Thank you again for an informative presentation. My gut tells me that your costs ($10,000/month high cost country, $5,000/month low cost country is spot on). My wife and I live in Switzerland and are not retired. When we holiday, we travel to mostly to very high cost countries (Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, England, Holland, Norway, Spain). I keep good records. Our costs are about $500/day/couple. This includes everything. We indulge ourselves slightly by traveling long haul high speed train routes in first class-exception: we are heading to London in a few weeks and the Eurostar first class tickets were crazy expensive. We eat two meals a day: breakfast and lunch. In the countries we travel to, lunch is generally the bargain meal. In the evening, we grab something light (bread, cheese, fruit),

We travel slowly and stay always minimum 1 month at every place, mostly much longer. We go always to low-cost countries. Packing is not an issue for us because we both have less as 10 kg stuff, but we just like to stay long at one place. Our budget is just 750 euro per month for two people and we don't have the feeling we can't do everything we like. We always have a nice room, we enjoy every day and can eat everything we like, ... We're always surprised from these 'big budget' - althought in our eyes - from other travellers.

I am 73 and just went to London and Paris for 3 weeks for 2000 dollars including airfare. I have coffee at my AirBNB and fast until the evening, and got all my food from outdoor markets and cooked at home. One luxury was a18 euro pastry from Cedric Grolet. I love Airbnb and the other apt apps. Enjoying your videos. I love the metro and buses.
You could save even more on food by, on some days, making lunch your primary meal of the day. Snack for breakfast, large lunch, snack for dinner. It’s plenty of food.
Great suggestion. The reason we do breakfast is that it is included in most hotels that we stay. It is a "free" meal for us. We try to go as late as possible (usually 10:30 or 11:00) to kind of make it a "brunch". If we were staying at an apartment with kitchen, we would do what you are saying. My spouse and I have travelled to 30 countries over the last 30 months. We typically stay in a community on average 14 days. We travelled for a 54 weeks continually during Covid and it was cheap but we could only pick our pick countries when they opened up and they each demanded a test. We spent an average $5,800 month. That included 6 self-guided week-long hiking trips. When we were gone for a year we rented our home.

Your comments about vaccinations are bang on. One example - We opted for rabies shots because we were traveling in remote areas where we couldnt access an antidote if bitten. That shot cost us several hundred each. Vaccinations must be a part of the budget!
We are slow travelers but not due to budget. We travel slowly because we don’t want to pack/move every week. The savings for a monthly stay is just an added bonus.
As a solo traveler, I love to have lunch out at a busy cafe-it makes me feel connected. Same with half day group tours-tradeoffs pricewise but I find essential for my mental health! I’ve have to look for your Airbnb story-I’ve been finding great deals (albeit shoulder season) and great locations. However, staying for a month is my other strategy. I will pay $1700 for a month in Tuscany (Montepulciano), March/April, for a top rated airbnb. You guys are great…as Rick Steves’ says “keep on traveling!”
We retired 7 years ago and have become traveling pet sitters. We have drastically cut our accommodation costs by trading pet sitting for free accommodations. We get to live like locals in our dream destinations and are able to spends weeks instead of days. It has truly changed our lives!

Yes, I really agree with making friends and being able to stay with them on visits to their countries. I have mixed hotel stays and staying with friends when I travel. I even offer to fix something for them. It helps strengthen the relationship.
I spent two months in 2017 and went all the way around the world. It cost me $8000 or $133 per day and most of my money went to airfare. Airbnb was way cheaper back then so 90% of my lodging costs were Airbnb. I’m currently planning international trips and hotels are my main option. I spent five weeks in Europe then three weeks going eastward. Back then Americans, Germans, and Chinese were the main kinds of people I encountered besides locals. I got zero vaccinations and never got sick nor have been sick since then. I loved the Paris subway the best. Your advice is spot on. Thanks.
Great video thanks. It is interesting to see how much it costs doing it this way. I also follow Grounded Life Travel and Brian and Carrie. Both are slow travellers and Brian and Carrie are budget travellers. Their costs are - on average - USD 4k and USD 2.5k per month. I would also suggest signing up for hotel loyalty emails. We saved 30% (over £1000) on our first choice central London hotel by taking advantage of their Black Friday special 😊
We have a light breakfast, a nice lunch and a snack for dinner. Lunch portions are the right size and then we have no guilt at having an ice cream cone for dinner!
Your videos are so well done. As full-time slow-mads now entering our 4th year, we find that our travel costs are generally about what we anticipated (about $100K a year) with one glaring, off-the-charts exception: entertainment. We find we are willing to spend a little more for good tickets at concerts, smaller tours, and one-of-a-kind experiences (e.g. Formula One race in Monza, Bruce Springsteen in Barcelona, 18 Fringe shows in Edinburgh!). We doubled our budget to $5000 for this line-item this year. We plan to off-set by planning 3-4 weeks more of pet-sitting annually, bringing our total unpaid accommodations via pet-sitting to 12 weeks. It’s fun and keeps out budget in line. But, yes. . . $10K a month in high-cost countries is about right. The best thing about owning no real-estate and being in our go-go years like you (also no grandchildren or living parents) is that if we need to, we can reduce our expenses in a heartbeat. We also eat twice a day and when we eat out, we always split an entree. Every flight and every hotel room this year will be paid via credit card points! Every year we’re getting better at this. I am assuming you use the same card for everything. Do you go with a generic travel card or do you have one tied to a hotel chair or airline? Any recommendations on best way to take advantage of the credit card points?

Living in Thailand and as a couple traveling around Southeast Asia, I don’t know how or what you would do to spend more than $3,000/month. Most months we are at $2000-2500 living well, eating out 100% of the time. As far as vaccinations, we are about 10 years younger than you and after talking with our doctor about vaccinations and all their side affects(everything including aspirin has side affects) we chose to trust our healthy immune systems but that’s a personal choice obviously. Great video! We do 3-4 one month trips per year having downsized drastically in order to afford to do so. We concentrate on one geographic area for each trip which keeps the cost of air travel down somewhat. Of course, air travel has really bitten into our travel budget in the last two years. (Would love to see more on ways to keep the costs down!) Experiences over possessions is a great thing.

Santorini is October or November is very cold and you are risking the ferries being canceled because of high winds. Santorini off shoulder is better in April. It’s less crowded, windy and you do need a sweater but much less cold than the months you suggested.

I have just hit financial independence and retired early at 58. My current plan is to travel about 40% of the time, maximizing the off-peak shoulder travel seasons. Your yearly budget seems spot on as the budget for my plans is proportionate for what you detail. If any of your return trips to the US take you to NYC, you have a place to stay! Let’s compare. We live in a mid cost town in the US. No mortgage. Between upkeep, insurances, vehicles, utilities… bare bones is about 3500 a month.Include lessons, hobbies, trips to the other coast to visit family, pets, gym, Costco…. We are much closer to 7000+. Monthly. What I am saying is your budget is very reasonable.
I finally got around to analyzing our expenses for our winter trip. We spent on average $8900 a month. This is ALL of our expenses, including health insurance, storage for our van back home etc. We are not budget travelers and for much of the winter we rented a car. I feel like your ballpark of $5K to $10K is a good. I think that there are a lot of people out there that dream about world travel but, think they can't afford it. In reality without the expenses of owning a home you can.

Thank you for not glossing over numbers, without large numbers of exclusions and caveats. A LOT of nomads seem to deem many expenses "it depends" and as a result exclude them. Problem is many of these expenses are significant and still applicable to virtually every traveler, even if they DO depend. Appreciate the honesty, keep up the good work!

We are retired tourist travelers, cruising more than anything with 2 big 30-45 day trips per year. Then a week or so hanging out somewhere. Love your videos. I'm fortunate to have learned the hobby of points & miles so our flights are always biz class on miles & hotels are always with loyalty perks. It's amazing how much this type of travel can save you. I don't know that you mentioned which travel credit card you are actually using. The $350 fee, didn't give it away. I will check your site to learn more. Been to midleeast, Africa, Europe, Australia, Japan, you name it but... ther is no better place than being home and sleep in your own bed... IN regards to vaccinations: yellow fever for Kenia was difficult. I had sideeffects, lasting for about a month... (like minor encephalitis) caution for Bev with MS... Good Luck!
I have been using this software since you posted it and it is outstanding. Thanks Bev! The free version no longer offers the “ date timeline” column as of July 2024 but there is an easy work around - simply enter this info in a text field. I created 2 text fields: a date start and a date end field. In addition to calclate my exposure for trip cancellation/ interuption insurance I have added 3 text fields that show: date cancel deadline; $ exposure for cancellation; $ exposure for interruption. I then buy insurance accordingly. Thanks!

But medical issues have diminished our mobility and ability to go-go. Did not know about Bev's medical issue. Maybe we need to reassess our travel capability! Excellent summaries of costs and suggestions for full-time travelers. When young I had an art/design prof who said...plan your project costs then double it.wise recommendation for a newbie. As experience took hold, we refined it to 20-25%. We never had a monetary shock we couldn't handle. We applied that philosophy to travel. Great information! It is relatively easy to travel via public transportation, as there is so much information available online. When we stayed in Iceland the hotel gave us an unlimited free pass to use on public transportation. Hotels sometimes have perks like this and it is worth asking. Safe travels! --M

Whether it's $200k or $120k $50k a year spending to travel, one must keep in mind, in order to spend that much, your personal account or portiffilio needs to have an additional 25 to 30% for taxes (federal plus many states have state taxes) If one spends $100, they actually had to make at least $125 to be able to spend that $100

I'm sure you'll get to this in your vaccinations video--but before we went to Thailand, we decided which vaccines we needed to get beforehand and which we'd get there (if we'd have a couple low-risk weeks for whatever we were vaccinating against--Japanese encephalitis was that category for us). The travel clinic there was way, way, way cheaper and super-confidence-inspiring. Also, in the U.S., some vaccines need to be gotten at a pharmacy and are covered there (e.g., shingles), and others are only covered at a doctor's office even though a pharmacy will give it (e.g., Hep A, if memory serves); and vaccines needed only for travel (not in the recommended list in the U.S.) aren't covered at all. Confusing but key to figure out!

Another great and practical video! Besides getting vaccinated, would be helpful to learn how do you stay so healthy and energetic on road? Travel is often hard on the health, especially a concern for older folks; with jet lag, strange foods, viruses, not used to the weather, and minor accidents, etc. but the two of you always seem amazingly in great health on the road! Must have some good tips.

Hello John and Bev, My wife and I have enjoyed many of your videos so we have vicariously lived through you. We have traveled for a month at a time and have enjoyed the slower aspect of that. I want to visit countries that are more what my wife calls 3rd world countries like Vietnam, Cambodia and India. But I wife doesn’t. We have visited Thailand and Bali. To her the pure heat, humidity and dirty infrastructure is a bit much. I’m looking for recommendations. Countries like Malaysia are like year around heat. When I go on foreign vacations, I akways stay at least 4 weeks in one place. Apart from letting me get more of a sense of what the place is actually like, this also lets me take the advantage of Airbnb's monthly reduced rates, which can be as much as 50% off the regular daily price.

Thank you again for an informative presentation. My gut tells me that your costs ($10,000/month high cost country, $5,000/month low cost country is spot on). My wife and I live in Switzerland and are not retired. When we holiday, we travel to mostly to very high cost countries (Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, England, Holland, Norway, Spain). I keep good records. Our costs are about $500/day/couple. This includes everything. We indulge ourselves slightly by traveling long haul high speed train routes in first class-exception: we are heading to London in a few weeks and the Eurostar first class tickets were crazy expensive. We eat two meals a day: breakfast and lunch. In the countries we travel to, lunch is generally the bargain meal. In the evening, we grab something light (bread, cheese, fruit),

We travel slowly and stay always minimum 1 month at every place, mostly much longer. We go always to low-cost countries. Packing is not an issue for us because we both have less as 10 kg stuff, but we just like to stay long at one place. Our budget is just 750 euro per month for two people and we don't have the feeling we can't do everything we like. We always have a nice room, we enjoy every day and can eat everything we like, ... We're always surprised from these 'big budget' - althought in our eyes - from other travellers.

I have coffee at my AirBNB and fast until the evening, and got all my food from outdoor markets and cooked at home. One luxury was a18 euro pastry from Cedric Grolet. You could save even more on food by, on some days, making lunch your primary meal of the day. Snack for breakfast, large lunch, snack for dinner. It’s plenty of food.
Great suggestion. The reason we do breakfast is that it is included in most hotels that we stay. It is a "free" meal for us. We try to go as late as possible (usually 10:30 or 11:00) to kind of make it a "brunch". If we were staying at an apartment with kitchen, we would do what you are saying.

I’m the 1970-1980’s when I was an over the road trucker I ate one large meal either at breakfast or lunch then snacks for evening meal.
My spouse and I have travelled to 30 countries over the last 30 months. We typically stay in a community on average 14 days. We travelled for a 54 weeks continually during Covid and it was cheap but we could only pick our pick countries when they opened up and they each demanded a test. We spent an average $5,800 month. That included 6 self-guided week-long hiking trips. When we were gone for a year we rented our home.

Your comments about vaccinations are bang on. One example - We opted for rabies shots because we were traveling in remote areas where we couldnt access an antidote if bitten. That shot cost us several hundred each. Vaccinations must be a part of the budget!

As a solo traveler, I love to have lunch out at a busy cafe-it makes me feel connected. Same with half day group tours-tradeoffs pricewise but I find essential for my mental health! I’ve have to look for your Airbnb story-I’ve been finding great deals (albeit shoulder season) and great locations. However, staying for a month is my other strategy. I will pay $1700 for a month in Tuscany (Montepulciano), March/April, for a top rated airbnb. You guys are great…as Rick Steves’ says “keep on traveling!”
We retired 7 years ago and have become traveling pet sitters. We have drastically cut our accommodation costs by trading pet sitting for free accommodations. We get to live like locals in our dream destinations and are able to spends weeks instead of days. It has truly changed our lives!

Yes, I really agree with making friends and being able to stay with them on visits to their countries. I have mixed hotel stays and staying with friends when I travel. I even offer to fix something for them. It helps strengthen the relationship.

I spent two months in 2017 and went all the way around the world. It cost me $8000 or $133 per day and most of my money went to airfare. Airbnb was way cheaper back then so 90% of my lodging costs were Airbnb. I’m currently planning international trips and hotels are my main option. I spent five weeks in Europe then three weeks going eastward. Back then Americans, Germans, and Chinese were the main kinds of people I encountered besides locals. I got zero vaccinations and never got sick nor have been sick since then. I loved the Paris subway the best. Your advice is spot on. Thanks.

Both are slow travellers and Brian and Carrie are budget travellers. Their costs are - on average - USD 4k and USD 2.5k per month. Your videos are so well done. As full-time slow-mads now entering our 4th year, we find that our travel costs are generally about what we anticipated (about $100K a year) with one glaring, off-the-charts exception: entertainment. We find we are willing to spend a little more for good tickets at concerts, smaller tours, and one-of-a-kind experiences (e.g. Formula One race in Monza, Bruce Springsteen in Barcelona, 18 Fringe shows in Edinburgh!). We doubled our budget to $5000 for this line-item this year. We plan to off-set by planning 3-4 weeks more of pet-sitting annually, bringing our total unpaid accommodations via pet-sitting to 12 weeks. It’s fun and keeps out budget in line.
But, yes. . . $10K a month in high-cost countries is about right. The best thing about owning no real-estate and being in our go-go years like you (also no grandchildren or living parents) is that if we need to, we can reduce our expenses in a heartbeat. We also eat twice a day and when we eat out, we always split an entree. Every flight and every hotel room this year will be paid via credit card points! Every year we’re getting better at this. Living in Thailand and as a couple traveling around Southeast Asia, I don’t know how or what you would do to spend more than $3,000/month. Most months we are at $2000-2500 living well, eating out 100% of the time. As far as vaccinations, we are about 10 years younger than you and after talking with our doctor about vaccinations and all their side affects(everything including aspirin has side affects) we chose to trust our healthy immune systems but that’s a personal choice obviously. Keep up the great videos.

Great video! We do 3-4 one month trips per year having downsized drastically in order to afford to do so. We concentrate on one geographic area for each trip which keeps the cost of air travel down somewhat. Of course, air travel has really bitten into our travel budget in the last two years. (Would love to see more on ways to keep the costs down!) Experiences over possessions is a great thing.

Santorini is October or November is very cold and you are risking the ferries being canceled because of high winds. Santorini off shoulder is better in April. It’s less crowded, windy and you do need a sweater but much less cold than the months you suggested.

Let’s compare. We live in a mid cost town in the US. No mortgage. Between upkeep, insurances, vehicles, utilities… bare bones is about 3500 a month.Include lessons, hobbies, trips to the other coast to visit family, pets, gym, Costco…. We are much closer to 7000+. Monthly. What I am saying is your budget is very reasonable.

I finally got around to analyzing our expenses for our winter trip. We spent on average $8900 a month. This is ALL of our expenses, including health insurance, storage for our van back home etc. We are not budget travelers and for much of the winter we rented a car.
I feel like your ballpark of $5K to $10K is a good. I think that there are a lot of people out there that dream about world travel but, think they can't afford it. In reality without the expenses of owning a home you can.

We are retired tourist travelers, cruising more than anything with 2 big 30-45 day trips per year. Then a week or so hanging out somewhere. Love your videos. I'm fortunate to have learned the hobby of points & miles so our flights are always biz class on miles & hotels are always with loyalty perks. It's amazing how much this type of travel can save you. I don't know that you mentioned which travel credit card you are actually using. The $350 fee, didn't give it away. I will check your site to learn more. Been to midleeast, Africa, Europe, Australia, Japan, you name it but... ther is no better place than being home and sleep in your own bed... IN regards to vaccinations: yellow fever for Kenia was difficult. I had sideeffects, lasting for about a month... (like minor encephalitis) caution for Bev with MS... Good Luck!

I have been using this software since you posted it and it is outstanding. Thanks Bev! The free version no longer offers the “ date timeline” column as of July 2024 but there is an easy work around - simply enter this info in a text field. I created 2 text fields: a date start and a date end field. In addition to calclate my exposure for trip cancellation/ interuption insurance I have added 3 text fields that show: date cancel deadline; $ exposure for cancellation; $ exposure for interruption. I then buy insurance accordingly. Thanks!

We've gotten our teeth cleaned in many places, we've had some routine care on the road, and even an ER visit. We'll be doing a video on this soon. But medical issues have diminished our mobility and ability to go-go. Did not know about Bev's medical issue. Maybe we need to reassess our travel capability! Perhaps not travel internationally, but here in the states: maybe we need to toss our fears away and just do it...

As experience took hold, we refined it to 20-25%. We never had a monetary shock we couldn't handle. We applied that philosophy to travel. When we stayed in Iceland the hotel gave us an unlimited free pass to use on public transportation. Hotels sometimes have perks like this and it is worth asking. Safe travels! --M

@@Katrina-ps6jn Sure! It is Reykjavik Natura. When we went in 2014 the hotel was owned by Iceland Air. Not sure if they still own it. We booked a package deal with Iceland Air that included flights, hotel, seeing the northern lights via boat, and the Blue Lagoon hot springs. Enjoy!

Whether it's $200k or $120k $50k a year spending to travel, one must keep in mind, in order to spend that much, your personal account or portiffilio needs to have an additional 25 to 30% for taxes (federal plus many states have state taxes)
If one spends $100, they actually had to make at least $125 to be able to spend that $100

Hey - another great video. I appreciate your point about traveling while you can. As we get older we all may become less mobile - and traveling while you can obviates possible regrets. I'm a slow traveler and I admire your travel accomplishments but traveling slow and laid back is my jam. To each his/her own. Safe travels all.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and costs! I'm sure you'll get to this in your vaccinations video--but before we went to Thailand, we decided which vaccines we needed to get beforehand and which we'd get there (if we'd have a couple low-risk weeks for whatever we were vaccinating against--Japanese encephalitis was that category for us). The travel clinic there was way, way, way cheaper and super-confidence-inspiring. Also, in the U.S., some vaccines need to be gotten at a pharmacy and are covered there (e.g., shingles), and others are only covered at a doctor's office even though a pharmacy will give it (e.g., Hep A, if memory serves); and vaccines needed only for travel (not in the recommended list in the U.S.) aren't covered at all. Confusing but key to figure out!
Thanks for following along and the vaccinations can be confusing. You bring up great points about getting different vaccines in different places. It can be confusing. There were a couple that we could have gotten overseas, but it was a live vaccine and we had concerns with Bev's MS, so we got the one in the US. We didn't realize they were sometimes different vaccines around the world. Oh well, thanks for sharing your experiences and safe travels,

Another great and practical video! Besides getting vaccinated, would be helpful to learn how do you stay so healthy and energetic on road? Travel is often hard on the health, especially a concern for older folks; with jet lag, strange foods, viruses, not used to the weather, and minor accidents, etc. but the two of you always seem amazingly in great health on the road! Must have some good tips.

Hello John and Bev, My wife and I have enjoyed many of your videos so we have vicariously lived through you. We have traveled for a month at a time and have enjoyed the slower aspect of that. I want to visit countries that are more what my wife calls 3rd world countries like Vietnam, Cambodia and India. But I wife doesn’t.
We have visited Thailand and Bali. To her the pure heat, humidity and dirty infrastructure is a bit much. I’m looking for recommendations. Countries like Malaysia are like year around heat. If you are in our neck of the woods we would love to have you. We live in Orange County, California.

I’d find it more appealing to go to fewer places and stay longer, like a month or two. That would be cheaper, wouldn’t it?
Traveling slower has many advantages, including being cheaper. No argument at all, it just isn't our objective right now. We are trying to see as much of the world as possible in our "go-go" years AND grow our Retirement Travelers business. Those two things make trying to make it as cheap as possible not our objective. We plan to do exactly what you are saying in 5-10 years. Hope you are enjoying our channel.

When I go on foreign vacations, I akways stay at least 4 weeks in one place. Apart from letting me get more of a sense of what the place is actually like, this also lets me take the advantage of Airbnb's monthly reduced rates, which can be as much as 50% off the regular daily price.
