DTD RIDER I did my first tandem June 2013 and started working on my license in August 2013. I’ve been jumping more and more since then. In 2017 I got 416 jumps. This year should be between 500 and 600
Haha nice work Noah! It's Bluefoot from the heliboogie, was great to meet you man and hear about this jump. I look forward to more content dude see you out there!
Tarvo Kallaste I think I’ve had 6 real malfunctions. Last one was jump #922. That percentage is higher than average. I used to own a canopy that had an issue with the way it’s control lines were stowed. It gave me a lot of experience dealing with line overs. Probably should have gotten it fixed long before I did.
I was lucky enough to have my first cutaway on my 25th that was also my last jump needed for my A license :) Was on mid tour leave from Afghanistan in Hawaii (so first jump in 9 months). The packers at the DZ F’ed up and let a brand new student learn to pack but forgot to repack it themselves. They put it back on the rack and I was the next to rent it. It was packed with a nasty step through:) Still the only cutaway so far. I’m in the 300s now.
How did you rig up? I see you had the 4 connection points for the belly mounted reserve, did you have a rigger set up your container with those 4 extra clips like a tandem rig? And then it was just a regular three ring system to release the round stowed against the risers? How long had it been since someone jumped that round canopy?
Sorry I never replied. This was rigged up by a master rigger. The belly container was clipped in similar to a tandem with 4 attachments, then the risers from the belly mount when to an additional set of large rings on the harness. The 3 ring release on the extra risers was routed to a pad on the risers of that round. Basically pulling the pads down on the risers, pulled a pin up and out of the 3ring release. I'm not sure how long it had been since that canopy had been jumped. I wish we knew!
@@NoahClarke36812 that would be super gnarly. I’d want to jump it a few times first haha, and for sure aim for that little irrigation ditch. Maybe you guys swoop it I’m not sure. Point is it’s water! 🤙😵💫
So what happened to the round canopy you released from ? Actually when someone does a cutaway due to a malfunction of some kind and goes on reserve, after you land and gather your thoughts etc, do you go and launch an immediate active search for the released main, does someone on the ground track where it lands and retrieves it or is it written off because of the malfunction and a new canopy fitted?
Generally with a normal malfunction and cutaway, everyone who saw it happen will try to approximate where it landed and then some people will go find it, untangle it, and reassemble it. Occasionally the canopy will need repairs either from the malfunction or where it landed. I also have an apple airtag in mine. I’ve found 2 canopies with the use of my drone and will tape a iPhone to the drone if I’m looking for my canopy with an airtag in it. The range on the airtag isn’t great but it’s using every iPhone in the world to find it and there’s no monthly fee. During these planned cutaways we plan where I will exit the aircraft based on the winds at altitude, and we plan where I should be when I cutaway. Everyone on the ground as well as in the sky is kind of chasing the cutaway canopy. You can see that at 3:40 my friend is getting low and is still chasing the canopy, then he decided to try to swoop the ditch where I’m at. I’m always getting better at planning these jumps and recently one land about 20ft from the target.
We level off the wing similar to an aircraft, wait for speed to die and then put the real brakes on. The idea is similar to putting down flaps on a plane and flaring just the same. Go look up swooping.
Maybe he's like those thousand hour pilots who say the have a thousand hours but what they really have is a sharp pencil. If he was drunk or on drugs...then maybe. I sure hope he doesn't have a Pro rating.

Alex Smith it was a tertiary rig with an extra canopy. I’m not just going to reserve without cause. I’m deploying an extra main. Releasing it, deploying a regular main, and then landing with a reserve still packed in case something went wrong. USPA has guidelines for intentional cutaways such as this. They require a tertiary rig and I believe recommend a C License. Although this adds complexity to your regular skydive, I believe it was done with the proper training, preparation and equipment required for it to be successful and with an adequate safety margin.

According to my grandfather (a mortar man with the 82nd in Korea,) you could shove a round parachute into a shopping bag and it'll open correctly.
The round is so reliable that (certainly in Australia) it is used without reserve in jumps over water in the ADF.
