  • The reason I bought the Morgo pump is because I wanted a brand new pump, and not because the standard late model Ariel pump is lacking in any way. From the middle of 1949, Ariel introduced a pump with slightly larger feed and return plungers, and this can be fitted to all singles. This later pump was stamped 49A on the face, but keep an eye out for smoking which denotes overoiling on some engines. The triumph pre unit pumps can also be adapted by elongating the lower holes and cutting down the body and plungers, but it really isn't of any benefit to have so much oil in the engine.
En Espanol. Bomba Numero Uno es TRIUMPH. Bomba Numero Dos es, MORGO, y Numero Tres es ARIEL de 1949 and luego. Embolo de suministro es, TRIUMPH 9.5mm. MORGO 8mm ARIEL 6.3mm

I think Paul Henshaw put out something about these pumps a few years ago. A very good design, IMHO.

I think the early bike he was working on might have had 3 plain rings and no oil scraper, and not coping with the extra oil being flung everywhere before draining back to the sump for scavenging. Some owners have reported the overoiling where others have no problems. A very well made pump though, and a worthy replacement for the later model Ariel pumps.

Brilliat content! I have 1954 Red Hunter and it starterd smoking heavily. What could be reason for that? Piston and rings are ok. Could it be oil pump gasket or something else? Greetings from Finland.

Hello. It's possible you have a dirty oil pump return that might be slowing down the scavenge back to the tank. Any excess oil in the engine will continue to fly around and can get past the rings. Clean out the pump and the gauze strainer in the sump plate to make sure they are clean, and also make sure the oil pipe in the sump plate is free from sludge as this can reduce its diameter over time and also reduce the return rate. It is also possible for oil to enter the inlet valve guide and into the cylinder if your guides are badly worn. Start with the easiest thing first 👍
