- Yes it's called a Firearms Certficate, but most people who don't already have one don't know that! In this video I talk through how you can obtain your Section 1 Firearm Certificate (FAC) and get into the amazing sport of shooting!

Great video! Every licence holder should encourage participation in the sport. If each licence holder introduced just 5 other people to the sport, and they in turn applied for licences, it would ensure that our hobby continues in the UK for many years to come.

@@Edgunsuk I’m sure they would employ more staff and maybe put the price of certificates up (which are dirt cheap). It may also help nudge the powers at be into 10 year certificates. Not introducing people to the sport is in my opinion a fatal mistake for the longevity of this hobby. The more licenced people that partake in the hobby, the more money it puts into the economy as well as becoming more costly and less politically appealing to ban.
I’m across the pond in the states but I try to encourage my friends in the UK to get into the hobby / sport - but most of them go “ahhhh it’s a pain!!!”
When to me it seems pretty straight forward and it requires some time / money like anything else nowadays

Agreed! Many clubs dont advertise themselves much for fear of drawing attention but how else can we get people in to the sport and grow it? Sort of a dumb strategy if you ask me! That's one of the main reasons I started this channel!
I agree, l was born in the UK and owned guns there until l moved to the USA. I could never talk at work with people about my sport as guns are scary! I am glad that people in the UK do own guns as limited as it is. Most of my guns today would be illegal if l were still living there. Sad really how bad the UK has got with gun control.
Tell me about it! I have found a club but I can't find a way there.
Get yourselves VPN (virtual private network) access. Proton works. Free too. I recently wanted to buy an air rifle. My Internet provider blocked me. FFS. Once I switched on VPN the shooting world opened up. Lots of other things open up too! Fuck1ng g0vernment.

Home office approved clubs are permitted to allow non members to shoot sect 1 firearms (rifles and muzzle loading pistols only) on 'guest days'. They are allowed to have 12 of these days per year, and these days will be pre-notified to the police. These are a good way to encourage new people to the sport. Who may be invited to shoot is a club decision.
If you join a club you must serve a minimum of 3 months probationary period and attend 'regularly' (how regular is a club decision).
If accepted as a club member (full or probationary) you may shoot (be in possession, whilst at the club activity) sect 1 rifles and muzzle loading pistols. These may be club guns or loaned from other members.
yeah, they introduced this law also to airsoft, using typical firearms licence rules ^.^ good to see someone, educated. loads in england, think we cant have guns etc xD
What calibre are these?
@@vvsbee5694 There aren't any particular calibre restrictions. A section 1 firearm might be .17 up to an artillery piece. There are some extra complications around chamberings above 10000joules muzzle energy.
Just starting out on this now, doing my training at the club first and then I’ll do my application.

I'm just in middle of trying to re join local club where I was a member for about 4.years.
I'm 61..ex mil. Ex genuine UKSF. Been shooting full bore since I was in cadets in 1979.
Lee Enfield .303 was bigger than me!
I was a range conducting officer qualified for stage 1 to 3. military and also weapon training instructor. Including foreign weapons. I also ran and managed the unit armoury for several years. After finishing my service I went on to become an armed Close Protection Diplomatic Protection Officer on UK Gov contract in Iraq. A few years ago. I taught the blokes Glock 9mm and all other weapon systems we had.
Been a member of several clubs but never held or applied for a fire arms or shotgun license. For the UK.
It's going to be interesting to see what happens when I apply for both shot gun and fire arms plus fac air gun ticket.

i will tell you what will happen m8, not a chance they will give you one, most ex mil guys are pretty much a no no on getting a Class one in civi street

We had to get RFD to use fully automatic vehicle mounted weapons ( to fire blanks ) for display purposes . Twenty years ago we had a road registered chieftain MBT
So many rules, I live in the US and I just fill out a form they run a background check and I can buy whatever I can afford
the important distinction is that in the US its a right to own a firearm. in the UK its a PRIVILIGE. The way the UK views it; its on you to justify why they should trust you, rather than that trust being automatically given

@@Nick186 No, it started before that with Micheal Ryan and the Hungerford massacre in 1986, the firearms act came in just after in 1988. He used a range of automatic weapons and killed 16 people.

Each case is treated on its own merit, but the person living in the same house must not ever have access to your guns. I'd consider you an unacceptable risk to public safety, and so would the police.

You apply for the license … not the firearms to start with. Without information your question was impossible to answer. But that a person that had trouble with police lived under your roof can potentially still cause you problems.
Good luck if you live in Dorset. The licensing is a joke, I applied for a SGC 30 months ago and I'm still waiting, only to be told they still have a backlog after all this time.

I got lucky with Essex Police, took 3 weeks from sending my application to getting my Mossberg. Thought In was gonna be waiting minimum of a year.

Here in UK we use the word 'firearm' - it's a less 'harmful' word than 'weapon' which has connotations of being used to harm other humans. You'll note that the permitting document/authority matches that thought by calling itself a 'Firearms Certificate' and not a 'weapons certificate'. The lunacy of this shows in the title used to describe air-guns - pistols and rifles - collectively as 'air-weapons'....🙄

@@xYOUNGDORx Nope. The UK has no written Constitution to amend. In the entire world, only the USA has the Right to Bear Arms protected by the CoUSA.

If you’re not a criminal, have a reason for use and a suitable place to use them then you really can’t be refused.
Very informative video, I just wanted to check regarding an air rifle above 12ft lbs requires a FAC, is this easier to get a certificate for? Cheers Brian
@brianwheeler9069 admittedly, air rifles are not my area of expertise but the process of applying for an FAC is the same regardless of what firearm you are looking to possess
There's no difference. As far as the law is concerned an air rifle over 12ftlb is the same as a Barrett .50 calibre rifle in terms of obtaining a FAC. It's easier to get a shotgun certificate than a FAC for a 15ftlb air rifle!
You can share LBP and LBR if it is on both users license.
really good video thank you. I have completed probation and joined a club. Have access to land and am about to do my first competition shoot. Do you have to specify WMR separately to 0.22 LR or can you just request .22 rim fire
You won't get WMR unless your club has competitions for it, and a club/target FAC does not allow you to shoot live prey, only targets at a club.
Otoh my pest control/hunting FAC does not cover me to target shoot at a club, they are different "conditions" under which the FAC is granted.
Couple questions, hoping folks here might be able to help me out.
First off - I'm quite keen on getting into target shooting, ideally longer range. Where is the best place to look to find clubs and what they offer? I don't really have the capacity to go to a few dozen guest days all over the place just to see if any 1 club is what I'm looking for.
Second, do clubs have the ability to store firearms on behalf of the owner? Seeing as it'll only ever be used at said club that seems a logical thing to do, but more to the point, I'm renting and don't own a property, so I doubt I'd be able to get a gun safe installed should I wish to purchase a firearm if/when I get into the sport (And I'm not sure if it's even a legal possibility. I suspect there's probably some kind of law or clause to a law to say you must own the property that the safe is installed at)
@daredemontriple6 so I want to keep my answer succinct but to answer as much of your questions as possible. In terms of finding a club its a case of searching online, Google, Social Media and you can also try the NRA to look for affialiated clubs (most clubs are, especially those that do long range as its a stipulation of the MOD that clubs using MOD ranges be NRA affiliated).
Some clubs do store members firearms but not all because they need special licensing or be registered as an RFD. (clubs can have hundreds of members so its often just not possible to store everyones firearms) some RFDs (gun shops) offer gun storage but obviously at a fairly significant cost.
There is no law saying you can not store your firearms at home even if your property is rented although there may need to be considerations in cases where it is a home of multiple occupancy or you house share as the Police want to ensure no one else has access to the safe. If its just you and/or your immediate family then there would be no issue. You can ofcourse consult your landlord but do you really need to? Any holes in the wall can be patched and repainted quite easily if and when you move so it will be as it was before.
Storing your firearms at home is more cost effective and convenient for you in the long run trust me. But you can discuss your needs with any club you get in touch with. Hope this helps 👍

Good to know there are no laws about that sort of thing - strikes me as the sort of stupid and unnecessary addendum that seems to crop up so often in UK law.
I totally agree that storing it at home is better. For a start I'd prefer not to entrust such expensive property to someone else. But also of course maintenance is a large factor in the longevity of a firearm and I'd rather not spend an hour at the range every time I visit field stripping and oiling and such. I was under the impression the safe needs to be pretty securely attached to the building though - hence the question. I'm not sure what the actual requirements are, but I'd imagine a 10" long 1/4" bolt or 6 are not quite the same sort of patch up job as with a little shelf or something!
@daredemontriple6 there aren't specific requirements on how the safe should be attached but you are right that it should be very secure. I.e not easily removed even with tools. It should be solid enough that you can grab hold of it and yank with quite a lot of force and have zero movement. But any hole even large ones can be repaired and repainted if and when you move.
Makes you wonder if it's worth the hassle, I & my brother used to do target shooting & got picked by the club to shoot at competition level but there were 2 of there friends there who just pissed about so it was very off putting so we left 😢
That's the thing, it would take just one person being stupid, to eff everything up.
I tried archery and there was no way I'd want to be in the same group as certain people. They need to be constantly told, constantly supervised and just have no sense

Why would we do that just to shoot semi or full auto, if we could we would be more broke than we are now with the costs of primers and powder 😂.
We can have any caliber, any mods (coming off ticket soon), I know people with anti aircraft albeit not many ranges allow it, we have ranges from 25yd to 2mile, that's plenty for the type of shooting here which is leaning heavily towards precision rifle. Then there is shotguns, pretty much no restriction on the number of or cartridges.

Join a club first. But there are only straight-pull 9mmP firearms on Mainland UK and only in Northern Ireland to be able to own a centrefire calibre handgun.
Ur inspiring me but I have a criminal record so dos that mean I have no chance or jst take a chance ? Would love to be to join or be member but have that question over my head 🤔 hence the question but really would love to be a member and have a club that I could represent I live in south west London any recommendation of a club near me ? @Edgunsuk there are a few firearms in the intro. One is a .22lr semi auto AR15, one is a .223 straight pull AR15 and one is a semi auto 12 gauge shotgun (mag fed). I have videos on my channel about all 3 😁👍

I'm about to start getting into shooting but sadly I don't think I will be able to own my own firearms. I live with my parents and the only place I could put and properly secure a safe would be in my garage but apparently the police don't like that and prefer them to be indoors. It's a bummer but I understand why obviously. Might look into seeing if there are any clubs near me that allow people to store guns at the range (doubt it but worth a go)

I do not see the problem … simply wait … you usually can use the firearms the club provides … you do not need to own own firearms straight away if it is just about a passion for shooting … you will not always live with your parents … at some point you will live your own life … it might be useful to wait owning your own guns till you got an own life … never share what you shared in your comment as it creates the impression that it is all about owning firearms! Its no cheap hobby and if you do not have the funds to have an own place …funding 2 safe’s (ammunition & firearms) and an firearm & ammunition might not be a good idea. A question that might come up when applying for a license. Especially thinking about step 2 without having started shooting yet! Too many red flags in your comment/question.
@@GanymedeXD Didn't mean for it to come across like that at all in my comment, apologies for any confusion. I have been doing clay target shooting for a good while now. With my comment I was referring to potentially branching out and taking the next steps to get into shooting other firearms.
I've since decided to hold off on applying for my shotgun license until I have moved out of my parents house. I could afford to have my own place now but I am very money focused and want to save a sizeable deposit for that first hence why I haven't taken that step yet.
Apologies if I came across as someone who was just chasing the idea of owning a firearm as that is not the case at all. I'm fully aware of the responsibility that comes with it. There definitely are people out there who just want to own firearms for the sake of it, however I enjoy the sport and am simply wanting to think in advance of what requirements I need to meet for when that time comes. In my opinion, asking these questions is the responsible thing to do. Going to people more knowledgeable than myself on the topic so I have a good understanding seems logical to me.

Good video! Are you able to apply if you are renting a property? Just as I guess the landlord would have access to the property potentially? Or even you might have trouble sticking a safe in?
Renting isn't a problem as Landlords should never enter a property without your consent (except in emergencies) but you will still need to secure it to the structure of the building and ensure it meets the required standards
Why should that be a problem? No landlord is allowed to enter your flat without consent. And why should a safe be a problem? Its not!
@@GanymedeXD The only issue a safe may have is that they need to be secured to the structure of the building. Landlords often don't like you putting picture hooks up let alone bolting an entire gun safe to a wall.

Which gun are you shooting at 0:29 ? Mechanism is semi-auto, but recoil looks more than a .22

Hi, thanks for the video and all the information, this is something I'm looking at doing in the coming months and wondered, what it you wanted more than one rifle, can you hold multiple of the same calibre like .22?
@KingsleyPhoto you CAN but bear in mind you will need to provide justification for each one, and just "wanting" them wont be enough. For example if you take part in Gallery rifle and also practical mini rifle, its understandable you may want two different rifles (with different set ups) but that are both .22 and that would be your justification. So long as you can justify why you need two rifles of the same calibre then you should be ok but ultimately it depends on your FEO.

@@UKGuns Are you allowed to do recreational shooting on your own private land? Such as if you made a safe shooting range on your farmland? Would you have to register it as a shooting range? Is there basically any way to be able to do clay shooting, target shooting etc on your own private land? Cant seem to find much info on this, thanks.
@Junaid_12321 yes you can but you would need suitable insurance and the Police would want to inspect the land to ensure it is suitable for the type of shooting you want to use it for. If they are satisified then you could be granted a licence for shooting on that land and could apply for the types of shotguns/firearms they have approved the land for.

Thanks for that, Just about to apply for a certificate as I am now a full member at my club and have a safe for the ammo fixed to a wall but my gun cabinet is in the loft will that be ok do you think?
So long as it is fixed in a way that makes it near impossible to remove without significant effort. Some people will say it has be attached to "brick and mortar" no where does it say that and actually mine aren't and the Police were happy because they are installed in such a way that removal would be extremely difficult. Basically overdo it with securing it and you should be fine but it will be down to your FEO to decide. Maybe ask for their advice before hand they are usually quite willing to give guidance. Mine was.

Mate has a safe in his loft, as long as the cops can get up there safely to check it’s fine.

That is correct, the wording in the bill of rights states protestants can have arms. The government basically changed who is classified as one. So basically police army and government can have what they want.
Go question it in parliament it was the Dunblane massacre that made us change the ways for guns

Biggest bottler neck in getting your FAC in the UK is the medical report. I started in Feb of last year. Took until the end of August! Our FA officer just had to go to check the moving of a safe to a mates house because the guys medical report wasn't ready by the time his FAC needed renewing!
Having a medical report is mandatory, a doctor writing it isn't.🙄
What does it mean a doctor writing it isn’t? Who else but a doctor should be able to write your report? And why bottleneck? You tell the dic when required and they issue it! And do nit misbehave requesting it! A colleague only had to pick his good to go medical report up … but got into a heated argument about wearing a covid mask when picking it up. The GP added addendum … impulse control problems and anger issues … bye bye firearms license … for at least a year!
Does the physical check on storage go further than the safe into general security such as alarms, locks and lighting? I. E does the general security of the house have a bearing on the decision?
@biddyboy1570 yes it does but generally speaking they expect no more than "normal" i.e all windows and doors lock securely and are double glazed. Only where there is a large number of firearms to be held or you live in a high crime area will they expect additional measures such as alarms and cameras

Installing an alarm and some CCTV is a good idea. They also like it if you mount your cabinet inside a cupboard so it's out of general site.
@E6EES you definitely don't NEED tp do those things though. Sure they will appreciate it but for many people it may not be practical or possible and for most it will be fine not to have those things in place so long as they meet minimum security requirements set out in the guidance
Nice video. Regarding ammunition, not clear how does it work, so I have to apply every time I need to buy a box of rounds? Or I apply once for say 500 rounds is that max amount that I can buy every time or once a week/month?
Yes, you apply once and that is the maximum you can HOLD. Meaning it is also the maximum you can buy PROVIDING you have none at home already. Or if you say have 200 at home you should only buy 300.
You bring your certificate in and the shop usually stamps it and writes down what you purchased.
Simple as that.

If you have had treatment for depression in the past but are ok now, will this be used against you to stop you getting a certificate?
Impossible to say without providing any information. Who diagnosed it, have you been under specialist services, did you require admission, detention, have you been suicidal, was alcohol involved, illegal drugs, what was the exact diagnosis (mild, moderate, severe, with/without psychosis etc), how long ago, are you fully recovered, any ongoing problems, any acute crisis history, did you fully comply with treatment. Was it a clinical depression or was it reactive to stress/life events or grief? Often this is misdiagnosed as depression … often it is just a Depressive Adjustment Disorder means no acute mental illness … depressed mood only being reactive to life circumstances. GP’s too quickly prescribing anti-depressants and diagnosing depression. A large number of GP depression diagnoses turn out not being clinical depressions or acute mental illnesses at all. Them labelling a natural adjustment reaction as mental illness. Even some Psychiatrists do not bother assessing it properly. For the license you need a letter from your GP. In summary … depending on the above details it could cause problems getting one.

I was granted my sgc back in august, and im now looking to apply for a sec1. Do you know if i will need a new GP form?
That's a good question! I'll be honest I'm not 100% sure. BUT I know medical proformas are normally valid for 6 months (this is refering to the time from when the proforma is issued to you until the time you apply for your licence) and if you were applying for a coterminous certificate you would only need one proforma but I am unsure about your case as its essentially a whole new application. Your FEO will be able to answer this question definitively but I suspect you will need a new medical pro forma! Let me know what they say as I am curious!
@@UKGuns yup, effectively I need a new GP pro forma to verify nothing has changed between Jan 23 and now (this was when I applied). They've also suggested I pay an extra £2 (£90 instead of £88)to effectively renew my SGC and forearms on a co terminus.

Filling out a form and having to chat with a police officer is not a headache to own a plethora of potentially lethal firearms.

A form and a cop came over after a polite phone call, we talked about cars for an hour then he quickly checked that I had a secure cabinet for storage.

I have a conviction for robbery when I was 14. I’m 39 now and to be honest I didn’t even rob the guy I was just there and we all ended up getting nicked. Thinking of it now if I said no comment at the police station I would have walked out because I didn’t participate in the robbery. Anyways Didn’t do any prison time for it. Great video ! I'm 21 years old and looking to get a 22lr bolt action for rabbit shooting. Do I need a separate ammunition safe for rimfire rounds? How would you go about justifying that you are hunting? (On someone else's land)
Ammo does need to be stored separately. That can be within the gun safe but needs to be within a seperate lock box inside. A lot of gun safes have these built in.
To be able to shoot on someone else’s land. You need to have permission from the land owner and this will be checked as part of your application. As your a first time licence holder. This would be a specific condition on your certificate and any new locations would also need to be notified to the police for them to check.

@@GanymedeXDThere can be issues depending on the local Police. Cumbria are notorious for being obstructive/slow in issuing FACs, Dorset might be similar.
Under our 1688 bill of right we have a right to bear arms for defence. Its one of those rights that don't come from government which are based on our natural liberties. In law a liberty can't be turned into a license which is I suspect something to do with the governments confusion over whether they are issuing licenses or certificates.
Not any longer we don't. Subsequent law changes since 1689 have subsumed the BoR into an unrecognisable mish-mash of utter rubbish. In any case, it only mentioned that CHRISTIANS should be able to arm themselves to prevent the unwanted incursion of 'popery'.

Most clubs do allow younger shooters with adult supervision but you will need to check with your local club. As for licensing the minimum age is 18 but there are some exceptions so you can check with your FEO for your circumstances

To be honest, I am not 100% sure on that but I don't think it would be possible for a number of reasons, but cant hurt to contact your local FEO and ask!

Do you have a criminal record? If not I think it would be disgusting to refuse you because of aspersers. I am sure people with aspersers are far more likely to be a victim of crime than a criminal. There are also shooting days available at some clubs or ranges for the general public. It's a good way of getting as taste and you will be shooting day one as you pay for it.

I had a license approved after bouts of serious depression and treatments for that and anxiety, but you will need several years of stable mental health before I'd recommend applying. I wrote a detailed personal statement about why shooting was positive on my mental health and that went a long way.

Without providing any info nobody will be able to give any recommendations. Who diagnosed it? GP or specialist services? Are you under mental health services? Ever been admitted, detained, suicidal? Whats the accurate diagnosis … anxiety is rather a symptom than a diagnosis … if anxiety is so strong that it is an own diagnosis its different (mixed anxiety/depressive disorder, recurrent depressive disorder, mild, moderate, severe, with without psychosis). Previous episodes, time scale, have you fully recovered, in treatment? Medication? Complications eg sleep deprivation? Crisis situations? Substance use? Is it a clinical depression or reactive to life events/stress/grief? Most GP’s misdiagnose reactively depressed mood as depression, but they are usually a Depressive Adjustment Disorder … no acute mental illness … as its a natural adjustment process … GP’s and some Psychiatrists making it worse by prescribing anti-depressants and label the patient even though this inhibits and delays adjustment processes. If its reactive in nature that would help. Otherwise you must be properly treated, compliant and must have fully recovered with a period of stability. Not sure how long this is for firearms. But longer than for DVLA. What many people miss … when you have been diagnosed with severe anxiety/depression (any severe mental health condition) … you must inform the DVLA as you are banned from driving. There you are allowed to drive again after a 3 month period of stability which your doctor must confirm. Its often missed as its the drivers responsibility to inform the DVLA eg if the GP diagnoses a Severe Depressive Episode. If you do not inform them and drive you are driving without insurance! For firearms licenses this of course is seen mich stricter. I would try and apply after a year of stability. If anxiety is still severe as your baseline, forget it. And whats the issue with criminal record?

There is a part of the UK, (Northern Ireland) where you can apply for a personal protection weapon which you can conceal carry.

....and all it takes to lose it is a lie from an ex. I know of three guys that happened to. 1 was a gamekeeper and 1 a professional deer manager. The last 2 were in a divorce and had bitter exes. The only issue serving armed forces can sometimes have is a place to store the firearm/shotgun because they can really only do that if they have their own home off camp. But if they meet the criteria they can and DO obtain licences. I do explain in the video that the Police is who you apply to, so I dont even know why you put thay comment about the Police deciding? 100% false. There is no truth to that whatsoever. As a shooter of many years, I can assure you I have seen many people from many backgrounds and ethnicities within the sport including my own club. If anyone is denied a firearms certificate it will be purely because of their suitabillity due to either criminal or medical reasons (or possibly not meeting the requirements of suitability) and nothing to do with their race.

The stated case for the regulation of weapons within the UK is the risk to the public and the harm that can be caused by their misuse.
The harm caused by any (actual) firearm is far more significant than by pepper spray.
The reason why pepper spray is illegal is solely due to its use as an item of self defence, a concept which is effectively illegal in the UK, which is itself insane and illogical, after all the idea that a person may need a less lethal item to protect themselves is perfectly normal across much of Europe (most of which is safer than the UK).

The fact is this the UK isn't a safe nation, yes safer than the USA (though some crimes are higher here, thankfully murder is lower) but that is a meaningless metric given our European neighbours, and violent crime is high and murder is surprisingly high, with even France (which is more dangerous generally) having a slightly lower murder rate per capita than the UK.

not really practical advice is it, USA is surprisingly tough to get into for EU citizens. same as Canada.. here's hoping for a free travel agreement between CANZUK one day, but I doubt it will ever happen :(

Where there's the most amount of guns per people. The least amount of violent crime . Chicago , London, Toronto are all places with no guns and look at the crime . Switzerland has the most guns in Europe, and they have the least amount of crime. But hey politics aside . I'm mainly shocked that the government treats you guys like children . You know there are plenty of countries outside of America, including several in Europe who have higher ownership of firearms than the UK and have very few issues. Firearms ownership can be achieved safely. There are over 500,000 certificate holders (shotgun and firearms) in the UK and yet incidents involving legally owned firearms are exceptionally rare. America is an extreme example. no one in the UK is calling for the US level of ownership or lack of licensing

Almost everywhere in Europe is more permissive than the UK and almost everywhere in Europe is safer than the UK. I doubt anyone would look at the Swiss and think "we don't want to end up like that" yet the Swiss can own new manufactured machine guns as individuals (this is not possible even in the USA), all active militia keep their military rifles at home (and can buy them after they're no longer active) and yet they're far safer than Brits.
