As a Messi fan, i originally didn't care for this Balon D'or as Messi already has 7 and anyways I became a fan of Messi because of his game play and not because how many titles or individual accolades he has won and also because Haaland equally deserves it as well this year. But I hate this narrative of that everyone favours Messi or Messi is a Media boy or the only reason he will win the Balan D'or would be because of the biased journalists and not because he actually deserves it.
For those people who say that you can't give the Balan D'or to Messi just because of the World Cup (which is not the case with Messi at all as his stats with PSG were good as well) or "just a 7 game tournament" as some idiots claim, please read the full thing.
Brazilian Ronaldo (R9) won the Balan D'or in 2002 just because of his world cup performances as he barely played 850 mins for Inter that season who btw went trophy less in that very season with just a G/A of 9. So, it was only and I mean it, only on the basis of his world cup performances, for which he was awarded a Balan D'or. Another example? Cannavaro won the Balan D'or in 2006 only because Italy won the World Cup that year. He officially won nothing with Juventus (they finished 1st in Serie A but due to the scandal, they were relegated). So, again just because of world cup, he was awarded the Balan D'or despite Ronaldinho winning both La liga and Champions League that season with Barca that too being an instrumental player and with incredible stats.
The people who are saying that it is just a 7 game tournament are the same people who justified Messi's 5th position in 2018 Balan D'or rankings even when he had the most Goal Contributions (77 G/A) of any player that season just because he couldn't win the the World Cup or the Champions League despite still winning La Liga. To whom the award was given that year? Luka Modric, again majorly because of his world cup performances.
So, no it's not that the criteria changes everytime just so that Messi can win it, infact it's quite the opposite if you actually see the trend.
The people who are saying that Messi should not win it this year are the same ones who cheered for Ronaldo when he won in 2013 when Ribery literally won the Treble with Bayern and Messi having the best stats (77 G/A) while winning La Liga than Ronaldo (68 G/A) who just won Super Copa de Espanya that season. So, neither did Ronaldo won any major titles (Ribery did) and nor he had the best stats (Messi had while also winning La Liga) in 2012-13 season but we all know who won it that year and it was possible just because of Media and Real Madrid PR. But if we just go by individual stats (as some Ronaldo fans claim), then Messi should have won the 2016 and 2018 Balan D'ors as well as had the most G/A in both of these seasons but it is not how it works. People forget that Balan D'or is a opinion based award and it is very normal to have difference of opinion but I hate it when some people just casually set this narrative that oh of course Messi will win it, he is the Media boy, Fifa will GIVE it to him and etc etc.
And if you want to talk about stats of this season, let's talk about it. Haaland won the Treble while having 71 G/A (including all the games, be it with Man City, Friendly with Norway, European Qualifires or Nations league games) on the other hand, Messi won the World Cup, Finalissima, League 1 and French Cup while also having 64 G/A EXCLUDING his stats with Inter Miami (again including all the games, be it with PSG, with Argentina of World Cup, friendly and World Cup qualifiers games). So, again Haaland has just 7 G/A more than Messi while playing significantly more minutes (4892 mins) than Messi who has played just 4210 mins. So, Messi also has better minutes per goal contribution ratio than Haaland.
Therefore, in no way freaking way, it will be "unjustified" if the Balan D'or is given to Messi. Again, I don't have a problem with Haaland winning it as well but I just don't like this agenda/narrative against Messi not just by some fans at this point but also by some reputed pundits. It's literally disgraceful at this point.

True bhai me being a messi fan , never cared if he won his 8th balon D'or. I was already happy and content with messi winning the World Cup . I too would be happy if Haaland wins it and he would deservingly win it. But I loose my shit when they question the credibility of messi winning the Bd'or. Messi was actually the best player last season and he deserves the Bd'or every bit. But I still wouldn't mind Haaland winning it.
