  • I needed to replace the shelf I have for my lathe's quick change tool holders. Coincidentally, ArcCaptain reached out to me and asked me to review their MIG 200 welding machine. I decided to compare it to the PrimeWeld MIG 180. I share what I saw and got a nice new lathe shelf in the process.

    Good review. I am just a hobbyist and you popped up on my feed because I have been looking at both of these manufacturers to determine my next purchase. I liked the fact that the primeweld fan was strong enough to cause you an issue (air flow protects my investment). You just got another subscriber.

      Thanks for watching and subscribing. There are a lot of things to consider when looking at one of these machines. The synergic mode on the ArcCaptain is nice, especially for a beginner welder (or even the experienced), and the price is budget friendly. The customer service and support from PrimeWeld is second to none, in any industry, and free return shipping for the length of the warranty is what sold me years ago. I didn't pick a winner, because I think that would be different for different people.

    When I received my Prime Weld it had a 10' Mig cable and the Gas regulator was defective. The duty cycle on the Prime Weld is 30%, the Arc Captain is 60%. Great comparison, Thank You

    Both of these welders look great, with enough practice both would do the job just fine
    I've been to welding school this summer and other than getting a license I also learned one very important thing (not an expert AT ALL)
    For penetration on thicker stuff you really need a gap, a stronger welder can penetrate deeper yes, but for a proper penetration you need a gap. On corners I have not yet tried what gap would be needed and it really depends on the thickness and with THICK material you'll also need a bevel, but usually for stuff most of us need to weld, maybe a 2x wire dia. wide gap should get you a LOT more penetration than no gap. it also allows for way more adjustment after you tack it in place.
    But for comparing welders, it doesn't matter as long as the setup is roughly the same and the technique used is the same
    from this really nice video and the tests you've done I would be able to pick one of these
    Thank you for your work

    I have used many different brand MIG welders. One thing I notice is that Voltage setting across different brands and even different machines of the same brand can vary widely. Even the manufacturer recommended settings. If I set my Miller 350P to the voltages these machines are showing, I would be well into spray transfer MIG. these look like they are still in short circuit mode. I run around 14.5-15.5 volts on thinner steel. 1/4" with .035 wire is 19.5v and 330IPM on the MIller

    • @MyLilMule
      @MyLilMule  2 месяца назад

      I would agree. If I were to use the same wire and setting in all three of the machines I have that have that kind of adjustment (my old Hobart didn't have this ability as an example, just "A-B-C-D") they would all weld differently. I don't even think the two charts I have for the two Primeweld machines are the same.

  • @tonystites2134

    I'm looking at getting the primeweld 180. if you had bigger wire do you think it would weld the 3/8 and get good penetration or do you think 3/8 is just to much for the machine

    • @MyLilMule
      @MyLilMule  Месяц назад

      3/8" might be pushing it only a little. HOWEVER, if I beveled any joints, used .035 flux cored wire, and maybe did a little preheat, I'd have no problem welding 3/8" material - unless it was structural. Then I might just stick weld it at that point. Instead of flux core, you can also use pure CO2 as the shielding gas instead of C25. You'll get more penetration with pure CO2, but it will spatter more.
      Personally, I try to go by the rule that if my weld were to fail and someone could die or seriously injured, I don't go beyond the limits of a machine. It's not worth getting sued or going to jail or someone's life.

    Not to be a buzz kill. You left out 2 features of the arkcaptain. One of the spot welding. 2 is it can weld aluminum. With oor without a spool gun. And come with drive wheels for that. Just an FYI

    • @MyLilMule
      @MyLilMule  8 месяцев назад +1

      No worries. I left those out because I don't consider them features "out of the box." What they call spot welding is not spot welding. It's just a timed weld. And welding with aluminum wire through a whip , you would need to replace the liner to do that. You can't run aluminum wire through the same liner as you run steel wire. The contaminations left behind by the steel will ruin any aluminum weld. Thanks for watching!

    • @MyLilMule
      @MyLilMule  6 месяцев назад +2

      @@bokresge3716 You'd need an extra liner for the whip that you would change out for welding aluminum, or a spool gun with aluminum wire in it. The spool gun is the better option.

    i also own a Lincoln mig welder, 110 volt only, flux or gas,m no other functions. i paid more for the Lincoln over 15 years ago than i did this week for the mig 200. i have never liked the lincoln very muc as it just barely welds thin plate.

    Unfortunately your set up for the Primeweld 180 was way off, and reason it did not weld properly. You had that at 26v / 400+ that would be spray arc territory, and you didn't have the correct gas to run that and really at the max of the machines capabilities.

      @MyLilMule  12 дней назад +1

      @@mcsqueegee81 They have a different feature set, so I am not sure how that comparison would go. The MTS has some stick welding features that the 200 doesn't and the 200 has some MIG features that the MTS doesn't. I would like to get my hands on the 205 though and compare it to my 200.
