    It's awesome that:
    1. Other instructor grabbed the bridle.
    2. Student was so aware and calm that he was able to help the situation.

      Yes, you're definitely right, if the other instructor wouldn't grab that bridle the main container would get in the air and if it opens before he opens the buckle of his helmet.... the tangled instructor should not have released the student that was a very dangerous move. I don't judge him (this was a very unusual and stressful situation), just an observation from my view.

He let go and dropped both elbows, stayed close enough to not pull the bridle and allow the student to give a helping hand. The other instructors actions gave all a good chance to help it end well. When I skydived, you could not wear anything on your helmet, frap hat, suit or body that was likely to snag on lines. Anyone wearing a helmet mounted camera had to have cracks and snag points filled and streamlined. Wearing a camera required clearance from the CCI to allow people to jump with a safe system. GoPros bolted to helmet or wrist are not safe from line or bridle snags; this video just proves the reason why those precautions were/ are valid.
    The AFF student was lucky and yes bravo, he was very situationally aware.
    The instructor with the GoPro bolted on his his is negligent and as proven, dangerous (not to mention lucky). And this goes for anyone with a GoPro line and bridle snagger bolted to the helmet without anti-snag precautions.
    Have a proper, safe streamlined system to house your camera. Or simply hire a camera jumper with the proper gear. There is no point in having the latest ADD, RSL, hot canopy and all the cool and groovy gear, when videos like this, and thousands of other videos show jumpers have no idea of fundamental basic risk and how to mitigate it.
    For all of you whoop-whooping and high-fiving the jumpers in this video, stating how awesome they are; the instructors placed the student in a dangerous situation that is totally avoidable and never should have occurred.

    • @johnny5327
      @johnny5327 3 года назад +3

      @@jons6368 The student was impressive, but the situation should never have arisen and the instructors are negligent in putting the student and themselves in that position in the first place.
      Totally irresponsible to be wearing a camera that can snag a line or bridle. I am old school, we only jumped equipment and gear that was safe or the risk mitigated. All that is needed is a streamlined housing for the camera. Anyone who jumps the a camera like this or on their wrist is a hazard to others and themselves.
      Happy to discuss this with anyone. But if you cannot understand the issue, know the grim reaper is just over your shoulder, and in skydiving he catches up, eventually.

    The issue isn’t that the main side instructor is wearing a camera. He was in a good position during the pull sequence too. Fortunately he was able to untangle the bridle in a timely manner but that should not be his first option. If your camera gets entangled reach up there like a big man, and break off the camera. It is by sheer luck that he was able to untangle it. Instructors should also have a means of jettisoning their helmet in instances like this as well. A $300 helmet and/or a $500 GoPro is a small price to pay to save two lives. The roller mounts are nice because they have a lower likelihood of getting snagged on something, however, they can’t be ripped off if something were to happen. I like the old school adhesive GoPro mount. It stands a slightly higher chance of getting entangled if a bridle comes across your helmet but it’s easy to just rip that thing off if needed.
    Edit: just noticed in the slowmo that the instructor DID chop his helmet. Incredible head up work on his part. He has obviously rehearsed his emergency procedures in his head for an event like this!

    Side mount, side mount, side mount. Those top-mounted GoPros are killers-in-waiting. Because they mount on the curve of the helmet and don't require a flat plane to bottom-mount onto, they tend to sit farther forward than the older cameras which were mounted more on the absolute top of the helmet.
    And great job by the student. It was his action that finally pulled the camera off and freed the bridle. His awareness and cool under pressure are commendable.

      Ah, yes, I see it. Missed that before. But I still give high marks to the student for trying something. S/he was essentially trying to clear the bridle from the camera and appears to have kept his/her cool.
      I agree you can get snag-free top mounts. But since you can, you should. I don't believe a snag is always waiting to happen simply because there's a camera on an AFFI. I have hundreds of AFF jumps with a side mount (Sony PC 7 back in the day and now a Drift. I'm not wild about the Drift as a camera but it more than serves its purpose for student training.) I'm pretty convinced that a side-mount for AFF puts worries of a snag to rest.

    • @redhelmet8

      Not part of the incident but I might be able to help. The camera and helmet did not stay attached to the bridle. If you watch at 1:03 and pause at the right moment, you can see the bridle came undone from the camera mount upon releasing the helmet. The helmet probably just fell to the ground following that destroying both helmet and camera (hence why we don't have the footage from the snagged camera). Had it remained snagged, my guess is it would have only resulted in a cut away had the helmet/pilot chute combo fell over the front of the main upon opening, effectively a line over. Other than that I would figure the main to remain fine or at least be there and controllable with a slight deformation on the rear due to the additional weight on the bridle. Might hit you on the head upon landing though.

    Great job managing it; all three were spectacular. However, helmets with no quick release are foolish in any situation, IMO. Full-face helmets with no way to quickly release the helmet don't belong on any instructional jump (again, my opinion).
    At the least, use a side-mount camera.
    And don't float so high on the student. ;)

    I see a need for a helmet with a streamlined camera compartment. If thats not a thing already someone should get on that pronto.

    That instructor was smart... Had he went tumbling.. Both of them would be tangled up. So he goes right for the helmet. To remove it. While holding the pilot chute line..

      @johnny5327 3 года назад

      No the instructor was not smart, he was lucky to get away with a problem he created. The instructors (both of them) should never have place the student in that situation in the first place. Any camera worn should be in a streamline housing that cannot snag on lines or bridle. No whoop whoop from me. I would recommend anyone stay away from those who jump with such naive attitude to equipment and safety, especially someone who is an instructor!

      @@johnny5327 Norse shit. He created nothing. As the student tossed that PC in his face. Not as instructed. And ever student does it. It it's either a weak toss or they can't find it and need help..
      Thank You

    That falling helmet could kill someone on the ground.

      Yes but I believe most jump zones are free and clear of people below during a jump.. in case of an accident above..

    Wow, I can't believe the student was aware of what was going wrong and that he could get the bridle off. if that helmet stayed on, who knows if it would have created a line twist.
