This is an OLD song, maybe even back to the 1800's. I had a copy of this song, with several different verses, from a mid-1950's album by Yodelin' Slim Clark. I've always loved this song.
I'm a Cajun from Louisiana, USA, I wanted to make a trip to Australia just to meet Chad Morgan. We would have become mates, myself being a cripple and large boat captain, like the one sunk by that sheila in New Zealand, I'm quite fond of his music and humor.

a cat I knew found its way back 30km over mountains and dense scrub back to its place the next day..blew me away
similar story. thing was a very large bully stray. not only was it stealing food and terrorizing other cats (it even killed one), it was also decimating songbirds, bunnies, and squirrels. trapped it, took it to the pound, they wouldn't take it. stuck it in the trunk (boot) of the car and took it 33 miles (54km) across a river and away from the bridge. it was back within a week. had to resort to more permanent measures. finally got our wildlife back.

RIP Chad. When I was about five my old man took me to a Chad Morgan show somewhere in the bush. Half way through the show I was invited up to the stage because I'd won a price - a coat hanger, Chad said. I was a bit bemused by all this but when I presented myself at the stage Chad gave me a 6 inch nail.
And no. I no longer have the nail.
Until today I didn't remember this original version. But back before Meme's took it over this was the penultimate.
It's rumoured that Chad could eat an apple through a tennis racket.

I didn't leave home till I was 50 - I was taught to stand on my own feet like dad did but what if you can't get a job and hate attention and would never consider fame - the lowest form of life in 1910 when Nana was 14 years old - absolutely NO criminals in my family!!!!! So they weren't sent to America - which was originally a penal colony or so I'm told. Plenty of people lie about us though - because they are jealous of our clean record!!

I could be wrong, but I do believe you are mistaken. This is actually a cover of a very old song dating back to 1893. I'm pretty sure the song you are referring to is actually a song written by Kevin Bloody Wilson... Once again, I could be wrong.

Ok so there was a kids cassette tape version of this song that ended with "The atom bomb fell one bright summers day then they dropped the H bomb the very next day.
