It was gonna happen anyway. The Bear feared that FL would find their way and although Charlie Pell was a cheater, FL was gonna come online Spurrier or not.

Yeah, we thought Spurrier and Fulmer were pretty damn good coaches, but little did we know.
*Spurrier, 11-10 in bowls. and 29 SEC conf games and guess who owns worst loss 56-17.
*Fulmer, 8-7 in bowls. An overall losing record to Spurrier, Richt, Saban, Meyer, Miles, Tuberville, Paterno, Osborne, Solich, Weiss, and Tyrone Willingham.

Spurrier can't stop moving for 2 seconds. I don't know how many times he brushed his hair back and then picked up the pen only to put it right back down and put his hands together.

The Ole Ball Coach. One of the most overrated coaches ever.
    * 11-10 in bowls (6-5 at FL). How can a coach be consider great when he is 1 over 500 against what was probably the strongest or 2nd strongest OOC game of the year?
    * unbelievable loss in the NEB game. NEB beat 3 other ranked teams CO, KSU, KS. The rest of the teams were a complete joke. OU was unranked with a 1st year coach.
    * unbelievable loss in the SEC Championship game. Lost 56-17. Still the worst loss in the games history.
    * choke at the Doak, 14 mins left in the game, FSU scores 28 pts to tie the game.
    * had winning record against Fulmer, Richt while at FL. Both ultimately lost their jobs bec of their body of work, not just bec of their records against Spurrier.
    * losing record to Bowden, who had a losing rec to every Cane coach with a NC, count em 4.

Here are my thoughts. I liked and disliked him at the same time. He remade the Gators from that lil engine that could, into relevant perennial contenders for the first time in their history, so you can't argue with that at all. They weren't beating anyone of significance without him. And no one was beating that Nebraska team in 95, they were too tough for any team, most gator fans at times were hopeful the offense could give them a chance, but knew it was daunting. I'm sure the players felt the same as it was their first time ever at the big dance, they're all young uns after all. Sure the results overall could've been a lot better but hindsight is always 20-20. It had always seemed that untimely things derailed them at inopportune times whether it be injuries to critical players, corrupt ACC refs(who were eventually replaced by PAC 10 refs for FSU games), and bad timing(9/11 that rescheduled the UT game) - a couple of those going his way, he could've very likely won one more crystal trophy. But perhaps that was a result of karma catching up with him for being an arrogant SOB in the way he conducted himself, with all the smacktalk he did over the years("half a hundred on UGA" "Ray Goof" "Can't spell Citrus without UT"). Although it was fun for the fanbase and gave his team his swagger, it also gifted locker room material to opposing teams making things tougher later down the road. He was a perfectionist, maybe too much of one. One mistake and you're in the doghouse...and he went the extra mile to throw his special brand of verbal digs into his own players. Whereas other top coaches at that time would say focus on winning the conference and get to your big Bowl game, Spurrier would say only the national championship matters, so win the conference and get there...but reach an win big 4 bowl game without a crystal ball at stake? Sorry, no bowl rings for you like everyone else gets because only that crystal ball matters. The players would never say it but it was both a motivating and demotivating factor I would say. Only Spurrier could make a big 4 bowl game seem like a really insignificant downer. Could a better coach have been had? Possibly. But who else was willing going to go to UF when Spurrier got hired? And better the devil you know and all that, and that devil put UF on the map and kept them there for a long while which is something UF is rightfully eternally grateful for.
