I saw another video recently that highlighted an interview with a former Sega developer who alleges that the company has long had Yakuza ties. It was fascinating, but difficult to substantiate. Service Games back in the David Rosen days had some legal trouble with the US and Japanese governments. It’s possible that their Japanese contacts at the time had Yakuza ties, especially since the Yakuza traditionally controlled amusement centers.
I have little proof of anything though. But what little is known is pretty darn fascinating. I have to admit.

Nagoshi is good at making games. His Yakuza saga is already over. Yeah there's a new series now with Like a Dragon, but without Nagoshi i have little faith the series will be as good now. He brought back Super Monkey Ball too. I wish him well but Sega no longer has anyone from the old guard who knows what they're doing.

Nagoshi was basically what you would call a key to acquire Sega for MS. Back in 2018 Sega Sammy had so many financial losses over the years Sammy wanted to divest from Sega.
Nagoshi being the corporate director of Sega at Sega Sammy's board he had a lot of power to make decisions. Even before he became creative chief officer in 2012 he wished Xbox performed better in Japan. He said this at E3 2009 during Project Natal session.
The rumors of MS purchasing Sega were actually true back in 2018 but something happened and the deal fell through. Could have been Ministry of Finance or government who stopped the deal from happening.
Nagoshi had something to say about Atlus too. In October 2013, once Sega Sammy purchased the bankrupt Index Corporation under the shell corporation, Sega Dream Corporation, Nagoshi was appointed as a member of the board of directors for the reformed Atlus. Soul Hackers 2 being on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles is due to Nagoshi.
As CCO, Nagoshi kept being close to the games Ryu ga Gotoku Studio at Sega developed and stayed up to date on the newest systems and technologies.
When Phil Spencer took his trips to Japan he always met with Nagoshi at Sega which resulted in PSO2 NGS outside of Japan and all Yakuza games being ported including Judgment.
Some speculates MS is already in touch with Nagoshi Studio because MS opened a publishing arm in Japan to work with independent studios on first party games for Xbox.
Nagoshi took literally the leads of Judgment team with him including the art director. It's safe to say Judgment is dead and Yakuza will continue thanks to Masayoshi Yokoyama who has been the series creative producer and writer since Yakuza 3.

@@demetriusnp49 What strange! I can see the comment now. RUclips has been acting strange lately.
Last time I tried to say Japanese media has not reported on Sony and Square Enix. It wouldn't benefit for Sony to buy Square Enix in my opinion. There is no point in doing that. Sony's history is to buy oversea business and not cannabalize their own market. Both Sony and Nintendo go for talent and people unlike MS who only wants IPs and lay off staff.
Oversea business is anything but Japan. When Hiroki Totoki mentioned to invest in IPs they mean create them. People got that wrong when they thought about publishers own IPs. However...
Korean media has reported on Sony and three different Korean publicly traded companies were in early talks in June. Sony is not going to purchase Square Enix they are working on a deal to get either Neowiz Games, Pearl Abyss or Com2uS.
It makes a lot of sense for Sony to target a Korean developer/publisher than a Japanese publisher.
Though I miss marketing from PlayStation and I remember they were kind of slow in the beginning with PS4 and speed up around second phase with PS4 Slim, Pro and PSVR. That's when Japanese software sales started to turn a table for PS4 and rest of Asia. SCE changed name to SIE in April 2016 and the year after when Slim, Pro and VR have been out for a few months they started PS clubs in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong because PS4 were in more households then. I think with PS5 gen there is going to be a PS club in South Korea as well. At the moment there has only been stage shows at Chinajoy and G-Star. But ACGHK and Taipei Game Show have been caused by the pandemic. Only this year in January was Sony back with a PlayStation booth at TPGS and ACGHK. Maybe next year they will bring back stage shows for those as well with more upcoming games which brings me to PlayStation Experience later.
If you have heard about Sony's strategy to bring down the price to 299.99 without disc drive and with disc drive you can buy Slim for 399.99. But here is the plan to get PS5 in more households. Consumer can decide if they want to buy the only console for 299.99 and get a detachable disc drive for 99.99 later. Or buy the Slim with disc drive for 399.99. They can plan their economy. This has never been done before in the market and with the inflation you are forced to become creative and innovative.
About PlayStation Experience, they filed a new trademark in 2021. With pandemic not being so serious anymore many activities should return and PlayStation Experience later this year is crucial because after Spider-Man 2 we have no clue what PS Studios are working on. They need communicate too if they want to achieve their goal to sell 25 million PS5 units before March 31, 2024.

@@hbrant Sounds like it’s going to be one of Sony’s biggest gambles. Last of Us 2 wasn’t particularly a good outcome in the long run, so whatever PS Studios is working on might be their next ‘big thing’. Hey I’m all for it, game companies need to start taking risks again. As for Sega and Atlus, you got me…I have no idea what their plans are outside their ‘Super Game’. Let’s face it, Sonic Superstars is going to get massacred by Spider Man 2 and Mario Wonder…especially Wonder since Nintendo has been Sonic’s bread and butter for years. Not this time I guess.

    • @hbrant
      @hbrant 11 месяцев назад +1

@@demetriusnp49 Indeed, do companies start to take risks again. PS Studios is in a very unique position because they haven't released any of their new heavy hitters. I feel most of the games have been leftovers from PS4 gen. Spider-Man 2 is not impressive. None of the games PS Studios have released so far have felt current gen. Naughty Dog is working on a new IP and Santa Monica Studio is working on a new IP. Most curious about Bend because they have not impressed me since Syphon Filter. I didn't like Days Gone so I'm excited to hear they are going back to stealth. How many espionage games are there on the market today? Zero if you don't count MGS3 Remake.
As for Xdev, Urata has really been in the working. I think he is probably the reason why they are buying a Korean developer and try to spark in the Korean market. They had a dev meeting with Korean developers like PlayStation Connect in Japan last year for Japanese developers. Nagoshi Studio attended it and this year he just said "I don't want to betray my fans". I think he didn't like to betray his PlayStation fans when he worked at Sega the last two years before joining Netease. We know Netease and Sony seem close together after ABK deal. Netease was not happy about the ABK deal related to their partnership with Blizzard in China. I don't think companies should buy out publishers and MS will face problems with management afterwards because they are way too many studios to manage. I feel sorry for Xbox Game Studios. MS is not taking risks.
And other news, former Japan Studio executive has joined Xbox Publishing for Japanese market who was a main problem for Japan Studio to get deals and get out games in the PS3 gen and PS4 gen. Yasuhide Kobayashi who was the former president of Japan Studio in the PS3 gen only was a franchise producer of Everybody's Golf in the PS4 gen but both him and Mena Sato ruined the game with stupid decisions. Clap Hanz was normally favored in previous gens but this time Japan Studio messed up big time. They Westernized Everybody's Golf instead of letting it be an authentic game.
And it seems Team Asobi has trademarked Astro Bot as an non-VR game as their first PS5 game. I understand people wished for Ape Escape but that franchise has been dead for nearly two decades and like with Bend it's better to start over with a new IP than try to go back to a legacy IP. As long the vision is promising and not like the PS4 gen where stuff like Days Gone could be approved. Naughty Dog is either working on a fantasy game or cyberpunk style. Santa Monica Studio that Alannah is a writer on is said to be a sci-fi space opera game. She has also been wearing a Nasa t-shirt for few times now.
Uncharted is returning with Cassie Drake by the same studio that was taking off TLOU Remake project.
China Hero Project is a lot better than it was for few years ago. Projects are getting better. It's a young market in China for console games. These CEOs are very young so China doesn't have veterans in the console game space like Japan does. But South Korea has veterans who used to work on console games in the PS2 gen and 360 gen like Hyung-tae Kim and the Pearl Abyss chairman and founder for example.
As for events I think we're quite there but not there. Beginning of this year we were still wearing masks so Taipei Game Show was not what it used to be even without phase 2 for PlayStation. They only set up booths with game demos. No communication. Developers couldn't travel yet so only stage shows have been at Chinajoy and G-Star (South Korea) without developers. So I wonder if PlayStation Experience is set towards the end of the year because nobody were wearing masks at EVO and Chinajoy this year. ACGHK was not wearing masks but PlayStation had nothing planned for stage show so the stage was not there. I wonder if this is the reason they have skipped TGS since 2020 because of the pandemic restrictions. I heard they have to plan an event with 6-12 months in advantage.
Sega and Atlus will always feel safe to me. They have nothing that I think Sega is back. That super game supported by MS Xloud services is going to flop.

It's unfortunate if there no other opportunities in his home nation available or tenable, so that probably wouldn't be fair to him if any do.

Shenmue 3 and its insane development cycle indicates to me that, at some point, Yu Suzuki may have gone kind of crazy…..so crazy that the another crazy person was necessary to rein him in.
I’m also very surprised that Nagoshi is almost 60….thats just nuts. Nagoshi has made it clear that he intends to make console games with Nagoshi Studio. Netease is a weird choice to finance his studio, but he did essentially leave with the entire Yakuza staff. However, he is a talented game maker and I do like that Sega are able to produce high-quality game engines like those used in Yakuza. Judgement on PS5 looks phenomenal. This helps me think the old Sega have not been entirely destroyed. He is the last bit of the old-time Sega. Sega would have liked to continue the Judgement franchise but the agency of the lead actor wouldn't let it happen so maybe that was significant in Nagoshi's decision.

This really hit my friend when he watched this video. Sega is in really bad state that government force Sammy to sell Sega before the end of the year. Post-pandemic economic recovery.
Their management have no substance and Nagoshi was basically their last old guard who kept Sega in check. They are becoming like Konami's games division which is not worth anything and Sammy is gonna continue to lose money in this business. Nagoshi's departure was Sammy's final nail in the coffin.
However, as I mentioned before, Haruki Satomi became chairman of TMS Entertainment in April 2022. The only thing they will keep is the anime subsidiary with Marza Animation Planet and rights to make Sonic movies.
Sony doesn't seems to care about Sonic movies when Sony Pictures sold the rights to Paramount in 2017. And with recent news that Sega and Atlus wants to make live-action movies and TV shows based on Atlus games is quite a change. Sonic movies were handled by Sega Sammy Group, technically "Sammy".
The fact that gambling companies have taken over major shareholdings in Japanese Gaming companies and not really taken them to broad success has not gone unnoticed by the shareholders, regulators and even government departments. The current national government is watching 👀👀
Both Konami and Sega appear to be getting prepared by their current management to be sold under direction of their boards and shareholders. Domestic acquisition is almost a given with the Japanese federal government support.
With that being said, Sony has since end of last year started to build a empire of management to reset the clock for Sega. Ono became president of Delightworks games business last year and Aniplex acquired Delightworks games business and assimilated to a new company, Lasengle. A legend who revived FGC from the dead in 2009. And now Sony hired Shinji Hashimoto who is a legend for RPGs at Squaresoft since 1990 and he retires from Square Enix this year and joins Sony to become senior advisor at Sony Music Japan and board of director of ForwardWorks.
Sega lacks a good management in modern time and Sony and Nintendo are the best when it comes to management. Something that Sammy will never have and know it's game over this year because Sonic Frontiers won't be different from Forces and Lost World. Iizuka will leave before the end of the year is my prediction, right after release of Frontiers.

I wonder if Hajime Satomi is scared now. If he doesn't sell Sega fast enough his life will be short. Pay the debt to Yakuza will be better for Satomi family rather than Haruki lose his father.
I don't even understand why he didn't sell Sega in 2015 when they were in bad state instead of getting Yakuza involved. So many urgent restructuring of Sega Sammy Holdings were desperate moves between 2015 and 2021. Why did even Abe protected Sega Sammy Holdings when they were doing bad financially.
Sammy is a very tiny company compared to Sony. They can't recover from massive losses without getting Yakuza involved for financial backup. Sony made it because they had hands in so many businesses they could sold off and switch to other things as a multinational conglomerate corporation.
The problem was also to find a suitor in Japan at the time because none of the core tech companies wanted to take over Sega and get into games business. Sony is in a much better state than they were in 2013 and 2015 when Sega Sammy Holdings was bleeding. Sony surpassed SoftBank in market value and is only $100B away from Toyota who remains Japan's largest valued company.

But he wasn't perfect. Sega have some failures and Nagoshi as a CCO, he was very involved in what games Sega published/developed and what teams he choose to work. There was a very bias favoritism for the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio works, and weird decision about games (like not relasing anything for the Switch for the critical 2017-2019 period) that culminate with the Sakura Taisen revivial fiasco that cost Sega a fortune and killed the franchise for a loooong time. The PS4 game didn't set the charts sales in fire, the anime was midly rated and had have poor ratings and the mobile game was an absolute dissaster that only last SIX months:
    www.destructoid.com/segas-sakura-wars-mobile-game-has-been-a-costly-catastrophe-will-shut-down-six-months-after-launch/
After this failure, and a general bad results from the Sega Japan division, Nagoshi was demoted "only" as RGG Studio director/producer:
    www.noobfeed.com/news/11511/toshiro-nagoshi-accepts-demotion-to-sega-creative-director
Now, this a little tricky, because after August 2021, Nagoshi annunced his departure from RGG Studio and Sega to join NeetEase:
    www.eurogamer.net/yakuza-creator-toshihiro-nagoshi-confirms-departure-from-sega
But now he is talking about he leaved Sega because in his own words "I didn't want to become CEO".
    www.eurogamer.net/yakuza-creator-quit-sega-because-he-didnt-want-to-become-ceo
How is possible Nagoshi could climb again the latter to the top when he was demoted after the Sakura Taise revivival failure and the mediocre Sega Japan results?
I think the guy is a good as game developer/producer, but was one of the responsibles of the bad managment in Sega, just as Kenji Matsubara and the other guys in the board. Sure, he probably could be more happy as a director, supervisor, planner or producer role, but he is blatantly lying about what was the real reason he leave Sega.
A very good video, and a funny take on the "Chingyu" Puyo Puyo affair.

Yes, he and Hideo Baba (from Delightworks) killed Sakura Taisen franchise for good. He took dumb decisions about this franchise, for example: hiring incopentent writers, changing Valkyria Chronciles esque battle system into generic musou without teamwork, which was always a main theme of this series, or rejection of Oji Hiroi help in project (Sakura Wars creator). He wanted kill franchise for good, because he secretly hate anime. Sega hired wrong guy on game director, they should picked Oji Hiroi or Ryutaro Nonaka / Shuntaro Tanaka from Valkyria Chronicles (they previously also worked at Overworks on Sakura Taisen) not dude who don't care about nothing which is no Yakuza.
