N64 Glenn Plant Not all. The very early 32 bit FIFA games sucked ass. Sega Worldwide Soccer '97 and ISS Pro were the first decent 3D footy games. Actua Soccer 2 was also good, but played kinda oddly.
Check out HOCKEY HEROES. It's a 3-on-3 arcade hockey RPG being developed with Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey as its main inspiration but with a story mode and RPG elements added on top :)
I got both games shortly after they came out. I was in middle school and my parents paid for them. I remember being disappointed that there seemed to be very few changes to the game. I was hoping for a few evolutionary changes. However, I was such a HUGE hockey fan at the time that I would have bought it for the updated rosters alone. Also, it was a great time to be a Detroit Red Wings fan.
My friends and I played this game to death back in the day. This is right up there with NFL Blitz on N64 as far as i'm concerned. It's such a fun game and can get absolutely insane.

Never really thought about that. I wasn't big into sports games but I absolutely loved Wayne Gretzky's 3D and I bought the 98 as soon as I saw it. I honestly only remember the slight graphical difference but back then I didn't care. I loved both games and played the crap out of them without, until now, 20 years later lol, realized they pretty much were the same game. Too much fun though, loved those two games
Fortunately I would usually rent games like this before deciding to buy them or not. This video reminded me of when I rented it and thought what you said, "Man, this is basically the same game."
The great thing is you can get it for like 5 bucks now instead of 50 :). So it seems like a much better game to me due to depreciation. Edit: oops, you already said that in the review. I commented midway through watching it (no pun intended)
Back in the day (mid 90s to early 2000s) we used to have SO MANY sport games. I mean we had a ton of basketball. hockey, football, baseball and even extreme sport games. All we have today is FIFA(footbal/soccer), Madden (American Football/handegg) and MLB The Show (baseball). We also have PES but that is dying. All the extreme sport games are dead along with stuff like Tennis and Golf. Did people just not like sport games anymore?
only FIFA and NFL give exclusive license right? Not NHL/Baseball but people sort of don't buy those games anymore. extreme sport games are also pretty dead
I think people finally had enough with buying essentially the same game each year with little tweaks here and there. Madden is the worst example and I think full price every year is a little too steep for not enough content. At the very least if EA weren’t such greedy fucks, they could release a new game for each sport every couple of years with new mechanics and do like a $15 DLC pack for updated rosters. I feel like that would be a lot easier to swallow.
well every year a small amount of people stop watching american football(very low but it is decreasing) so the same should be happening with Madden but I have not researched it. EA really has a gold mine with Madden/Fifa. Whoever came up with taking the licence is a cutthroat visionary. I remember enjoying the 2K Sega Football games and they gave Madden a run for their money until EA got the monopoly deal
I really love the original Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey, but this sequel is a huge disappointment because it makes one huge change that you somehow missed: it's a LOT harder to score this time! They tried to make the game more realistic by reducing scoring versus the original, and since I much prefer the higher-scoring style of the original over this lower-scoring, less fun sequel, Wayne Gretzky '98 isn't worth getting. Stick to the far better original.
I always wondered why EA never released their NHL games on the N64 when they did with FIFA, Madden & NBA Live. It would have been decent competition to the Wayne Gretzki games (in the US at least).
It is the best bad game in my collection. Behind only Golden Eye and Mario Kart 64, this was the most played multiplayer title I back then. A friend of mine and I still play it sometimes to this day.. :)
At the Options screen hold L and press C-Right, C-Left, C-Left, C-Right, C-Left, C-Left, C-Right, C-Left, C-Left. If you did the code correctly a "1" should appear on the 10th spot from the left. This will give you the classic Minnesota, Quebec, Winnipeg and Hartford teams.
Eh, I need it if I want a complete NA collection; but, disappointing that it doesn't have much to offer over the original. At least it's cheap. I can't imagine paying full price for either of them but especially not both 😬
Maybe Midway had a case of If it aint broke dont fix it in their mind NBA Jam's sequel Hangtime had new things added like 4p but i guess they ddint know anything new to add until NHL Hitz on the Gamecube
Still one of the best Hockey games of all time! where else can you skate on a disco floor, a pirate ship, a graveyard, or snow area all in one! the custom made teams like the sharks the undead and the rats are funny
See midway never had incredible graphics on the N64 but some of their games show that they knew what they were doing. Probably more of a budget and time issue
all hockey games with a year stapled at the end. are a rip except for the rosters. even worse nowadays with pay to plays . compared to now, or the many other sega years of hockey. this is alright.
for the time...sports games were a weak point for the n64 and these hockey games are perfect examples of the problem. Sure they are fun and fast paced the first time u play them...but have NOWHERE near the longevity or replayability of say nfl blitz or nba jam (which were superior on other systems). And once you play say..30 mins of either of the hockey offerings...u saw all that had to be offered. while i hate the sport of hockey in real life...it really translate exceptionally well to videogames...and not having a good representation of it (or any sport for that matter) on the n64 hurt the system. If you liked sports games (tho soccer might be the lone exception) the n64 was to be avoided.
this was the era when sport games were crazy and fun
Yeah they are few and far between these days
N64 Glenn Plant Not all. The very early 32 bit FIFA games sucked ass. Sega Worldwide Soccer '97 and ISS Pro were the first decent 3D footy games. Actua Soccer 2 was also good, but played kinda oddly.
Nicolas Cortés Sports game are still fun, but very less blitzy!

They had a great roster at this era

Blitz is amazing - all of them!
timmer919hep second that!!
Blitz on Dreamcast shat all over the N64 version but its enjoyable on both
DG 1 still have my launch DC
"That goalie's a wall!"
never played the original so I was very satisfied with this version.
Definitely worth the full price tag. Played a bunch of this every thursday with my dad and my uncles/cousins. Great times.
One of my favorite games on the console
Just a shame they didn’t push this title more
Check out HOCKEY HEROES. It's a 3-on-3 arcade hockey RPG being developed with Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey as its main inspiration but with a story mode and RPG elements added on top :)
Playing with 4 in arcade mode back in the day was fun.
Over the top checks with the goal being set on fire!
Hockey games are always great in multiplayer
Never really thought about that. I wasn't big into sports games but I absolutely loved Wayne Gretzky's 3D and I bought the 98 as soon as I saw it. This year's event will not be a dud. It's how the Olympics are meant to be. The best since 1980.
meh I think for purists perhaps but for those of us who only like watching hockey at the olympics its cooler to see the big names.
I played NHL Breakaway 98 and I think it was pretty cool, Great Review as Always!
I loved breakaway on ps1
Fortunately I would usually rent games like this before deciding to buy them or not. This video reminded me of when I rented it and thought what you said, "Man, this is basically the same game."
Nice! Too difficult for me though, it's got no hadokens lol. Great stuff, you are a source of inspiration for my channel. Cheers!
If this had hadoukens - 10/10 ha
I still have this game
So, do we think the inevitable N64 Classic console will raise the prices of original cartridges or lower them?
Hard to say as I don’t keep an eye on nes or snes prices these days
The original NHL Hitz. Tons of fun.
NHL hitz was the best
i lvoed all the crazy courts and teams to unlock.
it kicked ass
The great thing is you can get it for like 5 bucks now instead of 50 :). So it seems like a much better game to me due to depreciation.

Another reskin ?!? YES 3 in a row for Midway XD
Crazy how they pulled it off though right!
Very first game I got for my n64. I was like 7 years old and I knew NOTHING about hockey lol I was just trying to fight all the time
Very fun Hockey game!
Agreed!
Never even knew they made a sequel. Looks exactly the same.
perhaps its best that you didn't know!
holy graphics batman!!!!! This was a game i spent hrs on
multiplayer right?
yeah always multiplayer for these wayne gretzky hockey games
He Glenn when will you cover the two mystical ninja games?
soon :)
This reminds me of that time one of the ea games on the wii was the exact same game except the year number was changed
Haha I didn’t know that
Olympics hockey 98 was a great game. Olympics hockey was different it was countries. Besides it's hockey can't really switch sporting games that much
Best hockey game ever!
Certainly up there - nhl95 on genesis for me tho
I need to give this series a go.
worth the cheap price it sells for
You need to do Nagano Winter Olympics 98 next.
Did that years ago 😬
N64 Glenn Plant l meant a HDMI re- review dude.
ah I wouldn't spend time on that game, really not worth the effort
N64 Glenn Plant l don't blame you it is a duffer.

Yeah it’s much harder but I personally didn’t mind that for this sequel because scoring becomes very easy on the first when you know the sweet spots
Yes.. Glenn is da man
One of my favorite 2 player games om the n64 😁 🏒🔥
yeah its defo an easy one to play with friends
A fun hockey game for a console that had limited amount of good hockey games.
agreed!
I always wondered why EA never released their NHL games on the N64 when they did with FIFA, Madden & NBA Live. It would have been decent competition to the Wayne Gretzki games (in the US at least).
I think when they saw the low sales for breakaway by acclaim they would have realised it wouldn’t be worth the porting costs
Probably. Those other sports have much wider universal appeal too, I guess. How on earth did Nascar '99 get released in Europe, though? lol
NHL 99 from EA is released for N64!
Yup, the only one in the series for n64
Kinda odd when even the Saturn got a couple of them. The framerate sucks though lol.
Best Hockey game ever! :D
Great game. Ps1 hockey games can't compare.
Fire Ball??
I disagree with your assessment of the Olympics not having NHLer, I believe it should be non NHL players like the miracle of 1980.
It is the best bad game in my collection. Behind only Golden Eye and Mario Kart 64, this was the most played multiplayer title I back then. A friend of mine and I still play it sometimes to this day.. :)
Yeah I can imagine that this is one of those games any friend even now could still play easily
I had a friend that we racked up collectively about 2,500 points together.
This was a really fun game, but can't beat the best hockey game ever, NHL '93 on the Sega Genesis.
nothing can beat that - ever!
You like 93 better than 94?
Yeah, it's close but '93 has fighting and head bleeds.
Bleeding Gums oh, I'll have to revisit it then
Did Hartford make it to the team Roster for this one?
no idea! hah

Frank M Thanks man!

yeah this should be no more than a few dollars to get
Maybe Midway had a case of If it aint broke dont fix it in their mind

Oh man hitz! Memories 😬
Still one of the best Hockey games of all time!

the custom made teams like the sharks the undead and the rats are funny
Great video! The game looks as bad as I remember it!
Nah I owned this as a kid
I just thought it was crappy cos the n64 was pretty new tech and Midway couldn't get their head around it. Perhaps I'm being too nice haha..
See midway never had incredible graphics on the N64 but some of their games show that they knew what they were doing. Probably more of a budget and time issue
Long Island? LOL!
Ha I thought that too
all hockey games with a year stapled at the end. are a rip except for the rosters. even worse nowadays with pay to plays . compared to now, or the many other sega years of hockey. this is alright.
Looks very boring but it's surprisingly fun to play. Has the second best announcer for the N64, only beaten by Super Smash Bros.
You know I might second that view!

Dang. This game looks terrible
Certainly isn’t a looker 👀
