      Sloppy Mechanics Thanks Matt! I like the way you're thinking. I was considering doing exactly that. Guess I'll throw that "Genuine Walbro" 450 labeled as "TI", that I bought months ago, in there and see if it works. Bought two of them at the time. One for this truck and one for the Camaro.

    I'm never going to do this job, but I am really enjoying watching your progress with it. Thanks for the update on The Squirter too. I don't want to be one of those guys trying to tell you what to do, but I wish I would've tarped or threw a car cover on my nicer 3rd gens that I had parked outside. That 80's and 90's stuff don't hold up in the sun. Weatherstrip, dashpads cracked, seat piping all zig-zagged with the tops of the black seats looking grey. 20 bucks will save you some things you wouldn't think cost a lot now, but for some reason those rear hatch tonneau covers are $200 anymore. Just looking out, and if you have it at one of those housing authority type communities they can't come on the property to see what is under there by law (I know this after paying the fines for ordinance violations with my projects). Hope my mistakes helped in some way- you might even be able to do a video about how to do an outdoors storage setup on the cheap and save some people from losing good projects over dumb rules or weather beat downs. I really wish I had neighbors like you. My friend made a joke about throwing a Ferrari logo on cheap car covers just to piss the bitchy types off. It's actually not a bad idea for us working class overly taxed folks. Pile of lumber? Ferrari cover. Spare 9 bolt Australian rears? Ferrari cover. A wrecked boat named "The HMS Itchy Kitty"? Ferrari cover. We'd all look like millionaires by covering up works in progress. Those foofy types only respect money and look down on ingenuity. My bad for writing a novel here, I just have huge respect for what you accomplish.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you brotha. I really appreciate it. You've got a good point though. I can see the sun already killing the paint on top of my C10 too. I've tried to think about how I'd get them out of the weather. I even have a Camaro car cover that I acquired and never used. I guess I figured that it wouldn't help, but you're right. It could help save the interior at least.

    Trying to do a long bed to short bed extended cab but with out cutting frame and just by relocating my leaf springs u think its possible

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  6 лет назад

      Oh sure! Anything is possible. First I’d start by thinking about how an extended cab short bed is the most common truck to find for sale where I live. So I’d likely just pick one up.
      But if that wasn’t an option, with enough studying, I’m sure it can be done.
      Off the top of my head, I can’t remember what differences or similarities there are between those two.
      Check their wheel base lengths. I bet they’re pretty close to the same. It might be a pretty easy conversion.

    hey u have the short bed use it to mount on frame check gaps between cab and bed make sure same top to bottom then adjust frame to fit bed before welding.. I have fixed a couple cars hit in front with tweeked unibodies. I pull then measure like u with tape to get close then use good hood to fine tune making sure equal gaps between fenders and front core support is high enough or hood line to fender line wont match.. point use bed as a framing square before welding up. hey i am in fort worth tx u close??

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад

      Thanks! Not a bad idea. I would have just needed to locate the bed mounts first, because they have changed. Good info to add for anyone else tackling this project. I've got it all done now and will actually be driving it to Grand Prairie in about two weeks for Reserve Duty.

  • @redlinepaul4546
    @redlinepaul4546 7 лет назад +1

    hey, make a side plate or fish plate with 7/16- 1/4. Weld the plate on the outside frame rail starting from the old hanger to the bed mount and place your hanger. At the same time it's also reinforcing the frame but the hanger will still out 7/16 - 1/4, it shouldn't hurt the alignment on the axle and you can weld a nut to the hanger to bolt back the leaf spring and have clearance when you raise the hanger.

    Trust your measurements, nothing from the factory is perfect! That is why they use the words "within spec"! Just think when they put the trucks together they don't spend a copious amounts of time on them and tend to trust the computer systems to make sure they are "close".

    I think your right on track. Even if your off a little bit up and down it won't make any difference. The important thing is to be straight on the diff or axle so the vehicle will not be dog tracking. Good video good job. very interesting to see a overhead make things happen.
    I shortened a 86 ford but it was very simple because the frame was a straight shot and didn't have to deal with spring hangers. I just boxed where it was cut,shortened the drive tube and brake line ,wires etc.
    You will always have negative comments from someone who has never tried anything on there own. Good luck and God bless you.

      Thanks brotha! Yes, you could do that. I was attempting to use as much as possible of what I thought would be common for other guys to use. Most won't want to cut those frame rivets out at a junk yard.
      Now that I'm done with it, I'm glad that I didn't get short bed hangers, because I just cut them up to make drop hangers out of them anyway.

    On the very back just a heads up the 15mm headed bolt on the bumper bracket goes throught the rear spring hanger on the short beds. The bolt goes in the upper rear most rivet hole. Hopefully that will help you figure out how much to cut off the very back.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад

      +Pat Schneider Thank you! I just now got a chance to read this but that helps. I set the bed down today before cutting the rear of the frame off and saw that it wouldn't sit flat unless I cut some frame off. So I cut just behind the original 15mm bolt hole on the frame, about 4.25" off, to get the bed to lay down. Figure I can cut more off later if needed. Thanks for the tip! Good looking out. That may give me an excuse to cut the rest of the recite out and raise that bracket too! Free drop! lol

  • @chrisbordelon8975
    @chrisbordelon8975 7 лет назад +1

    Just my opinion but, I would also take some sort of measurement to make sure the axle center line would be correct. Also, I'd either weld a gusset in the hangers or plate it if you're going to move it up and cut it flush with the frame and I'd definitely weld a plate on the back side of the frame to add some wall thickness to bolt the hangers on to. I also tend to over engineer things too.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад +1

      +Chris bordelon I feel exactly the same and was planning to do that but I got feedback from a guy who's done this one a few 3/4 ton trucks. He chose to not do either and has had no issues.

    • @chrisbordelon8975
      @chrisbordelon8975 7 лет назад

      Roger that. I've never done any kind of frame modification other then a c notch on a mini truck. I would over engineer the hell out of it. Great project and I'm definitely going to follow along on this build.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад +1

      I agree with your thoughts there Chris and I still consider it. I've gotten feedback from a gentleman who's done a couple of the short bed conversions on 2500 trucks and says that he hasn't had any issue not doing these things though. That's comforting to know. But If we go ahead and plate and gusset it, there'd be a definite no-worry situation.

    I've done several full size and mini trucks like this. Always flat plate the front and back of the weld. Stress cracks may form and it's no fun hitting a bump and hearing the frame pop in half. Take this from experience. L8R!

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад

      +Dave Stanley Makes since and exactly what I was planning to do until I saw how this frame joins together. It's a lot different than old school frames. Fish plates would hurt though.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад

      Yea, that'd suck! I guess plating over the welds, would give more insurance of everything holding up well. Though the factory didn't do it. Did the examples, that you're thinking of, slide into each other like this one? I always figured that I'd plate over my welds if I did a C10, because then I'd be doing a Z cut in the frame and butting them up together. I wasnt planning to plate this one since GM didn't plate it. I just planned to use their same method, slip it in and weld it up.
      I'm trying to get an update up tomorrow, but i've been driving the truck for the past two weeks now and all is good. I'm digging it. I'll likely pull the bed for the update so the video will show more. That'll give me a chance to inspect the welds. I've also hauled a small trailer load.

    • @davestanley8833
      @davestanley8833 7 лет назад +1

      AGearHead4Life I went back on the video and i think you'll be golden. Butt welds ,z'd cuts would definitely need plates. I'd think about some kind of plate if your planning on putting some real torque flex on the frame. Now try shortening a long box and frame together, it's just a bunch of measuring.

    not sure it would work but why not use the lower bracket support as the back side frame stiffner and cut an access hole through the frame for the leaf bolt. might even get a few more inch. of drop on the rear. older dodge trucks used to have their leaf mount this way.

    • @AGearHead4Life

    Awesome. I appreciate the info. Was researching the 8.8's & found that a 99-04 GT rear is only 1/4" narrower than a stock 3rd gen... still have to weld perches & a T/A mount tho. New axles anyway for the bolt pattern. Change the carrier from 28 to 31 & might have a stronger unit. IDK...? Didn't know if you had known that.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад

      Two things too look into. First, those axles can be redialed for a different bolt pattern. That way you won't have to buy new axles. Well, If you plan to change to 31 spline I guess you'll have to anyway. Just more options to consider. You could run the 28 splines for now, until youre ready to invest in axles that usually cost about $400.
      Second, isn't that pumpkin offset on that rear? Usually you'll have to center the pumpkin so that the driveshaft clears the body.

    • @Daniel-id5kd
      @Daniel-id5kd 7 лет назад +1

      AGearHead4Life On the Mustang 99-04 its centered but 28spline. Decided to go with the Explorer rear for the larger/beefier housing tubes & got a deal on one with a 3.73 traclock diff. No axles tho. I didn't figure $150 was bad.... I think I'm going to extend the 3.25" housing on the short side & weld the bearing cup back on the end. Idk if I'll have to shorten the long side any yet. Haven't had a chance to measure much. Been tied up. Any suggestions?

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад

      Cool! Yea, $150 is about right. That's about what I was picking them up for before I moved. No idea what the price will be here.
      Yep, I'm building 3 8.8 rears and one of them is the way you're describing. That one will take more time since you have to cut the mounts off of the 4th gen rear and them weld them onto the 8.8 tubes, but it will also cost less and be nice and strong.
      I wound up using two long side axles. That build was manly to see how cheap I could build a good strong rear end. I can remember now how closer it came to a 4th gen rear, but I think that it was closer to the width of a 3rd gen. I likely have it written down somewhere.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад

      Just looked it up in the photo album of the project on my FB blog page. When extending the short side to match the long side, it comes to 62" from wheel mounting surface to WMS.
      I'll get a link to the album for you.

    • @Daniel-id5kd
      @Daniel-id5kd 7 лет назад +1

      Nice. Yeah I had planned on using my mounts & perches to weld on. Debating on making a bracket to weld to the pumpkin for the torque arm or make a tubular rear mounted like a CHE mount. Then fabbing some C6 brakes all around. I'll post a vid of what I decide to do on the mount either way. Gonna be a nasty 91 when all said & done.

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life  7 лет назад

      Possibly. The reason I chose not to do that was because I knew that most of the bed mount bolt holes didn't line up and would have to be moved. I also wasnt 100% sure that the first two would line up correctly (It turns out that they did though). The first two are on the cab side of the frame. I think that it would have made it less fun to tack weld, being on my back and having the frame covered by the bed.
      Not saying that your suggestion is bad, just sharing my thought process as I did it. You're the second person to suggest this and the first guys said he's a body shop guy. So it must be a good idea.

      Thank you Rob! So far, you are right man. I'm trying to get an update up tomorrow, but i've been driving the truck for the past two weeks now and all is good. I'm digging it.

    Good job, FYI power nation used extended cab front spring hangers that were the same as the factory short bed hangers. Looks good though.

      +Wr3nch78 Thanks brotha! I modified the heck out of my hangers to not only make them work but also to lower the truck some too. ;)

I'll likely have a time that I'll need your help. Yea, I need to collaborate with ol Matt. I wanted to take the Camaro to him and have him tune it for a Collab session, but not that i've moved to TX Im even further away from him. We'll see.
