still takes longer with more steps.
      Maybe less risky? Quieter? Less scary? Sure. But I don't agree that it's easier.

    Tool rentals really are an affordable option a lot of people don't think about when it come to these projects. Even better, many communities have "tool libraries" -- ours is even a part of our regional library system, where you can check out tools and lawn/garden supplies with your library card for free!
    Also, if you have a Habitat for Humanity "Re-Store" thrift shop in your area, usually behind where they stage all of the nicer furniture and stuff they have an area where they sell leftover building materials. You can often find used power tools there, not to mention paying much less for the pipe/connectors/painters tape if they happen to have them in stock.
    Also-also, a cheap circular saw or angle grinder from Harbor Freight or Wal-Mart costs like. $20USD. New. If you're renting them more than a couple times a year, it's worth buying one instead if you've got the space to store it.
    I agree it's frustrating to see things labeled as "DIY" when they require expensive, specialized equipment (or 100 gallons of epoxy resin, ugh) but that doesn't mean anything not made of pipe cleaners and hot glue is unrealistic or inaccessible. If you're the type of person who DIYs (and a lot of planty people do, building shelves and things like that), you probably have these tools and some of these materials on hand to begin with.
    Anyway, thanks for the idea for this pole! None of the nurseries near me have moss poles rn and I like this much better than ordering one, so have some validation that your project isn't ridiculous/unrealistic/too expensive as thanks :)

    i find its easier to just cut all the way through the pipe leaving no end pieces and since the pvc is rigid but flexible you can just nest them into each other with no need for connector pieces, then you have one continuous strip of moss with no breaks

    • @KillThisPlant
      @KillThisPlant  Год назад +4

      How is the stability after you do that?

    • @tim_meister
      @tim_meister Год назад +1

      @KillThisPlant it's ok, it's not super stable when you stack more than two, what I tend to do is zip tie them together and that helps a lot. Originally I did this because I couldn't find connector pieces that fit tightly enough but i like it because it ls easier to make and you don't have extra pieces lying around.
      Edit: I drill holes on the top and bottom for the zip ties

    again-not to be a stalking nudge, heh, - try the transparent pvc tubes used for vacuuming applications by powertec. 2,5" diameter. (also at hd, at least here in the u.s.). a teency bit pricier, but they don't go bad, right ? ;) same functionality, more aesthetically pleasing, and kewl root monitoring throughout and around... i've done around 40 for one of my plant rooms, and they look amazing. made some that have one row of 1" holes, some have 3 rows of 3/4" holes, some have a long channel down the side. didn't cut 'em in 1/2 down the length, just left 'em as tubes for the structural 'extra strength', and drilled holes down one 'side'...but i'm sure the 1/2 tube method/style would work equally well. using those w/ the new zealand sphagnum is simply da bomb. that they're (nearly) clear makes the camouflaging of the pole by the plant as it grows easier and faster. most of mine are close to not really being able to see the poles, and i started some of 'em in april ! (and some have roots going all the way -3'- up to top, even though plant's 1/3 height, heh.being able to watch that is almost like an ant farm, lol). would love to see you try one out in a vid, hehehe.. i think you'll really, really like the result. 'swhy i'm mentioning all this again. won't anymore, promise! :D . i enjoy your vids :)

I feel aesthetically it looks better, less effort and cheaper. Sure might be a bit to get the moss out but if you’re planning to take the whole plant off the moss pole it’ll still take time to separate the roots from the moss anyways. You forget about too ugly and expensive. What's the point of having such a gorgeous plant with that thing sticking out of it? I'm working on a idea using bamboo sticks weaved together with hemp rope that will have gaps for aerial roots. Great tip about Home Depot rentals.

      @@KillThisPlant Every plant I order seems to come with a foot long bamboo stick to stabilize it during shipping. I'm like bamboo is too hard to come by to throw away, time to get inventive. Plus I'm poor 😂

    Omg be nice to Lee!!!
    I have indulged in a couple of plants who came on the standard nursery moss poles. Do you have pro-tips / a previous video on how to extricate from old moss pole before transitioning to an upgrade?
    Also: please vote on indulging in a monstera pinnatipartita on sale 33% off.
    Thank you!

      No specific advice. Either be patient or start ripping roots.
