In this video I talk about some of the differences between soft and hard pastels. I also talk about how they erase and blend with water and solvent.
The art supplies I used are as follows:
Hard Pastels - Conte
Semi Hard - Faber Castell Polychromos pastels
Medium Soft - Art Spectrum, Holbein
Creamy Soft - Unison
Very Soft - Schmincke, Blue Earth and Sennelier
Ultra Soft - PanPastels
The paper I used in this demonstration is Mi- Tientes TEX

I have used water to blend the pan pastel and it has worked. So a bit confused. The video is super informative thank you…
G'day Ayesha, agree water can be used with PanPastels, but I found it not easy to blend, as the blending agent is not as water soluable as the soft pastels. But would love to read more about your experience. Thank you so much for watching. ❤️👍
@@Xrissart maybe it’s because I use a mix of pan pastel and Rembrandt for an under painting…..cos it blends well for me…I’m gonna try again n let you know about my finding’s

Thank you for this--I love making these sorts of tests, but also learning from yours! So many things to try... One observation I have made is that pan pastels blend really smoothly with alcohol. I like it a little better than the results I got from turps. I wonder if the Holbein would work with alcohol a little better than with water? I would test it myself, but I apparently only have their oil pastels, and not the dry.
You have convinced me that I NEED Unison and Art Spectrum in my collection! :)
Hi Leha, so glad this video was helpful. You can't go past Unison. Wonderful pastel indeed. All I can say is play, play and more play. Great review! I am mostly using Schmincke, but also have a few sticks of those other companies and also a few from Mount Vision (softness similar to Schmincke). I wanted to see Blue Earth pastels because I love their color range and love their shape because I would sometimes want the rectangle ones but can't afford Terry Ludwig's since you have to buy such large sets when ordering online :D
G'Day Larisa, thank you for your comment. I also happen to have Mount Vision and had these sent from the US, they are brilliant (their pigments are so rich and vibrant). You are correct about Blue Earth's range and are lovely too. I love the way they package their colour range in red's, blue's etc.. The great thing about Blue Earth is their broad tonal values when you purchase them in a set (takes all the guess work out of the equation), but they are super, super soft. I've heard of Terry Ludwig's pastels but don't have any sadly (must check them out). I love discovering new art supplies and I must just have to purchase a small set soon. There are so many types of pastels out there, where do you start and when does it end? :)
Xrissart I know exactly what you mean, when I want to buy new individual ones I spend an hour clicking on the ones I want and then two hours removing them from my basket because I can't possibly afford all of them 😂
Larisa so funny I do the same thing, never mind we will just have wait until we can afford them. You're better off buying one good quality pastel than ten bad quality ones. Happy painting:) PS. Thank you for watching!

I think that Unison has a higher gum arabic content as one of their binders than some other brands which is why it becomes so paint-like when wet with water. I believe the Holbein has a higher clay content in their binder formula which is why it doesn't wet down with water as well as the others.

I just have the Prismacolor NuPastels for my harder pastel and the PanPastels for my soft pastels, but I did manage to get them both on sale from Blick. A big set of 48 Nupastel colors, plus 4 extra. I love their water-solubleness (Is that a word?) and used that technique for a Christmas card for my mom this last year with my gouache. It's interesting how different each Pastel is and what they can bring to the table (or easel!) I can't use every type of pastel out there but at least I finally found two types that I can enjoy after lots and lots of research. :)
Tsukabu, so glad that you're viewing these videos and hopefully they're helpful in some way. This collection of pastels is what I've experienced with and there are soooo many more varieties out there that I would still like to try. Since this video I've purchased the Prismacolour NuPastels and absolutely love them, they have the right amount of hardness for the way I work. I don't mind you asking me questions and sharing your news so comment all you like.

Thank you so much for the comparison! This is so helpful! May i ask, Would the Faber-Castell hard pastels be similar/ the same as the prismacolor Nupastels? I have a few of the Faber-Castell but heard someone speak of the nupastels recently - im not sure i can really get the nupastels. Thank you o much again!

Not sure where you live, but imagine you can purchase these through Amazon. I live in Australia and I'm lucky my local art shop stocks Nupastels. Again thank you for watching and happy painting.

Can I combain FC polychromos pastels with FC Polychromos pencils or with FC Albrecht Dürer pencils?
Sergey thank you for your question. There are no rules in Art, there is no wrong or right way to paint and draw. The only thing that stops us is the chemical properties as far as mixing media. I would play and see what you can come up with, but having said that Albrecht Durer pencils would be a ideal for a base for colour pencil work and even the FB pastels it all depends what surface you're using that would be the most important thing that I would be considering. @@musicarch8921 Hi Music, thank you for your question. I don't like using fixative at all, but that is my preference as I have had soooo many negative results when using fixatives. If you fix after using pastels I would have the last layer being pastel with no fixative at the end.
very informative! would you consider holbein similar to rembrandt's? what brand of mineral spirits are you using?
bengurl Thank you for taking the time to view this video. I enjoy painting with all sorts of pastels. I think Rembrandt and Holbein are very different pastels and each have their purpose. I find that Holbein are great for straight edges and fine lines where Rembrandt are very rich in colour and get quite a bit coverage. I generally use Zest-it for mineral spirits, it has a citrus smell and I use this for coloured pencil artwork as well.😁

Hi, A Md. Thank you for your question. This is always the question I receive, and I guess every other artist is always searching for the best paper. To answer your (good question, by the way). I believe it's a" preference" rather than "perfect" as all artists are different in the way we work so long as it's archival, which is the main criteria. My preference is Pastelmat as it can sustain layers hard and soft. Thank you for watching.
