Why are people leaving comments just to diss this man? He knows his stuff, he's obviously just moved in and is working in progress. Let's just sit back and watch how he turns this room into a good listening room. I think that would make a good RUclips mini series. Why the criticism? Personally, I'm interested to see what you do with a challenging space John. Looking forward to the acoustic renovation.
I love the IKEA look, John!
I have a similar situation with echoey stairwell and I just added a curtain and it's the cheapest most significant sound improvement I've ever done. Game changer. Look at a simple curtain solution for your stairwells!
Let me be one of the few viewers and patreon members to say congratulations on your new home. I am sure you will get that room sorted out in good fashion. But what is important is that you get settled in to your new place and that you like. That is really all that matters. Good Luck in Lisbon!!!!!
Nothing wrong with IKEA. Put the money into the gear and acoustic treatments where it matters.
I live in an old building in Lisbon, so I can hear neighbour noise in Dolby Atmos :D
The average rug absorption coefficient graph is my favourite thing from all of the (very many) videos of yours I have watched. I did have to double check the date! Keep up the good work😊
I love how obviously literal many of these comments are. Especially as they are echoing everything you said in the previous video. I constantly get comments regarding my main living space where I love to listen to music in some of my videos too. It is not a dead room and there are partially wood floors, metallic appliances, and a flat-screen TV between my speakers. Viewers' heads explode but I absolutely love listening to music in the room, frequently with guests and cocktails. It's a wonderful living space for me. I don't want to be shut downstairs in a dark room that may be more sound-friendly. Good stuff. Good luck all around!
Rockfon (Danish daughter company to Rockwool) makes great acoustic ceilings that look good. Works great and on top of it you can add extra insulation or drywall, depending on how much dampening you want and what frequency.
First, I wish you well and the best of health. Second, this is a fantastic journey for those of us who are starting over or starting out in our journey. Every decade, I sell every piece and start from scratch. At 60, Im not certain I have many system changes left. I follow with enthusiasm. Peace.
Hey John, will you do some city tour videos of Lisbon to show the local record shop scene, etc?
Looking forward to seeing the room transform. Quite liking the more thoughts videos. Cheers from Canada
Hi John. Really like your audio video's and how you have now included us in your move. Keep adding little clips of Lisbon, makes your channel more personal. Good luck with your room. 😊
I'm broke" Respect John. Keep it real
Excellent video on the topic. It's so good to see that home audio movers and shakers are taking room acoustics more and more as part of the package. About absorption: while I know you meant "volume", just in case anyone else is unsure, it's not "mass" that makes for better absorption, it's the thickness of the material and how well it can resist the flow of sound energy within itself. Mass is the go-to for preventing sound transmission into adjacent spaces.
Hey John, I really love ALL of your videos, and I'd like to see more location filming in the cool and historic areas in Berlin and Lisbon. Also, I've been using Kallax furniture for almost 10-years for my audio needs and I'll leave out a vertical side to double or even triple the shelf length. Although it will show the assembly holes, and I don't mind that.
Love all your videos and congrats on living in two beautiful places. I did notice on your previous video that you pointed your microphone upward for REW measurements. For stereo it is recommended to point the microphone directly at the middle point between the two speakers and at ear listening height. In your case, pointing the microphone up picks up even more reverb. 😂
John, what a great idea to move to Portugal and a home with a great Echo and Reverb. All you need now is some Gregorian chant playing in the background. 👍
Love your "comments on comments" videos John! My favorite was the "Microsoft now a sponsor!"... Priceless! Viewers can be such as#holes! Great choice for a secondary home. Lisbon is a great place! Enjoy your winter home!
John, your new room is perfect - perfect for closed headphones ! ;)
Can't wait for the initial results.
Thanks again for your fantastic, sympathetic work !! You are anpart of my audiophile life !
I love the potential of this new series of videos. I mean, I clearly hear this- your new room. A great teaching tool.
The new room is a challenge, but also an opportunity! Looking forward to seeing and hearing the treatment. Thank you for sharing - this is more helpful than an equipment review, as we all have to deal with a room of some kind.
Hi john love your video looking forward to more.
John : Congratulations on the new place. I like the pattern on your tile floor and the form follows function of your decor. Please tell us sometime why you went to Lisbon for your second home.
To avoid the cold Berlin winter weather
I recently DIY'd a sound absober panel myself and the results were stellar.
If I were in Portugal like you, I'd just ask a local carpenter to build me panel frames out of 2x4 lumber, fill them with 10cm thick rockwool and cover them with white fabric (and put them on the wall). Works a treat, should improve your RT60 massively. But I understand that you'll receive support from professionals already, thus don't need to DIY.
If you like my attitude toward hifi audio and Ikea furniture...Why yes, I do like your attitude toward hifi audio and Ikea furniture. ;-)
I look forward to seeing the new improvements and room treatments!
Can't wait to see what the room treatment does and looks like. Hello from the USA
Love Lisbon and travel there frequently. Maybe I’ll run into you someday! Lol. Excellent video. Love how much you interact with your audience.
Don't take any abuse for your IKEA furniture - I'm sitting here on an Ikea couch listening to my system that is sitting on an Ikea shelving unit ;-). Same reasons. Sounds great!
I do like those tiles!
We have them as our backsplash here in the States. Yep, they were imported :)
Hi there, welcome to Portugal! I am a subscriber in Algarve. I am Ex recording engineer with quality music listening interest!
My son recently spent some time in Lisbon and noted it was becoming a Mecca for Creatives and Consultants, Work from Homers and Tech types. And then you move there ! So I guess he was right. Looks like a great move to me. You look like a weight has lifted off your shoulders. Best wishes. Look forward to the new sunnier content.
John, enjoy your Lisbon home. You are getting the best of two worlds. Take care and keep us posted. Cheers! :-)
Sometimes the acoustic treatment has to bring the reverberation time up. At the german state opera in Berlin, they brought it up from 1.1 to 1.6 s. Live Classic needs 2s Live Jazz 1s and Pop/Rock under 1s reverberation…
I say!
Glad to see you now read the comments section John.
Looking forward to hearing the improvements wrought by proper room acoustic treatments. Cool that you prioritize this over fancy furniture.
Using GiK abfusors & Primacoustic London kits here in Montana USA.
Maggie LRS don't need ceiling treatment thankfully.
🎶😉🎶
Have yet to hear you use the term reflection(s). Plants do actually work to diffuse reflections like Ficus Benjamina. I use them behind my Zu Omens and another at the point of reflection off a window. Plants work to diffuse but like you said, they don’t absorb anything. Would be nice of you to chat about the differences and the relationship of diffusion v absorption. Good stuff once again, John.
I've been contemplating how to hang room treatment in a rental home where it's possible to remove them and not damage the walls/paint
In Germany you're generally allowed to do that.
Was in Lisbon last summer, fab place, trams are great,, magic views from the Castle too, fast train to Porto is a great day also.
Oh thumbs up John, keep on keeping on,👍
Welcome to Portugal John! I live close to Lisbon across the river.
I love the ‘Dear John’ follow ups, almost as much as the originals.
A lot of stereo receivers from the 70s & 80s had reverb settings to add reverb to the sound.
Been out of commission for a bit, didn't know you moved! Cool place! Clean slate! Fun adventure getting it how you like it!
Welcome to Portugal!! All the best for this new life chapter and hope you can feel at home at this new home! (Don't forget to visit Porto 🤭)
Ps: you should have move 2 years ago or more, the houses prices increased a lot in the last year's 😅🫣
Keep up entertaining us with your nice videos and being genuine!
Wow some people are really mean considering that room is actually someone's home.
People can be mean😔
"....then please consider giving this video a.....", thumbs up, John, thats what one says promoting their videos. Beautiful city Lisabon. Have a dinner at the Indian/Nepalese restaurant called Odaan!!
Looking forward to the room correction video. Is it the same firm you used in Berlin? Will you be showing pre and post measurements? Glad to hear Olaf is still part of the team!!!
In my opinion there's nothing wrong with the furniture/concept of Ikea, also in terms of the footprint on the worldwide environment. I'm very happy with my combined Ikea audio rack/record storage. The total (dead) mass is so high, that (sound) vibrations have no significant influence/feedback on my sound setup (especially my turntable). Spending less on expensive furniture saves more money for my/our hobby. And let us be honest, everyone has a budget ;-). And I'm not an employee of Ikea, if you might think so :-).
Would have been fun to find some music that complimented the reverb. Something slow and simple. Ambient piano perhaps. Something spacey.
Hey, you seem ok to share quite a bit of personal information, I wonder if you mine sharing how much the acoustic treatment costs. Just curious, because you mentioned your personal finances and furniture choices.
Dear John,
This is one hell of a topic! How to correct and improve a crappy-sounding room.
A few notes: in the first video, you keep mentioning how the sound reverberates and that we, the viewers, must notice as well. I must say: it depends. I watched to the first part on my iphone, and it was not so obvious. But for part 2, I was in front of my TV, connected by a 3.5 mm/RCA cable to a pair of Audioengine A5+ and wow! It was as if 10 Johns were speaking at the same time! (side note to the note: these speakers should be included more often in entry-level system discussions. My wife actually enjoys them more then the LS50W upstairs). Also, if the room is actually more (or very) important to sound quality than your amp or source, it think it would be interesting to mention the price of room correction, like any other component. I certainly do not want you to reveal how you choose to invest your money. But it would help people make choices, same as with hifi components. And maybe push it further: maybe some brands are better than others. Just like some plants block high frequencies better than others...
Would love to see your kitchen like in Berlin or at least your fancy coffee maker…
LISBOA !!!!! My homeCity ;)
I love your Berlin place….❤
Some of these comments are just off the wall (should we call some of these people “nodes”). You display a well-developed sense of restraint here. Looking forward to this new project!
Nice one, John. I'm enjoying this series. Not wanting to be a "nit picker" about the audio influence of plants but perhaps the containers of soil which house the plants have a greater influence than the plants? I've roughly calculated that my 'listening room' (my office) contains about 30 litres of compost. In comparison this post contains about 0.25 litres. 🙂
You may like some of the stuff at Area Store. You can visit them in Colombo the next time you’re shopping for furniture. Cheers!
i particularly like your attitude to f-ing up the end of the video John
Love your everyman attitude to Hi-Fi and life John. Keep up the high quality content, its entertaining fun, and relaxing. Btw, how about a viewer prize of having their listening room, acoustically treated? LOL. Oh and I loved that New Order sample.
Boy I’m moving house too, the new house sounds pretty much like yours right there. Seriously considering Vicoustic treatment too.
Hi John. Listening to you talk about the sound problems in Lisbon makes me want to watch Wim Wenders' "Lisbon Story" again.
New digs, how exciting.
in my experience books do a lot to help in the acoustic environment. if your reading person using phsycal media having a bookcase with books or even record collection helps the acoustics of a room
Can't wait to see your treatment.
Like your speakers!!
What amp do u use?
Here's an idea, get some nice rug tapestry. Hang on the walls.
That will eliminate a lot of echo.
Cheep too.
Floor is fine,. Just the walls .IMHO
HI John.
Welcome to Lisbon,
I’ve been following your channel for a few years, I’m an audio lover, and I really like your frontality, I’m from Lisbon, if you need any help, tell me I’ll be happy to help ;-)
Echo correction in rooms is a real nightmare 😂😂😂
You're now in the right country for acoustic treatment!! Getting some Vicoustics like in Berlin? You could do an episode in their facilities. That would be interesting
Hi John, thanks very much for another great video. Perhaps you could tell us about how room correction technology such as Dirac is able to help with your room reverb problem. I cannot see how it can help a situation where the room is adding an echo, I would have thought it could boost frequencies that are missing but not artifices being added by the room.
Great video John. Just moved my Tannoy Saturns into a boomy lounge and facing same issues.
It would be interesting to see how room perfect deals/doesn’t deal with your reverb. It did quite well in my room.
The Most Important Item in the Audio Listening Chain; the Brain, It's your All important "audio processor"
I know you will V/Coustic the hell out of this room John! No doubt about it!
Maybe regarding the stairways, hanging doors could be a solution? Just a thought 👍 congratulations on the half move to lisbon, good choice.
I would like to recommend corner "bass traps" from De-Fi Systems. They're a fairly new, US company. Their products use a novel design and in my room, they made a really big difference! They claim a fairly even, full range of absorption down to 40hz. That seems a little optimistic to me, but I haven't measured. All I know is that my sound is much cleaner and more alive than it was before. They look cool too!
The trick to a crappy listening room is to listen (very) nearfield. This bypasses the room interaction.
When they tried to correct the bad acoustics in the Albert Hall they treated the ceiling.
And it didn’t work
Love the incremental approach you've shown us so far of the room treatment (bare to some furniture to eventually wall treatment).
Is Olaf able to come out for shooting in your new location?
Record yourself in your own listening room and you will have an idea of where you stand with decay time and echo
Morning hope you are well 😁 I get your new listening room is an echo chamber just now but over time it will be fixed 😀 which brings me to my question, will you be making a video on the progress of the room being treated like you did in your last home ? I think it would be interesting anyway good luck on your new adventure and please take care and stay safe 😁
Hi, it would be interesting to hear what differences you found in a piece of music you know really well pre/post room treatment!
I used to work for charity that cared for people with disabilities. When everyone was in the dining room the noise levels made it impossible to talk to anyone. They solved the problem by treating the ceiling with treatment that looked like waves and problem solved.
Hello John, you get your room treated professionally. Do you have tips for low budget solutions? How about hanging sails out of molton garmet below the ceiling? Thanks for your thoughts.
Looking forward to the results of the subwoofer experiments. I had always followed the advice of putting a subwoofer on the floor in a corner to use that placement as a low frequency horn. But the expected enhancements always seemed to be missing.
Checking the w-w-web, there's a myth regarding a subwoofer placement crawl. The myth requires placing a subwoofer where your head would be during listening and then work your way around the room listening for the spots that catch the lower frequencies.
My room in feet is 9' high X 18' wide(speaker wall) X 33' deep. Using the crawl, the low frequency hot spots were on the floor halfway along the long wall behind the prime listening position AND in the speaker wall corners but midway between the floor and ceiling. As I didn't want the subs' upper directional frequencies to come from behind, the subs remain in the front corners but are now on risers 36" off the floor.
Re the risers, I passed on Ikea and went with Amazon.
The room looks promising. It is great to start with new room and make it properly acoustic. Will you trim the grass....(the rug...)
I still have a Surface Book 2. Not upgrading yet.
Any good record stores near by your new place. Keep up the good work in your soon to be acoustically treated swimming pool.
🙋♂️JOHN…GREAT TO SEE YOUR VIDEOS, AND YOUR THOUGHTS ON OTHERS OPINIONS 😂…
STAY WELL AND ENJOY YOUR TIME IN LISTENBON 💚💚💚
John, have you thought about make an opening on the the wall just behind the sofa where your head would be at the listening position? Just a small rectangular opening, just to have some space behind your head, and I think it would look nice as well as a decorative point of view, just a thought.
Yes, your voice indicates you should add more absorption and diffusion. Can't do good reviews until then. Cheers Darko!
Speaking about IKEA. They sell some accoustic curtains. Has anybody tried them?
Nice. I didn't know.
Apartments in Lisbon have 3 floors!?
Love your mix of hardware reviews and comparisons with your nudge to give certain artists / tracks a listen.
I have stopped buying hardware and (thanks to you) am now focused on my room acoustics. The room is in a finished basement with a suspended “commercial looking” tile ceiling. Would you guess additional ceiling treatment would be required? Thanks. Jack 1:20
Dear John, welcome to Lisbon!
I, m a bit confused with the feeling of Reviewers of audio equipment on RUclips that making huge modifications to rooms to eek out the ‘natural’ sounds of the equipment. I would be very interested in knowing the ratio of subscribers whom have made 11:15 room alternating mods to their rooms at their residences?
Lol. I thought in the first video that the tablet was a product placement as well. Not begrudgingly. I thought "oh good for John". I mean this is your livelihood so have at it, maybe they should and you could get an updated tablet....
Really enjoy watching the journey, best of luck I'm sure it will turn out great.
You know John why not ask those who complain about what you spend on furniture to each send in $2000-$5000 so you can get what you want….!
When is the subwoofer episode coming? That must be fun in that room with so much pressurization potential 🤭
could you comment on quality of life in Lisbon? I've visited there before along with Barcelona and Madrid. Always wonder what it was like to live there as an expat.
Listening to music closed in a room in Lisbon!! Bring your headphones to one of our terraces and you'll see that only in Lisbon can you get that sound and sunlight. Get out of the house, you're not in cold Germany!😎
Love the low level rumble moments
